2023
“Together, we are making a tangible impact on reducing waste and addressing food insecurity in this place we all call home.”

DEAR FRIENDS OF HOLE FOOD RESCUE,

As we navigate these exciting and sometimes demanding times, the steadfast support of the community continues to inspire and drive our mission. Together, we are making a tangible impact on reducing waste and addressing food insecurity in this place we all call home.

Over the past year, Hole Food Rescue has achieved significant milestones, including celebrating its 10-year anniversary, expanding programs to reach more families and individuals, securing a new facility, and rescuing more food than ever before (364,463 pounds, to be exact). The accomplishment of momentous feats requires the collective efforts of numerous individuals working together; including volunteers, board members, program participants, staff, food donors, and financial donors.

I recently reviewed survey results conducted in Teton County, where one participant (a father of four children, working two jobs to support his family) indicated an obvious need for rent assistance but reported no food insecurity and no need to access free food. This contradiction in his response starkly highlights our community’s struggle to meet basic needs like shelter and nutrition while also grappling with the associated stigma. The inability to afford rent likely weighs heavily on families when they shop for groceries. Hole Food Rescue strives to alleviate this burden by offering free, rescued food to families as a way to help supplement their income. Obtaining rescued food that would have otherwise been thrown away also helps shed the stigma around food assistance.

As we look ahead, we are excited about the opportunities that lie before us. We are actively exploring new initiatives to enhance the efficiency of our food rescue operations. Strengthening our relationships with partner organizations will contribute to the shared objective of addressing gaps in food assistance throughout Teton County. Your continued support and advocacy will be instrumental in realizing these goals and making a lasting difference in the lives of our neighbors.

Thank you for being a cherished friend of Hole Food Rescue.

Best,

Hole Food Rescue 2

A DECADE OF HOLE FOOD RESCUE

HFR becomes its own 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and hires its first two employees.

On June 24, HFR performs its first food rescue from Jackson Whole Grocer as a subsidiary of the Jackson Cupboard.

The HFR team grows to 100 volunteers.

HFR rescues a total of one million pounds of food and partners with the school district to launch an in-school pantry at Munger Elementary.

6,300 free lunches are provided to children through the Sprout Summer Lunch program. Food for the Community// Comida de la Comunidad (FFC) is launched to distribute free, rescued, nutritious food directly to people.

HFR launches their Sprout Summer Lunch Program for One22 Unified Summer Scholarship campers.

HFR celebrates reaching two million pounds of food rescued since inception. Sprout program expansion enables HFR to reach 27% more children and families.

The FFC program is expanded to seven locations, providing free food to approximately 200 families each month.

The Sprout Weekend Food Bag program is launched to ensure no child is without food over the weekend.

HFR finds an affordable, spacious new home that can secure its commitment to serve the community for years to come. The HFR team grows to 200 volunteers.

HOLE FOOD RESCUE’S FOREVER HOME

In a town where the cost of living far exceeds the financial means of many, the need for food assistance continues to rise. We’ve been exponentially expanding food rescues and outreach programs, and our current facility is bursting at the seams. After several years of searching for an affordable new home, we finally found a space that will secure our commitment to the community for years to come. In the new 3400-square-foot location, we have the capacity to increase our impact on both the environment and our community members.

In 2023, Hole Food Rescue launched our first-ever capital campaign. The funding from the three-million-dollar Forever Home Capital Campaign will cover the renovation costs, mortgage, and creation of the new programs that will arise from the space.

THE NEW SPACE WILL ENABLE US TO:

DOUBLE OUR FOOD STORAGE with increased walk-in fridge and freezer space. 100 additional square feet of cold storage enables us to rescue and distribute more food.

RESCUE MORE FOOD and expand our most valued programs for the community. With food rescues up 40% over the last two years, we will have the necessary space to store food.

PROVIDE FOOD FOR MORE CHILDREN through our Weekend Food Bag program. We estimate in the first year, we can impact 200 families during the 2024/2025 school year.

PREPARE MORE LUNCHES FOR CHILDREN benefiting from our Sprout Summer Lunch program. Operations will be streamlined and more efficient using our own kitchen.

USE FOOD TO ITS FULL POTENTIAL by converting excess produce into healthful make-ahead meals, like soups and frittatas in a new prep space and kitchen.

GAME MEAT

Hunters for the Hungry is a program partnership between Hole Food Rescue and The Wyoming Wildlife Federation, that connects hunters and meat processors with food access organizations to provide high-quality nutrition to community members. Game Meat is an excellent source of nutrition and is highly desired at HFR programs.

Hole Food Rescue’s Food for the Community//Comida de la Comunidad (FFC) is a direct-to-community model that focuses on reducing barriers inherent to traditional food access such as time, location, language, and choice.

Picture a farmer’s market with no financial transactions. An important aspect of this program is the ability to diminish the stigma around food assistance by assuring participants that the food they take home helps reduce food waste in Jackson.

In 2023, Food for the Community programs saw more than 1400 individual monthly visits, a 30% rise in program utilization compared to 2022. Increased participation over the past year is attributed to several factors:

• Increase in food rescues from local food donors.

• Rising food costs

• Participant involvement in managing neighborhood locations

• Community trust and familiarity

As the Food for the Community model becomes a staple for their respective communities, program popularity grows, and other communities become eager to start their own. In response to participants’ suggestions for future locations, HFR piloted “Fall Pop-Ups” at five possible sites. In all, 175 participants helped rescue food and contributed insight to a possible expansion in 2024. Thank you to the hosting sites for their support: Cottonwood Park, Hidden Hollow Apartments, Karl Johnson Mobile Home Park, Coombs Outdoors, and Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (Stilson Lot).

Thanks to a generous donor, HFR was able to cover the processing fees for hunters who opted to donate and for any animal brought in by Wyoming Game and Fish to ensure that no animal goes to waste. Hunters donated 8 animals to Hunters for the Hungry this season, and HFR rescued 1,443 pounds of deer, antelope, and elk. Sporting Lead-Free ensures all donated meat is scanned and certified lead-free for distribution to program participants.

The Sprout Summer Lunch Program distributes free food to children through multiple methods. HFR volunteers deliver lunches to various summer camps to ensure that children attending on scholarship have a meal for that day. Sprout Stands are set up in the evenings for working families to collect their children’s meals for the following day. Additionally, the Sprout Mobile operates Monday through Friday, distributing lunches at various locations frequented by children during the day.

The Sprout Weekend Food Bag (WFB) program provides free groceries to families to ensure children have enough healthy food for the weekend. Bags consist of an assortment of items like fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy snacks, and easyto-make meals that are both rescued and purchased. To increase accessibility, WFBs can be received at school, homedelivered, or collected from the HFR Hub.

In support of The First Lady of Wyoming’s Beef for Backpack program, HFR collaborated with Mead and Walton Ranch to have two cattle donated by these generous local ranchers. After the cattle were processed, HFR received 5000 beef jerky sticks. Thanks to these partners, children enrolled in the WFB program receive locally sourced meat snacks every week.
