Student Life on Campus
Every student requirement is looked into carefully and due diligence is ensured so that our students are supported and guided towards an enriching learning experience. Below are few of the services offered to students.
Student Council
Advertisement
HITS Student Council has been constituted as per the UGC norms. The members are from different branches of study. The Council is headed by a President and the members comprise, students, boys and girls representatives from hostels, sports, cultural wing, NSS, NCC, etc. The elected Council members should strictly adhere to the rules and regulations of the institution. They must also manage and extend their support when any event or extra-curricular activities are held at HITS.
Student Welfare Committee
Student Welfare Committee is headed by Dean-Administration. Faculty members of various departments actively work under this committee. They supervise the activities of the representatives of the Student Council; and aid in enhancing the discipline and development of students. The Committee provides right direction, counselling and guide students for further improvement. It also extends their help in improving the amenities for the students which are required in the campus. The Student Welfare Committee meets once in a month to review the welfare activities.
The Hindustan Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility actively involves itself in eradicating extreme hunger and poverty, promoting education, promoting gender equality, empowering women, reducing child mortality, and improving maternal health, combating human immunodeficiency virus, acquired immune deficiency syndrome, malaria and other diseases. The Centre also works on environmental sustainability, employment enhancing vocational skills and social business projects. It ensures that the funds allotted by the Central and the State Governments for socioeconomic development and relief, welfare of the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, other backward classes, minorities and women reaches the needy.
Career Guidance
Assistance in career counselling, on-campus interviewing schedules, employment opportunities, job vacancy postings, and assistance with career search correspondence such as resumes, and cover letters, career workshops and seminars, annual career fairs and referral to other campus agencies are given to students.
The Centre for Continuing Education and Career Development provides Campus Placement and Corporate Training Programmes on core competency developments like employability skills, and awareness on employment avenues. The various courses offered by the Centre are:

Counselling/Mentoring Service (HCS)
With recognition of vital role in the preparation of next generation’s intellectual leaders, Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science has taken the step of student counselling/mentoring system in its campus. Whilst, the role of Class Advisor usually is limited to guide students in academic programmes, the role of mentor is centered on a commitment to advance students’ career through an interpersonal engagement facilitating guidance, experience and expertise. The fact that today’s students come from an increasingly diverse backgrounds may add a layer of complexity to this life within the campus. It may be likely that the stresses they have in their day-to-day life will at some time interfere with their academic achievements and personal growth. The Counseling Centre of HITS helps students deal effectively with such concerns. The centre is staffed with couple of senior faculty members with predilection for such an avocation. The Counseling Centre is thoroughly committed to the need for confidentiality in student/client/client/counselor communications. Therefore, confidentiality of student information is maintained with professional standards of ethical practice and conduct.
Mode of Counselling in HITS
Each student is allotted a mentor and is under the constant watch. 20 students come under one mentor as ratio 1:20. The mentor meets students at least once in a month, and beyond that according to the needs and offers guidance. If the mentor feels that more professional assistance is required, the student will be directed to the Student Counsellor of the Institution. The Counsellor is professionally trained so as to conduct academic counselling, career counselling and counselling related to mental as well as health issues. Utmost confidentiality and ethical practice is maintained. The progress of the student is constantly reported to the Department of Student Affairs.

Women’s Counselling Cell
The Cell provides personal assistance to women who need help in the Institution. The members of the cell are proficient and are open-minded to listen to the problems of women and provide practical guidance to resolve their problems. Dr. Angeline Prabhavathi, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering can be contacted for any assistance.
Equal Opportunity Cell
▪ The Equal Opportunity Cell was established to address the issues related to SC/ST, OBC and Minorities and the differently-abled students on a continual basis. The Cell
takes effort to: Conduct short term courses for imparting employable skills for students from the less privileged community. Ensure that there is no discrimination on the grounds of disability or minority status. Redress grievances of differently-abled and students belonging to the weaker section of the society and suggest amicable solutions to their problems.

Grievance Redressal Committee
As per the regulations of UGC an Ombudsman has been appointed and a Grievance Redressal Committee has been formed in order to address the grievances of the students and parents.
A register is available at the Office of Dean- Academics to record the complaints of the aggrieved students or parents. Students or parents who seek to redress their grievance can record the same in the register.
On receipt of the complaint, the Dean -Academics shall convene the Grievance Redressal Committee Meeting.
After conducting a detailed enquiry, the Convenor of the Grievance Committee shall communicate its decisions within 10 days from receipt of the complaint to the aggrieved students or parents.
If the students and their parents are not satisfied with the decision of the Committee, they can file an application through the register in the Dean-Academics office for redressal of the grievance by the Ombudsman.
On receipt of the appeal for redressal by the Ombudsman, Dean-Academics shall forward the same within five days of receipt of the appeal to the Ombudsman for his perusal and necessary actions.
For speedy redressal of grievances, the Ombudsman shall exercise the powers vested on him to hear those grievances and will ensure to solve the grievances within a month.

Examination Grievance Redressal Cell
Grievance regarding the conduct of examinations and issues related to it may be addressed to the Exam Grievance Cell by staff members and students.

Attendance Grievance Redressal Cell
The Attendance Grievance Cell redresses the grievances/complaints of students regarding attendance related issues. Students are required to submit the grievances/complaints regarding the attendance to Dean (Academics) in the prescribed format along with the remarks of concerned HOD and supporting documents, for a fair redressal of attendance related issues.
Hindustan Toastmasters Club (HTC)
Toastmasters International (TI) is a non-profit educational organization that helps its members to improve communication, public speaking, and leadership skills. The Hindustan Toastmasters Club aims at developing these skills of its staff and students. The members of the club meet once in a week and activities are held as per the norms of the Toastmasters Club.
Hindustan Health Centre
Hindustan Health Centre provides medical diagnosis and treatment for a variety of illnesses and injuries to the students. Campus doctor is available during the working hours. Free checkup and treatment is provided. According to the requirement, students are also referred to Chettinad Health City at Kelambakkam which is adjacent to the campus. Vaccination Camps for serious diseases like measles, mumps, tetanus and hepatitis B are conducted periodically.
Other Services
DTP Centre
A full-fledged Desktop Publishing Centre aids students access printing facilities required for any academic purpose. Assignments, project work, thesis documents etc. can be printed and bounded here as per requirements at nominal charges.
Banking/ATM Facilities
Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) is situated at campus to cater to the banking needs of the students and staff members. ATM facility is also available on the campus. Besides IOB, many other leading banks are available within close proximity.
Cafeteria
A well-furnished Cafeteria serving Continental and Indian cuisines is located centrally in the Institution. Besides, fast food and other eateries are also available. 'Garage Café’ is another food court in HITS that has a rugged garage appearance and caters to the needs of the food lovers on campus. Both continental and Indian cuisines are served here.
Departmental Store
Necessary stationery, accessories, refreshments etc., are available at reasonable prices from the Departmental Store run intra the campus. The store is opened between 7.00 a.m. and 7.00 p.m.
Laundry Service
Laundry and dry cleaning services are available at campus only for residential staff and hostel students. The Laundromat provides modern equipment for laundry services.
Transport
The institution operates a fleet of 50 buses, both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned, to all the important city spots for the benefit of the students and staff. The services of buses are utilized for industrial visits and excursions as well. Scores of public transport buses ply via campus and day scholars can avail service at any time.
Ambulance Facility
Ambulance service is available round the clock for the emergency use of Staff & Students. The Campus Clinic can be contacted for the same.
Security
A round the clock security system with CCTV surveillance is provided at vantage points like the main gate, main entrance, hostels, fast food area, parking spot, students centre etc. Extra security for female students as per UGC norms are followed to ensure their stay in a safe and secure environment.
Internet Policy
Usage of Wireless infrastructure in hostels and common places is to enhance the accessibility of internet for academic purposes and to browse exclusive online resource for students and staff.
Wi-Fi internet will be available in Hostels and Common areas between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. The availability and strength of the WiFi signal may vary based on the location.
As per IT data policy of HITS free Wi-Fi usage quota is limited per year to prevent misuse. UG students are provided 12GB, PG students are provided 16GB and Research
Scholars/Staff 20GB per year. Extra data usage will be charged. Yearly/Semester data usage policy may vary as per the directions of the Institution
During working hours, mobile/smartphone can be used for reference only after proper permission from the faculty.
The Wi-fi access points provided in hostels and common areas are the properties of the Institution and any damage or loss of the equipment will be considered as a serious breach of the Institution’s code of conduct. A strict disciplinary action will be initiated on the students who are found guilty for the loss or damages. In the incident of any loss or damage to the wireless infrastructure, it will be assessed and the same will be recovered from all the students who are residing in that floor/building/hostel.
Wi-Fi Access Guidelines
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), statutory body that controls the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in India has directed all Universities to take strong steps in strengthening the security of Wi-Fi networks. Users of HITS Wi-Fi services must be registered with authorities and ensure that no other mobile networks, other than the registered one, is allowed in Wi-Fi network access. Hence the Institution has the right to do lawful monitoring/ logging of all internet users' activity and share it with statutory bodies, if required.
Any user or device that accesses Wi-Fi network shall:
Protect the user account from unauthorized users by not sharing the credentials to others for any reasons/means. Student will be held responsible for any misuse of his/her account. Maximum number of concurrent (simultaneous) logins for a user account is ONE device either laptop/ tablet/smartphone.
Use the internet judiciously and adhere to the policies of the Institution.
Incidences of actual or suspected noncompliance of this policy should be reported immediately.
Enforcement and Sanctions
The Institution reserves the right to disable one’s wireless network access for any of the following reasons if found:
Access to wireless internet is only an extended service. Availability of wireless services solely depends on the discretion of the Institution and it has the right to stop/ interrupt the services at any given point of time, if required for any technical purpose.
Allowing other individuals (e.g. friends, coworkers, multiple devices etc.) to use one’s account.
Attempt to tamper/hacking the servers/ network or overloading IT resources and assets by excessive bandwidth usage or using misconfigured devices or knowingly using a false identity.
Download/Use/Store or transmit illegal copies of copyright materials or patented software/movies/songs etc. is violation of the regulatory laws that involve protection of data or privacy.
Violation of this policy and guidelines is a serious offense and the Institution holds the right to permanently seize the laptop/devices and/ or initiate strong disciplinary action, including termination from the institution if need arises based on the severity of non-compliance.
Hostel Accommodation
HITS offers excellent residential accommodation for the students. The residential complex includes staff quarters and guest houses which can accommodate more than 1500 students and guests. Presently, eight hostels are available on the campus; of which, five are for boys and three for girls. Due to limited accommodation, students from distant places are given preference. The institution provides refurbished, clean rooms when students checks in. Students have a choice to opt either Ac/Non-Ac rooms designed to provide an ideal environment conductive for academic pursuit. The hostels provide mess facilities with both Indian and Continental foods served.

Facilities:
Modern amenities with both AC and non-AC rooms including attached rest rooms, geysers and exhaust fans are available. Each hostel is provided with a dining hall, reading hall, round the clock WiFi connectivity, continuous medical and transport facilities. All rooms are provided with beds, desks, study chairs, tables, and closets. Canteen and fast food centers function between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. Bus facilities can be availed by hostel residents to visit the city on Sundays and other holidays. Laundry services are available for the convenience of the students. Indoor recreational facilities like Table Tennis, Badminton, Gymnasium and other indoor games keeps young minds and body active. Hostel facilities are earmarked in such a way, that the students can feel themselves at home and pursue their studies in a serene atmosphere. Functioning of Library till 8 p.m. is absolutely a huge advantage for students to utilize. Each hall has a dining and indoor recreation facilities.
Admission to the Hostels
Admission into the residential halls is done after careful scrutiny of the student’s performance and conduct. Applications for admission to the hostels should be made through a form prescribed for the purpose. A student seeking hostel admission must give a written undertaking that he/she will abide by the rules of the hostel. Membership to these hostels automatically ceases when the academic session, for which the student has enrolled, ends. The parent or guardian should vouch the same. All issues related to the Hostel admission are dealt by the Chief Warden. Hostel accommodation is subject to availability.
Hostel Rules
Students are expected to maintain utmost silence in the residence halls during study hours.
A Campus Resident (CR) will have to stay in the room allotted to him/her with two or more inmates.
Campus Residents of each room are jointly held responsible for the furniture and other fittings; and any damage to the hostel property is recoverable from them.
Guests are strictly prohibited from entering the hostel premises without prior permission of the warden.
Resident students will not be permitted to stay outside the campus at nights. There are separate leave rules for the students residing in the Halls.
Students may be expelled from the hostel on violation of rules and misconduct such as theft, ragging, abnormal behaviour, use of drugs and alcohol, being indiscipline, non-payment of fees, etc.
A student expelled on disciplinary grounds shall forfeit his/her fees and deposit.
Communication to Parents
Parents are regularly informed about their ward’s progression in attendance, academics, behaviour, etc. This communication is carried out through the following:

Parents can use their ward’s Roll Number as User Name and Date of Birth as Password to access the link.
Monthly Progress Report Cards are sent through post or email.

Service for Parents
A modern guest house is available on the campus for parents/guests visiting HITS. AC and Non -AC rooms are provided on request at a nominal payment. Booking reservations can be done with the Hostel Manager.

All students representing HITS will be provided with uniforms and other sports gears. Professional Trainers with expertise in sports are available to train students who represent HITS in tournaments held at the State, National and International levels.
National Cadet Corps (NCC)
The National Cadet Corps (Air wing) of the HITS is affiliated to 1 (TN) Air Squadran NCC, Tambaram. The allotted strength for NCC is 150. Enthusiastic Cadets (boys and girls) are enrolled into the NCC programme every year. The NCC cadets should compulsorily attend a 12-day camp in an academic year apart from other special camps such as National Integration Camp, Vayu Sena Camp, Air Force Attachment Camp, etc. The cadets are given rigorous physical training which includes March Past, Range Firing, Skeet Shooting, Microliter Flying, Parasailing and so on. Team work and discipline are very important qualities that are instilled in the cadets during training.
National Service Scheme (NSS)
The National Service Scheme (NSS) is one of the important service clubs that actively involves in various social outreach programmes. The objective of this service organization is to develop students’ personality through community service. The intake for the NSS unit is 100. As a Central Government sponsored programme, NSS addresses issues like need for afforestation, education, organize blood donation camps, medical camps, provide sustaining old age homes and orphanages.
Youth Red Cross (YRC)
Youths represent a substantial part of the membership of Red Cross for its humanitarian commitment. Young volunteers can make a significant contribution to meet the needs of the most vulnerable people within their local communities through Youth Red Cross programme. This is designed in order to involve young people in the movement and its activities not only as workers but also as beneficiaries.
Cultural
Students at HITS are always encouraged to participate in cultural activities and have won several laurels at inter-collegiate cultural competitions conducted pan India. “Fresh Face”, a competition sponsored every year by the Times of India, spots the most talented and promising freshers of city colleges. Students have bagged most of the winners title in the Fresh Face of Chennai events. Yarona, Graffiti Rock Concert, Music Orchestra, Dance Fest, Film Festivals, Colors of Youth and K-Pop are also conducted regularly on campus. The institution also encourages students to participate in all the cultural events hosted on and off campus.
Musical Activities
Numerous musical activities are available on campus for the cultural enrichment of students.
Students can register in the Music Club and can choose musical instrument of their choice and be trained by a Music Trainer. They can also join music groups like the HITS Choir and HITS Music Band and get periodical training. They can also participate in cultural events on and off campus.
Dance Academy
The Spring Boots Academy of Dance trains students in both Western and Eastern dance styles. B-Boying, Freestyle, Hip-hop, Techno, Jazz, Locking and Popping, Tango, etc. are offered under the western dance style. Besides, training is also offered in Zumba, Aerobics, Folk, Bollywood and Classical forms of dance.
Recreational and Creative Activities
Athena Literary Club
The Athena literary club is formed to tap into the pool of talents among our students and to exhibit their creative literary talent. The club aims to foster students’ love for language, literary creativity and to provide an avenue for self-expression beyond the scope of curriculum. The Literary Club also acts as an impetus for enhancement of students’ literary skills, to develop their fondness to the world of literature and eventually to improve their spoken and writing skills. It is a creative concoction of literary activities with a sole purpose of enhancing students’ self-confidence and interpersonal skills in the multicultural world of today’s society. Extempore, essay writing, creative writing, poetry writing, debate, elocution, skit, quiz and reading are some of the prominent activities of the club.
Masquerade Theatre Club
The Drama club gears to provide an opportunity for students who have inclination towards art, acting. Activities such as role-play, script writing, and improvisation are the integral part of the Masquerade Theatre Club. It brings about a platform for students to explore their imaginative world and fine-tune their communication skills. In the end, it is the goal of the club to enable students to express themselves imaginatively and creatively.
Gymnasium
The state-of-the-art gymnasium facilities can be used by both staff and students to maintain physical fitness. The gym is opened from 6 a.m. to 8.a.m. and 4.30 p. m. to 7.30 p.m. Professional trainers are available to train students in Boxing, Kung Fu, Parkour and Horse Riding after class hours.
