LIFESTYLE & LEISURE
EDITOR’S
School’s out for summer, and the Coast is basking in all its sun-drenched splendour. There’s something so irresistible about our way of life and the simple privilege of living outdoors that acts as a timely reminder of why so many of us are drawn to life in southern Spain and make it home.
In our summer issue of Home & Lifestyle Magazine, we naturally shine a spotlight on outdoor living, not just as a design category but as a reflection of how we live.
At this time of year, these spaces become the heart of our homes. Deeply cushioned loungers and sofas to sink into create pockets of comfort for the ultimate in relaxation all day long. Dining areas host gatherings that last well into the evening and the rise of outdoor kitchens brings about even more social connection.
Whether you’re enjoying breakfast on a south-facing balcony or hosting long, lazy lunches on a terrace overlooking the sea, your exterior space should feel like an extension of you, your personality, and your sense of style. And our extended outdoor living feature offers pages of inspiration to help you get the most out of yours.
Elsewhere in the world of design, a quiet but compelling shift is underway. While events like 3daysofdesign, held recently in Copenhagen, still lean heavily into Scandinavian minimalism, colour and pattern are making a confident comeback. Think statement ceramics, vibrantly upholstered outdoor furniture, and wallpaper that acts as art. The mood isn’t maximalist, but it is a bold celebration of character and craftsmanship, and a cue that when design is done right, it resonates far beyond aesthetics.
Looking ahead, the design calendar is already busying up for autumn. Feria Hábitat València returns in late September with a reinvigorated programme showcasing leading international brands and manufacturers, and rising talent, across furniture, lighting, textiles, and other disciplines. As proud media partners of the event, which is the largest design fair in Spain, we’ll be on the ground to bring you the trends, ideas, and conversations shaping interiors for the year ahead.
Until then, enjoy the sunshine and your slice of the great outdoors.

EMBRACING THE OUTDOORS
As we enter the height of summer, outdoor spaces become extensions of our homes where, dare we state the cliché, style meets function. Dining sets are no longer just practical additions but elegant backdrops for leisurely alfresco meals, inviting guests to linger and enjoy. Wood and ceramic remain favourites in Mediterranean settings, offering natural beauty and lasting durability. The rise of outdoor kitchens reflects a shift towards inclusive, open-air living, where the cook becomes part of the gathering. Deep, inviting sofas and relaxed sunbeds create cosy corners for lounging, while colour makes a bold return with rich greens, terracotta, ochres and ocean blues echoing the landscape and bringing a layered, expressive aesthetic to life outdoors.
As the sun climbs higher, parasols and shade solutions come into sharp focus. Whether sculptural or playfully patterned, they not only complete the look but offer practical comfort. Now’s the time to invest in well-made, versatile pieces that transform your garden or terrace into a true summer sanctuary.

WALLS THAT SPEAK STYLE
Wallpaper has long moved beyond being a mere backdrop. Today, it’s a powerful design statement that sets the mood the moment you step into a room. From deep tones that envelop you in drama to pastel accents that evoke the lightness of summer, colour alone can transform how a space feels. Bold patterns and graphic motifs become instant focal points often functioning as artwork in their own right with painterly textures and expressive detail. Even the simplest wallpaper benefits from a touch of texture, adding depth and tactile intrigue to otherwise plain walls. Whether subtle or striking, wallpaper is all about atmosphere and the emotions it stirs.
References to nature continue to prevail in wallpaper design with botanical prints, organic textures, and landscape-inspired motifs bringing the outside in. Whether it’s lush florals, delicate grasses, or abstract interpretations of natural elements, these designs offer a sense of calm and connection to the environment. They breathe life into interiors, softening contemporary spaces and adding a fresh, grounded feeling that evokes open skies, forest walks, or sun-drenched gardens no matter the season.

LUXURY LIVING ROOMS
When it comes to living room design, seating is no longer just about comfort, it’s a cornerstone of style and self-expression. From sculptural statement armchairs that act as functional art pieces to low, blocky sofas that exude casual, contemporary elegance, the latest trends are all about making an impact while staying effortlessly liveable.
Neutral tones such as creamy beiges, soft greys, and warm taupe, still reign supreme, offering a calm and cohesive backdrop that works in almost any setting. However, for those looking to inject personality and flair, deep, rich colours like forest green, burnt orange, or midnight blue are making a confident comeback. These bold hues add a sense of drama and sophistication, creating dynamic focal points and elevating the room’s overall design narrative.
Equally important to the visual flow of the space is clever storage. From sleek built-in cabinetry to stylish sideboards and multifunctional coffee tables, integrated storage solutions help maintain a sense of order, keeping everyday items neatly tucked away and surfaces clutter-free. The result is a space that looks polished but supports relaxed, easy living.
Whether you’re curating a serene sanctuary or a vibrant social hub, the right mix of shape, texture, colour, and storage can transform your living room from ordinary to unforgettable.

GROUNDED IN STYLE
In the world of interior design, rugs are powerful tools that can transform the atmosphere of a room. Especially in minimalist living spaces where simplicity reigns, rugs in warm, rich earthy tones introduce a sense of depth and cosiness without overwhelming the aesthetic. The right rug can soften stark lines and cold flooring, offering comfort underfoot and visual warmth. Varying shapes and textures draw the eye, adding character and subtle intrigue to otherwise pared-back interiors. While often associated with colder months, rugs are a year-round essential, contributing to acoustic comfort by absorbing sound and echo, and serving as versatile design elements that blend function with artistry. Whether plain or patterned, a thoughtfully chosen rug can quietly elevate a space, making it feel more inviting and complete.

THE ZOCO HOME JOURNEY
FROM LOCAL GEM TO GLOBAL BRAND
INTERVIEW WITH JOHANNA WECKSTRÖM, FOUNDING OWNER OF ZOCO HOME
Johanna, thank you for welcoming us into your showroom. Zoco Home is a name many design lovers know and admire, but take us back to the beginning - how did it all start?
It’s hard to believe it’s been 12 years. We started in 2013 with an online business and then took a relatively small showroom on the Mijas Road in 2017, selling accessories and a select range of furniture. It was just me and my husband, and a handful of products that we genuinely loved. There was no grand plan - just a passion for interior design and a deep appreciation for craftsmanship.
And now Zoco Home is a global brand. That’s an incredible journey. It really has been. From that tiny local shop to having two large showrooms, our own warehouse, and a thriving online store, it’s been a steady evolution. We’ve grown organically, never rushing the process but always staying ahead of trends and listening to our clients.
One of the hallmarks of Zoco Home is its distinctive aesthetic. How would you describe it?
We’re deeply rooted in Scandinavian minimalism - clean lines, simplicity, and function - but we always aim to balance that with a sense of cosiness
and warmth. Natural materials are essential: wood, linen, earthy tones. We want our spaces to feel peaceful and inviting. That balance is everything.
Scandinavian design has definitely become a major trend, especially here on the southern coast of Spain. With so many similar showrooms appearing, how do you stay ahead?
We’re constantly evolving. We never sit still when it comes to sourcing. We started with Moroccan products, and while we still love that influence, we now source from all over the world and we have our own production in several countries. What sets us apart is our eye for unique pieces and how we integrate them into a holistic style. Manufacturing our own furniture also gives us control over quality and design integrity, which is crucial to our brand.
That explains the consistency. People often comment on how reliable Zoco Home is, both in product and service. Absolutely. Quality control is everything to us. Our clients know they can trust what we deliver because we’ve put systems in place to ensure every piece meets our standards. It’s also thanks to our incredible team - we now have over 70 employees who are passionate and aligned with our ethos.
That’s quite a team to lead. Yet you seem remarkably calm and grounded. How do you manage it all?
(Laughs) Well, I’m lucky! We have a trained team that genuinely enjoys what they do. We support each other, and there’s a strong belief in the Zoco Home concept. That shared vision makes the day-to-day manageable and gives me a great deal of reassurance, even when things get hectic.
Your recent expansion was opening the Puerto Banús showroom, which includes a stylish restaurant. Have you been happy with how the concept has been received by clients?
Yes, we opened it over a year and a half ago, and it’s become a favourite spot - not just for design lovers but also for people who want a beautiful place to have coffee, breakfast, or lunch. The space is vast and curated to reflect how people live. Zoco Café provides indoor and outdoor seating, and complements the showroom, giving visitors a full lifestyle experience.
The showrooms are not the only part of your business, as you’re also involved in design projects around the world…
That’s right. We’ve worked on residential and commercial projects throughout Europe, and as far away as Asia and the Americas. On the Costa del Sol, we carry out over 120 interior design projects a year. Also, as part of our full commitment to Cudeca Foundation, we have been involved with a really exciting day care project for a new children’s area at the Cudeca hospice in Benalmádena (Málaga). That was a very meaningful project. We worked closely with medical professionals to ensure the design was both functional and soothing for children. It was a challenge but incredibly rewarding.
It’s clear that Zoco Home is much more than a furniture brand - it’s a full design philosophy. What’s next?
We’ll continue expanding thoughtfully. We never want to lose the essence of what Zoco Home is about. Whether it’s a single product, a home, or a larger project, the goal is the same: to create spaces that feel calm, authentic, and connected to nature. I want Zoco Home to always be a source of inspiration, and I can’t wait to see where the journey leads us next.
Zoco Home is situated in C.C. Idea on the Mijas Road and C.C. Rimesa in Puerto Banús (www.zocohome.com).
SPACES THAT TELL YOUR STORY
INTERVIEW WITH GIGI VALSTER OF GV CONCEPTS
With a refined eye for detail and a passion for creating interiors that feel personal and practical, GV Concepts has carved out a distinct niche in the world of high-end design and project management.
Founded by Dutch designer Gigi Valster, the company operates between the Netherlands and southern Spain, delivering full-service interior design, renovation, and relocation support for clients looking for homes that reflect their lifestyle. From turnkey projects to curated spaces, GV Concepts brings a seamless, thoughtful approach to every commission.
Gigi, you recently completed a project in Marbella, yet you are based in Rotterdam in the Netherlands. What’s your connection to the coast? Marbella has always been a second home to me. My parents first took us when I was around 16 and I’ve visited many times since, both with family and friends. When my parents wanted to buy a second home, it was a natural choice. It’s only a 2.5 hour flight from Rotterdam, so it’s easy to visit, even for short trips.
Can you tell us more about the job you’ve recently done in Marbella?
My first project in Marbella was for a Dutch family who had purchased a beautiful apartment in the Paraiso area of Benahavís. The complex already had a charming, authentic feel, and the brief was to echo that
through the interior design. The family wanted to preserve a strong sense of holiday, with plenty of linen, rattan, and locally-sourced pieces. It was important to them that the space felt different from their main home in the Netherlands, which is modern and minimal. I appreciated that contrast; the idea of having two very different living environments that reflect a different mood and lifestyle. It made the design process more creative and rewarding, and I personally love the idea of stepping into a second home that transports you somewhere entirely different.
How do you usually balance your signature style with a client’s personal taste?
My personal style is all about creating a sense of tranquillity. I tend to avoid anything overly fussy and gravitate towards soft, calming hues with subtle touches of authenticity, like a well-chosen antique piece (even though my overall style is quite modern). To me, that little twist transforms a house into a home. But as much as I have a clear aesthetic, it’s equally important that the interior reflects the client’s personality. I always aim to integrate something truly authentic to them and weave that into the design. It makes the space feel lived-in and personal. I remember watching home makeover shows as a child and thinking that they were beautiful but very polished and impersonal. That’s never the goal for me. If a space still needs something to make it feel real, then the job isn’t finished.
How do you translate the essence of who a client is into the spaces you create for them?
Every project begins with the client, taking into account their lifestyle, the journeys they’ve taken, the pieces they’ve collected, and even the character of the home they’ve chosen. They all shape the final design. Practical considerations like how they use the space are naturally important, but what truly defines the project is their personal story. I always aim for a balance where my signature style forms a subtle, consistent thread, but never overshadows each client’s individuality. The ultimate compliment is when a friend or relative of theirs walks into the space and says, “This feels so you.” That sense of recognition is when I know I’ve captured their essence.
Which design trend do you think is here to stay, and which one would you happily leave behind?
The trend for round shapes in interiors is one I believe is here to stay, and with good reason. They’re timeless, versatile, and particularly effective in more rectangular spaces, where they soften the overall look and create a friendlier, more open feel. On the other hand, I’ve never quite understood the appeal for dining chairs on wheels. The only time I’ve used them is when a client has insisted. Even then, I make sure they’re fully upholstered so they blend in. But honestly, they just feel dated and completely out of step with the kind of calm, considered spaces I like to create. For me, great design should feel effortless, and that’s always what I come back to.

REDEFINING OUTDOOR LIVING
KEW GARDENS AND POOLS
BY ALEJANDRO GUERRERO, LANDSCAPE DESIGNER AT KEW GARDENS AND POOLS
There’s a unique rhythm to life in southern Spain; sun-drenched days, warm evenings that unfold over dinner on the terrace, and a lifestyle that naturally blurs the lines between indoors and out. It’s this effortless connection with nature that lies at the heart of Kew Gardens and Pools, a company that creates stunning exteriors that are reshaping the way people experience their outdoor spaces across Andalucía.
Founded with a clear intention to help people live better outside, Kew takes a highly considered approach to landscape and pool design, build, and maintenance. From courtyard sanctuaries to expansive hillside plots, every project is a unique canvas, shaped by its location, architecture, and the lifestyle of the people who live there.
Design that listens to its environment
At Kew, sustainability is the essential starting point. With Andalucía’s long, dry seasons and intense summer sun, designing for climate and conservation is a necessity. The team leans into this challenge, using drought-tolerant planting schemes, intelligent irrigation, and materials that complement the natural surroundings. Pools are fitted with energy-efficient filtration and heating systems, and low-chemical water treatment options are explored wherever possible. Even lush-looking lawns are chosen with water-saving in mind. It’s smart, long-term thinking which is great news for homeowners, and even better for the planet.
Casa Jaguar: A case study
One of Kew’s most striking recent projects, Casa Jaguar sits on a dramatic 65% sloped plot in a private Marbella community. Constructed by Atlas Group, the villa is a masterclass in minimalism and environmental integration that has already been featured in the design pages of El Pais.
Kew’s role was to bring the surrounding landscape into harmony with this bold architectural vision. Working closely with the building team, they created a tiered garden system using native plants, and installed a sleek
pool area that feels as natural as the hillside it sits on. The result is seamless, modern, and completely serene.
As owner, Ace Korckhi, shared in El País, “This property is not just a home; it’s a blend of sophisticated living and environmental consciousness.”
Designed to be lived in
What sets Kew apart is its sensitivity, not just to the land, but to the way people live. Their outdoor spaces are created to be used and loved whether it’s a courtyard retreat, a fully equipped summer kitchen, or a wellness terrace complete with sauna and spa. Privacy and elegance go hand-in-hand here. With a team that includes landscape architects, engineers, and artisans, every detail is handled with care and quiet confidence.
As more homeowners prioritise nature, wellness, and sustainability, Kew Gardens and Pools is proud to be part of that shift, helping define what modern Mediterranean outdoor living can, and should, look like.

CHEF HELLE OF CHILI GOURMET CATERING RECREATES
GAMBAS PIL PIL FIDEUÀ “PAELLA”
We are totally addicted to gambas pil pil and have been serving up our popular spicy version at catering events over the past 15 years. Our newest invention is a delicious version of our pasta fideo paella, upgraded with a splash of cava and our lovely gambas pil pil.
INGREDIENTS (serves six)
Dry chilli spices
100 ml piri piri chilli flakes
100 ml cayenne pepper
50 ml Tajin lime-chilli spices
100 ml paprika powder
2 tablespoons of garlic powder
1 teaspoon of ginger powder
1 tablespoon of sea salt
1 tablespoon of pepper
Fideuà
600g small pasta fideos (1 cm long)
1½ litres of Fumet (reduced shellfish cooking stock)
1200 g defrosted peeled big gambas
600 g clams
400 g sliced tomatoes
2 tablespoons tomato purée
10 garlic cloves (sliced)
10 shallots (sliced)
500 g green peppers
500 g red bell peppers
1 fresh red chilli (sliced)
400 ml virgin olive oil
200 ml cava or white wine
1 teaspoon saffron leaves
1½ tablespoons dry chilli spices
Extra salt and pepper to taste
Gambas Pil Pil
800 g raw hand peeled large prawns
500 g cherry tomatoes
2 heads of garlic (sliced)
200 ml virgin olive oil
200 ml cava or white wine
1-2 fresh red chilli (sliced)
1 ½ tablespoon dry chili spices
Salt and pepper to taste
A handful of chopped fresh parsley
Decoration
Pre-boiled whole large prawns
Lemon cut in wedges
2 marinated red peppers (sliced)
Fried threads of chilli (if possible)
1. Mix all the dry spices together and save for later. This portion makes enough for many more future recipes.
2. Fry the fideo pasta over a medium heat in a little olive oil until golden and save them for later. Frying adds flavour and stops them from breaking in the cooking process.
3. Fry all the vegetables in olive oil in a large paella pan for about five minutes until tender and crisp. Add the spices, tomato purée and stir. Turn up the heat and add the prawns and clams. Cook for two minutes, add the cava and bring to the boil to reduce. Add half of the cooking stock and all the fideos. Slowly add more stock and cook at medium heat until the pasta is al dente.
4. Make the gambas pil pil in a separate pan by frying the garlic, cherry tomatoes and spices for a couple
of minutes. Then, on a high heat, add the prawns and fresh chilli slices. Add the cava and reduce by a quarter. Top with half the parsley and it’s ready to pour over the middle of the finished fideuà.
5. Decorate with pre-boiled prawns, the marinated red peppers, parsley, lemon wedges and fried chilli threads.
If you want to cook like a pro, cover the fideuà pan with a lid for the last three minutes and the fideo pasta will rise to stand vertical. For a more indulgent option, you can upgrade this Pil Pil fideuà with panfried octopus.
For stress-free dining, Chili Gourmet Catering by Helle Barlebo can do the cooking for you. Call Helle on (+34) 666 627 105, or email her at helle@chiligourmet.es. Visit her website: www.chiligourmet.es.
INSIDE THE WORLD OF WHITE BURGUNDY WINES
BY NICOLAS WINE MERCHANT
When it comes to white wine at its finest, all roads lead to Burgundy. This charming little pocket of eastern France has earned its reputation as the heartland of Chardonnay, not just for what’s in the glass but for where it comes from. In Burgundy, it’s the land, the light, and the generations of winemaking know-how that make each bottle something truly special.
The Magic of Terroir
White Burgundy is all about terroir, a French word that sums up the magic that happens when soil, climate, and human care all come together. Burgundy isn’t just one big wine region; it’s a patchwork of vineyards stretching from cool, crisp Chablis in the north to the sun-soaked Mâconnais in the south.
Burgundy’s ancient limestone soils, once the floor of a prehistoric sea, give the wines their trademark freshness and subtle, stony minerality. Even the smallest changes in slope or sunlight can make a big difference in the bottle. That’s why locals have spent centuries mapping out over 600 distinct vineyard plots, known as climats, each with its own personality. In Burgundy, Chardonnay is all about showing off where it comes from and you’ll taste the difference from place to place. Oak is used with a light touch, just enough to enhance and not overpower. Many top domaines
ferment with indigenous yeasts and avoid heavy manipulation, allowing the vineyard to speak for itself.
A Tour of White Burgundy
Burgundy white wines pack in personality. Here’s a guide to the key spots and what to expect in your glass.
Chablis Cool and crisp with a signature salty tang
Côte de Beaune White Burgundy’s beating heart
Meursault Rich and rounded, with hazelnut and ripe peach
Puligny-Montrachet Graceful, floral and elegant
Chassagne-Montrachet Slightly bolder, often with a flinty twist
Mâconnais Sun-drenched, fruit-forward wines at good value. Look for Pouilly-Fuissé and Saint-Véran
Nicolas wine shop stocks a handpicked selection of Burgundy wines that ranges from well-known names to delightful hidden gems. Whether you’re just dipping your toes into the region or already know your Puligny from your Pouilly, the team is on hand to help you find something special. Visit one of their stores in Guadalmina (Centro Comercial Guadalmina), Elviria (Centro Comercial Contur), or Aloha Gardens (Plaza Aloha), or browse online at www.nicolasmarbella.com.

HACIENDA SON ANTEM GOLF RESORT
Sometimes, the most restorative getaways aren’t about going far but about stepping into a different rhythm. Mallorca, known as La Isla de la Calma, is exactly that. Just an hour’s flight from Málaga and a short drive through the peaceful Llucmajor countryside, Hacienda Son Antem Golf Resort offers the kind of Mediterranean retreat that makes slowing down feel like a luxury in itself. Part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, the resort strikes a balance between discreet elegance and high-end amenities. With 151 spacious rooms and suites, a full-service wellness centre, and two standout restaurants, Son Antem is a considered choice for a couple’s break, a solo recharge or even a longer family stay.
Days here are shaped by choice, not schedule, with breakfast taken on a private terrace or a session in the light-filled gym overlooking the gardens. The spa, with its thermal waters, sauna, and hammam, becomes a favourite stop for many, while the poolside offers its own quiet rhythm of reading, dipping, and doing absolutely nothing.
Dining at Son Antem is rooted in local flavour. At Es Camp and seasonal Es Peixet, the emphasis is on freshness and simplicity, with ingredients sourced locally and plates designed to be savoured. Long lunches can stretch into the afternoon, often enjoyed under shaded pergolas with a glass of Mallorcan rosé in hand.
For those who just can’t resist an active pace, the resort delivers. Two 18-hole golf courses are within walking distance, alongside tennis courts, a volleyball pitch, and personal training sessions on offer. Everything here is designed to feel effortless. Service is warm, surroundings are beautifully maintained, and while there’s plenty to do, the invitation to pause is always present. Close enough for a weekend reset, luxurious enough to stay longer, Hacienda Son Antem is unshowy, elegant, and built to encourage downtime. It’s a gentle reminder that a state of calm is always within reach.

COSTA DEL GOLF
WHY YOU SHOULD PLAY AT SANTANA GOLF CLUB
BY DR GARRY HENDERSON
The International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) has yet again named the Costa del Sol as the best golf destination in Europe. Thanks to the consistently comfortable climate, southern Spain attracts golfers 12 months of the year. In this edition I will review one of my favourite tracks that you should definitely explore, Santana Golf Club.
Located in Mijas, a short drive north of the A-7, Santana Golf is a jewel in the Coast’s crown. In 2002 the finca, which is now the golf course, was one of Europe’s largest avocado plantations. It attracted the vision of two Irish businessmen who engaged renowned golf architect Cabell B. Robinson to design and build this world class course.
Born in Washington DC in 1941, Cabell B. Robinson studied landscape architecture at Harvard University where he became close friends with Rees Jones, the son of legendary Robert Trent Jones. On graduating from Berkeley, he worked full-time with Trent Jones and became influential in shaping some of the most renowned courses in America. During the ‘70s, he set up an office in Europe and established his own design legacy with projects along the Costa del Sol and the south of France.
The landscape at Santana Golf Club is adorned with avocado, eucalyptus, orange, and lemon trees. Along the fifth hole are cork oaks which have been
standing for over 500 years. The par 72 course, measuring 6,200 metres, has generously wide fairways (even I can hit them) but it is not a pushover with many well placed bunkers and several water hazards. As the course is essentially flat it is very walkable, unlike many of the courses around here. The eighth hole at 602 metres is the longest par five on the Costa del Sol, while the 17th hole, a sharp dogleg, requires a well-placed tee shot. Don’t be disheartened if you do push your tee shot into the copse. That’s where you’ll find ripe avocados in the lower branches or even on the ground. I picked up four following my deliberately sliced drive. The 18th hole has a lake on the right and an elevated, tough to hit green. It is ranked the second hardest on the course. A unique feature on this hole and something that is shared by several courses here is that the flag is in fact Spain’s national flag. If you wonder about the stand attached to the flagpole, there is a reason for this. In Spain it is an offence to lay the Spanish flag on the ground. It would certainly ruin a day’s golf to birdie 18 and then be arrested by the Guardia Civil.
With its thoughtfully designed layout, scenic setting, and a touch of history in every fairway, Santana is a course that rewards precision and tempts you back for another round.
MATTERS OF THE HEART CARDIOVASCULAR EXERCISE AND THE MENOPAUSE
BY RACHEL GARROD
With menopause comes a decline in ovarian activity and reduction in oestrogen. Many studies have shown increases in the bad levels of cholesterol, increased arterial stiffness, systemic inflammation, and reductions in beneficial nitric oxide after the menopause. These bio markers tell us that there is an increased risk of cardiovascular and cerebral events such as stroke or heart attack.
Whilst hormone replacement therapy (HRT) most definitely mitigates these effects, exercise is also effective, and the exercise that is most beneficial for heart health is aerobic exercise. This means activities that get us a little out of breath such as fast walking, jogging, cycling, or brief bouts of stair climbing. They all elevate heart rate and increase oxygen consumption and the release of nitric oxide.
But knowing what to do and for how long is not always clear. Post menopause, women also need to consider increased levels of cortisol, and joint aches and pains. Studies conclusively show that at least 150 minutes (two and a half hours) per week of aerobic exercise leads to significant reductions in many of the biomarkers mentioned above. One review article revealed significant reductions in arterial stiffness in post-menopausal women who undertook
aerobic exercise of between 20 to 90 minutes, three times a week, for at least 12 weeks (Ferreria et al, 2024).
For those of us struggling with menopausal belly fat, another study showed that high intensity interval training (HIIT) may be more effective at losing visceral fat than a lower intensity approach (Dupuit et al, 2020). Simply put, this means adding in bouts of high intensity exercise to a low intensity routine. So, in practical terms, if you are taking a walk for your health, try adding in one-minute intervals of fast paced walking. If on a treadmill, you could add an incline for 30 seconds or one minute. The high intensity intervals should be hard enough to make you feel too breathless to talk and raise your heartrate above 100 but brief enough to allow you to continue with the lower intensity activity. Aim for a total time of 30 to 40 minutes with high intensity bouts every two or three minutes and hopefully that belly fat will melt away!
If you want help getting started with a high intensity interval training programme or just to be more active, please get in touch with Rachel at Better Breathing Physio. Email. rachelgarrod1@gmail.com, Tel. (+34) 699 501 190, Web. www.betterbreathingphysio.com

LIVING IN SPAIN
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR TAX OBLIGATIONS
Moving to Spain promises sunshine, sangria, and a slower pace of life but it also comes with tax responsibilities that can’t be overlooked.
If you spend more than 183 days a year in Spain or if your main economic interests or immediate family are based here, you’re most likely considered a tax resident. That means you’re obliged to file a Personal Income Tax return (known as IRPF) on your worldwide income, not just what you earn in Spain. You may also be subject to Wealth Tax and the Solidarity Tax on Large Fortunes, depending on the value of your global assets. But there’s good news if you’ve already paid tax on foreign income. Spain’s network of Double Taxation Treaties often allows you to offset it, avoiding being taxed twice. If you spend fewer than 183 days in Spain, you’ll fall into the “non-resident” category and will typically only need to file Form 210 (Non-Resident Income Tax) on income earned in Spain.
Understanding the nuances of Spanish tax law such as which country has the right to tax what income, can be complex. For example, salaries and rental income are taxed differently from dividends and capital gains, and each has its own rate structure.
That’s where expert help makes all the difference. At Welex, our multilingual team specialises in guiding international residents through Spain’s tax system with clarity and confidence. From annual filings to strategic advice, we’re here to ensure you meet your obligations with ease. Get in touch for personalised advice.
