An enthralling end to the 2022/23 season, as the Hollywoodbets Dolphins Ladies came agonizingly close to claim the CSA Women’s Provincial One-Day Cup. Needing a bonus point win in their final encounter between Six Gun Grill Route Badgers, the Hollywoodbets Dolphins Ladies unfortunately finished with a 55 run loss to close the season as runners up.

Captain, Nondumiso Shangase is proud of the team’s efforts this season and while many lessons were learnt, the team achieved what they originally set out to do, adding that “We set a goal at the beginning of the season that we wanted to finish in the top three”

Hollywoodbets Dolphins enjoyed a strong season all round to secure their place in the CSA Top 6 for the 2023/24 season. The most memorable performance this season is the 9 wicket win over the DP Lions in Johannesburg The Hollywoodbets Dolphins Ladies dismissed the DP Lions for 84 in 27 2 overs thanks to the exceptional bowling from Nonkulukelo Mlaba (7 2-13-3) and Jade De Figueiredo (6-24-3). The Hollywoodbets Dolphins Ladies chased the target in just 18.1 wickets to win by 9 wickets which remains the largest victory by wickets in the tournament.

Jade De Figueiredo finished the CSA Women’s Provincial One-Day as the Hollywoodbets Dolphins Ladies highest wicket-taker and the 4th highest wicket-taker in South Africa. Nondumiso Shangase concluded the tournament as the leading run scorer for the Hollywoodbets Dolphins and the 10th highest run scorer in South Africa.

The Hollywoodbets Dolphins Ladies showed a fighting spirit in the CSA Women’s Provincial T20 Competition to finish 4th after a shaky start. Nondumiso Shangase finished the tournament as the highest wicket-taker for the Hollywoodbets Dolphins and the 2nd highest wicket-taker in the country. Alex Candler ended the tournament as the highest run scorer for the Hollywoodbets Dolphins and 2nd in the country Candler blazed her way to 236 runs which included her sensational 95* off just 54 balls against South Western Districts Women at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium.

Head Coach, Angelique Taai expressed her pride for the team’s effort this season: “I am extremely proud of this team who have shown great skill and heart throughout the season We started the season with the aim to finish in the top 3 and to secure a place in the CSA Top 6. While we continue to work on our T20 game, we are happy to have reached our target in the One Day format.”

The KZNCU Umpires started a new journey from September 2022, introducing two new subcommittees: a Training Committee and an Appointments Committee. After hosting two successful Level 1 umpiring courses, a third is being planned.

Level 1 Umpires Course - Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium

On 15 November 2022, KZNCU together with the KZN Department of Sports, Arts & Culture as well as eThekwini Municipality and Metros, hosted a Umpire’s level 1 course at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium The course was presented by Sbongakonke Shabangu (CSA accredited umpires trainer), Muhammed Jooma (CSA accredited umpires trainer) and Kershan Moodley (KZNCU umpires administrator).

The course featured 5 guest speakers, who gave a discourse on umpiring. The guest speakers present were, Nishaan Sewkumar (KZN Department of Sports, Arts and Culture), Babalo Gcuma (CSA National First-Class Umpire as well as CSA Umpires Umpire of the year), Mthokozisi Shezi (Former Proteas and Hollywoodbets Dolphins Player and current umpire), Sagren Naidoo (Former Cricket South Africa Match Referee) and Kugan Subrayan (President of eThekwini Metro Cricket Union).

The course was highly successful having 13 candidates completing the exam and all 13 passed.

Level 1 Umpires Course - Kwandengezi

The KZN Umpires training committee took great strides to introduce umpiring to the greater KZN region. The course was held on 18 November 2022 at Botate Primary School in Kwadengezi. A total of 9 candidates attended the course, and currently all 9 are actively umpiring within the KZNCU leagues. The course was presented by Sbongakonke Shabangu and assisted by Sandile Dube This was a major success in our training and recruitment process as we currently have umpires officiating in the KZNCU Castle Women’s Premier and Promotion Leagues.

Level 2 Umpires Course - Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium

The KZN Umpires training committee hosted a level 2 umpires’ course on 27 and 28 February 2023. Active umpires within the KZNCU Castle Club leagues, who have a Level 1 qualification, attended. This course was a huge stepping stone for Sbongakonke Shabangu and Kershan Moodley, as it was the first level 2 course they have presented in their respective positions.

A total of 7 candidates entered the course and the pass rate was 93%

Level 1 Scorers Course - Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium

On 11 March 2023 the KZN Cricket Scorers Association held a refresher course for the Premier League Club scorers at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium. The seminar covered the Premier League playing conditions, the way bonus points are calculated at various tournaments, as well as the application of the Duckworth-Lewis-Sterne method to rain affected matches.

Injuredor

There there are few more “touchy” subjects among coaches than dealing with an “injured” or “hurt” player In professional environments a Head Coach may have a group of trusted advisors – be that Biokineticists, Physiotherapists and masseurs who can provide clarity on any particular injury and the rest and recovery needed for full rehabilitation. In more amateur environments this objectivity can quickly turn to subjectivity as the player controls his desire to play or not play as well as the less qualified coach making his mind up of what he determines is fit or unfit to play Here are some guidelines to consider to make this period as valuable and beneficial for all parties.

I recently read a book by Rob Roy named The Navy Seal Art of War. As the title suggests he is a former Navy Seal and now leadership consultant As the commander of Navy Seal Team 5 and being challenged in as rugged and challenging environments as is humanly possible he provides insight into this particular subject. His theory – although very simple – is are you injured or are you hurt? These two words are not to be confused. The distinction between the two is if you injured –“you are out”, if you are hurting –“you play on”.

His advice on the subject, “If you are hurting, you feel pain, you are uncomfortable, the difference is that you can still perform if you are hurt. You can play through the pain, walk it off, get back up, keep going”. Injured then means you are “done, out, sidelined. You need treatment and time to heal in order to successfully recover”. His final comment on the subject, “If you quit every time you feel pain you will never succeed at anything, but if you are truly injured and you have to leave the arena, you are someone who went down fighting.”

So how do you manage these two spaces effectively enough in order to make the best possible decision for the individual and the team?

Drawing a distinction between the two with the players prior to the season is a very important factor. Once a player buys in to the definition of each of these he can then make a much more informed decision as to which category he fits and thus so can the coach. This provides clarity in both parties mind and provides congruence and informed decision making.

11

CORNER Hurt?

If “hurt”, the player knows he can still make a performance despite the external factors Flashbacks to some of the world’s greatest ever innings such as Steve Waugh’s broken ribs in the West Indies, Dean Jones’s dehydration, and more recently Graeme Smith’s broken hand and Michael Clarkes barrage in Centurion a few seasons ago show what is capable of a “hurt” player What these players do successfully is mentally engage their resilience and bring their best to the situation, and in doing so gain respect in and out of the team

The “injured” player must seek professional help as soon as is possible. This can not only bring a quicker recovery but also clarity on what the problem exactly is to avoid speculation which often takes hold during this period It is the professionals opinion that one must take into consideration and once a course of action has been prescribed it can then be planned with the coach and the player. In ideal situations specialists in the area of concern should be consulted. For example, if a fast bowler is struggling with a back injury it is best to see someone who has complete understanding of the region to provide his diagnosis and expertise.

Having said this, there have been many occasions recently where specific players have received 3 completely differing opinions from professionals sliding on the scale of “Manage the injury but continue to play – to take a rest for a few weeks to recover – to completely out and surgery must be done immediately”. This paints a blurry picture for the athlete and the coach and ultimately puts all parties in a compromised position

Speaking to some experts in the field on this they agree with Rob Roy’s assessment and urge players to know the distinct difference between hurt and injury. A fast bowler is often not at 100 percent each time he takes the field but can perform through niggles and smart load management If there is something more serious at play, then take a cautious approach as this can be career affecting in the short and long term.

In conclusion, the advice given is to get your athlete to know himself and develop awareness of his body to diagnose the hurt or injury as accurately as possible and on the different side of the same coin, as a coach, know your athlete, his personality, his defaults and characteristics as well as his body too in order to achieve the best possible results both presently and in the future.
