KESHAV MAHARAJ CATCH UP When we see Keshav Maharaj take the field, we know he is going to give his 100% whilst playing with passion. During a celebration of a wicket in a test match for the Proteas, Keshav ruptured his Achilles tendon, leading to a lengthy lay off. We caught up with him to see how he is doing and give you a small insight into his life.
Can you update us on your injury and road to recovery? I went for surgery 4 weeks ago and I am unsure of the time frame for my lay-off, I just know it will be a lengthy period. How have you been keeping busy during a very different off-season for you? I have been focused on my rehab and a lot of gym work. Spending a lot of time at home and with family, which is something I am not use to. In the last 3 years, I was hardly home with the amount of cricket I played. Can you share your thoughts on the Hollywoodbets Dolphins season? I don't think we started the season in the best way, but loved the fact that we ended it on a high. Winning the CSA 4-Day cup was amazing and I think is one of the most prestigious trophies to win in the Domestic circuit. The competition brings out the best in players, showing relentlessness and the ability to step up to the plate when needed. It is 4 days of high intensity and coming out on top really is a great feeling. What is your Hollywoodbets Dolphins season highlight? If I have to choose, I would say my highlight would be the win against the Cobras in the CSA 4Day Cup. We chased a large score, on the last day. History did not favour us chasing 272 at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium, on a tricky wicket and that's why it is my personal highlight. Can you share your season highlight with the Proteas? Getting to a half century in Sydney and helping the team draw the test match against Australia. In the process, we avoided a whitewash of the series. What is your Pre-Match routine? If we have an evening game the next day, I am in bed by 10pm and up the next day before 7:30am, I ensure I get at least 8 hours of sleep, if not more. Get in my breakfast which is cornflakes, banana chips, walnuts and honey or a low-carb muesli and yoghurt with coffee and water. A quick gym visit to do activations and then have a pre-match meal, which is normally Nandos' spicy rice with chicken strips and extra chicken breasts with feta or halloumi cheese. I focus on getting a lot of fluids in during that time.

You recently celebrated your 1st wedding anniversary. How has married life been? Any advice? Married life has been fun and exciting. I think living with someone before you marry them opens your mind and also helps you to compromise on certain things. I found my soul mate, so it's one of my greatest blessings. My advice would be, don't change your routine because you have a new title. It's important to still do the things you use to do together before marriage. What is your favourite dinner spot? This is a tough one! I do enjoy Big Mouth in Johanesburg. I think it's an amazing sushi spot and I love seafood. Locally, Chef's Table- I know it's a bit out there, but I love the flavours and tastes that come with a visit. What is your favourite karaokee song? Haha, I am an amazing singer. I don't have a favorite song- I just go with the flow and try to sing along. What is your favourite activity / hobby other than cricket? I love cooking, I think it's a great way for me to zone out and relax. Golf is up there too, I enjoy a day out on the range and to spend it with mates. Do you have an all time favourite TV show? I am currently hooked on The Fixer, it's right up my genre ally with scandal and Presidential drama. What is your ultimate holiday destination? I thoroughly enjoyed the Maldives, but I have to go with the Seychelles. It was where we went after our engagement, so it holds a lot of sentimental value. What is your earliest cricketing memory? Receiving my first cricket bat from my Dad when I was 5. It made me realize that there are stepping stones and milestones along the way but receiving these small gifts and reminders from your parents motivates you even more.

Lindelani finish as runners up at inaugural CSA Club Championship Lindelani CC were the winners of the KZNCU Castle Women's Premier league for the 2022/2023 season. This saw them become the KZN representative at the inaugural CSA Club Championship, which was held in Potchefstroom last month. We asked head coach, Sandile Caluza, to share his thoughts on the tournament and how he felt his team did after losing only 1 match and finishing the tournament as runners up. "We were excited to have been the first representatives of our beautiful province to partake in the biggest women's club championship by CSA. We also used the opportunity to measure the other teams strengths and weaknesses in the process. The competition was at times overwhelming for our youngsters as they struggled to adjust in some areas against older and more experienced players, but they also redeemed themselves in other departments". The tournament was well organised, played in beautiful facilities all in close proximity of each other, literally walking distance. We played one match on Senwes Park and this was extremely exciting for our younger players". "We lost our first game against the now champions, Union Stars from SWD, by 6 runs. Thereafter, we were on a mission to win the rest of our games with bonus points. In my opinion, our bowling attack was one of the best at the tournament and I thought we would get the better of our oppositions in this department. As it stands, we had good all-round performances and personal victories along the way". "There is always that one stand out player in every team, but for us, everybody chipped in. Nondumiso Shangase, on a purple patch, was our stand out performer with the bat and was amazing on the field. She was supported by Esihle Kawu, Olwethu Gasa and Nonkululeko Mlaba. Our bowlers bowled with incredible control and heat and impressed throughout the competition. We were upset to have finished second, but happy to have experienced club standards from around the country". This really has the team fired up for the upcoming season - to be better than previous seasons and always focus on what the task at hand is. In seasons to come, we would love to see a final played between the top 2 teams on the table". "To end we would like to thank everyone who supported us from KZNCU, KZN, Club Management and to CSA for hosting an incredible tournament."

GARY'S
A message to school “2023 is upon us and with it, a great opportunity for coaches to continue their journey of learning and self-development. The importance of coaches learning more about coaching and leadership can’t be more overstated. The holistic development of every player we work with is at stake and we as coaches have to become better versions of ourselves to have a meaningful and significant influence on the players that we have the RESPONSIBILITY and PRIVILEGE to lead. “The quality of any intervention is directly related to the interior condition of the intervenor.” (Bill O’Brien)
I love this quote as it continually asks the question of us as coaches and leaders – “What are our intentions and motivations when coaching a young player or a team?” We have to be very careful not to use the opportunity to dump our own frustrations and emotions on the players whom we coach, and always stay focused on our number one priority of developing skill. A school coach’s most vital role is to assist a school player in their development and continued progress. This is certainly not possible if the players have any suspicions that the actual priority of the coach is to win games for their own benefit, so that they can be recognized as a high performing coach. There needs to be balance of course as there is nothing wrong with striving to win. A noble cause which teaches about the values of competition. The interest in winning is also deeply ingrained in our society, however we need to be very careful that we do not seek to win at the risk and detriment of what we stand for as people. For many, winning at all costs has become a way to define who they are and they then measure their own worth through the win or lose column. Winning and losing is often seen as a metric for determining success. However, if handled correctly and carefully, both have a crucial role to play in the development of a young player as they journey through life with all of its trials and tribulations both on and off the sports field. Playing sport is designed to test the value system of all the custodians who participate. Whether you’re a player, coach or official.

ol cricket coaches
Everyone’s behaviour is under scrutiny and as custodians of the game, our responsibility as coaches, is to lead our players to behave responsibly and appropriately at all times. There is no place for unscrupulous behaviour which puts into question the values of the contests between teams or players. Those that “overstep the mark” and coaches that are accepting of any unsportsmanlike behaviour, are equally not serving the game and upholding its values and traditions. As cricket coaching practitioners, we should not tolerate this behaviour. Wishing all coaches, a fantastic 2023 with much learning and discovery!

SCHOOL CRICKET A month of KZN Girls Trials The KZN girls cricketing space kicked off their 2023 with their Primary and High School trials. The u13, u15, u16 and u19 divisions went through their initial trial processes. The Primary School girls trials were held at Penzance Primary School on Saturday, 22 March 2023. The trials were well attended and saw over 85 Primary School girls attend as District representatives. The selectors will look to select 2 squads who will train and play friendly matches until the final cut is made later in the year. Where the u13 tournament will be hosted this year is yet to be decided. We want to give our juniors the best chance possible and this is why we have hosted our trials so early. Our High School girls were excited, as their trials were held over 4 days at the Hollywoodbets Centre of Excellence at the Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium. The u15 age group is selected to strengthen KZN’s cricketing pipeline, by affording identified players the opportunity to train with our qualified coaches. The u16 and u19 age groups are selected to partake in the CSA National Weeks. Our selectors had many tough decisions to make as a larger training squad will be selected for both age groups. These squads will train with their respective coaches and the final teams will only be announced later in the year. The girls space has grown in leap and bounds over the last few years. The added sense of professionalism in the school space allows us to holistically challenge our training squads so that our girls are thoroughly prepared for what they face in the middle. Thank you to our Hollywoodbets Dolphins Ladies, KZNCU Coaches and educators who joined us for these trials. This Westville Boys High School prodigy showed his incredible talent with the KZN Coastal Conquerors earlier this year at the CSA Cubs Week and was named Player of the Tournament after finishing as the leading run-scorer of the tournament.
