LIFESTYLE & LEISURE
EDITOR’S NOTE
We’re calling it: Stripes, strong colour, and a touch of modern organised maximalism are back. We can’t read an interior design feature these days, or step inside an interior design store, without seeing a standout piece in bold patterns and confident hues. Whilst we’re still very much loving the neutral, multi-textural approach to interior design and it’s not going anywhere soon, a sense of boldness is most definitely making a return to our homes, as well as the pages of this issue of Home & Lifestyle Magazine.
If, like me, you’re up for playing around with your home decor by adding more layers, stripes are the way to do it. They bring instant structure, especially when layered over a calm, neutral base and you could try incorporating them in rugs, cushions, or even a bold outdoor fabric to lift a terrace. Start small and let the pattern echo through a few well-chosen details. It will surprise you how transformative it feels. The same goes for colour. Earthy ochres, soft pinks and baked reds offer warmth, while a bright flash of yellow or a lush green is impactful next to a softer palette. This new wave of maximalism proves it’s less about excess and more about layering textures and colour to create richness and warmth. Expect to see more of these popping up in the most stylish places soon.
No surprise, then, that these trends will be showing up on the international stages of Feria Hábitat València in September too. Running from 29th September to 2nd October, the event is Spain’s leading design fair and one of the most important in Europe, and, once again, we are delighted to be an official media sponsor. We will, of course, be bringing you highlights of the innovations and trends setting the tone for the seasons ahead in our winter issue.
In other news, the eagle-eyed may have noticed that this issue is a special one for us. It is, in fact, the 100th issue of Home & Lifestyle Magazine. It’s a milestone that reflects not just years in print, but the incredible community of readers, designers, craftsmen, and business owners we are lucky enough to have around us. Thanks for choosing us as your trusted design magazine. We couldn’t do it without you.
Here’s to great design, and to the next 100 issues together.

OUTDOOR LIVING INSPIRATION
Step outside and you’ll find that the garden has become more than just a backdrop – it’s an extension of the home, a space for style, comfort, and connection. Natural materials and earthy tones remain timeless favourites but, this season, they’re joined by bolder splashes of colour and playful patterns, with stripes becoming more prominent in many new collections. Gathering around a dining table out in the fresh air is a scene that, in southern Europe, can be enjoyed almost year-round so good quality dining sets will stand the test of time when carefully considered. The increased popularity in outdoor kitchens is redefining mealtimes, bringing the cook into the heart of the action, instead of being tucked away inside slaving over the kitchen stove. And with the sun’s intensity on the rise, thoughtful shade solutions are no longer a luxury but a necessity, offering protection and comfort in equal measure. From parasols, awnings to pergolas, a well-thought-out shade solution is transformational when it comes to how you enjoy your outside space. Whether it’s hosting friends or enjoying quiet family moments, today’s outdoor living is all about making the most of every ray, every breeze, and every shared moment under the sky.
These Tribù collections span beautifully across furniture and lighting. From Suro’s tactile seating and Pure’s elegant minimalism, to Mai’s natural textures, Tairu’s artisanal finesse, and Luna’s enchanting lighting. BRIGHT IDEAS IN LIGHTING
Lighting is the silent architect of mood, atmosphere, and spatial character. While grand, ornate fixtures often command attention, minimalistic designs can wield an equally powerful presence, their elegance lying in restraint, texture, and form. By layering light at varying heights and creating intimate pockets of illumination, every space can be transformed into a haven of warmth and quiet drama. Some lamps transcend their role entirely, serving as artful objects even when unlit.
Opting for different genres of lighting serves a living space better both practically and aesthetically. Pendants can provide direct task lighting or a soft, ambient glow, essential for enhancing the atmosphere of any interior. Portable lamps bring unparalleled flexibility to sculpt light around the home exactly where it’s needed, whether for a quiet corner, a dining nook, or an impromptu workspace. Wall lighting casts subtle washes of illumination that define surfaces, create depth, and enhance architectural features. Floor lamps are versatile additions to any interior, offering focused light for reading or a gentle, ambient glow to enhance the overall atmosphere. They can be strikingly sculptural and act as decorative statements that elevate a room’s aesthetic, or they can be elegantly minimal and prioritise function while blending seamlessly into the space. Their presence adds both practicality and style, making them an essential element in layered lighting design. Take a look at these illuminating ideas…

WALL POWER
Walls have become a powerful design statement and a key element in shaping the soul of a room. Today’s wall treatments invite us to be bold, expressive, and deeply personal, whether through dramatic wallpaper patterns in rich, earthy tones or soft, tranquil neutrals that echo the calm of the natural world. Colour drenching - where walls, trim, and even ceilings are painted in a single, saturated hue - creates an immersive experience that stirs emotion the moment you step inside. Meanwhile, wall panels and tiles introduce texture, structure, and architectural flair, adding depth and interest to flat surfaces. Whether you’re embracing moody sophistication or chasing light and freshness, the way you dress your walls can completely transform the look, feel, and atmosphere of your space.

A BEDROOM OF YOUR DREAMS
The bedroom has always been more than just a place to rest; it is a personal retreat where comfort meets style. In recent years, designers have been reimagining this intimate environment with layers of luxury, from plush upholstered headboards to sumptuous bedding that invites you to sink in and unwind. Fabrics play a starring role in this transformation. From velvets, silks, textured weaves to boho linens, materials create a tactile richness that instantly elevates the atmosphere. While soft neutrals have long been favoured for their calming and restorative qualities, there is a growing appetite for bolder design statements. Deep jewel tones, rich earthy hues, and elegant patterns are finding their way into the bedroom, adding drama and a sense of individuality. This shift brings with it a more curated and considered aesthetic, one that feels both contemporary and timeless. Of course, no bedroom, however beautiful, can be complete without the right foundation. The mattress remains central to the quality of your sleep and overall well-being. Investing in a model that supports your individual needs is not only wise but essential. A bed that feels as good as it looks ensures that the design choices extend beyond aesthetics into genuine daily comfort. As we move into the autumn and winter months, the call to cosy up becomes irresistible. It is the season to embrace warmth, texture, and layers, creating a sanctuary that comforts the body, delights the senses, and provides the perfect backdrop for rest and relaxation.

The Costa del Sol had been a frequent holiday destination for the family and, over time, they noticed something missing. “There is a wealth of highend retailers here,” they explain, “but not many offering high-quality furniture at mid-range prices. We knew we could bring stylish, well-crafted pieces to the market without the luxury price tag.” Indeed, a walk through their spacious showroom reveals designs echoing those of premium brands, at more attainable prices.
Space to Experience
Choosing a large showroom was no accident. “We wanted our customers to see, touch, and truly experience the furniture,” says Dainius. “Buying a sofa is a significant investment and comfort is as important as design. You need to sit, feel, and be sure of your purchase.”
More Than Sofas
Veneks Boutique offers a complete home furnishing solution. Alongside sofas and armchairs, the showroom features dining sets, lighting, accessories, rugs, and wallpapers. Their carefully curated brand portfolio includes companies from Italy, Belgium, Denmark, The Netherlands, and Poland. They have chosen designers prized for craftsmanship and style who are still relatively unknown to the wider market. “Even though we consider our own tastes to be classic/contemporary, we like to present a mix of genres in our showroom,” adds Dovilė. “From classic Chesterfields to contemporary modular seating, we have furniture in stock to suit every style of home.”

Design Expertise
Veneks Boutique is more than a retailer - it is a design partner. With ample stock on hand, they can fully furnish a home with impressive speed. “We follow the latest trends in style and functionality, always with a close eye on value,” says Dainius. “Our aim is always to provide exceptional quality without excess cost.”
Personal Favourites
When asked to choose a few favourites from the collection, the couple smiles. “It’s hard; every piece here is personally selected.” Yet a few items stand out: a reclining armchair with a discreet, rechargeable battery, freeing it from the constraints of wall sockets; and the sofas from Atelier Nieri, whose modular elegance makes them timeless and adaptable.
Looking Ahead
The future is already taking shape. Outdoor furniture will soon join the collection to fully embrace the southern Spanish lifestyle. Plans are also underway to enter the high-end market with a separate showroom dedicated to exclusive pieces. “We will always keep this space we have now for our mid-range collections,” says Dovilė, “but we’re ready to offer something extra for those seeking the very finest.” With a keen eye for quality, an instinct for market needs, and a shared passion for beautiful design, Veneks Boutique is set to become a distinctive name on the Costa del Sol furniture scene, where Baltic vision meets Mediterranean lifestyle.
Veneks Boutique is located on Calle Santa María 10, San Pedro de Alcántara 29670. Visit their website at www.veneksboutique.es.
FULL OF SCANDINAVIAN SOUL
AN INTERVIEW WITH BIRGITTE MORGAN, SLETTVOLL MARBELLA
Furnishing a home is about creating a space that feels like you. And Scandinavian interiors brand Slettvoll has been helping its customers to create calm, cohesive, and deeply personal spaces for more than 70 years.
With a new showroom in Marbella, Slettvoll is bringing its signature blend of Nordic craftsmanship and timeless design to the Costa del Sol, offering a complete interior design service and carefully curated collections for both indoor and outdoor living.
In this interview, Birgitte Morgan shares how Slettvoll’s philosophy translates to life in Spain, and why the Marbella showroom is about helping people feel at home, wherever they are.
Can you explain how opening a showroom in Marbella aligns with Slettvoll’s values and identity?
Slettvoll has steadily grown into a leading name in Scandinavian furniture, with exports now accounting for 30 per cent of our total sales. Many of our customers own holiday homes in Spain, so opening a showroom here was a natural next step. It allows us to offer more personalised service and tailored interior solutions closer to where our clients live and holiday.
Scandinavian design continues to enjoy strong popularity across Europe, and we’re also seeing growing interest in our brand from a wider international audience. Marbella allows us to connect with both.
What is the essence of Slettvoll’s design philosophy, and how is that reflected in the Marbella showroom?
Slettvoll offers a complete, cohesive lifestyle concept, carefully curated to create harmonious interiors defined by quality, comfort, and timeless aesthetics. Inspired by nature, our materials and colour palettes reflect the calm, organic beauty of the Nordic landscape. This connection to nature is central to our design philosophy and enhances the sense of warmth and authenticity in every space. Our collections are designed to work seamlessly together, reflecting a commitment to timeless elegance that resonates with a mature, discerning clientele.
As a family-owned business, we also value craftsmanship and heritage. Each piece of furniture is custom-made by skilled craftsmen in Stranda (Norway), ensuring exceptional quality and a personal touch for every customer.
What sets Slettvoll apart from other luxury furniture brands?
Slettvoll brings a uniquely Norwegian take on Scandinavian design. It’s warmer, more classic, and deeply rooted in craftsmanship and comfort. We’re not a fast-moving consumer brand. Instead, we focus on timeless, handcrafted pieces that last for generations.
All of our furniture is made in Norway, giving us full control over the production process. That’s rare in today’s market and allows us to maintain the highest standards of quality and sustainability.
We also offer a complimentary interior design service, helping clients furnish and style their entire home, whether in person at our Marbella showroom, during a home visit, or online. This flexibility, combined with our dedication to detail, is something our customers really value.
How do you ensure craftsmanship and quality are maintained across international locations?
Maintaining our standards is absolutely fundamental to Slettvoll, no matter the location. Because all of our furniture is still produced in Norway, we retain full control over materials, production, and finish. This ensures consistent quality and sustainable practices across the board.
We also work closely with our international teams, investing in training to ensure they deliver the same level of service our customers expect. Our Marbella showroom is staffed by interior experts who understand our values and design philosophy, and who bring a high level of personal service to every client interaction.
This balance of centralised production and localised service makes Slettvoll unique in the global market.
How important is sustainability in your production and material sourcing?
Sustainability is woven into everything we do. We produce all our furniture
in Norway, and our company and factory are certified according to the Norwegian Lighthouse standards, reflecting our commitment to responsible production and environmental impact.
We carefully select our materials and fabrics for durability and sustainability, and we focus on creating timeless designs that last for generations, not just seasons. For us, sustainability is a principle.
What kind of experience can visitors expect when they walk into the Marbella showroom?
Our Marbella showroom is designed to reflect Slettvoll’s philosophy of harmony, warmth, and timeless style. Visitors are welcomed into thoughtfully curated living areas that bring our collections to life, showing how furniture, lighting, textiles, and accessories can work together. Given our Mediterranean setting, our outdoor collection plays a key role. Two open terraces allow clients to view furniture pieces in a natural environment. We want every visitor to feel inspired and relaxed. The showroom is a space to imagine what home can feel like with the guidance of our experienced interior team.

ELEVATING SPANISH DESIGN
CELEBRATING MORE THAN 40 YEARS OF GUADALMANSA
Located in Estepona, Guadalmansa is a family-run construction and materials company that has been serving the Costa del Sol for over 40 years. With two expansive showrooms featuring a 2,100 m2 exhibition space and a 15,000 m2 warehouse, it has become a go-to destination for everything needed to bring a construction or renovation project to life, and to the highest standard.
From luxury porcelain and handcrafted tiles to kitchen furniture, sanitary ware, and bespoke interior design solutions, Guadalmansa has built a reputation as one of the region’s most trusted names in the industry. Whether you’re a homeowner transforming your space into a serene sanctuary or a builder sourcing high-performance materials, the showroom offers inspiration and hands-on support from a passionate, knowledgeable team.
We go behind the scenes and catch up with Guadalmansa’s managing director to find out more about the business, and their commitment to providing top-class, personal service to a wide and loyal client base.
First of all, tell us about a memorable renovation project you helped with?
There are so many but one that stands out just now is a luxury villa in El Paraíso. The client had worked with us before to renovate a beachfront three-bedroom apartment and returned to work with us on this larger project. They selected large format porcelain for exterior and interior flooring, a
mosaic and border for the pool, and coordinated interior floor tiles to match the outdoor tones and format. They wanted six distinctly styled bathrooms, each different in look but cohesive in colour palette - complete with faucets, shower trays, screens, bathtubs, suspended toilets, bathroom furniture, and mirrors. We also supplied kitchen tiling, countertops, and custom cabinetry. Balancing uniqueness and harmony across all elements was a huge creative challenge but the result is a stunning home. Today, that client feels more like a friend.
What type of client normally walks through the doors at Guadalmansa?
We welcome a broad and varied clientele - homeowners planning renovations or new builds, reform specialists, small and national construction firms, real estate agencies, architects, and interior designers. Many collaborate with us regularly, working as part of an integrated team to plan, select, and deliver outstanding projects.
So, Guadalmansa also assists with project planning?
Definitely. While we supply materials, we equally serve as creative advisors. Every day we have satisfied clients who we have helped choose the ideal finishes and styles for their project. We support them in envisioning the end result and then making sure the material choices align with aesthetic and practical goals.
What’s the most rewarding part of guiding someone from the initial plan to a completed renovation?
It’s always a joy when clients return to tell us how thrilled they are with the final result. Many come back years later with a new project, and some even bring the next generation. We’ve had clients who first renovated with us 30 years ago and now return with their children. That kind of longterm trust is incredibly rewarding.
So, you’re all about a personal service. How do you ensure clients feel supported, especially those unfamiliar with construction materials? We treat our clients like family. Our team includes trained professionals, each of them an expert in their field like ceramics, bathrooms, kitchens, or construction materials. With more than four decades of experience, we’re motivated to help de-mystify technical concerns and guide clients thoughtfully through every decision.
And how do you help clients to navigate the world of tiles and ceramics? Many clients underestimate how important things like material composition, durability, resistance, and maintenance are when choosing tiles. We take the time to explain those aspects clearly. Clients are often surprised to learn that tiles come directly from factories - usually in Castellón or Italy - and that there’s a standard two-week lead time. We make sure they understand both the performance and logistics before making a decision.
Finally, are there any interior design or construction trends you’re excited about right now?
I’m particularly enthusiastic about neutral-coloured, large format porcelain that imitates marble or stone. Whether matte with engraved veins, or polished, this trend reflects a refined natural aesthetic. It’s about connecting spaces with noble materials in a subtle, luxurious way.

IDEAL FURNITURE
THE LARGEST FURNITURE SHOWROOM IN MARBELLA OFFERING STYLE AND CRAFTSMANSHIP
Standing proudly in the vibrant heart of Marbella on Avenida Ricardo Soriano, Ideal Furniture represents style, craftsmanship, and good value, and it now boasts the largest furniture showroom in Marbella spanning over 2000 squared-metres. Owned and operated by Nesh, a seasoned figure on the Costa del Sol design scene, Ideal Furniture has earned a reputation not only for its expansive showroom but for something far rarer in today’s market; its very own workshop, located in nearby Nueva Andalucía. What sets Ideal Furniture apart is the depth of their offering. While many showrooms rely heavily on external suppliers, Nesh has taken a different route, with a team of skilled artisans upholstering, carving, and constructing tailor-made furniture pieces to offer clients a made-to-measure service that is reassuringly affordable, thanks to the fact that everything is carried out in-house. This hands-on control means custom pieces are crafted
with precision and turned around faster than traditional manufacturers. Whether it’s a bed designed to fit an awkward space, a one-of-a-kind dining table, or a sofa in the perfect fabric and dimension, Ideal Furniture delivers creativity and practicality.
Beds have become one of Ideal Furniture’s standout products; beautifully upholstered, solidly built, and incredibly customisable. But the offerings go far beyond the bedroom. The showroom and workshop cater to every room in the home, from sleek dining solutions and timeless lounge sets to an expansive collection of outdoor furniture, ideal for the Costa del Sol lifestyle. There are also accessories, mirrors, lighting, and art pieces to transform a house into a home. With thousands of items in stock, Ideal Furniture’s showroom offers immediate solutions, but for those with specific requirements, the in-house workshop is there to serve.

Nesh’s passion for quality and perfect finishing touches is visible in every piece. Having travelled extensively to source the right materials and partners, he has built a collection that balances style, durability, and value. He believes that great furniture should not only look good but feel right, stand the test of time, and be accessible without compromising on the finish.
His meticulous eye for detail ensures that the workshop team works to a standard rarely found outside high-end, bespoke studios, and it’s this very ethos that has earned Ideal Furniture a loyal following of returning customers.
Over the years, Ideal Furniture has become a go-to name for residents and interior designers looking for off-the-shelf convenience and tailored solutions. Whether you’re furnishing a new home, refreshing a space, or starting with a single custom piece, Nesh and his team provide a level of service and flexibility that’s hard to match. And if you can’t find exactly what you are looking for in their enormous showroom filled with inspirational design pieces, they’ll make it for you… quickly, beautifully, and affordably.
REDEFINING LUXURY LIVING IN MARBELLA WITH AN AWARD-WINNING CONSTRUCTION TEAM
The story of this prize-winning project begins with a family’s need for more living space. The client, who previously owned a residence in the Puente Romano, approached Space & Grace to discuss a potential reform. Seeking a more expansive home, he purchased two partially renovated houses within the Oasis urbanisation on Marbella’s Golden Mile.
With two front doors and two staircases, the challenge was to unify the properties into a single, harmonious villa with a natural flow throughout. Achieving this without creating a disjointed layout required careful architectural rethinking.
The original exterior architecture featured elegant arched window surrounds, inspiring Space & Grace to echo this language of curves within the interior. Softly rounded walls were designed to integrate structural steel pillars seamlessly, while curved hallways added a gentle, flowing aesthetic. Niches with subtle lighting were incorporated into the bathrooms, and micro-cement was applied throughout, covering walls, shower trays, and even the TV wall unit which features a base of Spanish travertine stone. Travertine and warm oak are present throughout the home, creating a consistent material palette.
The villa comprises five bedrooms and five bathrooms, plus a utility room and cloakroom, arranged over two floors, with an expansive 90m2 rooftop terrace with micro-pebble flooring, stunning open sea views, complete with a louvred pergola, outdoor kitchen, and bar - designed for year-round Mediterranean living.
From the heart of Marbella’s Golden Mile, Space & Grace has spent over two decades mastering the art of transformation. This multi-award-winning renovation and interior design studio is renowned for delivering bespoke, high-end projects - many within the prestigious Puente Romano Resortthat balance individuality with timeless elegance.
Specialising in turnkey solutions, the team guides clients from property acquisition through to final handover. Every element is handled in-house: planning, permissions, bespoke construction, detailed styling, and delivery - always on time, within budget, and expertly tailored to the client’s lifestyle. Their exceptional work has gained international acclaim, most recently with the Best Luxury Residential Renovation Project award for the Oasis Club, from Luxury Lifestyle Awards - their third consecutive win. This ambitious
commission involved transforming two neighbouring 1960s homes into one striking villa, overcoming fragile foundations, unsupported structures, and unstable roofing. Reinforced from the ground up, the property now combines contemporary design, advanced sustainability measures, and extraordinary hand-finished details.
At the helm is founder Emma Surgenor, joined by her husband, Peter Mackin Rennie. Their refreshingly direct and personal approach begins with in-depth consultations to align dreams, needs, and vision. Clients are then invited on private tours of past and ongoing projects, offering rare insight into the creative process and building trust from the very first meeting.
Sustainability is central to the company’s ethos. In line with Spain’s focus on improving energy efficiency, Space & Grace ensures every property meets or exceeds u-value standards, with insulation to floors, walls, and ceilings.
The team also champions the creative reuse of furniture, transforming preloved pieces into unique, character-filled features.
Luxury is never about fleeting trends or excess for this husband-andwife team. It is defined by thoughtful living, authenticity, and enduring craftsmanship - a philosophy that positions them at the forefront of Europe’s high-end property transformation sector.
Space & Grace, Co Creating With You SL is a licensed construction company, promoter and real estate agency. This stunning property is available for short and long-term rental.

Once again, Home & Lifestyle Magazine are proud media sponsors of this year’s edition and we’re delighted to be part of a platform that celebrates the world of design. Here are some of the highlights of this year’s show.
A Global Stage for Design
Running alongside Textilhogar, Spain’s premier home textiles fair, Hábitat offers an unparalleled window into the international design landscape. It is where global brands and Spanish design houses share the stage, showcasing bold new product launches, timeless pieces that honour tradition, and everything in between. The scale and diversity of the exhibition will equally spark the imagination of professionals sourcing for projects, buyers spotting the next big trend, or, simply, design enthusiasts. Hosting a full and varied agenda of conferences, presentations, and networking opportunities you can expect conversations to explore sustainability, technology, and the evolving role of design in our lives.

It highlights Hábitat’s commitment to engaging a connected, visually driven professional community and amplifying the impact of the event far beyond Valencia.
Spotlight on TempoCraft: The Art of Time
This year’s programme debuts TempoCraft, a new fair dedicated to contemporary craftsmanship. Curated by Ramón Vergara of the Asociación Contemporánea de Artes y Oficios, and supported by the Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship, it brings together 30 artisans from across Spain.
Disciplines range from ceramics and glass to wood, fibre, and experimental materials, and each maker has been selected for technical excellence,
creativity, and vision. The theme at its core is the value of time. In an industry often focused on speed, TempoCraft reflects and appreciates the slow beauty of handcrafted design. The exhibition aspires to place Spanish craftsmanship on the same stage as other leading European showcases such as Collect in London, Révélations in Paris, and Homo Faber in Venice.
Alberto Cavalli, executive director of the Michelangelo Foundation, will attend the opening and take part in the Ágora nude, Hábitat’s dynamic forum for discussion and exchange.
Hábitat València is an environment where creativity thrives through thought-provoking conferences, curated exhibitions, and future collaborations. For professionals, it is an unmissable opportunity to connect with peers and engage in conversations that will influence the direction of the design world in the years to come. Expect to leave inspired.

BORDEAUX
A TALE OF TWO BANKS (AND WHAT LIES BETWEEN)
BY NICOLAS WINE MERCHANT
Few names in the wine world shine as brightly as Bordeaux. Famous for elegance and tradition, Bordeaux wines are loved across the globe, and what makes them truly special is the natural divide created by the Garonne and Dordogne rivers; the Right Bank and the Left Bank. Each has its own style and character, and its own treasures waiting to be discovered.
Merlot is king on the Right Bank where clay and limestone soils dominate. These wines are smooth, velvety, and generous, with flavours of ripe plums and cherries. The appellations here are legendary: Saint-Émilion, with its elegant, structured reds, and Pomerol, home to some of the most soughtafter wines in the world. If you enjoy approachable, fruit-driven wines with soft tannins, the Right Bank will win your heart.
Across the river lies the Left Bank; its gravel soils perfect for Cabernet Sauvignon. These wines are bold, structured, and built to age, offering notes of blackcurrant, cedar, and spice. The names here are iconic: Margaux, Pauillac, Saint-Julien, and the Médoc, producing some of the most prestigious wines on earth.
But Bordeaux is not only about reds. Between the two rivers lies Entre-DeuxMers, celebrated for its vibrant dry white wines. Made from Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle, they are crisp and aromatic, with citrus and floral notes, and are the perfect pairing with seafood or as a refreshing aperitif. What ties it all together is Bordeaux’s unique terroir. The rivers and the Atlantic Ocean create a mild climate, while diverse soils give each wine its distinctive personality. This harmony of nature and tradition is what makes Bordeaux a benchmark for wine lovers everywhere. Whether your taste leans toward the silky charm of the Right Bank, the structured elegance of the Left Bank, or the refreshing whites of EntreDeux-Mers, Bordeaux has something for every palate.
There is a wide selection of Bordeaux wines available at Nicolas wine merchant. Visit their stores in Guadalmina (Centro Comercial Guadalmina), Elviria (Centro Comercial Contur), or Aloha Gardens (Plaza Aloha), or browse online at www.nicolasmarbella.com.
SUMMER LIVING
VALDERRAMA HOSTS LIV ANDALUCÍA
BY DR GARRY HENDERSON
In mid July Valderrama golf club hosted LIV Golf Andalucía for the third year in a row and this year lived up to expectations.
For those of you unfamiliar with LIV Golf, it is a breakaway tour which “recruited” top stars from the PGA and DP World tours, paying vast sums of money to the players who would switch their allegiance to LIV Golf. Now in its third year, the name LIV is derived from the Roman numerals L (50) and IV (4) and each event is played over 54 holes with no “cut”, unlike the 72 hole events on the PGA/DP World with a field reduced after two rounds. The tournament combines individual strokeplay scoring with a team competition, and employs a shotgun start, meaning all players begin their rounds simultaneously from different holes, giving constant action from the first tee shot. There are two prizes up for grabs; an individual prize and a team prize. The teams have catchy names like 4Aces with captain Dustin Johnson, Crushers with captain Bryson DeChambeau and Fireballs with captain Sergio García to name a few.
This time around the individual prize went to Talor Gooch, the winner here in 2023, who narrowly pipped a charging Jon Rahm who lost by one stroke despite shooting a fantastic six under par. The team event was won by Rahm’s team Legion XIII.
Attending a LIV event is markedly different to attending a PGA or DP World event. The overall aim is to create a party-like atmosphere with music playing all over the course, and food trucks and concerts after the final round.
Valderrama is one of golf’s most revered venues and Sergio García’s favourite, and Gooch’s win there reaffirmed his dominance in LIV Golf Andalucía. Those who attended this event I am sure were happy to see some of the best in the world fighting it out on what is Spain’s most famous course.
Early bird tickets for LIV Golf Andalucía 2026 are now available for purchase from www.livgolf.com/schedule/andalucia-2026
A LUXURIOUS AUTUMN ESCAPE TO ITALY
CHECKING INTO THE BELMOND HOTEL CIPRIANI, VENICE
With the Venice Film Festival just wrapped and the Biennale still pulling in the art and design crowd, early September is one of the best times to visit the enchanting city of Venice. The energy is still there but the heat has eased, and so have the crowds. If you want to experience Venice with a bit more breathing space, the Belmond Hotel Cipriani knows how to treat its guests and constantly earns its place on lists citing the best hotels in the world. This is understated Venetian luxury at its finest. Even the arrival feels indulgent. From the airport or St. Mark’s Square, guests are collected in a classically elegant, varnished wooden launch that glides across the lagoon to the hotel’s private jetty on Giudecca island. Unlike most of Venice’s five-star offerings, which are housed in grand old buildings, the Cipriani was purpose-built in 1958 by Giuseppe Cipriani, the man behind Harry’s Bar, on what was then private land owned by the Guinness family. That decision gave the hotel space to grow into something fabulous. There are three acres of manicured gardens, a vineyard, tennis courts, the Casanova Spa set amongst orange blossoms, and an Olympic-sized heated saltwater pool which still serves as the social heart of the hotel. This summer the hotel began unveiling a bold new look under the direction of New York architect Peter Marino. The first phase includes 13 newly designed suites, inspired by three eras: Old Venice, La Dolce Vita, and the present day. Expect a bold colour palette and luxury touches of Murano glass, polished
terrazzo, and bespoke Venetian fabrics. There’s a fresh sense of personality in each space, from the modernist flourishes in the lighting to the curated art and sculptural furniture. Rooms in the older part of the hotel remain more traditional with silk brocades, hand-painted headboards, and marble-clad bathrooms. Whatever your accommodation, they come with balconies or terraces that open out to lagoon views, the gardens, or the pool.
Food at the Cipriani is also a serious business. Oro, the Michelin-starred flagship restaurant led by chef Riccardo Canella, is all about high-end Venetian dining with a seasonal touch. Tasting menus change with the tides, literally, with ingredients pulled from the lagoon and the hotel’s own garden. For something more relaxed, Cip’s Club offers views to St. Mark’s Square, and serves cicchetti and classic pasta dishes in an alfresco setting that’s hard to beat. There’s also the poolside restaurant for lazy lunches and bellinis in the sun, and a small wine cellar curated with Northern Italian favourites.
The Belmond Hotel Cipriani doesn’t need to shout about itself. It offers that uniquely Venetian blend of elegance and oozes class. It’s easy to see why it’s known as one of Italy’s most iconic hotels; a place where service is effortless, luxury is never showy, and the atmosphere strikes the right balance between relaxed and the epitome of style.

CAN WALKING BACKWARDS REALLY BE BETTER FOR YOU THAN WALKING FORWARD?
BY RACHEL GARROD
Backward walking, also known as retro walking, is having a moment, stepping back into the wellness spotlight with surprising momentum. Once a regular feature of 19th-century Chinese exercise routines, this seemingly eccentric activity is now being re-examined by modern researchers who are uncovering a host of benefits that go well beyond novelty. What was once a curious ritual from the past is fast becoming a forward-thinking addition to today’s fitness regimes. When we walk backwards, biomechanical adjustments in muscle and joint activity mean that the pressure on our knees is reduced by up to 30 per cent. In backward walking we land toe-first and use our quadriceps muscle in a different way than when moving forwards. This results in reduced knee pressure and increased ankle and muscle activity, meaning that retro walking is ideal for arthritis, post-injury rehab and also back pain.
In my clinical experience I have seen big improvements in posture and stride length in forward walking after a period of only five to 10 minutes of backward walking. There is even evidence to suggest that backward running has a positive effect on the speed of forward sprints in athletic training. But let’s not run before we can walk…
Another benefit of backward walking is that it uses more energy and burns more calories than walking forwards. It has been claimed that 100 steps backwards are equivalent in energy to 1,000 forward steps so it is also a super-efficient workout. There is even some early evidence that retro walking might enhance short term memory. In one study, backward walkers performed better than regular walkers on a cognitive test. The authors speculated that the unfamiliar action stimulates the prefrontal cortex, sharpening reaction time and memory. To start your backward walking plan, choose somewhere flat and quiet, and start slow. If walking in the park, beach or garden, make sure you have someone there acting as your eyes. The treadmill is also an excellent opportunity to safely practice some backward walking. Simply turn around and face away from the console, hold on to the rails, and start by setting your speed very slow (perhaps 0.5 -1 km/hr) and give it a go. As you gain in confidence, you can increase the speed and even add an incline.
So, next time you head out for a walk, take a step back in time and try out some retro walking.

In the world of interior design, Heidi Gubbins communicates as she designs - guided by instinct, driven by curiosity, and unbound by convention. Led by the quiet question “What if?”, her process is organic, and unafraid to explore beyond the expected.
Her Instagram unfolds like a visual diary of textures, moods, and intimate behind-the-scenes glimpses. Her brand videos transcend the typical format, becoming immersive experiences that blur the boundary between presentation and storytelling.
Each project emerges with its own bespoke communication concept, echoing its design in a way that feels alive, personal, and unrepeatable. Nothing is borrowed or recycled because, for Heidi, communication is as much a creative act as the interiors themselves. A blueprint without rigid lines; bold, personal, and impossible to imitate.

YOUR STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE
TO SIGNING A MORTGAGE IN SPAIN
Buying a home abroad is an exciting milestone but the paperwork can feel anything but glamorous. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the unfamiliar process of signing a mortgage, especially when dealing with a different legal system and language. Here, we break down the key steps so you know exactly what to expect.
Step 1 Receive the Pre-Contractual Documentation
Once you’ve chosen a bank, you’ll receive several key documents:
• FEIN (European Standardised Information Sheet), outlining all the main conditions of your loan
• FiAE (Standardised Warning Sheet), highlighting any risks like variable interest rates or extra fees,
• Draft contracts and simulations of your mortgage terms.
These must be signed at least 10 days before you can proceed, giving you a legal reflection period to compare offers or walk away with no penalty.
Step 2 Notary Appointment to Sign the Transparency Certificate
Next, you’ll visit the notary to sign a Transparency Certificate, confirming that you understand all mortgage terms. This must happen at least one day before the final signing.
Step 3 Signing the Mortgage Deed
At the same notary’s office, you’ll sign the Mortgage Deed and the Deed of Sale, officially completing the purchase. The bank will release the funds to the seller and the home is yours.
Step 4 Registration and Taxes
Post-signing, the notary submits your paperwork to the Land Registry and arranges for any taxes to be paid.
At Welex, a multilingual law firm in Marbella, we offer expert support at every step. From the first bank document to the final signature, we ensure everything is clear, compliant, and in your best interest. If you’re buying your dream property in Spain, get in touch with us today.
