FRONT PAGE

PHOTO CONTEST

As usual, we have accelerated deadlines for our upcoming Dec. 29 and Jan. 5 papers. That can make it hard to come up with relevant photos, especially short staffed...

So here’s your chance to get a photo on the front page of the paper and think like a reporter. What we look for: Faces!

We always prefer faces, the bigger and brighter, the better... But here’s the catch... No posing allowed! Capturing a real moment tells a story, and that’s what we’re all about.

Names!

Everyone in the photo must be identified with first and last names and have given consent (parents must give consent for minors).

Non-seasonal!

By the time these papers come out we’ve usually loaded up on all the December seasonal type coverage and it can be a challenge.

Sharp, sharp, sharp!

We’ve run photos from cell phones before, equipment isn’t what disqualifies a photo for us... But in order to look good printed on newsprint the photo must be sharp. No amount of Photoshop will fix a photo that starts out blurry.

Decent file size!

Again, cell phone photos can work if they’re well-lit to begin with, but make sure email or any programs touching the photo after it’s taken don’t resize it. Because of the nature of news we can’t guarantee what paper will have the front page photo – keep an eye on our Facebook page for more information. Photos not chosen for the front page may still be used within the paper.

Email your photos and information to info@hintonvoice.ca.

SPCA PET OF THE WEEK Pebbles is one of our harder to place kitties, as she had a harder time adjusting to living with other cats when she first arrived, and still has some issues with not liking dogs. She has come along way since then, getting along quite well with the other cats in the facility, and showing us that she can be a very sweet and playful girl. She would be best suited in a home with cat experience and no dogs. Come down and meet all the pets at the Hinton & District SPCA. Call 780-865-2800 or stop by 209 Kelley Rd. www.hintondistrictspca.com hintonspca.blogspot.ca

HEAT TAPE NOTICE For residents living in a mobile home, please check to see if your heat tape is working properly. The water line service (copper line) is exposed to the elements and your line will freeze if your heat tape is not functioning properly. It is the owner’s responsibility to ensure the heat tape is working. Some quick tips include: • check your breaker switch located in the breaker panel to ensure your outside plug-ins are turned on • check to see if the heat tape is physically plugged into an extension cord • use a hair dryer or trouble light to ensure power is available in the extension cord • check heat tape around the copper line and shut-off valve coming out of the ground to ensure it is properly insulated & wrapped and is not exposed to the cold A little preventive maintenance goes a long way in ensuring your pipes do not freeze or burst.
