HOFSTRA UNIVERSITY Classics Major AN 8-SEMESTER STUDY GRID (with distribution courses)
This example shows how an incoming first year student might complete a Classics major in 8 semesters. If you declare your major later, have advanced credit or competency in Latin and/or ancient Greek, or are a Transfer Student, your grid will look considerably different. Your choices may vary. Some courses fulfill more than one requirement, such as a Cross Cultural or Interdisciplinary Studies Core Distribution, opening up more space. In addition, all courses in Greek and Latin study counts towards your major. Up to 6 credits of Core Distribution credits may be taken during Study Abroad. Students are required to meet with a Classics advisor at least once a semester. Majors in Classics are encouraged to take courses relevant to the discipline offered by other departments, including: History, Religion, Philosophy, Art History, and Writing Studies & Rhetoric. For Honors College students: the first semester of Culture & Expression (HUHC 012 & 013) can count towards the Classics major as part of the required 12 s.h. in Classical Literature.
FIRST YEAR The grid below assumes you are beginning with no placement credit in a foreign language; note that many students receive placement in a language, which reduces the number of courses required to complete the major. Courses required for the major are in bold type. Fall
