The

Element

Ancient philosophers advocated four universal constitutional elements, earth, water, air and fire.

However, research on the existence of a further fifth element, still continues.

Despite the fact that a concensus around what the fifth element might be has yet to be reached, it provides an explorative space for us.

The fifth element might perhaps be the sugar in a cup of coffee, the new life in a family, the ineffaceable memory in the mind, the catastrophic battle or the tracing of time. It would have its own character and shape in different time and space. Have these elements ever been overlooked, neglected, disregarded or abandoned? From the unknown or the unseen, something new fangled or inventive may be learnt through exploration and investigation.

In this graduate exhibition by the fifth cohort of graduates from the B.A. Fine Art program, artists will

show their distinctiveness and uniqueness through multifarious media such as painting, sculpture, ceramic, photography or installation art and reveal the fifth element from an artistic perspective.

什 麼是第 五元素 ？至今 掘 的元素

‧水 (water)

(air) ，火 (fire) 四種基本 元素所構成外

，似乎仍 沒有任 何一種?法能被一致 的認同 ， 只可以 ?它是一種未 被認知

，第五 元素或 許是一 杯咖啡

、尚待發

。

裡的糖 ；一個 家庭裡 新生命 的誕生 ：一 段深刻 的記憶 ；一 場摧毀

性 的戰役 ；一些能 見證歲 月的痕跡等等 。它可 以是人

，可 以是物 ，可 以是事 ，也 可以是 意境；可以是過去 ，

可以 是現在 ，亦可以 是將來 ：它 以不同 的形態 ，存在 於不同 的空間 ，扮演 著不同 的角色 ，有 著不同 的意義

這些元 素有否 被忽視 、忽略 、遺忘 、甚 至遺棄 ？又或 需要擁 有鑽研 、探討 、探索 的精神

領域 ，一 些未知 的範疇

，發 掘出新 的元素

，而這種 狀態亦 同時賦 予了一 個思索 的空間

Earth, Water, Air and Fire take us into the realm of interconnections, of ever-returning processes in a cyclic universe where each condition becomes part of the other. There our cultural lives reverberate with nature and the communal belonging it brings. Then there is the

'beyond', that fifth element of the unknown and unseen. The fifth element awaits exploration; it offers a sense of opening and the possibility of transformation. In ancient Chinese philosophy all elements interact and associate with each other in continual and dynamic change.

And it is these very same responses that are available through art

—

be it image, object, text, film, video, sound or movement, digitised or otherwise. As we enter the space of 'art', as viewers we are taken to

the edge of the known and lured into the unknown, into the fifth

element where new reverberations light up the edges of our experience and open us to new possibilities. These are the elements of surprise and mystery that can flow to our senses, perceptions and

critical faculties when art immerses us in its realm.

In his book The Poetics of Space, French philosopher Gaston Bachelard

speaks of poetry in terms of repeating 'acts of emergence' where 'life becomes manifest'. Art, like poetry, has that capacity to take us to the unforeseeable and place us in a new topology where we may be caught unawares; we may shiver, turn away or look more deeply into what is not apparent to the eye. There on the brink of new knowledge we may experience that act of emergence, which is itself poetic.

The fifth cohort of graduates from the B.A. Fine Art degree in Hong Kong open these new 'acts of emergence' through their creative explorations. The exhibition is a celebration of their commitment to creative practice and they are to be congratulated. Their work has not

happened without serious dedication to an idea, critical reflection on process, innovation in the use of materials, turning to the new while embracing the old, and always that awareness of place and steady engagement with time.

For three years this group has worked together shaping their ideas in a programme jointly delivered by The Art School, Hong Kong Arts

Centre and the School of Art, RMIT University, Australia. A synergy of

effort and effect has brought artists, educators, administrators, curators, and viewers together in quality encounters. New dimensions

of the fifth element are opened to national and international

audiences; and there too the creative strengths of Hong Kong artists continue to flourish and spread their influences beyond these shores.

Congratulations; and may you all continue to search for the unknown, to open the fifth element to others through your creative efforts and your will to succeed.

In collaboration with RMIT University of Australia, The Art School has created a unique Fine Art programme. Now in its seventh year, our B.A. Fine Art Programme has nurtured 210 aspiring artists who

were provided with an inspiring environment to develop their creativity, imagination and aesthetic awareness.

It gives me great pleasure to see yet another group of new graduates who have successfully completed the course and have had great achievements in their aesthetic pursuit. In this year's Graduation Show, you will be able to see an array of the graduates' artworks

showing their innovative and experimental experiences of "The Fifth Element". Whether in the form of painting, ceramics, sculpture, photography, video, installation or mixed media, they reflect the real substance of each graduate's life.

I can well understand how the graduates have had to face many unforeseen difficulties, yet have resolved to transform their aesthetic ideas into artworks. May I take this opportunity to

congratulate the graduates who have successfully made their dreams a reality!

"Why are you here?" asked one art student after my welcome lecture.

Having just arrived and not feeling entirely sure I was here, let alone

why, I cautiously asked what she might mean.

"I mean," she said, gently enunciating each word: "Why are you

here?"

Existential panic; post-colonial guilt; bad idea to start on the wine before a Q. and A. session. Well, I'm here... Academic rhetoric and promotional patter suddenly deserted me. We're all here...

Of course, the answer was engagingly staring me in the face: we're here for you.

And now as graduates you are here for us - for your work is a more eloquent representation of both The Art School and RMIT's School of Art than any words of mine.

So let me just add to the celebrations of your graduation show my

congratulations on The Art School's fifth anniversary, and join with all our lecturers and administrators, researchers, technicians, managers, accountants, theorists and practitioners in wishing all of you every success as the artists of tomorrow.

。

I am thinking of those health workers (especially our local health workers), who in recent years have faced stress fighting flu pandemics.

I have applied some fur and feathers as a medium to transform them into a landscape painting (symbolic), to praise their past and future efforts.

The transformation of these sensitive elements into painting resulted in pleasure rather than hard feeling. This is a challenge, to transform the most sensitive things into peace and harmony, yet, this is what I think.

Unlike photographs or video screens, painting touches not only our vision, but also our sense of material and physical presence that make it closer to us. Based on this concept, Teapot was 'painted' and attempted to make the idea go further. The most important thing was that it made us think about

the relationship between paint and space: painting can exist in three dimensions.

Blood and flesh create a boundary. This is portrayed by a moth, unable to escape from this boundary, in the video. Sometimes the existence of this boundary becomes the abattoir of our mind, like a prisoner in a jail.

It is tough enough to trap our mind when our flesh is weak. It becomes the tomb of our soul. The moth is like ouÿ soul, which shows how desperate we are to leave this boundary, the body.

「空間系列」 是從一 個私人 書房空 間的主 要形態 經過解 構和重 組出來

，

這作 品的理念是源 於我們 怎樣認 知我們 的環境 ，包 括實物 和負面 的空間

。

構圖的 設計選 取了部 份書房 傢具的 抽象形 狀而成 ，再從這 立體的 空間轉

化為一 個平面 的圖畫

，而系列 作品就 是從不 同的角度看書 房從而 產生出

來 。

The composition of "Space series" is taken from the shapes of the essential forms of a domestic studio and through its deconstruction

and re-composition. The concept of this work is originated from how we perceive our surrounding, including the solid objects and the negative space. The design of these series is developed from the abstract form of part of the furniture and transformed from three

dimensions to two dimensions. The space series addresses the different perspectives of the studio.

Inspiration from Chinese literati paintings and my high esteem for the great masters encourages me to give the traditional painting style a new contemporary transformation, with the camera and computer substituting for ink and brush. In this series, photography and computer imaging techniques are applied to depict the imaginary poetic scenery, the self-expression of nostalgia

and loneliness.
