Introducing: Food For The Community // Comida de la Comunidad Food for the Community (FFC) // Comida de la Comunidad is Hole Food Rescue's rebranded program that redistributes the food we rescue back into the community. Through our FFC’s, we bring free groceries directly to where people live and work in order to ease accessibility. With a new name, comes a new ride! The Food For The Community van will help us mobilize and expand our impact. There are currently eight weekly FFC sites throughout Jackson and a new location south of town is on the horizon. This month we hosted two “Pop-Up” FFC’s in the parking lot of Jackson Hole Marketplace and at the Melody Ranch Trailhead. More than 100 program participants, volunteers, board members, and staff helped welcome the van by distributing 1,130 pounds of rescued food! Visitors were also asked for feedback regarding the next location.

Tailoring our programs to meet the needs of participants is of utmost importance and essential to reduce barriers around location, time, language, and choice. We would like to thank the Town of Jackson, Teton County, and The Community Foundation of Jackson Hole for supporting our efforts and helping bring this vision to life. Keep your eyes peeled for the FFC Van as it settles into its new home here in the Tetons!

The CORE is a passionate and purposeful group of monthly givers on a mission to bring a greater awareness of food waste and its solutions to our community. The CORE provides stability to Hole Food Rescue through offering consistent, monthly donations to support our operations. This includes rescuing food seven days a week, redistributing this food to the community, and expanding our programs to further our impact. $10 a month helps us rescue 14 pounds of food. 14 pounds of food provides a community member lunch every day

Local Restaurants Fight Food Waste in JH! Here in Jackson, we all look forward to the reprieve of the off-season. This time of year though is usually when Hole Food Rescue is at its busiest. With restaurants closing and grocery stores adjusting to the slow down of ordering for peak season visitors, we see an increase in food donated. This year we rescued 1,987 pounds of food from six local restaurants. These businesses donate their surplus food to HFR to prevent waste but also because they know we will put it to good use. So what does this rescued food mean for our community? 30 pounds of food will provide one of our neighbors a week of groceries. 120 pounds of food can help a family of four for a week. We are grateful for our partnerships with every local restaurant that supports our mission. Wishing you a good off-season!

HFR Hub Remodel This month, HFR staff and volunteers put on our construction hats (figuratively speaking) and turned our small facility office into a hybrid office and prep space. Our operations team, Hailey and Eva, now have a beautiful new workstation and additional room for sorting and preparing outgoing food. This remodel was necessary to streamline operations and maximize space for our upcoming Sprout Summer Lunch Program.

Food Waste In The News: LabelsUnwrapped.Org Did you know that expiration dates on food labels actually have nothing to do with the safety of the food, and are only loosely tied to quality? Foods with a “best before” date should be safe to eat after the date has passed, but they may no longer be at their very best quality. This is also true for: “best by,” “best if used by,” “use by,” “enjoy by,” & other similar expressions. That’s why you should always follow your senses, the nose knows!
