Wendy is survived by her 4 precious grandchildren as well 3 brothers and many good friends and relatives.

In keeping with Wendy’s wishes cremation has taken place and there will be no Memorial Services held. Wendy will be laid to rest with her grandfather in Grand Forks, BC at a later date.

The family suggests that if desired, a donation can be made to the charity of the donor’s choice in Wendy’s memory.

The Resident Care Foundation would like to thank the following for their efforts and generosity in helping us to fundraise for our organization.

The Resident Care Foundation board would like to thank the following sponsors and volunteers for making the Silver Hair Tea and the Wheelchair Marathon a huge success this year.

A special thank you to Freson IGA (hill) for supplying the food and drinks served free of charge to the residents at the barbeque plus Tim Horton’s for donating the coffee and donuts also served free of charge to the residents. Thank you to Todd Seabrooke who emptied his wallet and pockets and gave all the money he had in them to the Resident Care Foundation. It came to $200.00. Thank you also to Jacky Mo for paying for all the sundaes for the residents and their helpers that were at the Dairy Queen behind him in line. It’s these generous acts of kindness that makes Hinton such a great place to live. Thanks to all the volunteers that helped with setting up and taking down the barricades, preparing the location for the barbeque, cooking and helping wheel the residents around.

Thanks to Parks West Mall Manager Sherry Griffiths and her staff for all their help making sure tables and chairs were available and anything we needed.

We would like to thank the Town of Hinton for donating the use of the handi-bus and thanks to Sabrina Ball for coordinating the three busloads of residents and their helpers from the Good Samaritan Mountain View Centre so they were able to attend both events. Thank you to Coreen Unger for volunteering her time to drive the handi-bus for both events. Thanks also to Vern Koch for volunteering his time to drive the Pine Valley Lodge bus also for both days. Thanks to the Hinton School of Dance students plus Abby and Emily for doing such a great job of serving the seniors at the tea.

Winners of the door prizes for first place; was won by Ingrid Koelbl a bath basket donated by Elaine Koch, second place; was won by Vivian Bethinger a wine basket donated by Lynda Jonson, third place; was won by Jack Richardson a beautiful afghan made by Yvette Vinson.

We would like to thank the valley Freson IGA and the volunteers that worked the Barbeque during Seniors Week. The valley Freson IGA hosted a barbeque with donations going to the Resident Care Foundation. Funds raised came to $861.80.

I would also like to thank again Sherry Griffiths and Heather Beaudette for helping to organize the Mexican Fiesta & Poker Walk out at Parks West Mall also during Seniors Week. Winners of the poker walk: First place went to Linda Rosendahl a gift certificate for a dinner for two at the Holiday Inn, second place was won by Norene Cooper a wine basket, third place was won by Linda LeBouef a bath set. A special thank you to the Hinton Youth Centre for making the big Mexican hat Piñata for the seniors to hit. The strong-armed Mrs Kay Bennett struck down the Piñata with a mighty blow.

Herb Close from Edson won the 50/50 draw then turned his winings of $250.00 over to the Resident Care Foundation.

The Resident Care Foundation board truly appreciates the continued support from the whole community as we continue to work to support and improve the quality of life for the residents in Hinton’s care facilities plus the disable and elderly out in the community.

What a great family event this is.

We particularly enjoyed the contest where participants had to race to thaw a frozen t-shirt, and the first one that put it on won!

THE FUTURE OF LAND IN HINTON PART 2

Decisions regarding the future of land in Hinton will be determined through a review of two main planning documents: the Municipal Development Plan (MDP) and the Land Use Bylaw (LUB). Through the next five weeks, the Town of Hinton will be discussing five issues related to the MDP and LUB and we are looking to members of the community to give their opinions on issues that affect how our town grows and where areas of improvement are.

HINTON’S SHOPPING DISTRICTS This week’s issue is the presence and revitalization of “downtown” shopping areas in the Town of Hinton. Many communities have a downtown area that is the heart and focal point of the community. Often, they are walkable areas where residents shop at businesses, enjoy food at restaurants, or recreate in central green space.

These areas can feature higher density housing such as apartments, townhomes, as well as mixed use development where businesses and residential housing exist within the same building.

Hinton is a town that is spread out, and with our unique geography, we have non-traditional downtown areas. The Mountain View shopping district on the hill and the Hardisty shopping district in the valley share the downtown role in our community.

In Hinton we have become used to having shopping choices in both the valley and the hill areas. The way this topic relates to the Municipal Development Plan and Land Use Bylaw review, is a question not only of whether this arrangement is working in our community, but whether there are opportunities where the municipality can make improvements.

Revitalizing shopping districts can contribute to a community’s overall economic success.

Attracting and retaining a variety of retail, hospitality and service businesses gives people more reasons to come to these areas more often. To be successful, revitalization efforts need to address an area’s look, feel and function, as well as the mix of commercial, cultural, residential and recreational uses. Introducing higher density residential development, such as apartments, cooperative housing or duplexes near

these shopping areas has the benefit of providing a local customer base, as well as creating a safer after-hours environment with ‘eyes on the street.’

There are a few key considerations when looking to revitalize a shopping district. Already, the Town has increased the Mountain View shopping district’s footprint and allowed houses to be storefronts for businesses along Sherwood Street block adjacent to Pembina Ave – the real estate or lawyer’s office in that area are examples. This is done through direct control zoning, where Council has the ultimate approval of a business applying for a commercial use in this identified zone.

Options for revitalization can include the sharing of commercial and residential uses within the same building. For example, an apartment building that has an embedded business on its ground floor. Think of the last time you were on Jasper Ave. in Edmonton. Both sides of the road feature apartments (higher density housing) and businesses located on the ground floor of office and apartment buildings (mixed use).

Business Revitalization Zones have also been very successful in many towns and cities. They allow merchants and property owners to pool their resources to improve their business district through physical improvements, joint promotions and sponsored traffic-building events to draw people to the area.

So think about your ideal community, and how our “downtown” areas factor into that vision. The ideas that come forward during this process are important to ensuring the plans and bylaws that we create reflect the direction for the town that the community supports.

Do Hinton’s traditional commercial districts of Hardisty and/or Mountain View serve the “downtown” role?

If revitalizing the Hardisty and/or Mountain View Commercial Districts is the best approach to creating a downtown, which five (5) initiatives listed below are most important for the Town to undertake?

1. Build higher density housing, such as apartments or townhomes near or close to the two shopping areas.

2. Establish a Business Revitalization Zone (BRZ) to enhance our shopping areas and attract customers through streetscape and facade improvement, promotions and festivals.

3. Make it easier to have outdoor eating areas / cafes by changing zoning regulations.

4. Improve safety and cleanliness.

5. Work with owners and commercial property owners to fill vacant shop fronts.

6. Offer grants to have business owners improve their storefronts.

7. Provide parking flexibility to encourage an increase in growth and redevelopment of an area.

8. Create a more attractive pedestrian environment.

9. Ensure shopping areas allow for year-round and winter use (eg. skating rink, Christmas tree / lights).

10. Make the two shopping districts friendlier and inclusive for seniors and persons with disabilities.

HYDRANT FLUSHING PROGRAM The Town of Hinton will be conducting its annual UniDirectional Hydrant Flushing Program commencing the week of July 7th, 2014. We anticipate the flushing program will be completed by end of August. Please watch for signs posted advising when hydrant flushing is in your neighbourhood.
