P r o j e c t E x p e r i e n c e /A pp r o a c h To achieve project success in today’s highly competitive and rapidly changing Retail industry, each project must be approached with a focus on marketing and management as well as creative planning. We recognize that good retail design is as much about the market as it is about design and our retail architects work closely with our clients to balance the needs of developers, tenants, and shoppers. We design shopping centers that are not only profitable, but provide a pleasant shopping experience as well as a sense of community. The Hobbs+Black’s Retail Studio has a long and varied history with retail projects throughout the US, including experience in the design and renovation of regional malls, lifestyle centers, urban mixed-use complexes, and strip centers as well as parking decks and shopping center master planning.

Interior Design The Hobbs+Black Interior Design Studio has an award-winning portfolio exhibiting projects from a variety of sectors including education, corporate office, healthcare, hospitality, and senior living. Our clients range from small organizations seeking economically efficient workspace solutions to cutting edge healthcare facilities bridging the gap between comfort and sterility. Our ability to successfully resolve and surpass the goals of such a diverse group of clients directly stems from our approach; we engage each client in a dialogue to gain an understanding of their needs, resources, and objectives. The unique information discovered through this open programming process is the foundation for the entire project. We design the space to directly reflect the client’s input, and space plans are created around the personalized information of the client’s work-flow and growth. With a space specifically designed around the client’s daily use, tenants experience heightened functionality, flexibility, and efficiency while any obstacles affecting movement and productivity are alleviated. We understand that there cannot be a singular focus when creating a space, but an overall understanding of every objective. Our diverse team draws from our members’ vast and varied experiences to solve and transcend unique design challenges. In addition, our strong working relationship with a variety of consultants allows us to draw from a large number of resources bringing the client the maximum amount of options both in cost and aesthetic.

City Creek Center includes the redevelopment of Block 75 and Block 76 in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah into a mixed use development occupying the majority of the two 10-acre blocks. Hobbs+Black served as the architect of record for the central retail and above for-rent residential apartments, the glass-enclosed skybridge connecting the two blocks, and the elevator and escalator lobbies in the below-grade parking garages. The retail portion consists of a new multi-story regional shopping center with two anchor stores, Nordstrom and Macy’s, several full service restaurants, and a food court. The residential space above the retail center includes 111 units and an amenities building that serves the residential towers located on the site. These areas are connected by an outdoor pedestrian avenue with a creek that runs from east to west across the two blocks including a 14 foot waterfall at the creek’s source. The retail tenants surround a large open air court on both blocks and line a main eastwest retail pedestrian street that can be fully sheltered by a retractable glass roof. In addition to the retail and residential that makes up the Hobbs+Black portion there are other firms designing five new high-rise residential towers, a multi-level office building and four levels of underground parking.

The Mall of San Juan is a contemporary two-level regional mall with 650,000 square feet of leasable space anchored by a 100,000 square foot Saks Fifth Avenue and a 138,000 square foot Nordstrom. The project also included the construction of three independent parking structures able to handle upwards of 2500 vehicles. As architect of record, Hobbs + Black worked with Taubman to create a vibrant and rich shopping environment that responds to the local culture. A roof top dining terrace with supporting lease space provides space for shoppers to enjoy the Caribbean breeze while the two main shopping levels organically flow from each end of the center. The unique continuous point-supported skylight was custom designed to allow the sun to filter through while withstanding the Caribbean heat. Many natural materials were selected for the interior and accented by vibrant colors and textures. As the first upscale regional shopping center in the Caribbean, the mall is strategically located near the international airport and only minutes from the historical old town and cruise ship port. The Mall of San Juan, with its beautiful architecture, unique tenant mix, and prime location is positioned to be the premier shopping environment in the Caribbean.

Restoration Hardware (RH), a luxury home furnishing retailer, has been expanding their full service galleries into select markets across the US. Hobbs+Black worked with the RH design team to build this four-story, 80,000-square-foot design gallery which blurs the lines between residential and retail, indoors and outdoors, home and hospitality. Experience the striking mural installation by contemporary artist, RETNA. Guests can dine in a dramatic sky-lit rooftop restaurant with French antique black-and-white marble floors, 16-foot-tall birds of paradise and trickling fountains. Enjoy a handcrafted coffee or glass of wine from the wine vault, pantry and espresso bar while you experience RH Interiors, RH Modern, RH Baby & Child and RH TEEN. The estate gardens and rooftop park showcase collections of RH Outdoor. Visitors can interact in the Design Atelier with professional interior designers, who can help re-imagine their space, and conceptualize a fresh and inspiring way to live.Hobbs+Black has an extended relationship with RH, working on their galleries in several parts of the country.

Restoration Hardware (RH), a luxury home furnishing retailer, has been expanding their full service freestanding galleries into select markets across the US. Hobbs+Black worked with the RH design team to build a 60,000 square foot gallery as part of a larger redevelopment project at the Cherry Creek Shopping Center in Denver, Colorado. The team worked with the developer to pull the RH structure to the street front and respond to the major redevelopment in the area along 1st Avenue. The Gallery consists of four stories with three levels of enclosed space and a fourth level roof terrace with mountain views. The enclosed space was designed to highlight RH’s expanding product offerings including their new RH Modern, RH Teen, and RH Baby and Child lines. The gallery at Cherry Creek creates a unique experience for customers who can explore the contemporary gallery while shopping within a space that feels like a home, rather than a store. RH Cherry Creek is the first of several galleries completed that Hobbs+Black and RH are collaborating on around the country.

The Detroit Shoppe, located in the Somerset Collection mall in Troy, Michigan, is a renovated retail space featuring products made in Detroit. The store was constructed within an existing tenant space at The Somerset Collection. Ever-changing displays featuring the city showcase unique items inspired by the colorful history of Detroit. Among these treasures are a Model T car, a Motown Records-inspired recording studio, and a hallway lined with historical photos of Detroit. In a philanthropic effort, The Somerset Foundation operates the store, with all proceeds from the sale of merchandise going to Detroit nonprofits and cultural institutions.

This two-level, 740,000 square foot shopping center is located adjacent to the Tampa airport and features four upscale anchor stores, including Dillard’s, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, and Lord & Taylor’s. Additionally, the center features the Bay Street Village Retail entertainment area and a food court. Two new parking decks are also included in the project. The East Deck is a two-level deck with 840 parking spaces, and the West Deck has one level and 510 spaces. Hobbs+Black worked closely with the corporate architects for the anchor stores to plan and schedule the construction of their new retail space. In addition, Hobbs + Black coordinated the activities of the sub-consultants and specialty consultants working on this project. The successful food court at International Plaza was in need of new finishes after many years of use. Hobbs+Black worked to design a space that respected the existing mall finishes while enhancing the sophisticated Florida architecture. Furniture was chosen that allowed for flexibility and durability. Tech tables were strategically placed throughout the space, organizing the seating and giving customers convenient places to work and eat.

The Cherry Creek mall was originally constructed in 1990 and was then expanded and remodeled in 1994, all by Hobbs+Black. The most recent renovation project included demolition of the existing Saks Store and Mall Valet area. Redevelopment of the Saks building pad accommodates the construction of a new four-story 50,000 square foot Restoration Hardware “mini anchor,” in addition to 35,000 square feet of new retail ross leasable area. The primary focus of the project was to provide a new “front door” and face to the thriving neighborhood. Part of the project also included renovation of the old Saks court with upgrades to technology and lighting. A new large skylight and strategic seating arrangements provide a complementary addition to the existing mall celebrating its 25th anniversary.
