EDITOR’S

In today’s sometimes supersonic-paced world, a decade does not seem a particularly long period in the overall time continuum. But then, so much can change in almost the blinking of a quantum. Think internet, more recently COVID, and latterly the breakneck emergence of artificial intelligence.

Why such reflection? Because this is my last issue as editor of Home & Lifestyle Magazine, and I have been kindly permitted some journalistic indulgence. After more than a decade on this enriching and inspiring home décor, design and lifestyle journey with Sally and the team, it is time to retire.

The golf course and the green baize of the local snooker club beckon. Home-brew beer, kombucha and matcha tea starter kits can finally be opened and dabbled with. The 45-yearold guitar gathering dust in the corner has been re-strung and is ready to reverberate with painfully inept chords. A subscription has been taken out for a full season of Australian rugby league. A recipe for lamingtons has been downloaded to show family and friends what they have been missing from Australia’s culinary treasure trove. Seeds will be purchased for a passionfruit tree and kitchen herb garden. And books (those anachronistically paper-sheeted and bound versions) that have piled up on the shelf for several years can finally be read.

In many ways it seems weird, even slightly disconcerting, to finally be of pension-age. However, the opportunity to enjoy a more relaxed and leisurely daily schedule will be highly valued and appreciated, even if the affectionate day-to-day interaction with colleagues and associates who are also cherished friends will be sorely missed.

Back in the distant past, the average life expectancy was “three score years and 10”. Fortunately, most of us now expect (or hope) to survive beyond that age. And clearly, it is possible – and often positive – for many people to continue working well past retirement age, even to their last days. With that thought in mind, and the fact that being editor of Home & Lifestyle Magazine is an enormous privilege, many people in recent months have looked at me incredulously and asked, why? What will you do? Rattling off the aforementioned bucket list soon puts their minds at ease. Quite simply it’s time to convert the home “remote office” into a “mantuary”, to replace the ergonomic desk chair with an electronic armchair, and to gently and contentedly move on.

Nevertheless, putting all this cosmic peace of mind aside, sometimes we still need to be reminded just how fortunate we are to live in this part of Spain – indeed the world. A young family member visiting from Australia last month, her first time in Europe, put it succinctly with a refreshing dose of youthful enthusiasm. She was especially impressed, she said, by how just about everything is conveniently within walking distance, and added, “I also love the designated paths next to the beach so I can go for a run without getting taken out by a bike.” Just two of the simple, yet significantly salient, pleasures of life on the Costa.

As a final thought, these three quotes from poignantly diverse sources seem appropriate in bidding a fond adios (or hasta la vista):

“The afternoon of life is just as full of meaning as the morning; only, its meaning and purpose are different.” – Carl Gustav Jung

“Ageing is an extraordinary process whereby you become the person you always should have been.” – David Bowie

“Art is how we decorate space; music is how we decorate time.” – Jean-Michel Basquiat

THE IMPORTANCE OF OUTDOOR LIFE AT HOME

Living in southern Spain, where the weather beckons people outside, the concept of outdoor living is truly a way of life. As the spring season unfolds, there’s a growing emphasis on creating welcoming and stylish outdoor spaces within the stunning Mediterranean surroundings. With innovation taking a hold on most aspects of home design, shade solutions have also been part of that revolution. Cutting-edge parasols, awnings and pergolas are equipped with LED lighting and remote-controlled or smartphone functionality. However, nature will always play a part in outdoor furniture, which ideally should blend in with the surroundings. To that end, we have seen the increased use of teak as a material for outdoor dining chairs and tables, and earthy colours being implemented more prevalently within recent collections. It is no surprise that weather-resistant upholstery is in high demand, designed to withstand sun exposure, moisture and mildew, to ensure longevity and comfort. Outdoor kitchens are also gaining popularity, allowing homeowners to cook and entertain guests while enjoying beautiful weather and the natural environment. These kitchens often feature built-in grills, pizza ovens, sinks and refrigerators, creating a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living spaces. This spring, embracing outdoor living isn’t just about enjoying the return of warm weather. It’s about creating a harmonious connection with nature and making the most of our stunning surroundings with stylish yet practical design within the home.

CELEBRATING COLOUR AND NATURE THROUGH TABL EWARE

As we bid farewell to the muted tones of winter, the arrival of spring and summer beckons a celebration of colour and texture in our culinary experiences, embracing the exuberance of vibrant palettes. From the kaleidoscope of hues to the celebration of flowers and botanicals, colour and patterns adorn new tableware collections in all their glory.

The enduring charm of earthy textures, highlighted by natural wood and stone in rustic kitchen accessories, has been stunningly showcased in recent collections – offering not only aesthetic delight but also a profound appreciation of the inherent qualities that make each piece a cherished addition to our culinary repertoire. The warmth and character of natural wood imbues each piece with individual charm, elevating its status from a simple chopping board to a serving platter worthy of display at the most elegant of dining affairs. The delicate veining that marble possesses adds a touch of individuality to every culinary presentation and its smooth surface also provides an ideal canvas for food presentation, while its cool temperature keeps delicacies fresh and inviting.

Bernardaud’s Féerie collection, made with the finest Limoges porcelain, was designed by the French artist Michaël Cailloux, who wanted to create “an explosion of patterns like a firework. With a starry sky of small dandelion flowers, carrot flowers, clovers and wreaths of cherry blossoms. The hummingbird and the butterflies twirl, they are attracted by the light and the gold shards. A moving nature, joyful and bright.” Bernardaud is available through Gunni & Trentino in Marbella Club (www.gunnitrentino.es).

CRAFTING COMFORT AND STYLE FOR THE LIVING ROOM

The living room is much more than just a space for watching television or entertaining guests. It is also where family members gather to unwind, connect and share moments together. In a world where technology often isolates us, the living room serves as a sanctuary where we can escape the distractions of our devices and engage in meaningful conversations, creating a sense of warmth and togetherness that is essential for a happy home life. Therefore, the design of your living room is extremely important to evoke a sense of relaxation and well-being.

In recent years, one trend has emerged as a dominant force in living room aesthetics: the allure of white sofas and armchairs. Once considered a risky choice due to maintenance concerns, white upholstery has now become a symbol of contemporary sophistication, creating an illusion of spaciousness and airiness and transforming even the cosiest of spaces into luminous sanctuaries. While the allure of neutrals reigns supreme, there’s an undeniable charm in injecting rich colours into the living room palette. Deep hues such as mustard, burgundy, navy and emerald in soft and cosy upholstery fabrics not only infuse warmth and intimacy into the space but also provide a striking contrast against the pristine backdrop of white furnishings. However, the magic of a well-designed living room doesn’t end with the sofa alone. Often overlooked, coffee tables and side tables possess the transformative power to elevate the ambience of a room. These understated pieces can inject a touch of glamour or even make an artistic statement, serving as focal points amidst a sea of neutral hues. Whether it’s a sleek marble-topped coffee table or a quirky, sculptural side table, these accents add depth and character. Here are some inspirational ideas…

Eilersen’s Funen armchair is available as a low and a high lounge chair. The high chair (shown here) stands out with its long backrest and comfortable neck cushion, which makes the chair suitable for contemplation, rest and reading. REDEFINING DINING

The resurgence of home cooking and the growing popularity of hosting at home have put the dining area back into the spotlight. With more people now working from home than ever before, there is an increased demand for dining sets that are not just functional but also conducive to longer seating times and which can accommodate different types of gatherings – from casual family dinners and formal guest entertaining to a quiet place to work or study.

The quality of materials chosen for the dining table impacts both its function and its lifespan. Hardwoods such as oak and walnut are popular for their resilience and suitability for everyday use. Additionally, finishes that protect against stains and scratches while enhancing the natural grain of the wood can contribute to both the beauty and the durability of the table.

A comfortable dining chair is as important as a durable table. Chairs with adequate padding and soft upholstery can make a significant difference in how long people feel comfortable sitting at the table. Materials such as velvet or brushed cotton, together with supportive backrests and armrests, enhance the dining experience. Ergonomics also play a crucial role; chairs designed to support posture without sacrificing style are increasingly popular.

Simplicity is often at the core of design decisions, adopting a minimalist approach that showcases the quality and craftsmanship of the dining set as well as creating a calm dining area to relax and enjoy culinary delights.

Moroso’s No Waste table was inspired by the concepts of self-production rather than by reuse or creative recycling, with all elements of this table being taken from a single honeycomb aluminium sheet. Their iconic Banjooli handwoven polyethylene chairs were inspired by the nuptial dance that the male ostrich – banjooli in the Wolof language – performs to attract the female, spreading his wings to show off his beauty. REDESIGNING YOUR FLOORS WITH RUGS

The transformative role that rugs play in a living space is often underestimated, transcending their utilitarian purpose to enrich and enliven key areas of the home by infusing personality, warmth and depth. Three-dimensional designs, vibrant colours, diverse shapes and dynamic patterns elevate interior aesthetics through the simple addition of a rug. With a major focus on sustainability these days, rugs often champion ethical values and environmental stewardship through responsible sourcing and manufacturing. The use of eco-friendly materials such as organic cotton, bamboo silk and ethically sourced wool is now commonplace, reflecting a commitment to reducing ecological footprints without compromising on quality or design.

With colour always playing a pivotal role in setting the tone and mood of a room, rich jewel tones, deep earthy shades and vibrant patterns inject energy into a space that draws the eye and evokes a sense of vitality, adding creativity and expression.

Beyond traditional rectangular rugs, there is a diverse array of shapes and forms, offering endless possibilities for customisation and creativity. Circular rugs provide a sense of harmony and unity, while irregular shapes add an element of whimsy and playfulness. Geometric patterns, intricate medallions and abstract motifs further enhance visual interest, creating focal points that anchor the design scheme and reflect the unique personality of the space.

Contrary to popular belief, rugs seamlessly adapt to changing seasons and climates, remaining indispensable companions throughout the year and enriching living spaces with their timeless allure. So, choose a quality rug that will stand the test of time and you will be able to enjoy this versatile accessory all year round.

The Prism Palette collection by Layered is the result of an exclusive collaboration with Scandinavian visionary artist and designer Tekla Evelina Severin, known as Teklan. The collection features three different rugs in Teklan’s signature colour-blocking combinations, sustainably produced and handmade in 100 per cent wool (www.layeredinterior.com).

SWITCHING ON SOPHISTICATION

The transformative power of lighting can transcend mere functionality to create a work of art in its own right. Whether it’s casting a soft, ethereal glow, or providing direct light for tasks such as reading or working, lighting design plays a pivotal role in shaping the ambience and character of a room. From the grandeur of ornate chandeliers to the understated elegance of recessed fixtures, the possibilities are as diverse as they are captivating.

When it comes to decorative lighting, opulence often takes centre-stage. Elaborate chandeliers can serve as eye-catching focal points, infusing rooms with an air of sophistication. These luminous sculptures not only illuminate their surroundings but also serve as statement pieces, aesthetically elevating the space with their mere presence.

Yet, amidst the lavishness of decorative lighting, there also exists a quiet elegance in sheer simplicity. Minimalist design principles celebrate clean lines, uncluttered spaces and a sense of effortless style. In minimalist interiors, lighting takes on a more understated role, serving to enhance the architectural features of a room without overwhelming them, and casting gentle pools of light that subtly shape the ambience in the space it occupies.

Here are some ideas from the latest lighting collections to provide your home with brilliance this spring/summer…

SHAPING OUR SPACES WITH FABRICS

Fabrics play an important role in defining the warmth and texture of our living spaces. Fabrics serve as more than mere functional materials; they are integral elements of interior design that influence the ambience and mood of any room. Whether it’s the luxuriousness of a velvet sofa or the soft sophistication of linen curtains, textiles provide layers of tactile and visual warmth, transforming houses into inviting homes. Upholstery fabrics, chosen wisely, can rejuvenate an ageing piece of furniture or bring a splash of colour and elegance to a mundane space. From durable and stain-resistant synthetics, ideal for family homes, to opulent wools that grace formal settings, each material must be selected not only for its endurance but also for its texture and colour, offering an opportunity to infuse personality into every corner of a room that will stand the test of time. Similarly, curtain fabrics are essential in framing our views and filtering natural light, thus giving us control over the luminosity of a room. They range from sheer to blackout, each serving different functional needs while offering a distinct palette and pattern to complement the style of the room. Beyond functionality, curtains add a finishing touch to a room’s décor, softening acoustic dynamics and even enhancing insulation. Take a look at these ideas…

The Millefleurs collection by Rubelli by Formafantasma, shown here in their Geraneo colourway, is an all-over jacquard with a graceful miniature floral design. The swarm of small flowers and tiny leaves draws the eye, giving a sense of high energy and playfulness. CASA JAGUAR

SETTING A NEW STANDARD FOR LUXURY IN HARMONY WITH NATURE

SUPPLIED BY ATLAS GROUP

Perched within the picturesque landscape of one of Marbella’s most prestigious gated communities, Casa Jaguar is a newly-built architectural gem that was recently featured in El País newspaper.

The villa is a harmonious fusion of modern design and natural elements, constructed on a sloping plot of land with a 65 per cent gradient. Three levels intertwine with the surrounding Andalucian terrain, comprising 500 square metres of living space integrated into the hillside.

Designed to maximise environmental synergy, Casa Jaguar has garden roofs for thermal insulation and panoramic vistas which blur the lines between modern architecture and the earthy landscape of Marbella.

Designed by Archidom architects and built by Atlas Group, the villa has a minimalist façade, wrapping the property and concealing a sanctuary of comfort and understated luxury. It is characterised by neutral tones and natural materials that accentuate the light and space. The ground floor invites communal living, with an open-plan kitchen and living area,

accompanied by two bedrooms with en suite bathrooms. The first floor homes the master suite, where a private terrace offers a sanctuary with breath-taking vistas. The outdoor experience is further elevated by two terraces, a swimming pool and a solarium. The basement houses a haven of wellness amenities including a Turkish bath, sauna, jacuzzi and gym.

The property’s owner, Ace Korkchi, told El País, “This property is not just a home; it’s a blend of sophisticated living and environmental consciousness, setting a new standard for luxury in harmony with nature. Casa Jaguar embodies the pinnacle of architectural ingenuity, offering a serene retreat that stands in respectful dialogue with its surroundings.”

SALONE DEL MOBILE MILAN THE WORLD’S MOST IMPORTANT DESIGN FAIR

Home & Lifestyle Magazine once again joined the tens of thousands of design lovers from all over the world to visit the 62nd edition of Salone del Mobile hosted in Italy’s design capital, Milan. The buzz and positive energy were testament to the fact that this was the busiest show to date, with 1,950 exhibitors taking part and a record turnout of 361,417 visitors.

This year the organisers delved into the world of neuroscience to enhance the visitor experience, making it more inclusive while also bringing added benefits to the carefully-chosen exhibitors to enable them to communicate their collections more effectively to visitors – and evoke even more emotion and excitement about their products. There was a strong focus on the value of honest manufacturing processes, inclusiveness, innovation and sustainability as a way of life, and not just as a concerted effort. The organisers communicated this through narratives relevant to the global design community via initiatives such as the Salone’s membership of the United Nations Global Compact, the ratification of its Sustainability Policy, its commitment to reconfirmation of ISO 20121 certification and the Green Guidelines circulated amongst exhibitors. The two biennials returned this year, EuroCucina / FTK, Technology for the Kitchen, where performers, artists, designers and chefs from around the world came together to celebrate gastronomy and the ways in which we can prepare, cook, store and present culinary delights. Samsung held

vibrant show-cooking events in their enormous jaw-dropping kitchen, with a well-known Italian chef whose lively shows were beamed out on an enormous television screen. Another noteworthy stand was by Miele, where visitors entered through a tunnel lit up with mesmerising lights to the sound of a beating heart, enlightening the senses.

Other exhibitors that caught our eye were Gessi (who never let us down with their creative prowess when it comes to designing their stands), TM Leader (who also wowed the visitors when presenting their contemporary furniture in brightly-coloured booths), Edra, Meritalia, Tacchini and Caos Creativo, to name just a few…

Just one of the many thought-provoking exhibitions was “Under the Surface”, which showcased the essential role of water as a nurturing element through the depiction of a massive island beneath water. This collaborative creation by Accurat, Design Group Italia and Emiliano Ponzi from Salotto at the Salone del Mobile Milano serves as a compelling investigation into the design of bathrooms emphasising the vital need for conscientious and effective

water management by concentrating on the conservation of global water resources. The project seeks to explore the water footprint associated with the bathroom furniture supply chain, bringing into consideration more sustainable methods.

This year there was even more of a focus on encouraging youth to be involved by allowing students to visit the fair on the Friday, which is the last day for traders before the fair opens up to the public. The idea behind this was to give students a true insight into the world of design and how design professionals work during trade fairs. As always, there was an area for emerging talents, SaloneSatellite, which gives talented young designers the platform to showcase their prototypes and ideas. Many have become important names within the industry.

The president of Salone del Mobile, Maria Porro, held numerous formidable speeches and discussions throughout the week. One of the many poignant topics she spoke about was artificial intelligence – a hot topic on the lips of many at the moment. When asked what her thoughts were on AI, Porro

acknowledged that it plays a crucial role within the professional world as a whole, helping to drive innovation, increase productivity and save lives within the medical industry. However, she stressed the importance of the human touch, fostering creativity, making emotional connections, and taking into consideration ethical values and intellectual property rights.

During the week, design companies across Milan held cocktail parties inviting important members of the industry to view their new collections within their showrooms while enjoying a celebratory glass (or two) and canapés. We attended the awe-inspiring Moooi event where Marcel Wanders himself was present. The Moooi showroom, which looked more like a museum than the usual interior design studio that we are used to visiting, presented the new collections on plinths to a rapturous crowd.

In conclusion, for yet another year the Salone del Mobile Milan provided an exceptional showcase of ideas, concepts and trends that were at the cutting-edge forefront of global design and home décor. Salonemilano.it

ARCADIA A96-01

HOLISTIC DESIGN CONCEPT

IN HARMONY WITH NATURE

The A96-01 charts a new course for Arcadia Yachts. The company’s latest model, which had its world premiere at last year’s Cannes Yachting festival, is highlighted by a broad focus on connecting with nature. To that end, the A96-01’s wide spaces merge into the surrounding landscape and panorama, while its concept, external lines and on-board technology have been designed to foster a profound sense of well-being.

The 30-metre yacht (nearly eight metres in the beam) comprises five cabins, offers high levels of service, ensured by the separation of guest and crew flows (including a dedicated crew stairway), and is equipped with latestgeneration propulsion and stabiliser systems. Interior designer Igor Lobanov was, according to Arcadia, inspired by Art Deco and the pursuit of wellbeing, tracing sleek curves and dark lacquered surfaces.

“From the stern deck to the bow, it is a succession of spaces in continuity with each other to allow the owner to choose between the conviviality of the main deck, greater discretion on the upper deck and total privacy in the bow area. Sliding doors provide versatility and, in the main and upper deck lounges, side and aft walls can be slid open to transform these settings into open-air spaces.”

The owner’s full-beam, light-filled cabin is in the forward section of the main deck, while the four guest cabins are on the lower deck. For the interiors, the shipyard asked Lobanov to prioritise natural and, where possible, ecofriendly materials in a design characterised by soft lines and furnishings. The colour palette is neutral and pale, with dark or metallic accents for contrast. With the A96-01 extending over more than 400 square metres of liveable

space, a considerable amount of work was dedicated to optimising weights, increasing structural comfort and boosting the efficiency of all the wiring and piping systems, as well as the engine room’s thermo-acoustic insulation.

Four Volvo Penta IPS 1350 engines offer a top speed of 23-24 knots and high manoeuvrability (joystick control) and stability when pitching thanks to the interceptors and satellite dynamic positioning system. The shallow draught and compact engine size mean that A96 can cruise in practically any waters.

The A96-01 is equipped with the most advanced port manoeuvring systems. Sweden-based Volvo supplied the assisted docking system that facilitates mooring operations, ensuring maximum safety in even the most demanding conditions. Garmin, together with Arcadia, developed the surround view camera system, a cutting-edge 360-degree vision system that offers a bird’s eye view using an array of six cameras installed in the hull that transmit information in real time about the open water around the boat and the distance from any obstacles. The system also provides virtual manoeuvring guides and can detect and highlight moving objects.

The optional silent mode system – rated over 100kWh and powered in part by solar panels – guarantees up to eight to nine hours of onboard life in silent mode, while the “quiet” air-conditioning in the cabins ensures a uniform temperature throughout. Waveless Stab fins from CMC Marine round out the range for optimum comfort, at both sea and anchor.

The vessel won the “Innovation Trophy” for yachts between 80 and 98 feet at the World Yacht Trophy, and was a finalist in the BOAT International Design & Innovation Awards in the “best interior design” and “eco” categories.

INSIDE MÁLAGA’S EXCLUSIVE ONLY YOU HOTEL

Málaga, a somewhat overlooked destination many years ago, has undergone a significant transformation, emerging as a dynamic hotspot for tourists from around the globe. This transformation can be attributed to several factors, including infrastructure development, cultural revitalisation and strategic marketing efforts. Furthermore, Málaga has embraced its identity as a Mediterranean destination, capitalising on its stunning coastline, warm climate and vibrant culinary scene.

A key driver is the expansion and modernisation of its transportation networks, such as the airport and high-speed train connections. Improved accessibility has made it easier for tourists to reach the city, thereby increasing visitor numbers.

The Palladium Hotel Group, whose impressive portfolio spans the globe across seven countries, owns 17 highly-acclaimed hotels around Spain including the Hard Rock Hotel in Puerto Banús and Only YOU in Málaga city. This year marks Only YOU’s 10th anniversary, so Home & Lifestyle Magazine

went to pay them a visit to find out more about the buzzy establishment that everyone is talking about in the heart of this revitalised city.

With 93 rooms in total, Only YOU have a wide range in both style and price to suit any type of guest. We stayed in a Premium SEA room with impressive views over the Muelle Uno marina and Mediterranean Sea.

The room was a very good size with a large comfortable bed and bedside touchscreen technology to control the lighting and temperature.

Beyond wooden slatted doors there was a chic bathroom comprising a contemporary freestanding bathtub, walk-in shower and washbasin/vanity area with industrial-style design features.

With the hotel being in such a central location in the city, it was surprising to us how quiet the room was and, as a result, a sound night’s sleep was enjoyed. The design of the hotel was carried out by the Proyecto Singular studio. Their concept was to bring together modern urban design and the Mediterranean influences that surround the hotel.

TRAVEL & GETAWAYS...
162 MAY & JUNE 2024

As you enter the hotel through its outside terrace you are immediately struck by the lavish decoration. Tastefully bold, the interior design has art deco vibes, adopting geometric shapes, stylised curves, atmospheric lighting, luxurious materials such as velvet, brass and chrome, and bold colours and metallic finishes.

Their focus on art, music and culture is very much evident all around the hotel, and thanks to this Only YOU has a special energy and an uplifting ambience that cannot be explained in words as the experience is more sensorial. There are three main communal areas: Carmen, Lola and Lolita.

On the hotel’s ground floor is the bar and restaurant Carmen, which is open to the public and offers a bistro experience with an impressive array of dishes that are largely inspired by Andalucía, ideal for sharing or enjoying as a casual bite. They often have live music and hold cultural events in this area, details of which can always be found across their social media platforms.

On the seventh floor next to their fully-equipped gym is Lola, which offers a more formal indoor and al fresco dining experience to Carmen. Its menu is focused on market cuisine showcasing zero-kilometre ingredients that pay homage to traditional “malagueño” cuisine cooked in a charcoal oven. Go one floor higher and you reach Lolita Skyview Pool & Lounge – an impressive rooftop terrace that enjoys panoramic views over the city. During the day, guests of the hotel can enjoy the infinity pool, bar and sun-lounging area and, after four o’clock in the afternoon, visitors from outside can also join them to relax and admire the sunset from this fabulous viewpoint.

El Pimpi

This is a true Andalucian icon. For more than 40 years, El Pimpi has been the most emblematic restaurant and tavern in Málaga. Now a new outpost has arrived in Marbella at Puente Romano Beach Resort, where it has been given a design-driven cosmopolitan make-over. The new restaurant still captures the magic of the original El Pimpi Málaga, with iconic wine barrels stacked under arches, handmade azulejo tiles and vintage feria posters, but then it

takes this to a new level with a fresh and contemporary Mediterranean vibe. The menu is a true gastronomic experience with authentic Andalucian tapas and dining including the best jamón ibérico, handmade cheeses and classic sharing plates, as well as premium meats and local fish, prepared to timehonoured recipes and paired with Spanish wines. THE ESSENCE OF ROCA VIVA WINES AT SUBTIL WINE BAR

Roca Viva Wines is a passionate project led by David Raya and Peter Freislederer. Launched in 2019, the idea was born out of their admiration for natural wines and a dedication to the recovery and regeneration of exceptional vineyards in Andalucía.

Each wine tells a unique story, reflecting the authentic character of indigenous grapes and a commitment to environmentally friendly practices.

In collaboration with local winemakers in Málaga, Cádiz, Córdoba and Granada, Roca Viva Wines produces clean, precise and 100 per cent natural wines. With no temperature control, these wines capture the authenticity of each terroir. All the varieties – Moscatel from Manilva (Málaga province),

Pedro Ximénez from Montilla (Córdoba), Palomino from Trebujena (Cádiz) and Tempranillo, Jaén Blanco, Vigiriega and Jaén Tinto from the Alpujarra (Granada) – stand out for their uniqueness and incomparable quality.

Each glass of a Roca Viva Wine wine is pure magic, with its respect for the land, the grapes and the people deliciously palpable. All Roca Viva Wines are available exclusively from Subtil Wine Bar & Artisanal Products, to take home from either their wine bar or their boutique delicatessen.

Regular wine tasting events – attended by the winegrowers and winemakers – are held at Subtil Wine Bar, with the next one scheduled for 22 May.

WINE NOTES... 166 MAY & JUNE 2024

MELONS PACK A HEALTHY PUNCH

Go for melons this summer. Eating melons on a regular basis may help improve your vision and provide a host of other health benefits. Just one cup of cantaloupe contains six per cent of the daily recommended amount of fibre, which can allow a person to feel full longer. Additionally, it helps regulate digestion and keeps blood sugar in check.

“Vision can decline with ageing, but consuming antioxidant-rich foods such as cantaloupe and other melons can help protect your eyes,” says American registered dietitian Katherine Basbaum, with the University of Virginia (UVA) Health System Virginia in Charlottesville. “Some of these antioxidants include lutein, and vitamins A and C.”

Cantaloupe is in the Cucurbitaceae family, together with watermelon, cucumber and honeydew. A one-cup serving of cantaloupe has only 50-55 calories, but it contains 106 per cent of vitamin A and 95 per cent of vitamin C daily recommendations. In addition, cantaloupe is rich in potassium and folate.

A cup of honeydew has 60 calories, 51 per cent of the vitamin C daily recommendation and 11 per cent of the daily recommended potassium. Honeydew also contains fibre, folate and vitamin B6. Watermelon contains about 45-50 calories per one-cup serving. It is rich in the antioxidant lycopene, which is linked to decreased risk of cancer, heart disease and age-related eye disorder. Watermelon also is rich in vitamin A, vitamin C and potassium.

Because melons have such a high water content and contain potassium, they may be good for maintaining healthy blood pressure levels. “Melon is about 90 per cent water by weight, so it can be a great way for adults over 50 to stay hydrated,” sats Basbaum. ”Sense of thirst can decline with

age so eating fruit like cantaloupe and melon can help fill in gaps from drinking less water.” Cantaloupe has beta-carotene, a carotenoid that is responsible for giving fruits their colour. It contains more beta-carotene than other yellow and orange fruits including oranges, nectarines, mangoes, peaches and grapefruit. Beta-carotene is converted into vitamin A in the body and assists with blood cell production and immune response, while also promoting eye health.

When picking a melon, it is recommended that you choose a firm one with no significant bruising. Watermelons are best if they have a yellow belly. This indicates they have been allowed to ripen in the field instead of the grocery store or marketplace.

If possible, it is recommended that you don’t eat pre-cut cantaloupe because it is uncertain how long it has been since it was cut. After a knife cuts through, any pathogens on the outside of the cantaloupe are now on the inside. It is important to wash the melon before cutting, for food safety. Besides eating them raw, melons are excellent for making frozen popsicles by pureeing the melon with a little sugar and a splash of lime juice. Pour into moulds and freeze a great summertime snack. Melons are also great for infusing water, which serves as a delicious beverage containing no added sugar. Another suggestion is making kebabs using grapes, melons and strawberry cubes. Melons can make good smoothies since their flavour is mild and they pair nicely with other fruits.

MANAGING PAIN WITH EXERCISE

There is a significant amount of research telling us that exercise can help in the management of joint and muscle pain. However, new data indicates that exercise may also be useful in treating pain caused by cancer. Typically, many cancers cause pain: bone cancer may cause pain in the joints and limbs, or a tumour may press on nerves causing pain. For cancer survivors or those in recovery the treatments themselves, such as surgery or radiotherapy, may cause pain. It is thought that around 40 per cent of patients post-cancer are suffering with long-term pain, and it is only now that we are beginning to address this issue.

In a recent study by Christopher Swain and colleagues, over 60,000 adults were asked about their exercise habits. Of the 60,000 enrolled more than 10,000 were people who had a history of cancer. The participants were asked to report on the amount of moderate-intensity physical activity they performed and any change in that activity over a two-year period. They also reported on the intensity of any pain they felt regularly and on their use of painkillers.

The researchers found that the more time spent performing moderate physical activity was strongly related to reporting lower pain, although the use of analgesics was not associated. The relationship between pain and activity was also evident in the participants who had a history of cancer.

When the researchers compared those who were inactive with those who completed at least 150 minutes per week of moderate physical activity they found that active participants had lower intensities of pain.

Although there are many factors that might explain the relationship – type of cancer, time since diagnosis, age and gender – the researchers were able to account for these influences in their analysis.

Moderate physical activity can be anything that involves movement that causes slight breathlessness. Fast walking, gardening and heavy housework would all count as moderate physical activity. Guidelines recommend that for heart health we should all undertake at least 150 minutes a week of moderate physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity. What this study adds is that this amount of exercise can also help reduce pain.

If you want help becoming more active, for whatever reason, please get in touch.

PASTA ONER

PROMINE NT CZECH ARTIST TO EXHIBIT WORK IN MARBELLA FOR THE FIRST TIME

EXHIBITION DATES: 10 MAY-31 JULY

One of the Czech Republic’s most prominent contemporary artists, Pasta Oner, is set to brighten up Marbella’s cultural scene this spring-summer.

The renowned artist will be holding an exhibition in SIN Studio Gallery, a glass sculpture gallery, from 10 May to 31 July.

The new gallery is presenting famous Czech and international artists to the southern Spanish public under the patronage of the Czech embassy in Madrid. Pasta Oner (real name Zdenek Randa) was born in 1979 in Trencin (Czech Republic). As a highly creative personality, he has been profiled in recent years within the boundaries of classic independent and public gallery operations, where he combines and transcends the classic genre categories of pop art and cartoon aesthetics.

According to the exhibition organisers, “Despite the fact that at the core of his work he touches on the principles of ‘post-production’, his work is distinctive compared with the current dominant trends of post-conceptual strategies in the visual arts.” The focus of Pasta’s work is acrylic painting

and the creation of hanging paintings, as well as the design of spatial objects, sculptures and installations and the realisation of murals in the form of large-format paintings in public spaces.

“The artist places traditional themes of fascination with the worlds of wealth, sex, faith, luxury brands and consumer beauty into a new modern context of the cyber society, the world of exponentially increasing speed of information transfer and clip aesthetics of everyday experience.”

The exhibition will be launched with a ceremonial preview on 9 May at 5 p.m., with both the artist and representatives of the Czech embassy present. Those interested in reserving a place at the preview should contact SIN Studio Gallery directly.

LIV GOLF PIONEERING TOURNAMENT RETURNS TO VALDERRAMA

Royal Valderrama Golf will once again host the LIV Golf Andalucía tournament this summer, when Jon Rahm will be making his Spanish debut in the pacesetting global golfing league. This will be the second year that the event is held at Spain’s most iconic course. Last year Talor Gooch won the individual title, beating fellow Americans Bryson DeChambeau by one stroke and Brooks Koepka by three; while Torque GC, captained by Joaquín Niemann (Chile) and also including Sebastián Muñoz (Chile), David Puig (Spain) and Mito Pereira (Colombia), secured the team trophy. Launched in 2022, the LIV Golf league, which has revolutionised the golfing world with its innovative format (54 holes and shotgun start), party atmosphere out on the course and lucrative prizemoney ($20

million each event), comprises 14 tournaments around the world in 2024 and 54 players representing 13 four-member teams (plus two “wild cards”). Jon Rahm became the latest star to join late in 2023, and his new team, Legion XIII (with another new recruit, Tyrrell Hatton, Kieran Vincent and Caleb Surratt), won the opening 2024 event in Mexico.

The 2024 Valderrama leg will be held from 12 to 14 July. Later in the year, the Costa will host two other international tournaments: DP World Tour – Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters at Royal Sotogrande Golf Club from 17 to 20 October; and Ladies European Tour – Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España at El Paraíso Golf Club from 28 November to 1 December.

SWIMMING POOL CONSTRUCTION IN SPAIN CRUCIAL STEPS AND LEGALISATION

ARTICLE SUPPLIED BY WELEX LAWYERS & ACCOUNTANTS

Building a swimming pool is an exciting project that adds value and enjoyment to any property on the Costa del Sol. However, it is crucial to follow a proper process to avoid long-term legal problems. In this article, we explore the steps necessary to obtain the required licences and permits, as well as the importance of legalisation in the case of unauthorised construction.

The first step is to hire a competent technician to assist you in applying for the required licences for the construction. He or she will have to apply to the relevant town hall for a building permit, presenting a technical and execution project that must include the following:

• Descriptive report

• Construction report

• Compliance with technical building code

• Calculation of structure and installations

• Geotechnical information on the land

• Health and safety study

• Quality control plan

• Construction waste management

If, based on the documentation received, the town hall verifies that the project complies with the local regulations in force, you will be granted a major works licence (“licencia de obra mayor”) for the swimming pool construction. With the licence granted, you can proceed with the construction following the approved technical project. Once the work has been completed, it is crucial to sign the declaration of new construction (“declaración de obra nueva“) before a notary in Spain. In addition, it is recommended to register

the swimming pool in the Land Registry to validate the construction against third parties and ensure its legality in Spain.

If for some reason the pool was built without the required licences in Spain, it is possible to legalise it. To do this, it is essential to have a competent technician draw up a technical legalisation project, complying with current regulations. The process will include the payment of municipal fees and taxes.

Once approved by, for example, Marbella Town Hall, the declaration of new construction must be signed before a notary, and we recommend registering it in the Land Registry in order to make it valid in the eyes of third parties.

As mentioned above, whether the swimming pool has been built with a building licence in Spain or it has been legalised afterwards, the deed of new construction (“escritura de obra nueva”) must be signed in the presence of a notary in Spain. This declaration of construction by means of a public deed is subject to stamp duty (“actos jurídicos documentados”).

At Welex, we can assist you with the signing of the declaration of new construction, registration of the swimming pool in the Land Registry and filing of taxes.
