Hole Food Rescue: Impact Report 2024

Page 1

ANNUAL REPORT 2024

“In 2024, Hole Food Rescue made incredible strides toward reducing food waste and cultivating food security in our community.”

DEAR FRIENDS, SUPPORTERS, AND

COMMUNITY MEMBERS,

As I reflect on the past year, I am filled with gratitude for all that we have accomplished. In 2024, Hole Food Rescue made incredible strides toward reducing food waste and cultivating food security in our community.

This year also marked a significant milestone in our journey: the launch of the Forever Home Capital Campaign and moving our operations into a new facility. After a decade of service, HFR outgrew the rented 800-square-foot space and acquired a 3,300-squarefoot facility. This new space not only enables us to rescue and redistribute more food but also allows us to expand our programs, deepen our impact, and be a constant for those who rely on us.

Last spring, an urgent need arose in our community when summer lunch provisions for children were reduced. In response, HFR teamed up with like-minded non-profits to address this critical issue. In the summer of 2024, we distributed 11,000 lunches to youth (a 36% increase from the previous year). This expansion, enabled by our new facility and the generous support of the community, is a testament to the impact we can make.

As I prepare to step down as Executive Director, I do so with immense pride in what we have accomplished together and with confidence in the future of Hole Food Rescue. My eight years here have been truly transformative, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to have served this incredible organization.

I sincerely want to thank all of you for your unwavering commitment to Hole Food Rescue. It’s been a privilege to be part of this organization. I’m confident that the next chapter will be even brighter and I look forward to witnessing the continued positive impact.

All my best,

Kitchen

The new prep kitchen has expanded our Sprout Summer Lunch program, providing essential meals to more children.

The kitchen maximizes food value by transforming excess produce into healthful pre-made meals, like soups, stews, and frittatas.

Food room

The new, expanded food room is key to our efforts to combat food waste and its harmful environmental impact by allowing us to rescue more food from going to landfills.

Walk-in

The new walk-in has doubled our food storage capacity, resulting in a substantial increase in food distribution. This expansion has allowed us to enroll more families and nourish more children through the Weekend Food Bag program.

The Construction and Design Team

The Building

Securing our own facility has provided much-needed stability by eliminating the risks inherent in a volatile rental market. Previously, renting two separate spaces placed a significant financial burden on HFR and separated our staff.

FOOD FOR THE COMMUNITY // COMIDA DE LA COMUNIDAD

Hole Food Rescue’s Food for the Community//Comida de la Comunidad (FFC) program saw more than 1600 individual monthly visits, a 15% increase in program utilization compared to 2023. This growth was due to increasing food rescues, community trust and familiarity, FFC Coordinators, and targeted neighborhood pop-ups.

FFC Coordinators: These dedicated volunteers operate distribution sites throughout the year, even during Jackson’s harsh winter weather. Program participants can rely on the FFC program as a source of food due to the unwavering support of their community coordinators. Through participant feedback we have learned that extra groceries help supplement families income so they can budget for necessary expenses such as new tires, snow removal, and more.

FFC Pop-Ups: A slow start to winter left seasonal workers facing an extended waiting period before receiving their first paychecks*. To address the resulting financial strain, HFR set up a pop-up at the Stilson Lot. In just one hour, the FFC served 122 participants and provided 1,000 pounds of rescued food. *A special thanks to the program coordinator who brought this need to our attention

This direct-to-community program provides easy access to food; overcoming common barriers like time, location, language, and choice. Operating like a free farmers market, it fosters a sense of shared responsibility in preventing food waste in Jackson, thereby reducing the stigma often associated with food assistance.

“This

program keeps our grocery bill down and keeps good food out of the landfill.”

HUNTERS FOR THE HUNGRY

Game meat is an excellent source of nutrition and is highly sought after at HFR programs.

Hunters for the Hungry (H4H) is a partnership between HFR, The Wyoming Wildlife Federation, and Sporting Lead-Free that connects hunters and meat processors with food access organizations to provide highquality nutrition to community members.

Thanks to a generous donor, for a second year, HFR has covered the processing fees for hunters who opted to donate their meat and any animal brought in by Wyoming Game and Fish. Hunters donated 12 animals to H4H this season, and HFR rescued 1,162 pounds of deer, bison, antelope, and elk. Sporting Lead-Free ensures all donated meat is scanned and certified lead-free for distribution at our programs.

CLOSING THE SUMMER MEAL GAP

Since its 2020 launch, the Sprout Summer Lunch program has been a vital resource for Teton County children, providing nutritious meals throughout the summer. Last summer, recognizing a critical need, HFR doubled its seasonal staff, volunteers, and food budget, enabling the distribution of 971 lunches each week up from 715 in 2023. This substantial increase meant an additional 3,499 lunches reached children over the eleven-week period.

“We love Sprout, it is such a great program that encourages engagement with the community and provides a valuable resource. ” - Sprout Parent

2024 SPROUT SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM

971 lunches provided to children each week Weekly lunch distribution increased 36% from 2023

10,680 total lunches distributed to children

Free lunches are distributed to any child who may need one through multiple methods. HFR volunteers deliver lunches to summer camps for children attending on scholarship.

The Sprout Mobile distributes lunches Monday through Friday at multiple locations where kids play during the day.

In 2024, HFR also partnered with distribution sites at Jackson Elementary School, Colter Elementary School, and Teton Literacy Center.

SPROUT WEEKEND FOOD BAGS

148 Families Enrolled

The Weekend Food Bag program provides free groceries to families to ensure children have enough healthy food for the weekend. This program experienced substantial growth by shifting from school-based distribution to direct home delivery which offers greater convenience to families. Bags include items like fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy snacks, and easyto-make meals, both rescued and purchased to ensure consistency.
