CONTROL GAGING PITTSFIELD TOWNSHIP, MICHIGAN

Control Gaging engineers, designs, and manufactures precision gages for machine tools in the new facility. The construction consisted of steel framing with an envelope of concrete masonry, glass curtainwall at the office, and insulated metal panels at manufacturing areas. The manufacturing space includes one overhead loading dock with seal and one grade level dock door. The new facility improves efficiency in Control Gaging’s current operations and offers the company room for future growth. It also offers natural recreation options to employees; the company plans to add a bike path around the facility and plant more than 200 trees on the site.

FREUDENBERG NORTH AMERICA PLYMOUTH, MICHIGAN

To support increased success and demand in the North American market, Freudenberg needed to develop a new Regional Headquarters for its US operations. An existing, single story office/ warehouse building comprised of 24,000 square feet was selected as the new headquarters. Overall, the structure of the facility was in excellent shape, but required significant aesthetic improvements to incorporate the Freudenberg corporate brand. The program called for 10,500 square feet of office space, sectioning off the remaining portions of the building into two high-bay lease spaces, totaling 6,048 square feet and 3,455 square feet each. The overall design is a clean and contemporary office space combining collaborative break out spaces, open office, private office, and flexible conferencing areas. The facade was updated to incorporate the Freudenberg brand and to improve thermal and weather performance with a tall, day-lit vestibule. Another project requirement that influenced the design was the desire to have the project achieve LEED Silver Certification. Combining the design aesthetic goals with the challenges of the depth of the facility, skylights and light tubes were incorporated to improve natural daylight throughout the facility.

TWEDDLE LITHO COMPANY MT. CLEMENS, MICHIGAN

This new building was designed to house a 60,000 square foot printing facility and included facility additions. The exterior reflects the company’s desired image of permanence and quality. This was accomplished through the use of brick and other materials that create a strong, classic appearance. The building consists of several basic functional areas. The office and administrative space totals 12,000 square feet. The offices are organized on a primary and secondary axis, minimizing circulation confusion. The primary axis is the direct link from the main entrance to the pressroom, reinforcing the importance of the link between the functions. The pressroom occupies the largest portion of the facility. It was designed to house two sheet-fed presses and three web presses The building was planned to allow for future expansion, including the potential addition of presses to the east and a bindery to the north. The paper warehouse houses all paper stock requirements. The layout of this area is critical in ensuring maximum efficiency in getting stock into the warehouse and then out to the pressroom. The shipping and receiving area is also designed to allow materials in and product out with minimum conflict.

DICASTAL GREENVILLE, MICHIGAN

The existing industrial facility underwent a renovation for the purpose of manufacturing lightweight aluminum alloy wheels for the automotive industry. The facility provides for melting, casting, heattreating, machining, painting, and testing of products. The renovation involved 65,000 square feet of programming area to be reviewed and redesigned for the best use of space. Additions for the foundry, waste water treatment plant, and office were included in the scope of work, and an additional 100,000 square feet was constructed to provide for an employee interconnection between the two manufacturing buildings.

BOWLING GREEN METALFORMING BOWLING GREEN, KENTUCKY

Bowling Green Metalforming is a new manufacturing facility located on a 132.0-acre site in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The single-story facility is 920,000 square feet, of which 47,000 is office area, with several two-story areas spread throughout the building. Hobbs+Black was required to coordinate with several processes including: •

E-Coat area

QA/QC labs with vibration isolation

Process mechanical room with several evaporative cooling towers

Chillers and air compressors

Nine process assembly lines

Medium-voltage interior power distribution loop including 11-6000 Amp substations

Ten presses ranging from 800 ton to 2500 ton

Associated coil looping pits and scrap conveyor tunnel

Coordination with the CSX railroad for spur lines and load tracks on the site and up to the building.

The building has a typical roof height of 32’-0”, with two high-bay areas meeting 60’-0”. There are five cranes running in various areas of the building, four of which are concentrated in the press bay. Two of these cranes have a 75 metric ton main hook with a 35 metric ton auxiliary hook (which equates to a 122 US ton crane). The building is supported on caisson footings, due to the presence of caves/karsts in the area. The client also mandated several systems to ensure that the facility is environmentally sound. Any area that involved a pit, or tunnel/basement, is treated with an epoxy sealant as a first line of defense with an additional environmental liner under these areas to provide additional safety measures.

MC3 MEDICAL DEVICES DEXTER, MICHIGAN

Hobbs+Black was hired to renovate a 46,000 square foot tilt-up concrete industrial building for MC3, a medical devices company. Constructed in the 1980s, the building had been vacant and was showing its age with leaking building joints and windows with bad seals. MC3 required office space for 60-80 staff members, as well as wet labs, clean room manufacturing labs, and warehouse areas. A contemporary entry was designed to complement the massive south elevation of the building. In line with MC3’s desire to host visitors, a video wall was added in the entryway. As part of the workplace design, Hobbs+Black created modern spaces including conference, training, and break rooms with integrated communications, audio visual, and teleconferencing systems.
