EDITOR’S NOTE 8

With sustainability continuing to dominate the global agenda, earthy natural tones remain prevalent in latest design trends and concepts. No surprise then that Dulux have chosen “Sweet Embrace” as their 2024 “colour of the year”. Determined by colour experts and inspired by the “mood of the moment”, the international paint brand’s selected colour is described as “a gentle blossom pink in a delicate tone that evokes feelings of positivity… a delicate and optimistic colour, inspired by the softness of feathers and evening clouds”. Around this soft and positive tone, Dulux have created three “colour palette stories”: warm, calm and uplifting. “Each of them offers a different way to create a space where you feel completely at home.” For the warm colour story, they opted for earthy tones to provide a backdrop for homes that makes them feel familiar and comforting. Their calm colour palette is made up of natural greens and blues that can “bring a tranquil and fluid feel to the heart of your home”. Finally, for an uplifting colour story, they mixed “happy paint colours such as lilacs and yellows to create a fun, friendly backdrop without overpowering a room”. Now we await with renewed curiosity what palette Pantone will be highlighting when they announce their 2024 colour later this year. In the meantime, on a similar theme of harmony, we were drawn to San Francisco’s Museum of Craft and Design, which is hosting the “Designing Peace” exhibition until 4 February. Inaugurated in October, the exhibition explores how design can help create social, environmental and economic peace by showcasing 30 global projects. As the organisers explain, “Each project has responded to one of five prompts: how design can engage creative confrontation; how design can address the root causes of conflict; how design can support safe, healthy and respectful environments; how design can embrace truth and dignity in a search for peace and justice; and how design can help transitions from instability to peace.” Admirable objectives at any time, but especially so right now. Back home on the Costa del Sol, for our “Lifestyle” and general décor sections this issue, we dined out at (and were inspired by) the Greek-influenced Mediterranean cuisine at Musaka, learned how to conjure up an exquisite menu for duck confit, and explored the engrossing world of state-of-the-art kitchens and elegantly functional dining areas. The perfect timing, therefore, to start making plans for creating memorable feasts and entertaining family and friends this festive season. Until 2024, we hope you enjoy a relaxing, congenial, revitalising and appropriately sustainable (where possible) end-of-year break. Peter Leonard, Editor

STYLISH OUTDOOR LIVING ALL YEAR ROUND The outdoor furniture world has undergone a significant transformation in recent years, highlighted by the use of improved materials that can better withstand harsh weather conditions – resulting in longer lasting furniture. While minimalist aesthetics and neutral palettes once reigned supreme, this year we have noticed a refreshing shift towards the use of bold hues and organic forms, creating enhanced character and more inviting spaces that coincide with the ideology of merging indoor design with the outdoor space. For many years muted tones such as white, cream, grey and beige were the go-to when it came to outdoor furniture, due to their versatility and ease of seamlessly blending into outdoor areas. However, more recently there has been a growing realisation that individuality and self-expression don’t have to stop at the patio door, and that bold colours and patterns – when chosen well – can inject fun and personality, stimulating the senses. The trend for organic forms is still going strong, with furniture designers increasingly turning to materials that echo the tones and shapes of nature. Natural wood and stone continue to be a popular choice as materials for outdoor furniture, giving a respectful nod to the natural surroundings. Furthermore, sustainability has become a key consideration in contemporary outdoor furniture design. Environmentally-conscious homeowners are demanding materials that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also ecologically responsible, encouraging a trend towards utilising recycled and upcycled materials in recent furniture collections.

Designer Monica Armani drew inspiration from a visit to Japan to create the elegant Ukiyo collection for Tribù. The armchairs and dining table are both made from teak, giving a natural warm aesthetic, and the dining table features a ceramic top for extra durability and visual contrast. Tribù is available from Outdoor Concepts at the top of the Boulevard in San Pedro de Alcántara (www.outdoorconcepts.es), Acoola in Pol. Ind. San Pedro de Alcántara (www.acoola.eu), Siesta Interior Design in C. Kettal’s Il Collonnato dining table, shown here in teak, comes in various sizes, shapes and materials. The design was inspired by the basic elements of architecture where columns support a portico. LIVING ROOMS ...

PERFECTION IN THE LIVING ROOM The living room expresses your own individual style to anyone entering your home as it is usually the first area that visitors walk into. With that in mind, this area of your home holds great importance in the way people perceive your style of living. If your style is minimalist, avant-garde, rustic or bold and colourful, the living area needs to be welcoming and cosy for guests to relax and feel comfortable, in a similar way to how you would feel in the space that you have created for yourself. Neutral-coloured seating has become a popular trend because you can add pops of colour with artwork, cushions, side tables and rugs to bring the room to life. However, a sofa with rich deep colours can also anchor a room, giving the focal point depth and a feeling of cosiness. Go for good storage solutions to keep the room organised and clear of clutter, and consider side tables, which are often overlooked, for convenience, especially when hosting – for easy reach when needing to rest items such as glasses, plates or phones. Coffee tables can serve as a focal point to a living room so choose wisely or even go bold and opt for a sculptural piece. Whatever style you choose, a thoughtful design in your living room will help you be more relaxed when you want to cut off from the world and to feel at peace within what is considered, by many, to be the heart of your home – as well as impressing your guests. Good style, comfort and well-thought-out functionality make the perfect combination, so getting the balance right will pay off in so many ways.

The Alberto and Hexa collections by Passe Partout have been put together to create this stunning look. The modular seating arrangement allows for several different layouts to suit the room. The combination of colours and textures provides an interesting visual aesthetic, adding depth and warmth to a living space. Metamorfoza Home Interiors is an official retailer of Passe Partout, situated in Pol. Ind. Nueva Campana 53 in Nueva Andalucía (www.home-metamorfoza.com).

ORDER IN THE HOUSE In the world of interior design, storage is not just about functionality but also a way to inject creative style into a space. The realm of storage solutions is wide and versatile: from minimalist open shelving, elegant cabinetry and sideboards, and contemporary and sculptural systems to rustic heirlooms, design elements play a pivotal role in creating the perfect space – both functionally and aesthetically. Modular storage systems have become especially popular due to their versatility in providing storage solutions to fit any kind of space. Installing storage that is perfectly adapted to the space aesthetically enhances the room, bringing more harmony to the overall look. Open shelving allows you to showcase your personality by displaying objects that represent the way you live and the objects you cherish. If space is limited, open shelving fixed to a wall is a fabulous space-saving hack. However, if you have an open-plan room, stand-alone open shelving in place of walls is an attractive way to divide the area into zones. This allows you to see through the bookshelf, creating a sense of airiness and space and maintaining flow and connectivity. Concealed storage solutions such as closed cabinets and sideboards keep the room looking uncluttered, with objects being stored out of view. Custom cabinetry with tailored compartments and sleek finishes not only maintains spaces organised but also contributes to a cohesive aesthetic. Take a look at these inspiring storage ideas…

FABRICS

WITH FINESSE Fabrics have the power to transform a space, adding warmth, texture and personality and playing a pivotal role in creating a harmonious and visually appealing living space. They can set the tone of a room, conceiving a sense of luxury, comfort and design style. From plush velvet to casual linen, fabrics make an invaluable contribution to the overall ambience, creating depth and richness. Cushions add not only comfort but also pops of colour, providing visual interest and the finishing touch to a sofa or armchair. Textural fabrics provide cosiness and a tactile allure, giving a sumptuous look. Re-upholstering furniture can breathe a new lease of life into a cherished furniture item, building a story to the piece and maintaining a fresh and relevant look that reflects your evolving design taste. Fabrics absorb sound, reducing echoes and creating a more intimate ambience – ideal for a large room. There is a wide range of fabrics suitable for curtains so it is advisable to consider the overall design theme, the amount of natural light in the space and the desired level of privacy when selecting curtains for a particular room. Sheer fabrics, for example, such as voile or organza create a light and ethereal atmosphere and are ideal for letting in natural light and providing a sense of openness. On the other hand, velvet or blackout curtains come in several styles and colours and are more popular for bedrooms or media rooms, to block out light and enhance privacy. Take a look at these ideas for this winter…

TABLE SETTING

TRENDS

The dining table requires more attention with winter upon us and Christmas around the corner. It is now time to consider if your tableware really represents your style when guests come to visit during this festive period. The world of tableware is vast and it can be quite overwhelming to decide what route you want to go down, depending on whether you want a formal setting, something more playful or a rustic look, for example. Timeless sophistication and personal touches go a long way, and quality is key for your tableware to stand the test of time. Consider porcelain plates adorned with intricate winter motifs, embracing the magic of Christmas, transforming your dining space and celebrating the joy of the festive season. Apart from the staples of cutlery, dinner sets and glassware, give your tablescape a more finished look with candleholders – candles give a warm and cosy glow over the table – and place vases filled with seasonal flowers and foliage to celebrate the natural beauty that surrounds us at this time of the year. Here are some ideas…

LIGHTING ...

MAKING YOUR HOME

SHINE BRIGHT THIS WINTER Now winter is upon us, warm and cosy lighting becomes more of a focus. New collections have recently hit the market, with natural materials, smart technology and architectural lighting being among the prominent trends. Wood, rattan and bamboo add an organic feel and are particularly popular with Scandinavian brands. Lamps with a biophilic design inspired by nature in the shape of branches, plants, animals and rocks are just some of the ways to bring nature into interior spaces – and they have also become a growing trend. On the other hand, metal and glass are still popular materials in lighting and are a go-to when it comes to minimalist interior design projects. With many new-builds opting for open-plan spaces, architectural lighting gives a striking and dynamic aesthetic with clean lines and well-considered lighting design. Fixtures that are controlled by smart devices which can adjust colour, temperature and brightness are also a sign of how the lighting sector is evolving to create more comfortable living conditions. Bold statement lighting serves as a fabulous focal point in a room, with original artistic designs, oversized pendants and showstopping chandeliers creating drama and visual interest within a space. Lamps with bold colours are another way to draw the eye and inject personality into a room. Take a look at these ideas…

Danish lighting brand Louis Poulsen collaborated with Fendi Casa to create a collection that demonstrates their design flair, craftsmanship and meticulous detail. The collection was showcased earlier this year at Salone del Mobile in Milan, comprising five pieces of Poul Henningsen’s iconic PH lamps that were reimagined with Fendi’s design style, pattern and colour palette. AN APPETITE

FOR STYLISH DINING As the dining table takes prominence around the festive period, now is an excellent time to check out latest collections in furniture for the dining area. Natural materials, especially wood, continue to dominate dining table designs. Oak, walnut, and reclaimed wood are popular choices, bringing warmth and a connection to nature into dining spaces. Circular dining tables are gaining popularity for their versatility and ability to foster a sense of intimacy. They work well in smaller spaces and encourage conversation as everyone is facing each other. However, traditional rectangular tables maintain their appeal, especially in larger dining rooms, offering a more classic and formal look. Extendable tables are highly practical, with many collections including this option, which makes it easier to accommodate unexpected guests. Matching chairs around the table is no longer a must. Mixing different styles, colours or materials adds a more personal touch to the dining area. Comfort is paramount so chairs with good back support and cushioning and the correct height for the table are key elements to enhance the dining experience. Bolia’s Graceful grand dining table in oiled oak seats 12 people comfortably. Shown here with their Swing upholstered dining chair with an oiled oak frame, this dining set offers a beautifully timeless look and will last for years to come. Jensen Store in Pol. Ind. Nueva Campana (www.jensenstore.com) and Your Home Styling in C.C. Nórdico on the Mijas Road (www.yourhomestyling.com), are official distributors of Bolia.

WHEN CREATIVITY HITS THE WALL In the world of interior design, statement walls have become a powerful way to express design individuality and bring a visual focus to a room. Many years ago murals were created using the paintbrushes of talented artists, but now the wallpaper market has taken over this trend by storm. Wallcoverings with geometric patterns, landscape panoramas and abstract designs all draw the eye and make a strong visual impact, infusing personality and energy into the living space. Jewelled tones such as gold, silver, emerald green, sapphire blue and ruby red add a touch of opulence and drama. Luxurious wallcoverings are akin to a tactile symphony, using indulgent materials such as velvet, silk and suede to stimulate the senses visually and also the touch. As the world gravitates towards sustainable design practices, wallcoverings crafted from organic materials have gained popularity. Grasscloth, cork and bamboo wallcoverings not only inject an earthy warmth but also tell a story of eco-conscious design. The subtle imperfections and variations in these materials contribute to a unique and authentic overall look. With many people opting to create more of a serene feel to their home, bringing nature indoors with earthy neutral tones and choosing designs with landscape, botanical or wildlife references has become a popular choice. Soft muted colours always evoke a sense of tranquillity and, if the room is small, they will give the impression that it is more spacious than it really is. Here is some inspiration for your walls…

Les Boas by Fromental is a bold design inspired by the maquettes and paintings of Boucheron, Cartier and Lalique in the thirties. The reptile design is embellished with hand-painted touches on a gilded background (www.fromental.co.uk).

TRENDS IN THE TAPESTRY

BENEATH OUR FEET Rugs are not mere floor coverings, but rather the soulful tapestries that visually weave together the essence of a room. Functionality and aesthetic beauty should collide for maximum enjoyment, providing warmth underfoot and better acoustics with artistic flair. Recent years have been highlighted by increased popularity for reversible rugs that allow you to flip perspectives and celebrate versatility. This dual-sided enchantment not only adds a practical touch but also doubles the visual feast. The world of rugs can sometimes be kaleidoscopic through contemporary patterns and designs that redefine the conventional notions of interior aesthetics, transforming a standard room into something spectacular. From bold, asymmetrical strokes to subtle, intricate details, these rugs are more than just accessories – they’re statement pieces. Patterns can narrate tales of culture, modernity and the avant-garde, providing a unique language and giving depth and heart to any interior space. There are a myriad of possibilities with these versatile and fluffy accessories, not just with the design but also with the shape to add an extra artistic expression. However, plain neutral colours – where simplicity meets sophistication – also have their place in the realm of rugs within many living spaces, embracing a palette of soft creams, gentle beiges and greys and providing a calming visual anchor. In this understated and timeless beauty lies the power to transform space into a harmonious balance that whispers sophistication in every fibre. Natural fibres connect us to the earth beneath our feet, offering the plush comfort of wool or the rugged charm of jute and bringing warmth and authenticity to a living space. Many large brands have delved into the sustainable allure of rugs that not only scream style but also echo the harmonious balance between design and nature with eco-friendly manufacturing.

The Eclectic Yard, by Paula Cademartori for Illulian Limited Edition, is a contemporary collection of hand-knotted rugs made from Himalayan wool and natural silk. Her inspiration was flora and organic forms in bright and eye-catching colour. Shown here is the Floralia Yard Volume II Version A rug (www.illulian.com).

A SYMPHONY OF ELEGANCE AND INNOVATION

IN THE BATHROOM The bathroom has emerged in recent years as a sanctuary for self-care and a canvas for creative expression. Washbasins are no longer simply functional installations; now they stand as sculptural masterpieces, seamlessly blending form and function. From minimalist designs that celebrate clean lines to bold and artistic basins that serve as focal points, the latest collections in washbasins are a veritable visual feast, fusing materials, shapes and sizes that redefine the boundaries of conventional basin design. Faucets, once relegated to a utilitarian role, have metamorphosed into choreographed symphonies of form and flow, sometimes marrying precision engineering with artistic flair. Whether it’s the sleek elegance of matte black finishes, the timeless charm of brushed metals or the introduction of smart technology, faucets are evolving to meet the demands of the discerning homeowner. In the quest for bathroom luxury, materials often take centre stage. There has been a recent revival of timeless classics such as marble and granite, alongside the rise of innovative, sustainable materials that redefine opulence. Designers have pushed the boundaries by interplaying textures, colours and finishes to create spaces that are not only visually stunning but also environmentally conscious. The bathtub, a symbol of relaxation and indulgence, has also undergone a metamorphosis in contemporary interior design. From freestanding sculptures that redefine spatial dynamics to high-tech hydrotherapy wonders, the world of bathtubs is witnessing a renaissance. Showers have evolved into immersive experiences, combining technology and tranquillity. From rain showers that mimic a natural downpour to smart systems that personalise water temperature and pressure, showers are transforming bathrooms into personal sanctuaries, seamlessly integrating with the overall modern aesthetic.

YOUR SLUMBER SANCTUARY We all enjoy a good night’s sleep and, in order to achieve this, your bedroom has to be perfectly designed for personal requirements, with your bed being one of the fundamental elements. In recent years, pocket spring mattresses have taken the sleep experience to a whole new level, providing optimal support and comfort, and adapting to your body’s contours. The feeling of high-quality bed linen against your skin can make all the difference to how you sleep. Investing in good bed linen enhances the comfort and aesthetics of your bedroom, inviting you to dive under the covers and indulge in the serenity of your private sanctuary. Bedside tables are often shown little appreciation but these functional pieces also serve as important design accents that can tie your bedroom décor together. Investing in good storage solutions such as well-designed wardrobes and drawers will create a sense of tranquillity in the space, helping to keep your mind relaxed.

KITCHENS TO INSPIRE YOU Kitchen design is a reflection of personal taste, blending aesthetic appeal with practicality to craft a space that truly inspires and suits the way you like to create your culinary delicacies. Materials for your kitchen should be selected with careful consideration. Whether you choose to install stone, marble, ceramic or wood, materials influence not only the look but also the feel of the space. In this era of sustainability, homeowners and designers alike are increasingly turning to eco-friendly materials, bringing the essence of nature indoors while making a statement about environmental responsibility. The evolution of kitchen appliances, particularly ovens, is a testament to our everaccelerating technological age. For example, the iconic cast-iron AGA oven, which embodies tradition with timeless charm, is still a hugely popular choice for those who appreciate both history and innovation in their home. Today’s ovens are not just cooking appliances: they are intelligent culinary companions with smart technology that transforms the way we interact with our kitchens. They say the kitchen is the heart of the home, where memories are made and the art of cooking is celebrated, so creating a space that is both functional and inspiring should be thought out with meticulous care.

All of the high-quality materials used to design this kitchen area by Modulnova combine superlative functionality with aesthetic finesse. The sleek, clean lines of the design give the overall look an understated sophistication. A LONG-STANDING COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE AND TIMELESS ELEGANCE INTERVIEW WITH ANDREA BÖCK – FOUNDER AND OWNER OF AMBIENCE HOME DESIGN

Ambience Home Design has become a highly-respected brand both locally and internationally. How have you managed to achieve such success? I am proud to say that our interior design firm has been leading the industry for over two decades now. We have worked hard to refine our design approach, cultivate a team of outstanding professionals and gain extensive experience in the field. Our company’s success is attributed to our unwavering commitment to quality, attention to detail and a personalised approach. We pride ourselves on delivering designs that not only meet our client’s expectations but exceed them. With a strong emphasis on customer satisfaction, we have built long-lasting relationships with our clients, many of whom continue to seek our services for their subsequent projects locally and in their home countries. In addition to our core team, we also collaborate with a network of trusted contractors, suppliers and artisans who share our commitment to excellence. This enables us to execute projects seamlessly, ensuring that the vision we create on paper is beautifully translated into reality. Overall, our company’s background is rooted in years of experience, a dedicated team and a passion for creating remarkable interior spaces that leave a lasting impression. How would you define your overall design philosophy? Our design philosophy revolves around timeless elegance, meticulous 156

attention to detail, uncompromising quality, personalisation, harmonious spaces and captivating experiences. By bringing these principles together, we strive to create exceptional spaces that exude refinement while keeping them functional. We stay updated on the latest fashion and design trends while also adding our unique touches to each project, incorporating elements from top brands and the latest design movements to create luxurious spaces. Personalisation is central to our approach, ensuring that each design reflects the personality and needs of the individual client. Our ultimate goal is to create environments that are both beautiful and functional, enhancing the quality of life for those who live and work in them. As someone who has worked in many countries and had a first-hand view of many different places, how has travelling influenced your designs? My extensive travels have had a profound impact on my approach to interior design. It all began with a natural inclination towards creativity and a fascination with how spaces can be transformed. My journey in the field began when I first discovered my passion for design and architecture. However, it was a significant move from Germany to the captivating Costa del Sol that truly shaped my design philosophy. Travelling and working in diverse countries has significantly influenced my designs. I’ve been exposed to different cultures that have expanded my design appreciation, expanded my colour choices and enriched my

creative process. Travel has been a profound source of inspiration, shaping my designs to be culturally sensitive, innovative and globally relevant. How do you effectively balance “classic” and contemporary” in your designs? My primary focus lies in understanding the property’s style, the opportunities it presents and our client’s ideas. I aim to create a harmonious design by subtly incorporating elements that stand the test of time, but also providing some unexpected twists. I draw inspiration from the latest design trends and incorporate the influence of renowned brands to infuse our projects with luxury and quality. However, I also believe in the importance of individuality. We customise each design to reflect the unique personality and desires of our clients and their properties. This ensures that there are always timeless features and items that will never go out of style. There are a few rules that shouldn’t be broken but, as for the rest, they can and should be broken – provided, of course, you know what you are doing. It’s not about finding the perfect match, but rather about the perfect contrast. How do you feel Mediterranean style within the realm of interior design has evolved over recent years? The Mediterranean style is a well-loved and established concept in interior decoration and design, taking inspiration from the stunning countries and regions surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, such as Italy, Spain, Greece

and southern France. This style perfectly captures the charm, warmth and relaxed yet elegant ambience of these areas. However, we have witnessed the evolution and redefinition of these Mediterranean styles over the years. What was once considered a Mediterranean style 20 years ago is now seen as old-fashioned, as there is a new Mediterranean style that has emerged. This style is typically less modern, clean and sharp, and instead it focuses on being more organic, soft and comfortable with lots of layers of textures. You like to collect antiques from your travels… How important is it to add this touch to an interior design project? I personally find that sometimes incorporating antiques from my travels adds a unique and personal touch to an interior design project. It not only serves as a reminder of my adventures but also adds character and history to the space. Ultimately, the goal of any interior design project is to create a comfortable and relaxing environment that reflects the individual’s personality and style. This region has a long tradition in this sector and is home to an extensive and diverse array of furniture manufacturers who produce a wide range of products, from traditional to modern designs. Not surprisingly then, Feria Hábitat is hailed as the leading trade fair in Spain and one of the most significant home décor exhibitions in Europe.

Showcasing all aspects of home design – including furniture, lighting, tableware, fabrics and wallpapers, bathroom design, kitchens and outdoor accessories, among much more – the 2023 exhibition spanned 96,000 square metres, with 800 companies exhibiting their products and services to hugely impressed visitors who travelled to the fair from 70 different countries. This edition of Feria Hábitat València further marked its consolidation as Spain’s foremost event for the furniture, lighting and décor sector. The industry is currently in good shape, with latest available figures showing output valued at €4,690 million in 2022 and 1.6 per cent growth in the first quarter of this year, according to the AIDIMME Observatory. Exports also continue to boom, notes the observatory, experiencing a 6.6 per cent increase during the first six months of 2023. Meanwhile, sales of furniture were 11 per cent up last year, according to the DBK consultancy. This ongoing growth was reflected in the resounding success of this year’s Feria Hábitat València, which reported higher numbers than the previous year (in fact, the biggest edition of the last decade). In addition, nearly all of Spain’s leading companies in the industry were present. Hábitat also boosted its guest visitor program this year through an ambitious international campaign rolled out in association with IVACE, ICEX and trade associations ANIEME and Fedai in markets such as the U.S. that are increasingly important. Significantly, 15 per cent of the 48,000 visitors came from 70 countries. Feria Hábitat València has firmly enhanced its status as a major global design hub in recent years. This year the fair once again focused on key latest trends, with design innovation and sustainability playing a significant role, showcasing cutting-edge materials and organic solutions: from recyclable PET fibres and renewable raw materials to long-lasting surfaces and high-performance textiles with, for example, built-in digital, voice-assisted mechanisms. In conjunction with the overall fair, Home Textiles Premium by Textilhogar has become another leading international event within the sector. This year, the event attracted buyers from 43 countries including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, Germany, India, Ivory Coast, Japan, Jordan, Malaysia, Malta, New Zealand, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, the United States and Uruguay. Visitors were also able to view other dedicated exhibitions staged throughout the Hábitat and HTP by Textilhogar spaces. One of the most notable this year was the 19th edition of the emerging design talent exhibition Salón Nude, which featured nine young designers and nine schools of design and university design faculties. Away from the actual fair, industry professionals had the opportunity of attending dozens of events and exhibitions that were part of the València Design Fest program. www.feriahabitatvalencia.com

SIN STUDIO BOHEMIAN GALLERY OPENS FIRST INTERNATIONAL SHOWCASE IN MARBELLA Marbella has been chosen as the home of SIN Studio’s first physical gallery outside its home base in the Czech Republic. Inaugurated in October, the gallery is divided into two spaces – for glass sculptures and paintings. SIN Studio Gallery provides exclusive collaborations based on its “globally unique glass casting technology”. According to the gallery, its vision is to create original pieces featuring a distinctive style, with each product strictly limited by number and colour. The gallery caters to leading international artists, especially in the field of fine arts, who are aiming to transform their existing work or create new artworks. Perfected by glass master Jiří Šín over 12 years, “Vitrum Vivum” is based on “a groundbreaking method of cast glass production. It employs the revolutionary process of pouring hot glass into a closed mould, enabling the creation of a faithful cast of any object. “This is an essential shift in the field of cast glass sculpture, previously perfected and promoted by Professor Stanislav Libenský. The new technology invented by Jiří Šín takes the craft of glassmaking to the next level, making it possible to create threedimensional glass sculptures with a realistic structure without any limitations on size and shape for the first time in history.” Two years ago Jiří Topinka sold his printing business in Prague after 20 years, and he was approached by the owners of SIN Studio Gallery to establish galleries around the world. His love for Spain, and a six-month stay on the Costa del Sol in 2022, inspired Topinka and his wife to open the first gallery in Marbella. “It is a city where luxury, international business and big development come together. It is also a city close to Málaga which has culture, monuments and Christianity.” The Marbella gallery is currently offering the works of Czech artists, primarily Rony Plesl, Milan Knižák, Jan Kovářík and Ondrash & Kašpárek. They are planning several events each year, and promise to “always try to surprise those interested in art and our potential customers with something unique”. They are also looking forward to collaborating with local companies. Opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday 10 am-6 pm. Also available for individual consultations or personal viewings outside these designated hours. Avda Ricardo Soriano 59, Marbella Tel. IBIZA

With Ibiza being less than an hour and a half away from Málaga by plane, it is little wonder that the island is a popular destination for those living on the Costa del Sol and beyond. In the past Ibiza has tended to be synonymous with wild parties and a hedonistic nightlife scene. However, this picturesque Balearic island has undergone a remarkable transformation, moving away from its party-centric reputation and attracting a different kind of traveller who seeks luxury tranquillity and culture. Three years ago, during the period of the Coronavirus lockdown, we featured boutique hotel Petunia Ibiza – an outstanding and very special hideaway nestled in the south-westerly hills of the island that had only opened its doors to the public a few months before. We decided to revisit this little Ibizan oasis to see how they were getting on following a difficult start. During our visit to Ibiza, we also took the opportunity to discover the opposite side of the island to gain another perspective of this vibrant archipelago, staying at Hotel Riomar in the popular tourist area of Santa Eulalia. Read more about our travels to the Balearic island of Ibiza, which is steeped in culture, history and natural beauty…

H OT E L R I O M A R ( SA N TA E U L A L I A D E L R Í O ) Following our visit to the south-west coast of Ibiza, we ventured easterly to stay at Hotel Riomar, part of the Marriot Bonvoy portfolio and located in the popular tourist area of Santa Eulalia. Just 21 kilometres from the airport, Santa Eulalia offers a livelier scene than where we had stayed on the west side of the island, with numerous bars, restaurants and shops, including a bustling marina located right on the hotel’s doorstep. On arrival, the staff are extremely welcoming, helping with luggage and very forthcoming to give as much information as necessary to make you feel at home. The floor-to-ceiling windows as you enter the hotel frame a stunning outlook out to the sea, which is interrupted only by picturesque palm trees. All around the hotel are art deco references featured in the interior design, giving off Miami vibes. In fact, considering Riomar is considered a boutique hotel, it feels quite expansive. Many of the rooms at Hotel Riomar offer uninterrupted panoramic sea views, allowing you to appreciate the true beauty of the coastline and the glistening sunlight shining over the sea. Our room had a modern and minimalist design and it came with a terrace that looked directly out to the Mediterranean. Even though the size of our room was not very large, the minimalist contemporary design made it seem spacious. The hotel offers morning yoga classes and there is an impressive gym

equipped with Technogym machines and water and towels at the ready. During the day you can relax around their sleek contemporary pool area on comfortable sun loungers and daybeds while enjoying relaxed music crafted by the resident DJ. The pool area also caters for families with a children’s pool – so everyone can enjoy the ambience. The hotel’s main restaurant, Ocean Brasserie & Bar, offers incomparable sea views with a menu that is impressively diverse and creative. It is not huge but lists a wide variety of options ranging from Spanish appetisers such as calamari, Padrón peppers and Iberian ham to fresh salads, sandwiches, fish and meat dishes, as well as a handful of indulgent dessert options to choose from. All dishes that we received were colourful, beautifully presented and full of flavour, so we would highly-recommend taking a lunch there – and the views out to the sea from the restaurant are the icing on the cake. Being situated so close to the sea and local amenities, Hotel Riomar is excellently located. For a four-star hotel, the facilities are impressive and the overall service, second-to-none. Tel. P E T U N I A I B I Z A ( CA L A CA R B Ó ) Situated just above the quaint Cala Carbó shore, the hotel Petunia Ibiza offers glorious and breathtaking views over the Es Vedrà island, an imposing rock where legend claims it was the home of Sirens of Greek mythology, where sailors died due to the songs that emanated from it and which led to numerous shipwrecks. It is also considered by the islanders to be the birthplace of Tanit, a goddess from the Phoenician era and a figure who is referenced and can be observed all over the island. Nowadays people are drawn to the rock for its draw-dropping tranquillity and majestic beauty, offering a popular viewpoint for meditation and photo opportunities. Just a half-hour taxi drive from the airport, when you check-in to Petunia Ibiza – which has transitioned from adults-only to child-friendly and is also set for a fabulous renovation in 2024 – you are met with happy staff that greet you genuinely and in a relaxed way that transcends to your inner conscience, immediately putting you at ease. The décor in the reception is calming and well-conceived, with soft neutral tones and natural textiles paving the way for what is to come. We stayed in a charming two-bedroom Mediterranean-style bungalow with en suite bathrooms and an open-plan living room/kitchen and terrace situated close to the hotel’s very own allotment, where they grow vegetables for their restaurants. As we expected following our visit to the reception area, the decoration style continued on into our dwellings – contemporary bohochic with a strong luxury Mediterranean-style influence featuring natural materials and fabrics and plenty of space to relax and take in the serenity of the location. For those who want to enjoy the hotel facilities during the day, there is a beautiful large swimming pool that easily accommodates all residents, who can enjoy free towels and pool service while marvelling at the views across the Es Vedrà. While we were there, an acoustic guitarist sat by the pool playing relaxing music and creating the ideal ambience to unwind while enjoying the stunning surroundings. We were informed that live music is 176

often held by the pool, providing a wonderful poolside experience. Dotted around Petunia are three gastronomic zones: La Mirada Rooftop, Los Olivos and La Mesa d’Es Vedrà. La Mirada Rooftop offers exceptional raw cuisine and is an Instagrammer’s dream, located high up in the grounds of the hotel with an unsurpassable vista over the rock. Each dish was nothing short of a work of art, with masterfully balanced flavours using fresh and interesting ingredients – a foodie heaven and highly-recommended for a special evening with a loved one. Another restaurant in their grounds is Los Olivos, situated by the pool with a menu offering authentic dishes from the Mediterranean such as croquettes, pizzas, Spanish rice specialities and fresh salads that were all reasonably priced and beautifully presented. Los Olivos allows you to take in the idyllic pool experience while enjoying the exquisite dishes provided by the chef, which are all well curated and carefully thought through to bring you a superlative dining experience for a day at the pool. The third restaurant, La Mesa d’Es Vedrà, is where guests can take their breakfast as well as dine in the evening. For breakfast they offer a varied buffet catering for a wide range of diets. For dinner, guests can enjoy exquisite dishes celebrating local ingredients in a unique and creative way, such as a cold Ibiza almond cream with garlic; Mediterranean shrimp, grapes and caviar; Mediterranean octopus paella with a “tap de cortí” paprika emulsion; black suckling pig with pickled red cabbage, sweet potato puree and glazed shallot; and a sea fennel with beef tenderloin, truffled parmentier, grilled foie and bimi. Petunia Ibiza offers a very special hotel experience. Blessed with phenomenal views, the design of this hotel is understated yet chic and relaxed. The outstanding service and attention to detail is notable without being overbearing, making Petunia Ibiza well worth a visit. reservations@petuniaibiza.com www.petuniaibiza.com

CREATING YOUR OWN

CA N D L E L I T D I N N E R AT H O M E BY CHILI GOURMET CATERING CHEF HELLE BARLEBO

NOW THAT THE COLDER SEASON HAS ARRIVED, IT’S TIME FOR SOME COMFORT FOOD WITH YOUR LOVED ONES, IN A COSY DINING SETTING AT HOME. HERE ARE MY FAVOURITE VERSIONS OF THE FRENCH CLASSICS…

Confit of Duck (serves 4 people) Ingredients: 8 large duck legs 2 cloves of garlic (sliced) 4 bay leaves fresh thyme and rosemary salt and pepper (I love the mix of five kinds of peppers) duck fat and (if needed) flavour-neutral oil Clean the duck legs free of any impurities and pat them dry with a kitchen towel. Rub them with plenty of salt, and season with freshly ground pepper. Place the legs in a bowl and add all the herbs, garlic and bay leaves. Mix well both over and under the legs and refrigerate for about 24 hours. Melt the duck fat in a saucepan over low heat. Brush the duck legs free of herbs and most of the salt, and place them in the duck fat. If there is not 178

NOVEMBER & DECEMBER 2023

enough fat to cover them, add some flavour-neutral oil, as it is important that all parts of the duck legs are covered. Now let the duck legs cook on very low heat for two and a half to three hours. On my stove it is “2” out of “9”, and the oil is approximately 85-90 degrees hot. It should just send small hot bubbles up through the pan, and must not get too hot. When the duck legs are tender, they are ready for the next phase. If you are like me and prefer to prepare in advance, you can easily store them in the fat in the fridge until needed. When ready to eat, place the thighs on a baking tray with a little of the duck fat. Fry them in the oven until they are crispy, at 220 degrees for about 15-18 minutes. If not crispy enough, turn on the grill for three to four minutes, while you keep a close eye on them so they don’t burn. If you are busy and don’t have time for the long process, you can choose to buy pre-cooked confit duck or you can also contact me for catering the complete menu.

Pommes Anna Ingredients: 1 kg cooking potatoes (medium-sized) 5 large tablespoons of butter 1 tablespoon of flake salt 2 cloves of garlic (fine slices) fresh thyme and pepper Parmesan or mozzarella to taste Peel the potatoes and rinse them in cold water. To slice them into fine slices, I recommend using a mandolin, which makes them even and ready in a few moments. Prepare a non-stick frying pan or, if you are making a larger portion, use a long oven-proof pan, which makes it easy to cut your needed sizes when done. Melt the butter, but don’t fry it. The trick is to brush the bottom of the pan with butter and then add some salt before the first layer of potatoes. Then there is a good chance that it doesn’t stick when done. When you stack your first layer of potatoes, start from the middle and work your way to the outside of the pan. Then you brush some more butter, season with the herbs, cheese, salt and pepper, and repeat the process starting in reverse from the outside to the inside with the potatoes. This gives you more stability in the layers. Continue until you have about four layers, or you run out of potatoes. Put some baking paper and another pan on top, place some pressure and bake in the oven at 200 degrees for 25 minutes. Remove the paper and pan and bake for an additional 20 minutes. If you prefer a creamier result, you can add a little whipping cream to the layers.

Chanterelle Sauté Sauce 250 gr fresh chanterelle mushrooms 1 clove of garlic (finely chopped) 1 shallots onion (finely cut) 1 spoonful of virgin olive oil 1 spoonful of butter splash of white wine 250 ml cold whipping cream (optional) fresh chopped parsley Maldon flake salt and pepper to taste I love funnel-shaped chanterelles from the woodland of mushrooms, which often become the star of any plate. Make a minute sauté of the garlic and shallots in a mix of butter and olive oil in a frying pan at a medium-high temperature. Add the chanterelle mushrooms and fry for a couple of minutes until tender, before adding the white wine and whipping cream. Let the liquid reduce by half. Before serving add parsley and season with a little salt and pepper. If you are not a fan of cream, you can leave it out for a purer taste of the chanterelles. You could also use your favourite kind of another mushroom – or a mix of different ones. If you are feeling bold, make a hot and spicy variation by adding one fresh red chilli in slices, together with the garlic and onions, and try with fresh thyme and rosemary instead of parsley. countries. The chef creates dishes that stay true to the traditional recipes so there are no surprises. He simply serves honest, fresh, good-quality ingredients mixed together with great care and attention. For our visit, the staff were very accommodating and friendly, making us feel truly welcome. We were a table of three and chose to sit outside on their tranquil covered terrace surrounded by lush plants. We ordered their Greek salad, tzatziki, meatballs, aubergine salad, halloumi and mixed grilled meat platter. All dishes were well-cooked and presented beautifully without being too fussy, and the portion sizes were very generous, ensuring you won’t leave hungry.

On Friday and Saturday evenings, starting from 9pm, Musaka has live entertainment with singers or dancers creating a buzzy upbeat atmosphere. To find out more about what is happening when you visit, follow them on social media where they regularly post their program. Their commitment to organising entertainment makes this venue ideal for parties or for friends to get together in a convivial environment. With Christmas upon us, Musaka is a great option to celebrate the festivities.

NUTRITIONAL HEALTH BENEFITS OF APPLES AND SMOOTHIES MEDICAL MINUTES BY JOHN SCHIESZER

Apples Pack Powerful Nutritional Punch An apple a day may do much more than just keep the doctor away. Apples pack a big nutritional punch and may help lower your risk for cancer. Additionally, apples may help a person feel more full and eat less throughout the day. Apples are believed to be highly beneficial in terms of nutrients due to their composition (fruit, flesh, peel, leaf, seed or root). Apples are easy to store and transport, they are typically available year-round, and they contain phytochemicals (quercetin, catechin, chlorogenic acid, anthocyanin) and fibre that is both insoluble and soluble. American researcher Julia Zumpano, RD, a registered dietitian from Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Human Nutrition in Ohio, said a medium apple provides 4.5 grams of fibre and is a good source of vitamin C and antioxidants. Despite the higher carb content, the glycemic index of an apple is low, which is a measure of how the food affects the rise in blood sugar. “This means it leads to improved blood sugar control.” Apples contain key antioxidants, including quercetin, which has been shown to help combat certain cancers and inflammation, and boost immunity. “Apples can have antiviral and anti-depressant benefits,” said Zumpano, and they may be beneficial for someone trying to lose weight. “The fibre helps you feel full. Apples are crunchy, juicy, sweet and sour, and they can be very satisfying, leading to better satiety. Some studies have indicated weight loss benefits, and others that apples can help reduce cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugars.” Smoothies with Nutritional Boost Smoothies can be tasty, convenient and an excellent way to obtain the recommended fruits and vegetables you need for a healthy diet. However, some smoothies may not be the best combo. Researchers at the University of California in Davis have found that blending certain

ingredients in smoothies can influence whether your body is getting a nutritional boost. The study, which was published in the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Food and Function journal, examined smoothies to test how various levels of polyphenol oxidase, an enzyme in many fruits and vegetables, affects the levels of flavanols in food to be absorbed by the body. Flavanols are a group of bioactive compounds that are good for your heart and cognitive health. Flavanols are naturally found in apples, pears, blueberries, blackberries, grapes and cocoa. “We sought to understand, on a very practical level, how a common food and food preparation like a banana-based smoothie could affect the availability of flavanols to be absorbed after intake,” said lead author Javier Ottaviani, an adjunct researcher with the UC Davis Department of Nutrition. Slice an apple or peel a banana and the fruit will quickly turn brown. That happens because of polyphenol oxidase or PPO. It is an enzyme naturally present in those foods. The researchers wanted to know whether consuming freshly prepared smoothies made with different PPO-containing fruits impacted the amount of flavanols available to the body. They found that, if people decide to consume fruits or vegetables in the form of smoothies, and seek to benefit from flavanols, it is important to avoid combining the flavanol-rich foods with ones that quickly turn brown after they are cut, like bananas and avocados. Recipes that mix flavanolrich fruits like berries with oranges or mangoes, instead of bananas, would minimise the loss of flavanols during smoothie preparation. “Bananas remain a great fruit and a great option for smoothie preparation, but not if aiming at maintaining the flavanols in your smoothie,” said Ottaviani. VA P I N G V I CTO RY A SMOKE-FREE FUTURE BY RACHEL GARROD

Unless you have been living on the moon you can’t have helped noticing the proliferation of people “vaping”. E-cigarettes are everywhere, in a multitude of colours, sizes and shapes and a myriad of different flavoured liquids to inhale. Even though vaping devices are regulated and can only be sold to adults 18 years or over, it is common to see children using them. This is of course worrying and we should be doing all we can to ensure regulations are enforced.

However, for adults, the medical consensus appears to be that, while long-term possible damage is as yet unknown, the risks of vaping are significantly less than the known risks of smoking. Cigarette smokers are two to four times more likely to suffer heart disease than non-smokers, and this is mainly because cigarettes contain 7,000-plus toxic chemicals that are not present in e-cigarettes. Debbie Robson, senior lecturer on tobacco harm at King’s College in London, has said the following: “There is quite a lot of misinformation about vaping. Misconceptions that I hear are that ‘vapes are just as bad as smoking’. That ‘vapes are a way for the tobacco industry to prolong the use of their products and make money’. I still hear incorrect information about ‘popcorn lung’, which is not related to vaping at all. These are some of the main misconceptions I hear about vaping. All of which are not true.” In addition to health issues, a Cochrane review published this year states, “There is high-certainty evidence that electronic cigarettes with nicotine increase quit rates compared with nicotine replacement therapy.” Based on the evidence we have, using e-cigarettes with nicotine is an effective strategy to help stop smoking. Of course, the best scenario is to stop smoking or vaping altogether. In that case Cytisine, a herbal product that is proven to be effective in smoking cessation, may be your first choice. If you want support to help stop smoking by using Cytisine, e-vaping or hypnotherapy, please get in touch. Stopping smoking is the most important thing you can do for your health, and there is help available when you are ready. Rachel Garrod Respiratory Physiotherapist Ph.D Tel. OPEN SEA...

P E R S H I N G GT X 1 16 O P E N I N G U P A R E VO LU T I O N A RY N E W D I M E NS I O N I N YAC H T I N G It is described as innovative, thrilling and disruptive. A revolutionary collaboration between Pershing and Ferretti – in both concept and design – this first “Sport Utility Yacht” is the flagship of the new GTX range. Designed for comfort and exceptional onboard liveability”, the Pershing GTX116 is characterised by high performance and a “sporty attitude”, featuring elegant and aerodynamic exterior styling. It is 35 metres long and over seven metres in the beam, with generous open spaces, areas in direct contact with the water, two decks, and an upper sportfly that can comfortably accommodate up to 10 guests thanks to its new five-cabin layout, plus three cabins for the crew.

This masterpiece of cutting-edge naval design brought together the Ferretti group product strategy committee led by Piero Ferrari, the design firm headed by Fulvio De Simoni and the group’s engineering department. Together they crafted an intelligent distribution and use of space, with a fluid flow system connecting the internal and external living areas – including two stairways built into the superstructure that link the main deck and the sportbridge. The yacht comes in a shade of Montecarlo grey, chosen – they say – with a nod to the gran turismo automotive tradition. “Extensive glazing bathes the interiors with natural light while offering up spectacular marine panoramas.” Some of the external features, such as the ventilation grills and windshield visor, were produced for the first time using 3D printing technology “ to obtain subtly unconventional geometries”. The stern garage can accommodate a jet tender up to 5.2 metres long and a jet ski, while a crane is hidden in the bulwark to facilitate moving these water toys into and out of the sea. “With a design approach that ensures seamless interconnection, the exteriors and interiors of the new Pershing GTX116 become part of the same space, facilitating onboard flows and enhancing the liveability of the areas involved.” Extending across two levels, the main deck is the focus of innovation in the new GTX range, with the first designed for outdoor life in contact with the sea and the second for socialising and conviviality. On the first level is a spacious beach club, a 40-square-metre teak-covered area at the water’s edge, consisting of an extended stern platform and a sundeck separated by lateral gunwales. Comprising an external social and dining area and a bar, the panoramic cockpit also leads into the lavishly-sized main saloon.

NOVEMBER & DECEMBER 2023

Further forward, the dining area has a large table seating up to 10 people, while the galley, depending on the owner’s needs, can also be designed with a bar counter-show kitchen. The bridge is characterised by a futuristic console, black leather upholstery and a carbon fibre pilot seat, and the top choice version is fitted with latestgeneration ultra-wide Navico-Simrad screens for high-precision navigation. The sun area in the bow can be fitted with an optional whirlpool jacuzzi. The five-cabin night area has a centrally positioned full-beam owner’s cabin, two doubles and two twins, all with a private bathroom, plus a sixth bathroom off the main stairway. Further forward are a pantry, a laundry and three cabins for a five-member crew. To enable the owner and their guests to enjoy absolute privacy, the crew area connects directly to the helm station on the main deck. The yacht is also designed with crew-only passageways so that crew members have no need to cross spaces reserved for the owner and guests. The sportbridge deck extends over 40 square metres, is partially covered by a hardtop and features a fully-equipped bar area with seating built into the main structure. Forward is the exterior helm station, with up to three sport seats “to give guests a thrilling hands-on experience”. The engine room is equipped with a triple water jet propulsion system, enabling all the components to fit into a smaller space and provide more room for the garage and beach area. The system can be paired with three MAN V12 2000 engines, each rated 2,000 mhp (optional), for a top speed of 34 knots and a cruising speed of 29 knots. The standard engines are three MAN V12 1800 units rated 1,800 mhp. The yacht has a RINA Class Certificate for Pleasure Yachts.

CIVIL R E S P O NS I B I L I T I E S W H E N B UY I N G A N E W P R O P E RT Y I N S PA I N Have you bought a new property in Spain? Would you like to purchase a newly-built property in Spain? If so, you will be pleased to know that Spanish law dictates specific guarantee periods and gives consumers the opportunity to exercise successful legal actions in Spain.

Spanish law 28/1999 (dated 5 November) establishes a series of guarantee periods, enabling buyers to exercise corresponding legal actions in Spain in relation to material damages that might arise after the construction (or parts) of a building against the agents who took part in the construction: a) A term of guarantee for a period of 10 years, for those material damages caused in the building as a consequence of the existence of defects or damages that affect the foundations, supports, beams, slabs, loadbearing walls or other structural elements that may compromise the mechanical strength and stability of the building. b) A term of guarantee for a period of three years, as a result of the existence or appearance of material damages due to defects or deficiencies of those constructive elements that suppose the breach of any of habitability requirements, such as hygiene, health, noise, energy saving, environmental protection and rational use of energy. c) A term of guarantee for a period of one year, to exercise actions against the constructor for material damages that affect elements of completion or finishing of the works in Spain. 194

NOVEMBER & DECEMBER 2023

In Spain, actions to demand liability expire within two years of the damages occurring, as long as these appear within the aforementioned guarantee periods. Responsibility is considered to be jointly held by all agents involved in the construction process when the cause of the material damage cannot be identified, or the concurrence of faults is proven but without identifying the degree of intervention by each agent in the damage produced. In any event, the developer is liable to respond to the property purchasers for material damages arising from construction defects. If you have purchased a new home in Spain, or if you have made alterations to the property, and you discover any damage, our litigation team will be able to analyse your case and recommend the measures that can be adopted.
