FROM THE EDITOR > Over the past two issues we have offered a sumptuous aperitif of outdoor chic in the lead up to summer. Now, concluding this series of special features highlighting the attractions of Mediterranean Spain’s al fresco lifestyle and décor, we present a veritable smorgasbord of stunning styles and items for the patio. From chilling out in the shade on a “hanging chair” or “floating bed”, we then move inside the home for a look at latest bedroom trends – many inspired by the increasing popularity of boutique hotels. To add a touch of luminous vitality to our summer idylls, we luxuriate in the purity of white as a versatile and subtly sophisticated colour for any setting; and, for a distinctive view of design, step into the world of motoring and its innovative fusion with other conceptual realms. From Milan last issue to Madrid, we continue our road-trip around Europe’s premier home and decoration exhibitions with a visit to Casa Décor; and, further afield, travel to Sydney for the presentation of the Australian international Design Awards and to the Maldives for a glimpse of “the world’s first underwater spa treatment rooms”. Back closer to home, we preview some of the highlights of southern Spain’s summer cultural season; and, in our gourmet section, feature a tantalising menu of European and Asian specialities – and a multi-award-winning Spanish wine.

SmartSat-Tv

What’s really happening with UK TV Channels

Situated at Marbella Real (Local 21) on the Golden Mile, opposite the Villa Tiberio restaurant and a couple of doors up from Pan y Mermelada, SmartSat-Tv’s new showroom is due to open in mid-July. SmartSat-Tv is part of the Smart group of companies, which also publishes Smart Magazine, a free publication distributed around the Marbella area. In addition they have a new radio station, Smart-Fm, scheduled to commence broadcasting on 1 August and covering Marbella to Estepona on frequency 89.7. Announcing the new launches, SmartSat-Tv noted, “Many of you will already know that later this year, probably towards the end of August-early September, there will be major changes in the way we receive our favourite British television channels. Basically, it is more or less definite that we will lose reception of our BBC-ITV programs due to changes to the broadcast satellites. These channels will move to the new Astra 2E/F satellites, which have a spot beam focussed on the UK. Reception of this beam will be impossible on the Costa del Sol.” SmartSat-Tv has a range of solutions for individuals and communities to enable continued viewing of these channels. “All of the solutions offered and advertised to date, such as VPN and IPTV services, depend on a good internet connection with a constant download speed of around 3Mbps. SmartSat-Tv realised that many individual and community properties do not have suitable internet

14

connections and will need a different solution to enable continued reliable viewing of their favourite channels.” With that in mind, the company has announced it will have a licensed re-broadcast service available before the changes to the satellites are implemented. “Viewing will be achieved by the installation of a small satellite dish orientated to one of our transmission towers that are located on the mountain ranges inland from the coast. Around 40 television channels and several radio programs will be available and will include all the popular UK channels together with channels purchased in Spain such as Travel, Cartoon Network, Paramount and TCM, all with English audio.” SmartSat-Tv has partnered with several professional local satellite system/television installation companies to ensure the service is installed to a high level of customer satisfaction and that support is always available locally. Italian chef Adriano Visentin and his businesswoman wife Catherine Guilfoyle, from Kilkenny (Ireland), both gained extensive international experience in their respective fields working in the US in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Adriano trained as a chef in Milan and worked at various restaurants in Italy before moving to the US and refining his culinary schools at top fine dining establishments in Detroit, New York City, Los Angeles and Miami. Meanwhile, Catherine, a business studies major at college, worked as a bar and restaurant manager in Miami – where they met in 2000. They married in Sicily in 2007, moved back to Kilkenny, “fell in love” with Marbella while on holiday and – now the parents of two young children – moved to the Coast in April 2013. “We knew we wanted to bring our children up in such a beautiful city.” They found their “dream restaurant”, which also came with accommodation upstairs, and opened Casa Tua in June. “Things are going amazing,” they report. “Everyone has been great and helpful. We love it here.” C/ Ortiz de Molinillo 14. Tel. (+34) 951 712 227

Owned by the Spanish Myramar group and Henderson Global Investors, the joint venture has undertaken a series of key improvement initiatives with an investment of almost €12 million. These

include an agreement with the town hall to extend the complex’s commercial surface area, and plans to update the communal areas of the shopping centre, its image and its brand, “consolidating Parque Miramar as one of the biggest commercial and leisure areas on the Costa del Sol”. The work will also lead to the creation of approximately 150 jobs.

Palma Boat Show

Royal seal of approval for showpiece event

Crown Prince Felipe became the first member of the Spanish royal family in 30 years to attend the Palma International Boat Show, as the event made a resoundingly successful comeback to the Balearics. Around 37,000 visitors attended the 30th anniversary edition of the show, prompting director Chema Sans to note, “This was a completely different show from 2011. Most notably, it has grown a lot. The number of exhibitors was up 25 per cent and the sea-based exhibition area up 76 per cent, largely due to the crucial addition of a Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show – a venture that makes a good deal of sense for the Balearics… In total 47 superyachts over 24 metres

lined the quayside of Moll Vell marina and, based on this year’s runaway success, I envisage this expanding to 65 or more for 2014.” With the public and private sectors working together, the 2013 show was remodelled into a “nautical week”, with TapaMar gastronomy, the Gaastra PalmaVela regatta and the Maremostra Ocean Film Festival running alongside the more traditional boats, accessories and services. The intention was to promote the Balearic islands, in particular Palma, and confirm their strategic importance in tourism and yachting. www.boatshowpalma.com Arboretum Marbella

Concordia Gala

Great Gatsby glamour for a good cause Marbella Club Hotel’s Villa del Mar will be transformed into a 1920s “Great Gatsby” setting on 20 July for this year’s Concordia Gala. Supported by Tiffany & Co., the 2013 event includes a cocktail reception, dinner, music, dancing and a raffle with “stunning prizes”. Tickets for the gala cost €300 and all profits go to Concordia. Held for the past 17 years, the annual event is the main source of funds for the Concordia charity to run its day centre, helpline and outreach program. This important work is designed to support AIDS sufferers and their families and educate the general public to slow the spread of the disease. The charity is also looking for supporters to become members and donate a regular fee of €80 per year, although one-off donations are also welcome. www.concordiamarbella.com

Now celebrating its second anniversary, Arboretum Marbella is an environmental charity set up with the aim of creating a public park of native plants and trees as a site for conservation and education, and an attractive green space for people to enjoy. In May 2011 the town hall gave the project a 10-hectare stretch of wasteland behind Marbella’s bus station and, after tonnes of rubbish was cleared from the site, rocks removed and the soil turned and prepared for planting, volunteers, supporters, businesses and schools joined forces to plant more than 17,000 trees, plants and shrubs and create an organic vegetable garden. In addition to supporting the project as a volunteer or supporter, or making a monthly donation or giving a tree, people can sign up for an intensive 10-day Permaculture Design Course, an internationally recognised qualification, from 18 to 27 October (only 30 places are available). www.arboretum HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

How Air-Conditioning Works Home-owners sometimes have misconceptions about the air-conditioning process. According to Bodtec, “Most people think that air-conditioners lower the temperature in their homes simply by pumping cool air in. What’s really happening is the warm air from your house is being removed and cycled back in as cooler air. This cycle continues until your thermostat reaches the desired temperature. An air-conditioner is based on the same principle as a refrigerator. It uses the evaporation of a refrigerant to provide cooling.” And on cool days? “Your air-conditioning system is, of course, also capable of heating, and for this the refrigeration cycle is simply reversed. Even cold air contains a great deal of heat, which can be absorbed from the outside air and used to heat your home. These air-conditioners are called heat pumps.” Modern air-conditioners cool and heat the living and workspace with extremely low electricity costs thanks to the heat pump and inverter technique. Ecosense uses Passive Infra Red (PIR) technology to scan the room for occupancy. PIR will only detect body heat and consequently is not affected by items such as ceiling fans, curtains, etc. When no movement is detected it will send a signal to the air-conditioning unit to switch it off. Battery-operated and easy to install, Ecosense 2000 also has a comfort night sensor, enabling the A/C to be used (if required) throughout the hours of darkness. Urb. Nueva Atalaya,

Simply White POSITIVE, PROTECTIVE… AND PURE Including all the colours of the light spectrum, white adds a radiant and luminous look to any room. Its simple, almost reverential, touch acts as an ideal contrast to darker-coloured themes, and it is a key decorative colour for any cultural setting. In addition to light and purity, white decorating colours symbolise peace, serenity, elegance, freshness and a subtle sense of sophistication. A colour closely associated with clarity and the positive aspects of life, it is often used in meditation as it evokes protection and simplicity – as well as enhancing the spiritual and divine. In colour therapy, it is used to heal, renew and attract nobility, honesty, justice, courage – and love.

Design Fusion In recent years, automotive companies have moved into a broad spectrum of non-motoring spheres, working with other top designers on home décor, timepieces, luggage, jets, sound products, gaming PCs, bicycles… and art.

Potent Style

The Aston Martin Interiors collection – including a seats sofa with dormouse – is an exclusive collaboration between the famous automotive marquee and Italian furniture company Formitalia Luxury Group SpA.

Luxury Performance

Bentley Boutique and Schedoni of Italy combined their creative and technological expertise to develop a handmade range of luggage that fits effortlessly into the flagship Mulsanne model.

Holistic Innovation

Two BMW Group DesignWorksUSA projects originally presented at the Made4You: Design for Change exhibition in Vienna, and highlighting sustainable practices, showcased the ground-breaking Legacy 500 Executive Jet built by Brazilian company Embraer, and a range of earphones created with Sennheiser. Culinary Purity

Elegant Refinement

Prestigious Italian brands Maserati and Bulgari combined their creative forces to bring together precision, performance, style and elegance in the Octo Maserati special series model – powered by an haute horlogerie movement that represents a refined mechanical heart, the Calibre GG7800.

28

Sculpted from wild cherry and walnut woods, Peugeot’s French-made Chatel 21-centimetre salt and pepper mills add an earthy character to the kitchen. To ensure the purity of the precious woods used, Peugeot has kept Chatel’s silhouette simple and maintained any natural knots appearing in the wood bodies – ensuring no two mills are exactly alike.

Upscale Cycling

The Trekking Bike 29 is the latest high-quality addition to the Mercedes-Benz Bikes 2013 lineup. Like the Fitness Bike 29 unveiled last year, it has large wheels to provide greater traction, smoother running and better ride stability. The 2013 range also includes a mountain bike with full suspension and the versatile Kids’ Bike, which easily converts into a balance bike.

Boutique Trends > Artistic Statement

Originally raced at Le Mans, the M1 BMW Art Car was created by pop artist Andy Warhol to, in his own words “give a vivid depiction of speed. If a car is really fast, all contours and colours will become blurred.” The car, together with rare footage of his work, was presented by BMW at the inaugural fair of Paris Photo at LA’s Paramount Pictures Studios.

Vintage Chic

Created by Japanese artist Chicara Nagata and showcased at MB&F’s M.A.D. Gallery, these machines can be ridden on the road but they are also stunning works of art. Much more than mere modes of transport, they are the result of Chicara’s “wild imagination, combined with thousands of hours of meticulous craftsmanship carried out by hand”.

Extreme Emotion

Exquisite Craftsmanship

A state-of-the-art collection combining traditional elements in contemporary contexts, Bentley Home is a partnership with Club House Italia to develop furniture and homeware for residential, commercial and executive office interiors.

30

The M8 is a compact, high-performance and partially transparent gaming PC developed by BMW’s creative consultancy DesignWorksUSA for ASRock, one of the world’s leading motherboard manufacturers. Designed with versatility in mind, it can be placed in a vertical or horizontal position.

LOUNGING

Years ago terrace furniture was made out of heavy metal structures or natural wicker, which was often impractical and totally uninspiring. Today wicker is made of vinyl and resin, comes in a number of different weaves, and is UV-protected and extremely durable. There are several lightweight materials around these days that make furniture easy to manoeuvre and stack, with vinyl-coated fabrics such as “sling that dry off quickly when wet, making the perfect poolside companion. Design & Décor > Modular patio furniture is definitely the fashion, with easily stackable patio sets that save space and are aesthetically pleasing even when not being used – making the space look clean, tidy and uncluttered. Lounging has got more laidback but, at the same time, it is also more stylish. Terraces now seem to feature more beanbags, daybeds, large cushions and low-seated sofas and moulded chairs that rotate, tilt and are even suspended, putting the fun factor back into outdoor living.

Hanging chairs give the feeling of floating in mid-air, while covered daybeds provide a little private hideaway – offering more intimacy. Oversized daybeds are great for sharing with friends or family by the pool, making outdoor lounging a more social affair. Rotating chairs and beanbags allow you to relax exactly how you want to without the restrictions of a rigid chair structure. Of course, for the ultimate natural sleep aid at siesta time, nothing beats a hammock. Rocking is the same safe motion that we felt while gently floating in our mother’s womb, selected by nature for its calming effect and providing positive effects on the limbic, circulatory and other systems. www.hastens.com www.blackshawinteriordesign.com

One concept, the Trinity, is composed of a stainless steel tubular structure on which three hammocks – in a choice of woven or quilted – are suspended, as well as a small suspended teak table. It is weather-proof and looks stunning next to a pool or on a large patio area – its shape, materials and sense of lightness inspired by the sea and sailboats. The Eternity range, with its traditional shape and hexagonal roof, is reminiscent of a small garden gazebo; while the Infinity model explores unusual shapes for garden furniture. Then there is the Floating Bed. Its simple, stable and predictable motion feels totally different from other beds (including waterbeds). With the Omni-Pendulum Motion, the bed arcs slowly, gently and smoothly up as it swings, to hold you perfectly in place – without being tossed around. The arc cradles you, so you move with the bed, almost unaware of the motion. And, according to the manufacturers, you will not fall out: not even if the bed could do a 360-degree overhead loop!

However… let us not forget what is underfoot. On chillier nights, stone can be cold and uninviting. Decking, on the other hand, gives a contemporary Scandinavian look that is highly in vogue. The materials used these days have advanced from the standard wooden panelling of old and are now cleverly manufactured to avoid the problems that wood has always been susceptible to – that is, rotting and splitting in harsh sunlight. Nowadays you can buy decking that looks like wood but is actually a blend of wood and resin, requiring no maintenance – unlike traditional wood decking – and extremely long-lasting.

www.kettal.com

There are now many stylish weather-proof rugs and carpets to choose from that make an outdoor space immediately feel welcoming. Neutral earthy colours look elegant and meld into the natural surroundings, while bright flashes of colour make for a fun or dramatic look.

Design & Décor > THE PLAYFUL OUTDOORS

As outdoor living has become more laidback, it has become increasingly popular to introduce leisure items onto the terrace such as jacuzzis, juke boxes and pool tables. Jacuzzis now come in all shapes and sizes, with numerous settings that massage you in different ways. Pool tables have moved on in design and can really give the wow-factor to a terrace. There are now pool tables that are weather-resistant and come with LED lights – and can even double up as a dining table.

RELAXING IN THE SHADE

The importance of shade has led to many advancements in the world of design, with parasols now more durable and versatile than ever before. They come in more weather-resistant fabrics with better structural technology, allowing them to stand up to wind and giving easier manoeuvrability (or “tilt-ability”) to protect you from the sun all day long. Square-shaped parasols are increasingly popular and look more stylish than the traditional circular models. Gone are the days of fighting with a flimsy parasol that ends up in the bin at the end of the summer – the parasols of today are built to last. Shadesails and tents create large, elegantly-shaded areas… they can be mounted easily and are excellent protection for a children’s play or dining area, allowing you to use an outside area that you may not have been able to before due to its exposure to the intense sun. Shadesails also offer shade for your car and can make excellent carports.

All social outdoor gatherings just have to be accompanied by a barbecue! There are a huge variety of barbecues to choose from depending on your cooking requirements, with the option to grill, roast, fry or boil. There are barbecues that cook with gas burners and those that simply use a charcoal kettle, but those that don’t take you too much time or effort to assemble and cook great juicy food packed with barbecue taste are the most popular models on the market. Small portable barbecues are perfect for small gatherings, and are inexpensive and easy to clean. Simply placing them on a table, they don’t take up much space and can be removed easily out of sight when not in use. If your growing wine collection is getting out of hand, why not store it under the terrace? An outdoor garden wine cellar is a great way to keep the party going and the wine flowing without having to trek indoors each time to reach for another bottle of wine. www.spiralcellars.com.au www.kettal.com

THE BEAUTY OF THE FLAME

In the evenings when the temperature can drop, fire pits are a great accessory on your patio to keep you warm and create a cosy atmosphere (with some throws also kept on hand in case the wind really blows). There are many fire pits to choose from, with some designs doubling up as coffee tables when unlit – and others as wood storage areas. Bio-ethanol fires are very popular and cleaner than the old-fashioned wood burners… they don’t give off smoke and offer an environmentally friendly heating option for your terrace or patio area.

Design & Décor > Glass balustrades make a great alternative to brick walls. A patio with a brick wall can often block your view when you are seated on the terrace; glass balustrades offer protection from the wind while at the same time giving a better view out from your terrace. With the new EU pool safety regulations, glass pool surrounds are a must-buy. Usually made of toughened or laminated glass and fitted as a frameless or semiframeless system with self-latching gates, they offer maximum safety for children using the swimming pool area – and at the same time are pleasing to the eye.

www.andaluciaglass.com

VERSATILE GLASS

The glass curtain industry has been an extremely interesting arrival onto the interior design scene, allowing homeowners to have the flexibility of being able to enjoy views from their terrace no matter what the weather – and adding value to their property. In inclement weather you are protected by the floor-to-ceiling glass surrounds

www.andaluciaglass.com

but can enjoy the views as if you were sitting outside; and, when the weather is good, you can just pull the glass curtains back as if they were never there. When glass curtains hit the market, they were sometimes flimsy and awkward to open and close but now they have moved on dramatically, moving smoothly back and forth with strong seals that keep out the rain, wind and noise.

Candles add warmth and ambience to a living space. Candlelight can transform a patio into one of your home’s most enchanting areas. Bring a shimmer of candlelight to your patio by putting a group of candles on the dining table, protected by elegant candleholders. Consider sconces for an outside wall and lanterns to light up a walkway or boundary area. Some manufacturers have now developed candles that repel unwanted insects, such as flies and mosquitoes, away from entertaining areas – making them practical and a must-have for any outdoor living space.

Sleeping Patterns COOL, TRANQUIL… AND INVITING It has been said that the bedroom is the area in the house which is the biggest reflection of your personality, as it is where you retreat in order to feel safe and at peace. Not so long ago bedrooms were just areas to simply rest

48

your head but now sofas, televisions, fireplaces, work desks and even gyms have moved into the bedroom, making this living space an extremely multifaceted place to be.

HOTELS PROVIDE INSPIRATION

As our lives become increasingly hectic and stressful, the bedroom plays more of an important role. With this in mind, homeowners have been inspired by the growing number of boutique hotels that offer spa areas and neutrally decorated bedrooms. The bedroom is a “chill-out” area for both men and women, with décor that appeals to both sexes. Frills, delicate floral patterns, ornate headboards and doodads are now being replaced with non-gender-specific designs – with upholstered headboards often affixed to the wall itself. Footboards are not so common anymore, as TV sets and media centres become more popular installations at the end of the bed. Benches are placed at the end of the bed and look great when coordinated with the bedding or cushions. Large stacked pillows and cushions make a bed much more inviting, offering maximum comfort while sleeping or sitting up watching the television or reading. Throws are great to add another colour across a bed and can be changed easily to suit your mood. Flooring is usually hardwood or stone, with a large luxurious textured rug to add extra snugness underfoot. As we have now very much moved into the world of technology, Wi-Fi access for browsing the internet from your tablet in bed is a must! Mini refrigerators, dimmer switches for lamps, music systems and coffee machines are also accessories that are commonplace in hotels and are now very often seen in our bedrooms at home.

COLOUR TRENDS

This year’s Pantone colour is emerald green, but has it entered into the bedroom? According to Erika Woelfel, director of colour at Behr Paints, “There are two new colours entering the scene for décor in 2013: jewel tone green and vampy rose-red. These rich colours are riding in on a wave of renewed interest in luxury and opulence. They will feel especially appropriate for updates in the bedroom. “Clear, cool greens will replace yellow-based lime, pear and granny apple greens that we have seen for so long. Emerald and forest will dominate the darker side of the new green spectrum, while mint and jade will fall to the lighter side of the range. Sophisticated reds are the future of the warm colour

50

story in the bedroom. Rose red combined with burgundy and smoky amethyst creates a dramatic look for your space.” With the ever-increasing desire to reconnect with nature, many paint producers are producing hues that are rich in different coloured purples, greens and blues pertaining to the sea, while floral-inspired pinks and reds are reminiscent of the desert. For a bedroom makeover soft shades are popular, such as sand, sea mist green and eggshell blue, with Rose of Sharon coral-pink or Rio red extremely soughtafter for walls.

CLUTTER-FREE ZONE

Good-sized matching bedside tables on both sides of the bed are very important to store away your belongings that you need at arm’s length but not necessarily out on show. A trunk at the end of the bed acts as a great place for storage and also doubles-up as seat. Free-standing wardrobes and chest of drawers give individual character and can be easily moved around if you decide you want to change the layout of the room. A HEALTHY BED

The healthy-living trend for getting a good night’s sleep, coupled with our growing ageing population, has opened up a market for top-of-the-range mattresses. When choosing a mattress, there are a number of points to consider. First of all, size does matter! Most people change positions while sleeping and a small bed can stop you from moving freely and disturb your sleep. Standard mattress measurements are as follows: twin 99 x 190cm, X-long twin 99 x 203 cm, full 137 x 190cm, queen 153 x 203cm, king 198 x 203cm and California king 182 x 213cm. A standard innerspring mattress is a popular choice for many, and is cost-efficient. Memory foam mattresses have been developed more recently: originally manufactured to protect astronauts against g-forces, this material is heatsensitive and conforms to your body perfectly, though there are variations to the material and it can take a while to become accustomed to. Hästens, one of the most prestigious names in the bed market, offers a customised Vividus mattress. They are handmade and take between 140 and 160 hours to produce. The frame, made out of slowly growing arctic pine and oiled oak, takes a week to build. As well as cotton, wool, flax, down and 10-turn steel springs, each Vividus is made with hand-selected horsehairs. The hollow

52

horsehairs in the mattress ensure air-flow and reduce sweating. Hästens’ experience and high-quality artisanship, including the patented bedspring system, contribute to the beds’ impressive signature feel. Orthopaedists have been known to recommend particularly firm mattresses, but there are arguments against this view. According to a spokesman from the Stanford University Centre for Human Sleep Research, the best surface is purely subjective, which is why it is always an idea to try out the bed in the shop. A study published 10 years ago in the British medical journal Lancet stated that people who suffered pain in their lower back would benefit from a mediumto-firm mattress. It is thought by many experts that, if a mattress is too firm, the body might not be supported evenly and a person could suffer discomfort around the hips and shoulders. Extremely soft mattresses, on the other hand, could cause you to sink, making it hard to move around and causing tingling, numbness or aches. Alan Hedge, professor of ergonomics at Cornell University, argues that the best mattress supports the spine in its entirety, while at the same time allowing it to maintain its natural curve.

CASA DECOR IN MADRID Bold expression of futuristic trends

When Casa Decor held its first exhibition in 1992, the slogan chosen to promote the initiative reflected the organisation’s ambitious objectives. “What are 43 interior decorators doing locked up in a convent? Decoration creates miracles.” That inaugural exhibition was held in a former convent in Calle General Oraá in Madrid, and completely raised the bar on the “timid” world of decoration in the 1990s – at first causing astonishment but later generating great expectations.

The leading interior decorators of the time took part in the project, which involved decorating each room of the building. Over the past 20 years Casa Decor has became a platform for open and free expression, for interior designers, decorators, architects, landscapers and artists… professionals who have the opportunity of developing their projects at Casa Decor with no constraints. The exhibition’s singularity is based not only on its prestige as one of Europe’s premier decoration, design and architecture showcases, but also the widely varied and highly original options it highlights for those seeking inspiration for their home décor – comfortable, cosy, functional, imaginative and sustainable. An exclusive exhibition featuring top industry professionals and leading brands, Casa Decor takes over one of Madrid or Barcelona’s emblematic or historic buildings, carries out a significant rehabilitation and, for one month, presents 50 projects to a select public. The building chosen for the latest edition was the former home of the Brit-

ish Embassy for 40 years, in Calle Fernando El Santo in the exclusive suburb of Almagro. Built in 1966, its 3,900 square metres are circular shaped around an enormous central courtyard featuring an alabaster fountain. The exterior sheathing is grey granite with geometrically-lined windows that form a neoclassical border. As the projects featured here demonstrate in richly evocative and eclectic style, Casa Decor 2013 showcased trends in the vanguard of decoration, as well as innovative materials and pacesetting construction solutions – a veritable home of the future. www.casadecor.es

Blackmagic Design cinema camera

CUTTING-EDGE DESIGN IN AUSTRALIA A cinema-quality camera that makes film-making more affordable for everyday users has been named winner of the 2013 Australian international Design Award of the Year. Victorian-based creative video technology manufacturer Blackmagic Design won the top award for its Blackmagic Cinema Camera. Describing it as “a simple-to-use, smartly designed compact form factor at a fraction of the cost of existing professional video cameras”, the judges said its easy to understand interface “removes many of the obstacles holding back less techno-savvy filmmakers”. The camera is priced at around $3,000 (€2,140). According to Brandon Gien, managing director of Good Design Australia and chair of the Australian International Design Awards, 66 Australian and international products were awarded a coveted Design Award in recognition of design excellence. “We… noticed a trend towards high quality, highly technical products – usually with low production volumes – coming from Australian designers. This is a positive indication that local design firms and manufacturers consider design to be an important value-add in a product’s development cycle.” The 2013 awards attracted more than 250 entries ranging from cars to cameras, barbecues to baby strollers, kitchen tongs to computer tablets, personal accessories to portable radios, manufacturing equipment to homeware, and street furniture to scientific diagnostic equipment. Six panels of Australian and international design experts assessed each entry on form, function, quality, safety, sustainability, commerciality and innovation. www.gooddesignaustralia.com Images courtesy of the Australian International Design Awards, a division of Good Design Australia.

Looking to the Future in Barcelona

An exhibition of state-of-the-art bicycles was one of the highlights of the 2013 Barcelona Design Week. Also including a collection of objects created by Dutch designers starting from bicycle parts or inspired by them, the exhibition was organised by Yksi Expo with support from the Kingdom of the Netherlands and BCD. The overall BCN Design Week, held under the auspices of BCD (Barcelona Design Centre), was focused on design, innovation and business, bringing together companies and professionals from “any industry or productive service that uses knowledge and creativity as a driver of its business activity”. Under the slogan Design Vision 2050, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of BCD and held at a new facility, the Disseny Hub Barcelona, the 2013 Design Week was reinvented for its eighth edition “to find answers to the challenges expected to be faced in the coming decades through design”. www.barcelonadesignweek.es

Natural wonderland… Travellers seeking a paradisiacal setting for their holiday or getaway have no difficulty finding a vast and varied range of options around the world, from island havens to über-luxury nature resorts. Coming across something that breaks the clichéd mould, or offers a radically distinctive attraction, may require a little more effort. Huvafen Fushi is one exclusive holiday destination that has taken the concept to a new level, literally (in the true sense of the word). Located on the North Male Moll in the Maldives, and set within its own lagoon, the resort has just been re-designed and now offers what it describes as “the world’s first underwater spa treatment rooms”.

60

WITH AN UNDERWATER SPA

Above-water, the spa facility includes treatment rooms with glass floors, a steam room and gym, yoga sessions and a raw food restaurant. Below the sealine, the hard-core pampering begins – at least for those who don’t suffer from claustrophobia. Reached via an underwater passage and draped to reflect the visions through the glass, the submarine area features, in the words of managing company Per Aquum, “ethereal fabrics – mirroring oceanic kelp… Soft cushions evoking tactile versions of the corals and sponges… Pirouette of a ray just inches away… The slow rhythmic flow of the water, punctuated by the spectral colours of tropical fish”.

This almost surreal setting offers “sensual” signature treatments including LIME Light, Crystal Ritual and Turquoise Explosion. In addition to enjoying personalised “bespoke journeys” – for those seeking silky skin or a deeper personal transformation – guests can also simply chill-out in a relaxation room with adjustable temperature, smell and colour settings. Meanwhile, the overall resort comprises 44 “naturally-modern” bungalows with their own private pool, on land or over the water, or an even more nautical experience on a traditional Maldivian dhoni fitted with contemporary indulgences. As to be expected, Huvafen Fushi offers various chic dining options – includ-

ing private beach experiences and “1001 nights boudoir” – and, continuing the underwater theme, a wine cellar in a cave with thousands of bottles, “guided by global chefs”. Five-star floating luxury IN GIBRALTAR

Gibraltar has remained relatively immune from the crisis afflicting Spain, maintaining a flourishing economy. But it’s not all plain sailing. As Brian Stevendale, CEO for Sunborn Gibraltar, notes, “There is a gap in Gibraltar’s hotel offering for a genuine international-standard five-star establishment. The highest rating currently is four-star, which means that those looking for premium service, quality and facilities have to satisfy their needs across the border in Spain. Over 12 million people visit Gibraltar each year, but tend to arrive from Spain and spend the majority of their stay on the other side of the border.” Sunborn Gibraltar, a five-star grand yacht hotel that arrived in Gibraltar in June after a month-long journey by transportation vessel from its Malaysian shipyard, is aiming “to stem this flow and keep leisure and business travellers spending on the Rock”. The latest €150 million addition to Sunborn’s global floating hotel fleet, Sunborn Gibraltar has 189 guest rooms, 90 per cent of them with outdoor space and all with full-height glazing to capture the Mediterranean views. Seven storeys high and 142 metres long, it also includes a casino, spa and fitness centre, cock-

62

tail lounges, fine dining restaurants and a ballroom. Conferences and events are equally well catered for in a flexible meeting space for up to 540 delegates. The Sunborn is a self-contained floating vessel, but functions like a normal building when moored at Ocean Village Marina. Utility and waste connections to sewage, water and power lines operate, with an option for onboard generators to provide back-up electricity should the need arise. Sunborn Gibraltar will not be able to discharge waste into the water. Sunborn opened its first yacht hotel in the Finnish west coastal town of Naantali in 1998. Fifteen years later a 138-room yacht hotel, Sunborn Princess, is still located there. TRIP FILE Sunborn Gibraltar Five-star grand yacht hotel Ocean Villa Marina www.sunborngibraltar.com

KETTAL

TIMELESS COMMITMENT TO DESIGN AND INNOVATION Kettal Park Life collection by Jasper Morrison

A PACESETTING SPANISH DESIGNER AND MANUFACTURER OF ENDURING OUTDOOR FURNITURE, KETTAL OUTLETS AROUND THE WORLD (INCLUDING MARBELLA) OFFER A FULLY INTEGRATED AND PERSONALISED DECORATION SERVICE. When was Kettal set up and by whom? Kettal S.A., a family company, was founded by D. Manuel Alorda in 1966 as a distributor of imported garden furniture. Kettal subsequently began manufacturing its own furniture, becoming a pioneer at the time in the design and manufacture of this kind of furniture. Kettal has always been interested in design. Since its beginnings, the company has had an international outlook, with a firm and ongoing commitment to design and innovation. What are the basic principles behind Kettal? As a family company, the same initial values remain relevant today, family values such as a work culture, respect and common sense, making decisions for the medium and long-term, the company’s commitment to clients… What are Kettal’s main inspirations? Kettal’s objective is to create timeless, functional and expressive furniture, representative of contemporary culture and answering the new requirements of current lifestyles, based on a mix of creativity, personalisation, innovation and modern production. Kettal design is orientated towards structuring and shaping the ingredients to facilitate the creation of functional objects that satisfy the true needs of users. Kettal products are designed and manufactured with the idea of enduring over time. The importance of research, both scientific and technological, has always been a key aspect in the development of our products – and the brand’s highly innovative nature – enabling people to enjoy a high-quality product. Kettal is constantly researching new materials for the outdoors, including new treatments for traditional materials.

64

What are the latest trends in outdoor furniture? We try to avoid being “in fashion”, but we see that new projects are featuring a return to natural materials, the basic ones… metal, wood, stone, rope… Kettal collaborates with important designers. Tell us more about these collaborations. In 2006 we began working with Patricia Urquiola, who created the Kettal Maia collection, later chosen by Javier Mariscal for the Bombay Sapphire exhibition – one of the most iconic objects of the past 50 years, together with others such as the Vespa, iPod… This collection reinvented outdoor furniture, through a new braiding process, giving it an energetic and tri-dimensional aspect. Patricia provided our catalogue with a new era of garden furniture. After Patricia, who has now created three collections for Kettal, we have added national and international designers of great prestige to our catalogue, including Hella Jongerius, Emiliana Design Studio, Rodolfo Dordoni and Jasper Morrison, who has designed two collections for Kettal. It is very important for us that the designers share our company’s values. Kettal has its headquarters in central Barcelona and eight of its own outlets around the world: Marbella (a 2,000 square metre-plus shop between Marbella Club and Guadalpin), Barcelona, Tarragona, Paris, Cannes, London, Milan and Miami. Clients visiting these shops can check out Kettal’s latest collections of designer garden furniture as well as items from the group’s other brands, Triconfort and Hugonet. Summer in Spain BY CLODAGH AND DICK HANDSCOMBE

Way before having our own property in Spain, parts of many summers were spent at friends’ properties in La Carihuela and Montemar (Torremolinos), going back to before Benalmádena port was even started. Temperatures soared into the upper forties but features of old villa gardens that made it bearable still stick in the mind, and influenced the development of our own garden. • Shade is a must. The best is under spreading old trees with a thick canopy of overlapping leaves. The second best is a covered terrace stretching out from the house. Next is a gazebo covered with a thick growth of climbers; and lastly come umbrellas and sails. • If you don’t acclimatise in the early years in Spain by taking siestas in a hammock or on a sun bed in deep shade, rather than indoors with the air-conditioning set below 25 degrees centigrade, you will never enjoy Spanish summers. • In old villa gardens, pools were partly in shade so that you could truly cool off. Why are so many these days in full sun, with shade – if it exists – some way from the water? If you have this situation consider constructing an awning a metre wider than the pool, three metres wide and with the supports either side of the pool on wheels so that the awning can be moved along the pool to give shade where desired.

68

• Plant with drought-resistant plants that put down deep roots and which, within a few years, can be weaned off constant watering. That is why bougainvilleas, lantanas, hibiscus, aeoniums, false acacias, chorisias, palms, cordylines and yuccas were so popular. The plant lists in our book “Your Garden in Spain”, with botanical Spanish and English names, indicate the drought-resistance of some 400 plants. • The sound of running water has always been cooling. It can be provided by waterfalls at the end of pools, fountains and other water features. Today solar pumps have become less expensive so water features can be set up anywhere in the garden without the cost and safety issues associated with extending electricity supplies throughout the garden. • Old wicker garden furniture tended to be comfortable. Some modern designs using a wide range of materials are not. So test before you buy. Healthy Living In those days we did not expect the spread of urbanisations to kill off the availability of local produce and bury some of the most fertile soils of Spain under concrete, or be abandoned to await the next boom. For health reasons we started our

drive to self-sufficiency, experimenting with ways of achieving amazing yields from just a metre or two of raised beds, black builders buckets and growing tables… subjects covered in our Santana books “Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain”, “Growing Healthy Fruit in Spain” and “Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style”. More recently “Living Well from Our Garden – Mediterranean Style” has been self-published via Amazon Create Space so that it is easily available worldwide via Amazon Books. This explains how our gardening evolved in Spain over 25 years to enable healthy, inexpensive gastronomic eating to be experienced daily. By the way, if you want to grow vegetables through the summer give them shade. Even tomatoes don’t need to be in full sun to ripen. Once the sun becomes low, al fresco dinners are a great thing in Spain, with rather fewer flying insects to put up with compared with on a balmy evening in the UK. Like most we started by barbecuing but became bored with the smoky taste and found more pleasure in cooking in tagines purchased in the Marrakesh market, a Mexican oven and, the best of all, slow cooking with a solar cooker. Kits for various sizes are available from www.alsol.es.

Garden Trends By Juan Pedro Sacedon

Ecological Insect Control Thinking about summer insects, do spray if you have to with ecological products for they are now widely available and safer for people, pets and nature than most chemical sprays and powders. We remain amazed at the rows and rows of chemical insecticides and fungicides in garden centres and many agricultural cooperatives when most problems can be solved by not co-planting drought-resistant and thirsty plants, not over watering and feeding, using neem oil, garlic or ecological soap sprays as insecticides, and natural sulphur powder, not copper sulphate, and propolis as fungicides. By the way, lantana plants under windows help prevent flying insects from entering the house. Rubbing leaves over bare skin can be an inexpensive and effective mosquito repellent if you are bothered by them. We were advised to do this by our guide when on a trekking holiday in Reunion Island – it worked well. Several families of geckoes around the walls of the house are also invaluable. Plants on house walls and bunches of herbs hanging on the walls of covered terraces can help to attract and retain them. We hope these ideas help you enjoy the hottest months of the year.

Holistic gardeners and authors who are now enjoying their 30th summer in Spain, Clodagh and Dick Handscombe’s practical books can be obtained from high street and internet bookshops including Bookworld, Carrefour, Santana Books and Amazon UK and Spain. More information at: www.gardenspain.com

Summer is the time to look at our outer world, the best season to enjoy our gardens, courtyards and terraces. The sun provides energy, and the shade freshness, so let’s explore the best open areas around the house. In southern Spain, and especially so in the coastal areas, modern elements meld with Mediterranean and Arabic traditions. The latter is defined by clean areas with straight lines or basic curves, like circles, in order from architecture towards landscape. The minimalist garden has embraced this rooted style in an intimate dialogue between the outer and the inner home areas. Water elements such as fountains, waterfalls, basins and rivulets embody the soul of a patio. Terracotta pots in Andalucian style were formerly white-washed, but now they are painted in modern shades: silver, greens, greys, violet. Non-traditional shapes are enriched by the use of modern materials such as galvanised steel and red-iron. Even these days soil such as yellow sand (“albero”), rolling stones and gravel are bordered by hand-made bricks, but new materials are also used, including Corten steel and specially treated timber. Architectural plants with soft, hard, curly, lineal textures and silver-green leaves fulfil the com-

mon guidelines for a southern Spanish patio, complemented by Hispano-Arabic plantations such as bitter-orange trees (Citrus aurantium), mirths (Mirtus comunis) and False senecios (Centaurea pulcherrima), and merging with exotic spices including South African lilies (Crinum sp.), ginger lilies (Hedichium sp.) and New Zealand flax (Phormium tenax). For indoor purposes and façade treatments, a fashionable new trend is making strong inroads. Green walls, with vertical gardens, are an attractively luxurious option for a patio or building wall – as well as an indoor garden. Vertigo Gardens is a company that develops fully integrated projects, both design and construction, with a team comprising an architect, two flowering designers and a landscape designer. They carefully study each area and provide a design solution, featuring a modern combination of plantation and garden elements (stones, fountains, wood, etc.) to create a minimalist ambience. Bar d’o

GLITTERING STAR QUALITY Photos David Toms: www.davidtomsphotography.com

The recently opened Bar d’o restaurant, lounge and bar in Marbella oozes elegance and sophistication. The name “Bar d’o” refers to “gold”, which is particularly apt as the restaurant is located on Marbella’s famous The Golden Mile, and the owners’ admiration for Brigitte Bardot. The décor could be described as “classic chic” and is reminiscent of the fashionable bars and restaurants found in Madrid, with its clean lines, high ceiling and melange of cream, brown, beige and white that meld together under the gloriously fanciful chandeliers. The walls are adorned with portraits of some of the biggest sex symbols of all time, including the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Monica Bellucci and Brigitte Bardot, while the tables are laid with crisp white tablecloths and excellent-quality table and glassware. If you prefer to eat outside, at the restaurant entrance there is a delightful terrace that is shaded with huge canopies and surrounded by vegetation to give you privacy from the road. This chichi restaurant aims to offer customers a perfect balance between fine dining and a relaxed bar/lounge experience. Seasoned Marbellís might recognise some of the staff members who have worked in other highly-acclaimed eating establishments along the Coast and built-up fantastic reputations in their own specialist areas – with attention to detail of paramount importance to each of them.

74

Head chef Steve Dekerf has expertly put together a French-Belgian menu that uses high-quality ingredients cooked in a contemporary French style. The menu is varied, from lighter options to the wonderfully indulgent, with the likes of lobster, foie gras and home-made desserts that make you weak at the knees. (We highly recommend the banoffee pie and their chocolate fondant!). But you don’t have to enjoy Bar d’o just for its gastronomy: there is also an attractive bar and lounge area for a drink after work or a place to relax; and, if you feel in the mood, you can dance away the evening to some great upbeat tunes. There is a wide range of beverages to suit anyone’s tipple, with an impressive wine menu at reasonable prices. Some people say that the real test of a good restaurant or bar is the quality of its house wine, and Bar d’o certainly passes this test with flying colours. All in all, Bar d’o is a must-visit no matter what your budget or tastes, as it really does seem to cater for all. Open every day from 12am to 2am and until 3am at the weekends. ASIAN FUSION WITH PASSION

Photos David Toms: www.davidtomsphotography.com Tuk Tuk is a new Asian fusion restaurant in Nueva Andalucía serving Japanese, Thai… and all things eastern. Located next to the waterfall in Aloha Gardens, the setting couldn’t be more idyllic. When the owners of Tuk Tuk set about designing the restaurant, they wanted it to look decidedly contemporary, making optimum use of the natural elements around the restaurant: sunlight, vegetation and water. Even for those not dining outside, the floor-to-ceiling glass inside allows diners to fully appreciate the restaurant’s beautiful surroundings. The decoration has been well thought-out, with a comfortable lounge area at the entrance where you can savour an array of cocktails, spirits, wines and beers from their modern bar. In the dining area there are high and low tables, each one with its own individual faux capiz chandelier to make each table feel special. If al fresco dining is more your preference, there is ample seating outside, where you can dine next to the soothing waterfall under one of their authentic Thai parasols. The staff at Tuk Tuk are all extremely friendly, knowledgeable and attentive, and truly make you feel welcome. Philippine head chef Carl Kenneth Cabela has had

76

Número Uno… Finally The Roca brothers from Girona have spent seven years waiting their turn. Now, El Celler de Can Roca has ended the recent domination of fellow Spanish restaurateur Ferran Adrià’s elBulli (2006-2009) and Noma in Copenhagen (20010-2012), taking over top spot in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna. Ranked number two the past two years, El Celler de Can Roca has gained global renown for its combination of Catalan dishes and cutting-edge techniques, with Joan heading up the kitchen, Jordi the head pastry chef and Josep the head sommelier, in charge of front of house. Spain has two other establishments in the top-10, Mugaritz (fourth) and Arzak (eighth); and two more among the leading 50, Quique Dacosta (26th) and Asador Etxebarri (44th).

Wine Notes

From Santander to Penedés… via Hollywood By Ana Gil Peña

Mireia Torres was in Marbella this spring for the re-launch of the Jean Leon range of wines. Under the ever-careful tutelage of the Torres family, these excellent wines were first made by a hard-living Spaniard from Santander whose real name was Ceferino Carrión. He was born in 1928 and, growing up with no prospects, said adios to his family and crossed illegally into France via the Pyrenees. However, in a postworld war Paris there was limited work so he stowed away on a boat from Le Havre to New York. Within 24 hours of arriving he was washing dishes in the Rockefeller Centre for $4 a day. He later enlisted in the US army and on returning from Korea settled in Hollywood. His first job was in a restaurant owned by Frank Sinatra and Joe di Maggio. There he would later become friend and confidant of actors and actresses such as Natalie Wood, Grace Kelly, Lana Turner, Judy Garland and James Dean. Other regulars included Marilyn Monroe, Paul Newman, Humphrey Bogart, Warren Beatty, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Fred Astaire, Elizabeth Taylor, Marlon Brando, Garry Cooper, David Jansen and Robert Wagner. By 1962 Jean decided it was time to realise his lifelong ambition - to make wine. Back in Spain he found a vineyard in the Penedés region of Catalonia. Never one to spend a cent if he could spend a dollar, he started to build a winery in 1964 and hired one of Spain’s greatest oenologists, Jaume Rovira, with a simple instruction: make the best wine that can be produced in Spain.

The production process initiated 50 years ago has changed little. Pesticides and herbicides are never used, and the grapes are harvested bunch by bunch when they are ready, rather than all at once. The pressing of the grapes is slow and delicate, and only the first pressing is used to make wine. Unquestionably the flagship of the bodega is the Jean Leon Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva, which has two years in oak and two to three years in the bottle. In exceptional years a Gran Reserva is made, and this was the wine served at Ronald Reagan’s investiture in 1980. In 1993 Wine Magazine voted the 1983 vintage among the world’s best eight wines, and many other awards have been garnered over the years. Jean Leon is no longer with us, but his staff of 12 continues to make superb wines. If you thought Spanish red wines only come from Rioja and Ribera del Duero, you’re in for a pleasant surprise. The new 3055 range consists of a red, white and rosado, made organically. www.jeanleon.com

Boutique Tasting in Marbella Local dignitaries joined sommeliers, restaurant representatives and other industry professionals when the Jorge Ordoñez Group held a special wine tasting presentation at Hotel Puente Romano. The Málaga-based boutique winery group, founded in 2004 by Jorge Ordoñez, a prominent Spanish wine importer to the US, and run locally by his sister, general manager Victoria Ordoñez, organised the tasting in conjunction with its Málaga distributor, Compañía Malagueña de Vinos. The pacesetting company’s wines include a sweet Muscat, Málaga Nº2 Victoria, the only Spanish wine chosen to date for the final toast of the Nobel Prize dinner banquet (in Stockholm in December 2012). www.jorgeordonez.es HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Dental Care Marbella

THE INSIDE STORY ON TEETH WHITENING

Dr. Martha Laguilavo, of Dental Care in Laguna Village (Estepona), explains the advantages of teeth whitening

Teeth whitening is a process that lightens the shade of the enamel and dentine by removing discolouration. Having a whiter, brighter and younger looking smile adds to your self-confidence, making you look and feel more attractive – and almost anyone can benefit. The process is completely safe and does not affect the tooth enamel. There are many causes for teeth discolouration, with the most common include ageing and consumption of staining substances such as tobacco, coffee, tea, red wine, cola and curry. Discolouration may also be caused by tooth trauma, nerve degeneration or old restorations. The one-hour laser whitening treatment is carried out in the clinic and is ideal for those who want fast and effective results. The whitening gel is applied directly onto the teeth and a state-of the art laser is used to activate the gel, resulting in lighter and brighter teeth. You can expect to lift up to 10 shades in just one hour. If you prefer you can whiten your teeth in the privacy of your own home using our custom-made trays and whitening gel. This treatment uses a mild “oxygen releasing” gel and is simple and effective for those who want a more gradual and discreet whitening effect.

You simply apply the gel using the trays for 30 minutes per day. You can expect to lift three to five shades lighter in just five days. However, depending on the amount of discolouration you have you may choose to continue whitening for up to 10 days until you achieve the desired results. As for side-effects, some people experience sensitivity to hot and cold drinks but this will disappear within 24 to 48 hours of completing your treatment. Teeth whitening lasts, on average, two years, with people generally dropping two to three shades per year. However, you can maintain your colour for longer by topping up with home gel once a month, for just 30 minutes. Dental Care C.C. noted that gazpacho contains carotenes, vitamin C and polyphenols. The researchers concluded that the final balance of the bioactive elements of gazpacho and its salt content may make it heart-healthy and help people lower their blood pressure if they have elevated levels. The researchers also used statistical techniques of logistic regression to know to what extent the consumption of gazpacho can reduce the risk of suffering hypertension. They estimated that regular consumption of gazpacho could lower blood pressure levels in some individuals by as much 27 per cent. Nerve Stimulation to Prevent Migraine Headaches

Regular consumption of gazpacho may help combat high blood pressure, according to Spanish researchers. They analysed the effect of gazpacho consumption in 3,995 individuals in a study examining the effects of the Mediterranean diet on heart health. “Previous clinical and epidemiological studies associate the consumption of gazpacho’s main ingredients (tomato, cucumber, garlic, olive oil) with an arterial pressure reduction (lower blood pressure),” said researcher Alexander MedinaRemón, who is with the hospital clinic of Barcelona. “This new scientific study states for the first time that a regular consumption of gazpacho is as beneficial as the consumption of its ingredients individually. So, gazpacho can reduce hypertension.” The findings were unexpected because gazpacho contains salt. Despite this, the researchers found that blood pressure levels of gazpacho consumers were lower than the levels of non-consumers. The reason may be that bioactive elements of gazpacho counteract the effect of salt ingestion. The investigators

Wearing a nerve stimulator for 20 minutes a day could be a new option for migraine sufferers. The stimulator is placed on the forehead, and it delivers electrical stimulation to the supraorbital nerve. This new approach to preventing migraine headaches is virtually painless and could be an alternative to taking migraine headache medicines. Researchers in Belgium conducted a study with 67 people who had an average of four migraine attacks per month. All the subjects were followed for one month with no treatment. Then they received either the stimulation 20 minutes a day for three months or sham stimulation, where they wore the device but the stimulation given was at levels too low to have any effect. The researchers found that those individuals who received the stimulation had fewer days with migraine in the third month of treatment compared with the first month with no treatment. The number of days with migraine decreased from 6.9 to 4.8 per month. The number did not change for those who received the sham treatment. There were no reported side effects from the stimulation. The study also looked at the number of people who had 50 per cent or higher reduction in the number of days with migraine pain in a month. That number was 38 per cent for those who had the stimulation compared with 12 per cent of those who received the sham treatment. “These results are exciting, because the results were similar to those of drugs that are used to prevent migraine, but often those drugs have many side effects for people, and frequently the side effects are bad enough that people decide to quit taking the drug,” said study investigator Dr. Jean Schoenen, who is with Liège University in Belgium.

“REVOLUTIONARY” THERAPY FOR DYSLEXIA Psychologist Monika Baumgartner has just launched an English version of the Dyslexia Rescue Box, a therapy designed to treat the problems associated with dyslexia in the home or at school – within just three months. The therapy was developed by Monika Baumgartner to treat her son, who suffered from dyslexia. After 10 years of psychological and neuropsychological research and development, she produced a system designed to improve the health, hearing and concentration problems associated with dyslexia. Her son was the first success story: having followed the Dyslexia Rescue Box therapy he overcame his dyslexia and is currently attending university, which – she says – would have been unthinkable prior to the therapy. According to Monika Baumgartner, the therapy is “unique in every way”, using a patented Sonido M-Therapy sound box, CDs, written exercises, therapy cards, puzzles, poetry and songs.

88

“Unlike traditional treatments it is not necessary to attend clinics as it is suitable for home or in the classroom. Following a program of sound and rhythm therapy for just one hour each day, dyslexics will learn to filter sound, thereby overcoming their underlying hearing problems in just three months.” She notes that not many people are aware that dyslexia is not a behavioural problem. “It is a health condition that prevents sufferers from hearing full sentences and filtering noises, which leads to an intolerance to every day noises, resulting in poor concentration, reading and spelling, and disruptive and unsociable behaviour.” More information: Tel. A Classic Sense of Style

FROM URBAN SHOWCASES TO THE SCENIC VILLAGES AND ARDUOUS MOUNTAIN PASSES OF EUROPE… THE SEASON OF CLASSIC CAR RALLIES, SHOWS AND PRESENTATIONS HAS BEEN IN TOP GEAR OVER SPRING.

Loving Restorations

The newly-launched F-Type (featured in the last issue of Home & Lifestyle) has been gaining the headlines for Jaguar this year but at the Historics specialist classic car auction it was the turn of a star of the past. Described by Enzo Ferrari as the most beautiful car in the world when unveiled in 1961, the E-Type was also briefly the world’s fastest production car. A meticulously restored and rare Series One 1967 all-black model was one of over 100 fine classics that went under the hammer at this year’s June auction at Brooklands. Also offered for sale was a mighty 14.5-litre 1918 LaFrance Open Speedster and a Triumph 4100 HJ, recognised in a former guise from its years of service as a police car. www.historics.co.uk

Vintage Girl Power

The top 10 finishers in the Flying Scotsman Rally featured four Bentleys and three Talbot 105 Alpines, with an Alfa Romeo 6C, 1500cc Riley 12/4 and Lagonda M45R completing the list. Gareth Burnett and Jeremy Haylock brought their 1934 Talbot 105 across the finish line just seven seconds ahead of Sue Shoosmith and Trina Hartley, in what was believed to be the highest position for any all-female crew on an international historic rally. www.endurorally.com

Gruelling Endurance

As Home & Lifestyle was going to press 47 Silver Ghosts, dating from 1909 to 1926, were on the last legs of their journey from Vienna – through the spectacular, challenging and sometimes hazardous peaks of Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and Italy – to re-enact the original Alpine Rally in 1913. www.20-ghost.org

Elegant History

Held for the first time in 1929, the latest edition of the Concurso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este – held under the patronage of the BMW Group – brought together 50 cars and 35 motorcycles from widely varying eras, and thousands of enthusiasts, on the shores of Italy’s Lake Como. The jury awarded the “best of show” trophy to a Bugatti 57SC Atlantic from 1938, while the concept cars and prototypes class was headed by an Alfa Romeo Disco Volante by Touring. www.concursodeleganzavilladeste.com

Epic Enthusiasm

Argentina’s Juan Tonconogy and Guillermo Berisso won the 31st re-enactment of “the most beautiful race in the world”, driving a 1927 Bugatti T40, but more than 400 other keen and determined crews joined them at the Brescia finishing line of the 2013 Mille Miglia. Among the magnificent machines featured in the race were a supercharged “Blower” Bentley (1930s Le Mans race car), BMW 328 from 1938 and Bugatti Type 3. www.1000miglia.it

ART & CULTURE > Red Penguin Gallery

From avant-garde masters to contemporary eroticism

The latest exhibition at the Red Penguin Art Gallery in Marbella features stunning photographs by Marc Lagrange, and a selection of works from great masters of modern art, the CoBrA group, and rising stars in the contemporary art world. Showcasing a wide spectrum of artistic medium, including paintings, sculptures, videos and photography, “”The Beautiful and the Best” will run throughout July. In addition to being able to view Belgian artist Lagrange’s evocative and sensual photographs, the “Beautiful” (pictured here), visitors will also be able take away a copy of his new coffee table book “Diamonds and Pearls”. Opinion

A coolhunter’s view of the future For more than 20 years now the contemporary art market has been stuck in a crisis, a word that means “change”. This should come as no surprise if we take into account the atrocities committed by everyone. Eulogising artists and painters who aren’t worth the canvas they work on… It was very easy and simple: unable to secure church or royal patronage, all you needed to become a highly valued artist was money. The system involved buying a gallery, exhibiting work and going to fairs and markets, with no screening… it was surreal. Bearing in mind that every family has one or two members dedicated to “art”… The world collapsed under the strain of paintings that the most knowledgeable declared were the work of their children – “they could have done it better”. Meanwhile, collectors concentrated on buying old works, their value safe, and suitably representative, because foolish, no-one is foolish. Any human being with a minimum dose of artistic sense and sensitivity is just as much a slave to their emotions as to their reference points. We are proposing the establishment of a committee of experts charged with accrediting someone as an “artist”, “painter”, “collagist”, ”designer”, etc. – the same as with Parisian haute couture, for example. The first, and indispensable, requisite would be that the artist had “finished” at least 250 works, and put them on the market, because something needs to be done, in addition to understanding that talent is not enough without adequate promotion, before the end of your stock draws near. The future is the present. K.C.B. Visit the virtual museum at cintia.com; with sales at MC Collection at Marbella Club and the Kristina Szekely office in Puerto Banús.

The “Best” comprises modern art work by the CoBrA, an avant-garde movement that worked as a group from 1948 to 1951; and a selection of masterpieces by artists Karel Appel, Corneille and Walasse Ting from the Meulensteen Art Collection of the Danubiana/Meulensteen Contemporary Museum in Bratislava. Extending into August, Red Penguin’s Summer Festival will include several other exhibitions, workshops, mobile exhibitions and art projects. www.redpenguinartgallery.com Making Scents

Museo Picasso Málaga

Artistic insight into celebrated painter’s family life Málaga’s Picasso Museum continues its 10th anniversary celebrations with a new exhibition that pays tribute to heirs and friends of the artist who have supported the museum over the years. Announcing the launch of the exhibition, “Picasso: Family Album”, the museum noted that, from his childhood in Málaga to his final years in the south of France, kinship was a constant source of inspiration for Picasso, and his own family circle was thus portrayed in his work. “From the academic portraits of his parents and his sister Lola, to the rather more expressive ones of his partners and children, the artist produced pictures in which he projected his talent and his ability to go beyond the boundaries of classic expression.

“Picasso: Family Album brings together a significant gallery of family figures, revealing how important a creative asset the notion of family was for Picasso. It also enables visitors to observe the influence of photography on his work, admire his capacity for synthesis in order to achieve great expressivity with a minimum of lines, and consider how, with Cubism, multiple viewpoints were incorporated into a single face.” The exhibition is on show until 6 October. During July and August, the museum, which is also currently showing Dennis Hopper: On the Road (until 29 September), is open every day from 10am to 8pm – extended to 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays. (The rest of the year, the museum is closed on Mondays.) www.mpicassom.org

Arte Marbella

Bringing art and music to the people

Marbella took the cultural centre-stage in June with the fifth edition of the Internacional Festival de Arte, a three-day outdoor art event combining art with a programme of live jazz and classical music. Speaking at the official launch of the event, also attended by Marbella councillor for tourism José Luis Hernández, the festival’s president, Caroline Bowley, stressed the importance of these types of cultural events for Marbella’s continued prosperity. “Arte Marbella is the only event of its type in Spain and brings visitors from all around the world to Marbella, promoting the town as a cultural destination and broadening its appeal. It allows people of all ages, nationalities and interests to experience art outside the gallery and makes it affordable for people to buy. We believe that bringing art to the people is a really important responsibility and so many people get to experience these works who would not visit a gallery.” She added that, in order to secure the festival’s financial security, “we need businesses to pledge their support for coming years, or the festival will die”. Yanela Brooks

Debut single from The Voice star Marbella singer Yanela Brooks, one of the stars of the first edition of La Voz (Spain’s version of The Voice), has released her first single, “Mondays”. A popular performer at glamorous local galas and other top venues and fiestas around Spain, Cuban-born Yanela had previously published two albums independently before gaining national fame on the TV show, where her professionalism and talent (she is also an accomplished pianist and composer) captivated Latin Grammy winning coach David Bisbal. Known locally as Marbella’s diva of disco and soul, she cites Tina Turner, Chaka Khan and George Benson as some of her main influences – classic sounds reflected in the new single. www.yanelabrooks.com

Gibraltar Fine Arts

New committee with high aims An extraordinary general meeting of The Gibraltar Fine Arts Association was held in June with the main objective of selecting a new committee “in charge of taking the association, and local art in general, to new heights”. The society aims to be the representative body in Gibraltar of people engaged in fine arts and to promote and encourage fine arts and the appreciation of fine arts. It also plans to take a major role in the organisation of fine arts exhibitions, and foster links with artists and fine arts associations in and from other countries, as well as businesses, educational establishments and the general public. Finally, the association is keen to develop a stronger relationship with the government, working closely with the Ministry of Culture “to ensure that art in Gibraltar is given the importance and position in our society it truly merits”. The difficult economic situation that Spain is experiencing has resulted in intensive changes in corporate tax legislation for 2012. Here we offer a brief summary of these significant amendments, which should be taken into account when filing corporate tax for 2012, on 25 July 2013. The Royal Law Decree (Real Decreto Ley) 12/2012 of 30 March provided the basis of these amendments through its revised text for Article 20 of Corporate Tax Law, which has introduced general limitations. With respect to the deduction of financial expenses, this has been limited to 30 per cent of the company’s operative profit, as long as the net financial expenses exceed €1 million. As a consequence, a specific temporarily adjustment has to be made, which allows for excessive financial expenses to be tax deductible from future corporate profits. Another major change is the limitation of deductions of goodwill (Fondo de Comercio) regulated in Article 12.6 and mergers’ goodwill regulated in Article 89.3, with both limited to one per cent per annum of the calculated deductible base. Furthermore, the allowed deduction in corporate tax for 2012, for those activities that Article 44 refers to, has changed from 35 to 25 per cent and 60 to 50 per cent. This is also applicable to companies that decide to re-invest their extraordinary profits. As compensation for the lower percentages, the period of application of these allowances has been increased. For both, activities as per Article 44 and re-investments of extraordinary profits, the period has been changed from 10 to 15 years and 15 to 18 years for any pending balances as at the beginning of the 2012 financial year. There are also changes with respect to freedom of depreciation of assets, which has been abolished. On the other hand, Royal Decree Law 18/2012 introduced

an exemption of 50 per cent of the profits from urban real estate sale transactions that took place between 12 May and 31 December 2012. It is also important to remember that Law 16/2012 grants companies the possibility of updating their balance sheets, resulting in fiscal optimisation. In addition, we should bear in mind that the corporate tax rate on profits of micro companies (defined as companies with net sales from core business less than €5 million and with an average employed workforce during the year of fewer than 25 employees) is 20 per cent for profit up to €300,000 and the rest is taxed at 25 per cent, provided they have maintained or increased their workforce during 2012. There are also allowances for those companies that invested in professional training courses for their employees: i.e. one per cent of the investment deductible. This deduction should be reduced by 65 per cent of the amount of subsidy received, in the event the company obtained a subsidy related to training courses. Although the changes introduced by Law 12/2012 are aimed at increasing government income to combat the current economic downturn in the country, companies that are properly advised can still minimise their tax charge by correctly applying all allowances and taking advantage of other available measures that can save them money. THE FINAL WORD. SPECIALIST ADVICE >

Has anything really changed?

Well, according to two very senior figures in the eurozone the answer is, yes. It seems we could be at the end of the eurozone crisis. Statements like this are intended to lift our spirits. However, data which is factual does not and, unfortunately, the data suggests the eurozone’s collective economy shrank for six straight quarters and unemployment hit 12.2 per cent, which is the highest since the euro was formed in 1999. Declining investment and exports were the main drivers behind the currency bloc’s continued contraction. But there was some good news: May’s PMI rose to 47.7, up from 46.9, driven by an improving manufacturing sector. Germany managed to squeeze into expansionary territory with a PMI reading of 50.2. While the Spanish downturn eased slightly, its PMI of 47.2 was higher than it has been for almost two years.. After a cut of 25 bps in May, the ECB kept rates on hold at a record-low of 0.5 per cent at its June meeting. Despite recent speculation, President Draghi held back on further stimulus for now as, interestingly, the ECB still expects a recovery to take place later in the year. Spain also has a decision to make and that is, does it ask for an extension of a further 12 months on the bailout fund available to it? Remember, of the €100 billion or so available, Spain has only used €41 billion to recapitalise its banks and must make a decision to apply for the extension pretty soon. While all these events have been happening, the cost of government debt unfortunately has been creeping upwards and we have seen Italian and Spanish 10-year bond yields moving back towards the five per cent figure. The good news is there is a backstop and that is the ECB which, via the OMT, has pledged to support government debt. The bad news is the German constitutional court is challenging its legitimacy; we expect a decision sometime in the coming month or so. In the UK, Mervyn King, governor of the Bank of England, has bowed out and was not able to convince his members to vote in favour of switching on the printing press again, so no further QE. The interest rate was also held so the focus will now be on his successor Mark Carney, who was to take up his new post on 1 July. With the recent good weather in the UK there was also a bounce for the UK economy. At last business survey data showed that activity expanded at

the fastest rate in more than a year in both the manufacturing and services sectors. The manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rose to 51.3, from 50.2 in April. And even the construction sector grew for the first time since last October. Even better news was that the services sector, which accounts for around 70 per cent of GDP, did manage to exceed expectations and hit 54.9, growing at its fastest pace for three years. House prices also showed an increase of 0.4 per cent in May as optimism filters through. Banks, however, are still in the news. We heard the Cooperative Bank will need some support and has stopped lending to SMEs, and the PPI selling, or missselling, situation still rumbles on. We can expect to hear banks making larger provisions if a time deadline is not agreed. Hey, don’t worry because it seems happier days are here again in the States and the old saying is, when the US sneezes the rest catch a cold – so maybe a recovery is in sight. The housing market in the US has shown house prices were up 11 per cent year on year and, with the banking sector reporting a massive 16 per cent rise in net income for the last 12 months, you can understand why consumer confidence is moving forward. Mr Bernanke has been very firm in his approach to buying mortgage-backed securities, thereby adding to US confidence. The US economy also added 175,000 jobs in May, just ahead of the 163,000 expected. Wouldn’t we like to see this number of jobs added across the zone? Finally, Latvia becomes the latest country to join the euro – formally on 1 January 2014 – so look out from that date for a “mythical” character called Milda appearing on your coins.
