Town to proceed with pool work plan Tyler Waugh

news@hintonvoice.ca Council found out the ground around the recreation centre would support a potential new pool build – and they gave direction at its June 24 standing committee to complete a workplan over the next four to five months.

Council used the June 24 meeting to hammer out some of the what, where, when and how of a future build before directing administration to begin a workplan.

“The workplan will identify the design staging, the community engagement stuff,” said Laura Howarth, community and protective services director for the Town of Hinton. “We won’t know real costs until we get into detailed design.”

Consensus was reached that a new pool would be the priority next step and that the targeted site, for now, would be adjacent to the Bill Thomson Arena, consistent with what is contained within the Barr Ryder report.

Howarth said a basic workplan could be ready and back to council

by November, adding that if council wished, administration could have a design and construction plan ready to go this time next year at a cost of around $1 million, money that would need to be included in the 2015 budget.

She went on to say that any project, once receiving final approval, would likely involve a two-year buildout.

“Our planning has been between 2017 - 2020 is where you’re going to see a number of other debentures drop off,” said Kreiner. “Not to suggest that there won’t be a substantial tax increase for capital and operating supplement, but the borrowing capacity gets a whole lot better during that time period.”

There was some discussion around whether a plebiscite would be required to finance the pool. Kreiner pointed out that there was precedent for residents forcing a plebiscite on a capital expenditure – the Government Centre – so a plebiscite may be the reality if council initiates it or not.

Previous council had decided in May 2013 to prepare the pool financing question to a 2017 plebiscite, but earlier this spring the new council made a decision to expedite looking into the project by ordering a geotechnical study of potential build sites around the rec centre. Preliminary results of those investigations determined that conditions can support development.

“Completing this work helped define and outline the current status of the existing ground and building conditions so that council may direct next steps for drafting a pool/ recreation centre project work plan,” reads the administrative report.

High level summaries from structural engineering evaluations of

various rec centre structures found a few areas of concern, according to the administration report.

The Steve Hotchkiss Arena, Hinton Municipal Library, courts and the youth centre found no areas of concern and have an estimated life expectancy of 15 years.

Bill Thomson Arena (BTA) showed some signs of decay and there are large cracks in the side wall and has a life expectancy of five to 15 years. ”This structure should be monitored on a yearly basis. In addition, if any signs of deformation or other structural problems are observed, an engineer should be contacted immediately,” reads the summary on BTA. The report found some issues with the pool but, having said that, the steel super structure appeared to be in good condition and posed a life expectancy of 10 to 20 years.

Guidelines set for participatory budget Fram Dinshaw

reporter@hintonvoice.ca A group of roughly 10 local residents sat down with councillors and town staff to discuss the first ever ‘participatory budget’ on June 23 at the Hinton Municipal Library.

Billed by the town as a trial run to democratically engage the public in spending a $100,000 portion of the budget, the group decided to allow residents as young as 14 to vote on and submit projects, recognizing youth potential in driving development.

“The group felt that at (age) 14 there are some great ideas and they should have a say where the money goes as well,” said Mayor Rob Mackin.

The group also agreed to allow anyone from both Hinton and West Yellowhead to have a say, stipulating that projects must directly benefit the community with results within one year, and one person or group is able to submit more than one project at a time, but all must be headed by a ‘champion.’

Regarding future projects, each resident would have one vote and would have two days to cast them, champions will hold a presentation on voting day, would have to return funds in cases of non-compliance, and all submissions will be posted

on the Town website.

Projects will be agreed on by who gets the highest vote until the $100,000 total is used up. For example, Mayor Rob Mackin said that a group wanting a basketball court would put forward a plan and timeline, and if voted for by the public would proceed to council for what Mackin described as a ‘rubber stamp’ approval.

“Somehow we have to light a fire under Hinton, get them out, and not miss opportunities like this.”

While help such as technical assistance from the Town for projects will be available for groups, Mackin made clear that all projects would be community-driven.

“I believe it’s going to engage the

community in some of the decisionmaking, where the budget will be spent in terms of community projects and programs,” said Mackin.

Local resident JoAnn Race was pleased to see a new opportunity for Hintonites to engage with the Town and discuss potential projects, as well as bringing youth on board, urging everyone to take part in mapping out the next budget.

“Somehow we have to light a fire under Hinton, get them out, and not miss opportunities like this,” said Race.

Potential projects Race wanted to see included a riding lawn mower for the soccer fields, a new skatepark, painting or ‘silk-screening’ Telus pillboxes around town that she described as “ugly,” garden areas on street-side lawns where people could grow vegetables, a possible music amphitheatre outside the curling rink for live music in summer, and Town support for a tailgate flea market in Green Square for people to buy and sell household items.

No spending ideas were agreed on at the June 23 meeting, which instead acted as a ‘launch pad’ for both setting ground rules and potential issues that money could be spent on. Actual projects will be discussed in September and people wanting to champion ideas have the summer to prepare.

Around Town Air Quality Warning Alberta Environment reported a very high rating on the air quality health index for Hinton earlier this week, says a press release from the Town of Hinton.

The high reading was due to high dust and particulate matter in the air surrounding the monitoring station near the three-way stop of Drinnan Way and Switzer Drive adjacent to the Hardisty shopping district. Residents with respiratory conditions or sensitivities were advised to stay indoors, and avoid strenuous physical activity outdoors.

Hinton RCMP have seized two conducted energy weapons – stun guns – disguised as iPhones in the past week.

The initial seizure came after a June 18 report of a person trying to sell one online. Less than 24 hours later one was seized as a result of an investigation of a disturbance at a local drinking establishment.

A 28-year-old Hinton woman has been charged with assault with a weapon and possession of a prohibited weapon as a result of that incident. The Hinton RCMP would like to make the public aware that conducted energy weapons, despite being available on the internet, are considered to be prohibited weapons as described in the Criminal Code. As such, those found in possession of same may be charged criminally.

Out of sight, but top of mind

Hinton has always benefitted from a knowledge economy, but the reality is most residents are oblivious to one of our crown jewels, and it’s been here since 1960.

The Hinton Training Centre has sat, isolated within its treed perimeter, seemingly a world apart from the community. Details of its inner workings remain a mystery to most people in town, which is more the shame, because it is home to world-renowned research and unique wildland fire training in North America.

What started as a forestry school is now home to forest fire training that draws students, guests and academics from around the world – around 40,000 person days of use a year. There are around 3,000 clients a year that spend around $256.69 per client.

HTC is also home to the Foothills Research Institute (FRI), which is home to unprecedented wildlife research that includes grizzly bears, caribou and mountain pine beetle, among others, which draws in academics from around the globe. But FRI is more than birds and bees. It features programs that bring industry and researchers together to mitigate industrial impact on the landscape and its wildlife, while creating efficiencies in communication and land use between shareholders. As sustainable management of our resources continues to push further to the forefront, this kind of research and programming will be in high demand.

From a numbers point of view, the HTC has a $4.4 million annual budget, including salaries of $2.7 million for 44 full-time and 22 seasonal employees. Add in the positions at FRI, FP Innovations and other organizations at the HTC and you’re talking 100 knowledge-based jobs in our community. That’s just a snapshot of what the HTC does, and it’s now looking to upgrade its aged infrastructure and expand to invite new opportunities.

There’s a $75 million plan to modernize the facility that is approved and shovel ready. All it awaits is provincial approval of the funds, which is where the community comes in. Rob Galon, director of the Hinton Training Centre, made his pitch to the chamber at its June 23 lunch meeting, and earlier this spring also made a presentation to Town council looking for help to champion this project.

The expansion would further increase the portion of the economic pie our knowledge economy contributes and it will ensure the proper operation of an institution that should be a greater source of pride than it currently is. Our community too often fails to champion and boast about those things that make us unique. Let’s not miss this opportunity to do so now. The HTC is a gem in our community, let’s do what we can to ensure it shines for another 50-plus years.

Wildlife officer Chris Watson and colleague Adam Jalbert were on a routine patrol in the Teck Coal mine site mountains when they stumbled across a monster-sized ram’s horn poking out of the snow.

Watson recognized the ram as one he had last seen alive in spring 2012, noticing that its hooves were ‘foundered’ or extended, making it difficult to run from predators and likely contributed to the animal’s death some time in May 2013.

The animal left behind horns that initially measured a little more than 209 inches, a potential world record.

But the horns shrunk to just under 206 inches, according to the Boone and Crockett measurement standard, even as Watson was still amazed by the find.

“It’s the largest ram I’ve ever seen anywhere and this region has produced the largest rams in

“Some of the numbers recorded suggest that we’ve gone from a population of 1,100 (rams) to 775,” said Watson.

Illegal poaching is less of a problem thanks to education and enforcement, as well as effective signage at the mine site that serves as a sanctuary for the animals.

Watson said that 12 animals were shot in 2012, but only three were killed in 2013.

According to Watson, it was unlikely that the ram discovered in April was shot, saying that predation was more likely, while the Boone and Crockett Club believe it died of old age.

Extremely high mountain pine beetle (MPB) survival has been recorded in pockets across northern Alberta, including one north-west of Edson.

Several small sites in Yellowhead County were surveyed by Environmental and Sustainable Resources (ESRD) from May 12 - June 14, but spokesperson Duncan MacDonnell said that the threat to trees in Hinton was currently low, despite occasional infestations being uncovered inside town limits in past years.

“I don’t think that small pocket is much of a threat due to the distance away from Hinton. The beetles typically stay in the general vicinity from the trees they emerge. There is much variability across the landscape with regards to overwinter survival. I would bet one could find good survival even closer to Hinton if we had the time to do so. The more telling info will come after we do the aerial surveys to detect trees killed last year,” said MacDonnell.

Surveys will begin in early August to detect trees killed last year, followed by a green-to-red ratio ground survey to compare the number of red trees detected from the aerial survey that were killed last year, against the number of green attacked trees that are currently infested at a given site.

For example if there are 10 currently attacked (green) trees and 5 red trees,

the population at that site is doubling, so it will be a 2:1 ratio.

“Mature pine are the most susceptible. As well, trees weakened by other pests or drought have weakened defence mechanisms and are more vulnerable to MPB,” said MacDonnell.

While a BC-style mass infestation of Albertan forests is still a possibility depending on weather and MPB inflights from the west, similar to what happened in 2006 and 2009, MacDonnell said the risk is dropping as beetle populations in BC are in decline.

ESRD states six million hectares of forest are prone to MPB attack.

Infestations threaten not just Alberta’s $4 billion forest industry but also menace watersheds, fish and wildlife habitat, and tourism.

“If we stopped our control program we would also see some increases in various areas. One thing working on our side is that we do not have the extent of mature pine that BC does. Yes we have vast swaths of susceptible pine, but it does not cover almost the entire province as is in BC,” said MacDonnell.

Since 2004 - 2005, Alberta has invested $414 million in MPB prevention.

Helping ESRD is the Hinton-based Foothills Research Institute.

Cadomin residents want upgrades for Hwy 40 Fram Dinshaw

reporter@hintonvoice.ca Cadomin residents are sounding the alarm over the state of Hwy 40 near their village, saying it too often turns into a gooey, muddy, mess that makes for white-knuckle driving in spring.

The last 10km of Hwy 40 from Hinton to Cadomin is unpaved and, while it is periodically gravelled, residents say the gravel often falls into the ditch, leaving a bed of claylike mud that is not only difficult to drive through but is also too narrow.

“I was slipping and sliding and I

was driving in first gear at 10km an hour and I was still sliding. I just had to do really good steering to keep on the road,” said Cadomin resident Cathy Bancroft.

She felt the best solution would be a blacktop surface to prevent a buildup of mud and dirt.

“It’s getting worse over the years,” said Bancroft.

Far from being a little-used back road, Bancroft said that Hwy 40 is often busy with campers, quadders, and other tourists who visit Cadomin in summer, some of whom own holiday homes in the village.

Last month Bancroft took photos of the road and sent them to West Yellowhead MLA Robin Campbell, saying that a number of locals had filed complaints to the province about the road’s current state.

a road with only two tracks and is often forced to drive on the wrong side to avoid skidding or getting stuck in mud up to eight inches deep during the spring rains.

Adding to the problem is that anti-dust calcium spread across the road to prevent huge clouds being kicked up mixes with the mud to make it even more slimy , according to Jacoby. For him, road conditions were at their worst ever in the first part of May, when heavy rain turned the road almost impassable.

“A person would have to be nuts to come down that road,” said Jacoby.

But he added that in winter, driving on the unpaved road was better than tarmac when frozen solid.

Nonetheless, he still wanted to see Hwy 40 near Cadomin paved over by the province.

“That would be a godsend but I don’t think it will ever happen,” said Jacoby.

Alberta Transport confirmed there are no plans to pave the portion north of Cadomin in the three-year construction program, but is trying to make road conditions bearable by using graders to keep it smoothed over. However, the province did spread 300 tonnes of gravel over the muddy road on June 10, which Alberta Transport spokesperson Jasmine Franklin said went “over and above,” her department’s regular maintenance program.

LaBerge is in his third year at the helm of the fast-growing festival, which has emerged from its fledgling roots to this year attract bands like Blue Rodeo and Gord Downie, The Sadies and The Conquering Sun for July 18 - 20 at Entrance Ranch.

“We are all about the volunteers.

We did our We Love Our Volunteers campaign last year and it’s something we still feel is critical to our success,” he said, adding that WMMF has been dubbed Canada’s largest volunteer-run festival for a reason. “As we continue to grow so does our appreciation for the capacity of our community to support this event with volunteer hours.”

“For me, and for a lot of our volunteers, it’s fun to get involved and help put on a successful event,” she said.

Hanington said there are a number

of open positions in the beer gardens, at the box office, the volunteer table or the information table, among others. She said volunteers are required to work 12 hours over three days in approximately four hour shifts and, in return, they get in free.

Those who help organize ahead of time are required to put in more

hours for their free entry and, at the end of the weekend, volunteers are also rewarded with a catered appreciation dinner in conjunction with the open mic event Sunday.

Hintonites to help Nepal tree planting Program will be serve up deliciousness July 1 at Föhn for funds Fram Dinshaw

reporter@hintonvoice.ca Local resident Sharad Karmacharya is planning to take up to 17 Hintonites to his native country of Nepal in October to help high school students launch a sustainable forestry program.

The group of forestry experts will visit the town of Pithauli in southern Nepal, where they will meet and give presentations with Nepali forestry specialists, as well as helping high school students in an environmental forestry club to plant seedlings and start a tree nursery through the organization Forests Without Borders (FWB).

The Pithauli students will plant trees on both school property and public land, a small step in tackling Nepal’s deforestation problem, caused by people chopping down trees for fuel, leaving bare hillsides unsuitable for farming and prone to both landslides and monsoon flooding.

“At least 80 per cent of the energy need comes from forests,” said Karmacharya.

While Nepal uses some hydroelectric and solar power, they are too expensive for most people to afford whereas wood fuel is free.

That means teaching sustainable forestry practice is vital.

“It’s learning for students and I think it would be very effective to educate and motivate the local community to partake in forestry activities through students, by which I mean that environmental forestry club at the high school,” said Karmacharya.

FWB will fund nursery construction to the tune of $5,100, and will raise money through events such as silent auctions and a seedling sale in Fort Saskatchewan earlier this month. Karmacharya currently serves as a councillor with FWB’s Alberta chapter, which was founded in 2013 and is based in Edmonton.

“This school nursery project is to be done through the Alberta caucus of Forestry Without Borders,” said Karmacharya, who added that money would be handed over via the Kathmandu Rotary Club.

Nazareth In Hinton The band that has rocked for decades with hits like ‘Love Hurts’ will play the Hinton Community Centre on June 30. Nazareth, which just released a new album this month called Rock ‘n’ Roll Telephone, finds its roots in 1960s Scotland.

Current band members feature Linton Osborne on lead vocals, Pete Agnew – the only holdover from the original lineup back in the day – on bass/vocals, Jimmy Murrison on guitars and Lee Agnew on drums/vocals.

Daya Karmacharya will be serving up more momo goodness as one of several international food vendors featured at Föhn Festival on July 1 in Green Square.

Daya and daughter Keepa, who led fundraising efforts for Nepal trips under his own Himalayan Field Studies Program (HFSP) that he first started in 2001. He later began the Himalayan Retreat program for nonstudents, focused more on cultural exchange and milder adventures better suited for tourists.

Past HFSP fundraisers included Keepa doing henna painting at Föhn Fest while her parents sold momos, a traditional Nepali delicacy similar to dumplings, alongside other goodies from their native land. In 2012 a fundraising dinner was also organized to raise cash.

Last fall a HFSP group from Hinton trekked to Annapurna base camp, 13,000 feet up a 26,545 foot peak, and built a library at the Chandika Primary School near the city of Pokhran in an effort spearheaded by both the local and Nepali Lions Clubs. Hintonite Helena Chell subsequently volunteered at the school from March to June where she taught English.

Karmacharya intends to do other projects with Nepali schools, saying that they’ll be asking for some donations and anyone who wants to help out can send money via the Hinton Lions Club for Nepal.

The Föhn Festival is next week, and entertainment looks to be impressive for the annual multicultural family event July 1 in Green Square.

On stage will be The Pepperseed Steel Band and its calypso stylings, as well as local talents like Sydney Waddell and The Blue Diamond Quartet.

Hinton Minor Soccer qualifies six squads for provincials next month Fram Dinshaw

reporter@hintonvoice.ca Hinton Minor Soccer is riding high after seeing six of its teams qualify for spots at their respective provincial championship tournaments next month, though only five will go.

Hinton’s U12 Jellybeans defeated Whitecourt 6-0 and then dropped hosts and old rivals Edson by a 3-2 score to clinch gold at their zone tourney on June 14-15. After Edson scored two goals in the first 15 minutes the Jellybeans managed to hold on until Sierra Sim scored for Hinton from a seemingly impossible angle, giving her team a half-time deficit of 2-1.

Myya Ammann equalized for Hinton near the beginning of the second half followed by another goal from Klaudia Scobie with a left footed kick into the left corner. It was then down to Jellybeans goalie Skye Voelker and defenders Madison Allan, Cassie Hough, Larissa Beauregard and Kara Danis, while their colleague Ahlannah Auger managed to stop Edson’s forward.

“For the past two years the (Edson) Strikers have had our number. We have played them 10 times over the past two years and have lost all of the games.

This was our 11th try for a victory and it couldn’t have come at a sweeter time. It was a very tight and tension filled game,” said coach Monika Braun.

After the match Hinton won not only gold but also a $150 gift voucher from Boston Pizza for being the most sportsmanlike team.

“This is the second year of the U12 girls travel program and last year the girls did not win a game.

This year we exceeded our expectations with nine wins and five losses; a gold medal at the Slurpee Cup and a gold medal at the Northwest Central zones. The girls worked hard at practice all year,” said Braun.

The U12 girls are eligible for provincials in Vermillion on July 11-13 but will not go due to lack of players. Representing Hinton will be the U18 boys and girls, U16 girls, and U14 girls and boys.

The U14 boys won a place in Vermillion after beating their local rivals 4-2 at zones in Hinton on June 21, followed by a 6-1 win against Jasper the next day. A third game against Whitecourt was called off as they did not have enough players, giving Hinton an automatic 3-0 win and a zones gold medal.

U14 coach Gary Larguinho said that his team’s

result against their cross-town rivals showed both team spirit and “confidence in the system,” as his players believed in and supported each other. But Larguinho’s boys were slow off the mark in the first half, which allowed the other Hinton squad more ball possession.

“We told them to take over in the second half and we controlled the game, not them,” said Larguinho.

Dino Buttazzoni, coach of the other U14 squad, said that despite his team’s loss they managed to press the opposition by taking many shots at their goal, but were hindered by injuries and one of their stronger players being absent.

His boys were also knocked by a sudden goal in the second half during what their coach described as a “very back-and-forth,” game.

“I think the whole game came down to some bounces and that was it,” said Buttazzoni.

Earlier on June 21 the U18 boys won 11-1 against Edson in the morning followed by another 7-0 win against their local rivals that afternoon.

Coach Brad Humphrey said Edson had no subs and ran short on players, especially for their afternoon game when they only fielded nine.

“We played acceptable, but it (was) very difficult to maintain form in the second game when their numbers are low,” said Humphrey.

Despite their high score, Hinton only had ball possession for 24 out of 45 minutes in the second half. Humphrey said that the 11-0 goal difference in their morning match resulted in his team getting a little sloppy when back on the pitch that afternoon.

“The score did reflect the flow of play and our intent was not to run up the score, but again, maintain control in the game and the discipline of our style of play,” said Humphrey.

Mya Robinson won gold in the 9-10 girls division after coming first in her 50 metre back stroke with a time of 43.38 seconds, her 100m and 50m freestyle races at 1:28.55 and 38.62, respectively, and the 100m individual medley at 1:43 91.

Her fellow gold medallist, Micah Scott, came first in the 11-12 girls division in her 100 and 50m freestyle races in times of 1:14.34 and 32.84, respectively, then earned second place in both her 100m individual medley at 1:27.35 and 50m butterfly

“It was a lot harder than I thought it would be. It felt like you were going to fall back on your butt,” said newcomer Kelly Zimmermann of her practice sessions.

She joined after a couple of existing members invited her to practice and Zimmermann found her new teammates friendly and accepting, building camaraderie that is vital on the track.

Katie Jones earned bronze in the 11-12 girls division after winning her 50m breast stroke in 45.73 seconds, earning second place in her 100m butterfly and breast stroke in times of 1:39.21 and 1:39.28, respectively, and came fourth in individual medley at 1:32.75.

“I think they had a really good turnout and lots of kids got personal bests and the relays were really fun as well,” said Devils coach Monica Epp.

Hinton won five out of six relay races, coming first in the undereight boys 100m freestyle relay and 100m medley, the under-12 girls 200m freestyle, the under-10 girls 100m freestyle, and the under-12 girls 200m medley. The Devils also earned second place in the under-10 girls 100m medley.

New swimmers making their meet debut were Sean Cote, Simon Ruszkowski, Mikayla Ruszkowski, Andie Lawrence, and Jolene Michener.

Epp said that all swimmers improved on their times, having worked on their strokes and turns, skills that she was keen for her team to keep developing throughout the season. The Water Devils’ next meet is on July 5 in Spruce Grove.

Local firefighters earn top spot at skills training Fram Dinshaw

reporter@hintonvoice.ca Local firefighters from the Edson Wildfire Management Area (EWMA) clinched first place out of 18 at the June 17-18 Wildfire Competitive Skills Training event at Cache Percotte near Hinton.

Top spot was claimed with 318 points, while EWMA’s rappel crew earned fifth place at 274 points and helitackers 10th at 204 points, in an event aimed at honing vital firefighting skills in time for wildfire season. It’s also designed to build camaraderie and team spirit among firefighters, who may not have seen each other since training or their last time fighting blazes or floods together.

“It’s great to be here with my crew in the Foothills, especially as we’re the group representing the area that’s hosting the wildfire competitive training,” said EWMA helitack crew leader Ryan Burlingame.

His crew started the day with a ‘gear hill climb,’ hauling a pump and eight lengths of hose up a steep slope in a relay event, a chance for firefighters to test how far they can move if a real blaze turns on them and forces a crew to evacuate by helicopter. Burlingame said such occurrences were rare as firefighting crews normally placed themselves

out of harm’s way when fighting a blaze, but his crew had a tough task nonetheless.

“It was an epic hill,” said Burlingame.

Firefighting teams also raced to perform other vital skills, such as chainsawing, axe proficiency, and mock fire mapping, according to EWMA’s communications officer Joan Simonton.

“Really it’s training on all the skills and knowledge that they gain and need,” said Simonton.

EWMA crews cover one of 10 wildfire areas in Alberta, the others being Slave Lake, Lac La Biche, Fort McMurray, High Level, Peace River, Grande Prairie, Whitecourt, Rocky Mountain House, and Calgary.

“One of the crews that were coming here ended up going to a fire,” said Brian Wog, provincial helitack co-ordinator.

A frontline helitack crew has four or eight people and must land in a clearing when dealing with wildfires, whereas seven-strong frontline rappel units can rope into a tight spot to tackle a blaze and train for an extra two weeks, said Wog. Wog said that the Wildfire Competitive Skills was held at Cache Percotte camp again this year due to its location close to facilities including the Hinton Training Centre.

LEBOEUF, Alex Burke On June 12th, 2014, Mr. Alex Burke LeBoeuf of Hinton, Alberta passed away at the age of 86 years.

Left to mourn his loss, his brothers John and wife Linda, Paul and wife Maureen both of Edmonton, Alberta, Sisters Viola (Bill) Durette and family of Campbellton, NB and Marlene LeBoeuf of Montreal, Que. Also surviving is his sister in law Lois LeBoeuf and family of Hinton, Alberta as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Burke was predeceased by his wife Alice in 2006, his parents Vincent and Anna LeBoeuf as well as his siblings: Shirley Irvine, Wayne LeBoeuf, Chester LeBoeuf, Vernon LeBoeuf, Roger Lebouef and Herb Lebouf.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place and interment of cremated remains will take place at a future date.

news@hintonvoice.ca Every once in a while, when we’re feeling frisky as a family, we branch out beyond our usual family treks around the Beaver Boardwalk area and Happy Creek to seek new adventures.

Hiking with a family is different than your average endeavour, which is what usually keeps us closer to home. When you factor in the specialized equipment – an abundance of juice boxes, snacks, diapers and wipes, to name but a few – and add the extra weight of toddler cargo, it is enough to even keep the most hearty of Sherpas at base camp.

Alas, we didn’t have a Sherpa on our hike up the Old Fort Point trail in Jasper National Park. We just had me.

So it was that, fresh off a bout of the flu as a family that week, we made the trip on a sunny Sunday morning. The Old Fort Point hike is a special one for Morgan and Gabe as it is the one they’ve done together each and every Mother’s Day since they’ve moved to Hinton.

We pulled into the parking lot – a busy place made busier with river rafts loading and unloading nearby – and got the family ready. Morgan had the dog, Kona, on her leash while Gabe (8) ventured alongside and we packed Walker (1.5) into our backpack carrier and strapped him to me.

There are two approaches to reach Old Fort Point – and on this day we decided to start on the stairs located just out of sight of the parking lot. There is a 7km loop you can do, but we were on a timeline that day and were more concerned with climbing for a panoramic view to enhance our picnic experience.

The three or four flights of stairs were steep, but in good shape with good handrails and brought us

up out of the woods onto the first rocky outcrop overlooking the Athabasca River, where a monument to the Canadian Heritage River can be found.

We continued up the trail, which included some rock stair sequences that Morgan and Gabe manoeuvred no problem, though it was narrow and a little unstable at points. I approached those areas with more caution due to the precious, and sometimes shifting, toddler cargo on my back.

The trail is listed at only 130m of elevation change, and maybe it was the combination of carrying Walker and still getting past the final stages of the flu, but it felt steeper than that along the way.

We made it most of the way up the trail, but not quite to the summit, when we encountered a couple dozen sheep in our path, including one male who seemed to be on watch. We looked around, loved the view, and decided that a nearby collection of boulders were a more ideal option for our picnic than pushing past a group of resident sheep with the dog and kids in tow.

So it was that under the steely glare of the one male sheep – The Sentinel, we called him – we enjoyed our fruit and cheese snacks.

“None Shall Pass!” Gabe yelled at the sheep, referencing Gandalf’s epic line in Lord Of The Rings. Kona was going a little nuts with curiosity at the nearby wildlife, but handled herself pretty well all in all. Walker, who is utterly fascinated with the sound a cow makes, pointed at The Sentinel and said “Moo.” He then pointed at Kona, who was straining on the leash a bit, and said “Moo.” He’s consistent, for sure.

We made our way back down after enjoying the mountain and river valley view and spent a little time frolicking in the forest and walking the water’s edge before heading home.

So, what did you think?

How would you describe your personal hiking experience level?

Somewhere in the moderate to intermediate level, but that experience level does not factor in the backpack toddler.

On a scale of one to five what difficulty rating would you give this hike & why?

2/5. It was a little steep, for sure, but not long or technically challenging in any way. Again, the cautionary approach to some portions was because of the toddler on my back.

Pros and cons to this hike?

Pros: The views were absolutely breathtaking and we imagine it would have been exponentially better right at the top. The wildlife interaction added some cool factor. It was a doable venture for all family members, and its proximity to river walks and forest trails meant we had a variety of choices in case the kids were fickle.

Cons: We didn’t have enough time to do the loop.

Don’t curb curb appeal

Look at your property. Does it look shabby? Unsafe? Does the exterior of your home look like it needs some TLC, things like tuck-pointing, or brick or stucco repairs? To a househunter, if the outside looks bad they will assume that the inside won’t be any better. The outside can usually tell you how much maintenance was put into the home overall.

Take care of entrances, including the garage and any side doors. Make sure entryways are safe, strong and secure — that also means properly lit. Make any repairs to walkways, steps, the driveway, as well as your home’s exterior. And don’t forget to clean up the yard.

If water is pooling anywhere, you might need to contact a professional grader to regrade the property. If there are overgrown trees and plants, hire a professional landscaper to trim them, or remove any shrubs that might be directing water to the foundation.

You can’t sell square footage people can’t see. Buyers hate clutter, and, the truth is, it can affect indoor air quality. I once worked on a job where piles of stuff blocked the vents around the home, causing serious condensation issues. Get rid of everything you don’t need. Have a garage sale. It doesn’t have to cost you a dime, and you might even make a few bucks.

Do the repairs you’ve been putting off

If your home has electrical problems, fix those first. Once that’s done, repair the drywall with products that are free of, or decrease, volatile organic compounds (and make sure to mention that).

Simple fixes like filling in holes, fixing baseboards, repairing trim and applying a fresh coat of paint go a long way. For not that much cash outlay, it can sweeten the deal.

‘Tis the season for soaking in the sun with a refreshing, cold beer! I have often heard people say, “I can only drink beer when it’s sweltering hot and the beer is ice cold.” To which I say, “Nonsense!” “Fiddle faddle!” Or other such outdated and ridiculous quips. I do this because, typically, the people who say that think that the only beer choices in the world are showcased on television during sporting events. “Rubbish!” I say! To those people, I’d recommend trying something new this balmy summer season. Who knows, you may just develop a taste for the good stuff.

The most obvious style of thirst quenching beer is the lager, which is the style most domestic beer attempts to emulate. Created in what is now Czechoslovakia, the brilliant idea that defines this style was to ferment the beer at cold temperatures. In all other types of beer the yeast floats on top of the beer and eats its way to the bottom, but doing this process in cold temperatures causes the yeast to settle at the bottom and work its way to the top. This drastically changes the flavour of the beer by making the flavours tighter, more subtle and lighter. This makes the lager a crisp beverage that’s easy on the palate and light on the stomach.

A couple of my personal favourites are Steinlager from New Zealand, Mythos from Greece, Czechvar from Czechoslovakia, and Tusker from South Africa.

If you’re a fan of dark beer but find it difficult to drink in the warmer months, try a black lager. Brewed to have the flavour profile of a stout or a porter, the cold fermenting narrows the flavours and the heaviness, making it a robust yet light experience. It’s wonderful to get those flavours of chocolate and coffee in a beer without feeling like you just ate a steak. I’d recommend Okanagen Spring Brewing’s Bavarian Black Lager.

For fans of rich, creamy beer, go try some hefeweizens. There are so many to choose from now. The style comes from Germany (surprising, I know), and is a traditional wheat beer. What makes it unique from other wheat beers is the type of hops that is used. Most hops add bitterness, but these particular hops add a citrusy flavour. Depending on which particular hefeweizen you try, you could potentially taste orange, pineapple, or even banana flavours. Don’t get the wrong impression, they aren’t fruit flavoured like having chunks of fruit in them, the flavours are far more subtle, in the body of the beer itself. Howe Sound brewing makes two hefeweizens that are fantastic. The King Heffy and the 4 Way Fruit Ale. My personal favourite is the German made König Ludwig. Delicious!

Lastly, there are lots of people experimenting with different kinds of flavoured beer. I am a fan of some but not others. I personally feel that a flavoured beer can be great as long as it balances the flavour between beer and additive well. My shortlist for summertime are Mill St. Brewing’s lemon tea beer, Okanagen Spring Brewing’s apricot hefeweizen and Philips ginger beer. All are strongly flavoured without losing the great beer quality for which they are known. My only guilty pleasure for the flavoured category would have to be the Royal Jamaican ginger beer.

There is so much ginger in it that it’s spicy. I love it, especially on a hot day. A beer for the ginger fanatic, I rate it very highly.
