IMPACT REPORT 2022

A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dearest HFR Community,

What a remarkable year we had here at Hole Food Rescue! I am grateful to be able to lead this meaningful organization; to my five amazing colleagues who keep this ship afloat, our hardworking board, our strong and reliable volunteers, and our generous donors, thank you for making my first year in this role so enjoyable.

a daily struggle yet many community members are faced with this burden. In addition to the hardship of increased food costs, TCSD#1 had to retract the federal free meals program it was offering to all students since 2020. There are over 700 families that apply for this free and reduced lunch program in Teton County but only about 400 families qualify.

Through our nine FFC programs, we dispersed 159,435 pounds of food valued at $426,638. The numbers show us that there is an acute need for these precious resources throughout Jackson. Thank you to everyone who has helped us grow and blossom into the strong organization we are today. 2023 is going to be a big year and I can’t wait for what’s to come! Stay close.

Like years past, 2022 brought about its own set of challenges. The significant spike in inflation impacted our neighbors, working residents, and families that use HFR programs. The USDA reported that the food-at-home Consumer Price Index (grocery store food purchases), increased 11.8 percent from December 2021 to December 2022. Purchasing food should not be

Hole Food Rescue encompasses individuals who want to make positive impacts in their community. In 2022, HFR volunteers rescued approximately 920 pounds of healthy food daily. Participants of the Food for the Community // Comida de la Comunidad (FFC) program took on influential roles to share this nutritious food in their communities, strengthen neighborly connections, and adapt the program to their needs.

Hole Food Rescue’s Food for the Community//Comida de la Comunidad (FFC) is a direct-to-community model that focuses on reducing barriers inherent to traditional food access such as time, location, language, and choice.

families commuting into Jackson daily. Both of these programs were created and are run by their respective communities; incredible examples of what is possible with shared decision-making.

COMMUNITY-RUN:

2022 was a breakthrough year for FFCs with more than 1000 individual visits per month, a 27% increase from 2021. It also brought about a significant change of transferring ownership of these programs to the people utilizing them - an idea known as Participatory Framework. A team of 18 FFC Coordinators now share the responsibility of running these sites every week in their respective neighborhoods. These leaders are passionate about reducing food waste and cultivating food security in their communities.

“I have received food at programs for a few years; I was excited to reduce waste and have access to nutritional food. I also signed up for the school age kids grocery bag each week. Because I have always been treated with dignity and kindness at HFR, I recently started volunteering to coordinate at my neighborhood stop. Seeing neighbors and new friends access essential food with good vibes is super cool for our whole community.” - Sandra, FFC South

FFC PROGRAM EXPANSION:

In 2022, HFR launched two additional FFC sites; The Grove and FFC South. After considerable research and participant involvement, it was evident that a location south of town could benefit a number of

SPROUT A HOLE FOOD RESCUE INITIATIVE TO ENSURE CHILDREN IN TETON

COUNTY HAVE ACCESS TO NUTRITIOUS FOOD.

HFR’s Sprout Program runs throughout the school year and summer, to provide free lunches and additional food to children possibly experiencing food insecurity. It encompasses three derivatives: Sprout Weekend Food Bags, Middle Market, and Sprout Summer Lunches. Through these child-focused initiatives we hope to relieve the financial burden of rising food costs on families when children are not in school.

2022 SPROUT SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM:

7331 lunches provided to children a 24% increase from 2021

In this 12 week program, free lunches are delivered to any child who may need one through multiple distribution methods:

Volunteers deliver lunches to camps around Jackson for children attending on scholarship.

Sprout Stands are set up in the evening for working families to acquire a lunch for their child the night before.

The Sprout Mobile visits multiple locations Monday through Friday to bring lunches directly to where kids live and play during the day.

Sprout Activity Partners: Friends of Pathways, Grand Teton Music Festival, Grand Teton National Park, Jackson Hole Historical Society & Museum, Jackson Hole Public Art, Jackson Hole Wildlife Foundation, National Museum of Wildlife Art, Slow Food in the Tetons, Teton County Library, Teton County Search & Rescue, Teton Literacy Center, Teton Raptor Center, Teton Youth and Family Services, Vertical Harvest, Wyoming Stargazing

Sprout Food Partners: D.O.G. Burritos, Let Nature Nurture, Pearl Street Bagels, Pinky G’s Pizzeria, Rosa’s Tamales, Slow Food in the Tetons, Yeah Buddy Pizza

MIDDLE MARKET AT JH MIDDLE SCHOOL:

150 visits each week to the Middle Market at JH Middle School

This in-school food pantry is a collaboration between HFR and TCSD#1. It offers fruits and other healthy snacks and easy-to-prepare meals at the end of every school week. Opening this pantry to all students aims to reduce the stigma of accessing free food.

SPROUT WEEKEND FOOD BAGS:

115 families enrolled in Sprout Weekend Food Bags (WFB) a 30% increase from 2021

Through our WFB program, families are able to receive free groceries to ensure their children have enough healthy food to eat over the weekend. Bags consist of fresh fruits and veggies, healthy snacks, and shelf stable items. WFBs can be given discreetly to a child at school, delivered to their home, or picked up at the HFR Hub. In the 2022/2023 school year, 70% of families chose home delivery because of its convenience and accessibility, versus 50% in the previous year. This program has increased 167% since the start of the 2021 school year.

Sponsors of Sprout Weekend Food Bags:

“We love it so much! We appreciate everything from the food to the books and extra activities! My kids look forward to it!”

“We are very grateful for this program. It is an incredible service for the community. Martha and Danielle are lovely too. The program is so appreciated. Thank you!”

-Sprout Families

2022 FINANCIAL STATEMENT

The current estimated national value of each volunteer hour is $29.95, saving HFR $224,265.

HFR volunteers rescued $813,625 worth of food in 2022. Rather than wasting this precious resource, we recirculated it back into the community through our programs.
