TO MAKE EVERY MAN A SUCCESS AND NO MAN A FAILURE Drive Your Dreams

“Only a nation built on strong basic principles of economics will stand the test of time. It is for every one of us to think about where this country is headed and see what we can do individually and collectively to help India come out of the red. We are a billionstrong nation of talented and diligent people. We don’t really need to leave our home ground in search of greater pastures. It breaks my heart when I see brilliant and educated youngsters queuing up in front of the foreign embassies for visas. I wish I could tell them there are plenty of things they can do right here in India. Together we have to build a better nation.

I am reminded of the words of Martin Luther King Jr., “Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree.”

This is what I have tried to do.

I wish I had the strength to do more.”

Preamble

The Birth of an Institution

In the early days of 1965, Late Dr. K.C.G. Verghese took up teaching assignments in Automobile Engineering subjects. His well-acquainted subject knowledge and inquisitiveness to the know-hows of the Automotive industry worldwide drew in a large number of students. While coaching for British Automobile Examination then, Dr. K.C.G. Verghese realized that Indian students could easily clear them with minimum preparation. It was at this moment, students promised Dr. K.C.G. Verghese to bring over a hundred students from Sing pore and Malaysia if he were to set up an institution on his own. The idea dawned upon Dr. K.C.G. Verghese as he felt the time has come to start his own venture; and very soon, Hindustan Engineering Training Centre (HETC) was started in 1966 as an educational institution intended mainly for foreign students. This irresistible quest for knowledge eventually paved way for the commencement of other Institutions under the Hindustan Group of Institutions (HGI).

The citadel of an educational institution attracts students if it caters to their holistic development. Hindustan Institute of Technology & Science (HITS) has been providing world class education for students for over five decades, considering the vision of the late Founder Chairman, Dr. KCG Verghese, “To Make Everyman a Success and No Man a Failure”. I am happy to note that there were several events, collaborative projects, and laudable efforts by staff members to ensure the completion of a successful academic year.

This academic year witnessed several accomplishments from the Management. Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese was endowed with the role of Chancellor, while Mr. Ashok Verghese, assumed charge as Pro Chancellor and Dr. Aby Sam as the Executive Director of HITS. Impressive accolades and awards were won by the institution, faculty and students. In the global rankings we have won the covetous IET accreditation for nine BTech programmes viz., Aeronautical, Aerospace, Automobile, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Information Technology and Mechatronics.

An important milestone this academic year is the establishment of several new facilities like Centre for Underwater Robotics and Communication, Royal Enfield Experiential Training Hub, Mark Zuckerberg Data Science Laboratory, all these new facilities are a boon for our staff and students to pursue their research and training in their respective fields.

Convocation is an important event that happens every academic year. This year we had 1,852 students graduating and 52 rank holders. The 9th edition of Dr. KCG Verghese Endowment Lecture was held in a pompous manner, and the 3rd edition of TedX was also held at HITS. Several MOUs were signed maintaining the tempo of international collaborations–a few of them are DDB-German Academy of Digital Education, DAAD Academic exchange programmes, Letter of Intent with District Rural Development Agency, Govt. of Tamil Nadu and City of Trier, Germany. It is heartening to note that students were benefited by the KEB Hana Bank Scholarship, Korea which presented scholarships to 20 students of HITS.

Students at HITS were exposed to quality interaction with eminent speakers, researchers and academicians. Youth talks by Ms. Kanimozhi, MP and the celebration of world space week in collaboration with SHAR, ISRO were some of the hallmark events. Several sports and cultural events were also held during the academic year.

I would like to conclude by welcoming the new batch of students to HITS and assure them that they will be provided a congenial environment for holistic development.

Congratulations to the HCELLENCE 2023 editorial team!

Since its inception in 1966 by Dr. K.C.G. Verghese, Hindustan Group of Institutions (HGI), Chennai, stands as a beacon of knowledge and intellectual growth. Today, HGI resonates as a premier educational institution echoing both domestically and internationally.

Since 2020, over the years of my service at HGI, I have been a part of our significant milestone, the Centre for Open and Distance Education (CODE). Born out of necessity in the times of COVID, CODE now stands testament to our commitment towards quality, accessibility, and flexibility in education. The Centre now serves as a powerful engine for freedom in education, bridging boundaries, and presenting opportunities to those bound by constraints. It epitomises the versatility that digital age education must offer, amplifying our commitment to nurturing education that is reachable, adaptable, and of high standards.

Remember, students, we at HGI are not mere providers of education, but instillers of passion, resilience, and adaptability. You are the keepers of a great legacy and the architects of our shared future. I urge you, dare to dream, imbibe knowledge, and continue this tradition of excellence threaded from our Founder’s vision. I first thank you for inviting me for the 13th Convocation. It is indeed a great pleasure to be here with you all. Congratulations to all the students who are graduating today. I also congratulate their parents and staff for shaping them and facilitating them to graduate.

Dear graduates welcome to the real world and exciting world. The process of transformation begins today Whatever the job you get, be sincere to yourself and your organization so that you will excel and get bigger opportunities. You are the ambassador of this University and it is your responsibility to bring laurels and fame to your alma mater by reaching greater heights.

India is fortunate have young minds like you whose talents need to be fruitfully utilized for the growth of our country. Now, as a graduate you have focussed and specialised in a specific field. But it is important to know many other related subjects in a multidisciplinary world. So, learn domains that are related to your discipline of study in order to face the competitive world.

In independent India we have many success stories in terms of technological developments, innovation, and solutions. But we are mostly technology followers rather than a leader in many areas. We should aspire and dream to be a leader or pathfinder in innovation and technology before celebrating 100 years of Independence.

I conclude with food for thought essential for a successful life. Ensure to maintain your honesty and integrity in your life process and have fire in your belly. Always remember that there is no substitute for hard work. Be positive and think differently. Learn something new every day. Do not be afraid of taking rational and calculated risk in your life. Set your goal and work towards achieving the same. I wish you all the very best as you go along your life journey.

My greetings to each one of you on the 13th Convocation of HITS. I would like to thank the Institute for honouring me with honoris causa. I deemed it a great honour for me and for entire the space Community. Many years back, the passion of Dr. K. C. G. Verghese for engineering in aircrafts and automobiles inspired him to establish an institution and today we see the result as HITS has created other engineering domains and a very large number of students graduating from its citadels.

I am also happy to have inaugurated the Centre of Excellence in Satellite Technology in an age

where space technology is booming. In the history of human evolution, I find the present days to be the best times because we live in the age of science and technology. As technology is transforming at a faster pace, it is difficult to envision a future based on these two. So, whatever domain you have specialised will never be used in your life. But you have been trained to be capable to equip and handle the transformation in future. So, as you graduate, look out for what you should be and how you should be in shaping your career in this changing world. I suggest you to be a T-shaped personality who has both the horizontal and vertical bars. The vertical bar defines you as an expert in your domain and the horizontal bar shows the breadth of understanding you have for the other domains.

Furthermore, I suggest you to develop a quality of respecting domains other than yours. Through this you will start learning the other domains too. And, if you can really get to know something more than your expert domain, then you can be an expert in multiple domains. All this put together makes a person perfect to handle complex problems of tomorrow’s world.

I thank HITS for honouring personalities from the space sector as well as from the religious sector. I wish the Institution great days ahead.

Rt. Rev. Joseph Mar Barnabas Suffragan Metropolitan

I am deeply honoured and humbled to express my gratitude to the Hindustan University for honouring me in such a significant way. I was a priest in this city and I am still a great admirer of this land and people. I believe that Tamil Nadu has a distinct power and spirit to nurture life. The land carries the heritage of hospitality and love.

Years ago, the land welcomed Dr K C G. Verghese and it is here where all his vision, passion and ambitions were formed, groomed and flourished. This is well reflected in his two beautiful lines:

“To Make Every Man a Success and No Man a Failure.” I am happy to say that his mission is still

blows through this great Institution. Hindustan University plays such a big part in developing the potential and talent of tens of thousands of students who come from different parts of the world.

Being a priest is an invitation to serve God by serving mankind. However as committed to follow Jesus Christ, I have long been convinced that the future of humanity is an interfaith. Compassion is the most gracious virtue that moves and enlightens the world. Education makes one compassionate and sustains harmony.

India is a land of many faiths, and only tolerance and love can preserve the beauty and harmony of this land. The beauty of the land is also amplified by our distinct wisdom and knowledge. Many eminent scholars and scientists have emerged from our nation. The graduates of this Hindustan University are a testimony to the whole world as they are equipped and prepared to face the future with confidence.

Dear graduates, you have a great future ahead and I encourage you to aim for the sky with the knowledge you have acquired from this University. Always believe that God has a purpose for all his creations which is distinct and unique. May all of us be and increasingly become science of Hope. Thank you very much. May the Good Lord bless us all.

Lord Waverley Member of British Parliament, United Kingdom

I deem it an honour to be here in India and in Chennai in particular. The relationship with India ranks alongside the most important for the United Kingdom. A free, independent and democratic India is a powerhouse that will play a pivotal role in world affairs and commands attention and respect. For the past few days, I have travelled around your country and I am taking back a very clear message that India is a country that the United Kingdom needs.

There is much to be gained in strengthening an already strong relationship with deep across the board interaction. The United Kingdom should never take India for granted. At the moment,

the negotiators of India and UK are discussing on a free trade agreement in order to benefit the citizenry of both the countries. With the opportunities that exist with India, I understand the country has created a framework for freight and logistics and this will help in the cooperation between our two countries.

India, to me, represents real opportunity and you are going to be pivotal in world affairs. The world needs you students who are coming into play exactly at the right time. Given all the challenges there are in the world, you will have a very clear responsibility to guide the world in a direction that will benefit all. So, with those short words I wish all those here today congratulations. Wish you well! You are the future and I am so honoured to be here in your country.

A hearty congratulations to all the graduates for your great achievement. I know you have all gone through a lot to get here and you are standing here at the pinnacle of your engineering degree. In many ways it is just a beginning. I do recognize all the hardships gone through by you, your parents and faculty. But at the end what matters is that you have graduated.

So, what next is the big question on everyone’s mind. On one side you have a sense that you have achieved something and on the other side you have an uncertainty that you are just starting out in life. You will have the urge to achieve something. Now, you must make a choice

between a normal life and a life that urges you to change the world. I believe that every single person can change the world if they believe in themselves.

Currently industry is looking for people who are multidisciplinary. We are looking at people who can play the intersections; who can have a conversation with somebody from a completely different discipline. So, whether you are taking up a job or starting up a company or pursuing higher studies in a foreign university, always remember to be at the intersection of disciplines.

Confidence is the most important facet in one’s life. Also, try to be inquisitive by questioning even the basic inventions of the world. This leads to innovation and that spark of innovation is what is going to drive us as a country and you in your personal career.

Wish you all success!

I congratulate the members of Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science for organizing the World Space Week 2022 and the Space Exhibition of ISRO. I congratulate the management, staff and students for conducting this event. I also greet Dr. Sivathanu Pillai for his constant support and motivation towards the government school students.

In India, space technology is based on the saying “bicycle to a billion dreams” because we were not recognized in the field. But today India has made tremendous progress in rocket science and space technology. The Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil, Mr. M. K. Stalin has been constantly encouraging research in space technology. He urges students to contribute in innovating

new technologies that will lead the nation to be the forerunner in space technology. Students must be proactive and involve themselves in research so that out nation stays in the forefront in space technology.

Once again, I heartily congratulate Hindustan University for their unwavering support to the students. I wish the Institution all success.

It is a proud and memorable moment in life. Students were attentive. I am really impressed about the various innovations made by Hindustan University. There were so many departments offering programmes relevant to the present day. I hope students will benefit through these departments to get good placements. Hindustan has always been a second home for me, ever since I first joined the college It always thought me useful lessons in life. Apart from education, which is already up to the mark, Hindustan

always focused on strengthening student’s social life, practical skills and promoted exchanges between students from all around the world. The relation between the students and the faculty of the campus is something that cannot be looked off. The faculty supported the students in almost the all the ways within in their reach and always been a good friends to them. The Department of Automobile Engineering in particular has always assisted the students. It’s because of the department, I was able to visit a university in Germany and get valuable experience. I would like to thank the Department of Placement and Training for striving to provide the students with jobs and always putting their best to bring various kinds of companies for the campus recruitments. Because of all these I was able to get into a company like, Wheels India(TVS). I consider myself lucky to be a part of the Hindustan family.

Words and Wounds

M.A. English - First year

There's volumes of poetry right beneath my skin. To put them on paper, and take them from within Would mean cutting myself open, Delving past that even Into the very marrow of my soul. But before that, I need a mirror in my hands

To catch my heart's raw reflections: Both the carnations blooming in the tender parts And the ugly, broken creature hiding in the dark. It should be easy to line up some pretty words But my fingers and tongue are cowards, Because to speak, write and recite Is to break myself into pieces And beg the world to perceive The very essence of me. How terrifying it is to be seenTo lay out the mosaic of your person And let strangers enter your safe haven, To trace your fault lines with hands and eyes, To give them the power to judge and criticize. But I'm afraid I know no better road to healing

No other method that won't leave me bleeding

So I write out my bruises and wounds, In the hope that I'll know wholeness soon And feel the sun rise in my chest. And everytime I use the ink of my being

To write every letter, word, line and verse, My mind's chaotic choir sings a little less worse. And everyone that peers into the ocean of my soul, Makes me believe that I'm a little less alone.

I wish I could be you.

A thousand times you get hit by the buffeting winds, the slashing rain and the angry sun. But still you stand, and still you smile; Your smiles never fade away.

People of the billboards,

Please let me into your kingdom.

No! Please don't leave me out here alone. Here alone, where there are no smiles as strong as yours and no faces as finely chiseled as yours. No! Please don't make me go!

See my smile, I pray.

It surely is worthy of love?!

Surely?!

People of the billboards, Villains, wretched villains laughing at me. Down at my vain smile, And at a million other desperate lives.

I see you now, for what you are. Your smiles are gone,

Torn by the persisting winds. No one admires you now. And none dare to look up at you. For they used to see what they wanted to be, But now they see haunted reflections, and forgotten promises. People of the billboards, The high and mighty cut outs, Immortality is not your suit. For though your smile is a thing of divine beauty, it is only a fabric wide, and a fabric away from inevitable time.

The Road Taken

Ever got attached to routes? I did!

The roads once I used daily

Seemed new to me.

It was a mere bus travel

But this day it helped me travel to the past

Evocating those days when I slept, when I wept

When I prepared for my exams

When I prepared replies to my parents for being late

When anger and hunger troubled me

When music and snacks solaced me.

All these trivial matters weighs a lot to me

It isn't a journey anymore but a reminiscent

The places I crossed by has become a part of me

That I wish to continue but in vain

Never thought i would be this nostalgic!

People on the billboards, And in the high and wide cutouts, I want to be you.

Smiles made of shining plastic, Smiles made of a million printed colours. You talk a billion different words, Without talking. Yet, we listen to you. People on the billboards, And those on the sides of buildings, trains, trams, and busses,

The Hotel Room

The doorman helped with her bags as she walked towards the front desk and he dropped them there for the bellboys. She took the key and followed the direction boards to her room. She sat on the double bed in her large fur coat and those tacky boots while she waited for the bellboy to get her luggage. She was observing the room, a room which was bigger than her apartment back home, the large TV, a small lounge and the enormous bookshelf right opposite the graceful fireplace. Her head moved towards the bathroom when the bellboy arrived, she asked him to place the bags in the closet, tipped quite generously and shut the door right on his back. There is something about hotel rooms that is so intriguing, these walls know so much, so many different stories and a new one every night. An insecure woman dancing in front of the mirror naked, something she would never do at home and something she might never do again. A young couple in the prime stage of their relationship having some intimate time, an old couple totally in love and having a beautiful and a quiet night. A young man who pulls back the curtain as he doesn’t want anyone to see him cheating on his poor, innocent and loving wife. A couple who has just gotten a weekend away from their kids and a young man on a business trip who gets just a few hours to put his back down. But none of these was the reason why she was here, she was here to wait anxiously as time passed because she has to meet him tomorrow, if there was any luck, this room could be the witness of the birth of new love or it could be the poor witness and offer a shoulder to cry on to a broken heart. Whatever it may be and whoever it may be, these walls will always be there for everyone and anyone.
