I need to get my son properly educated, but it came at a heavy cost for the family. There is a big discrepancy in our curriculum. By secondary 3, you have no choice but to go. The decision was to put him in the South, to expose him to the world. I live in a social house. Can I just go away for three years, and then come back and be secure with a home? Not if we follow the rules. So, we sent the young man off to the big cities.

All those things that affect the social aspect of housing in the North… what’s available to us, what’s just handed to us, what’s forced upon us, what’s expected of us. We want to be proud of the houses we live in – and that we don’t own. People want to build their own home, to establish their own pride within. We can’t do that presently. If anything is out of the policies, as a tenant, you can be removed. At the end of the day, I want to feel like I’m at home. Je dois veiller à l’éducation de mon fils, mais ça a demandé un sacrifice de la part de la famille. Il y a un grand décalage dans notre curriculum. Dès le secondaire 3, le seul choix est de partir. Nous avons choisi de l’envoyer au Sud, pour l’exposer au monde. Je vis dans un logement social. Aurais-je pu partir trois ans, puis simplement revenir dans une maison ? Pas si nous suivons les règles. Notre jeune homme a dû partir seul vers les grandes villes. Tout ce qui touche l’aspect social du logement au Nord… ce qui nous est disponible, ce qui nous est cédé, ce qui nous est imposé, ce qui est attendu de nous. Nous voulons être fiers des maisons dans lesquelles nous vivons – mais que nous ne possédons pas. Les gens veulent construire leur propre maison, y établir leur fierté. Nous ne pouvons le faire actuellement. Si quoi que ce soit ne respecte pas les règlements, comme locataire, on peut vous expulser. En bout de ligne, je veux me sentir chez moi.
