“Only a nation built on strong basic principles of economics will stand the test of time. It is for every one of us to think about where this country is headed and see what we can do individually and collectively to help India come out of the red. We are a billionstrong nation of talented and diligent people. We don’t really need to leave our home ground in search of greater pastures. It breaks my heart when I see brilliant and educated youngsters queuing up in front of the foreign embassies for visas. I wish I could tell them there are plenty of things they can do right here in India. Together we have to build a better nation.
I am reminded of the words of Martin Luther King Jr., “Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree.” This is what I have tried to do.
I wish I had the strength to do more.”
K. C. G. Verghese
The Birth of an InstitutionPreamble
In the early days of 1965, Late Dr. K.C.G. Verghese took up teaching assignments in Automobile Engineering subjects. His well-acquainted subject knowledge and inquisitiveness to the know-hows of the Automotive industry worldwide drew in a large number of students. While coaching for British Automobile Examination then, Dr. K.C.G. Verghese realized that Indian students could easily clear them with minimum preparation. It was at this moment, students promised Dr. K.C.G. Verghese to bring over a hundred students from Sing pore and Malaysia if he were to set up an institution on his own. The idea dawned upon Dr. K.C.G. Verghese as he felt the time has come to start his own venture; and very soon, Hindustan Engineering Training Centre (HETC) was started in 1966 as an educational institution intended mainly for foreign students. This irresistible quest for knowledge eventually paved way for the commencement of other Institutions under the Hindustan Group of Institutions (HGI).

This quote throws light on the role of educational institutions and its stakeholders. I am proud to note that the entire fraternity of Hindustan Institute of Technology & Science ensures to groom the students’ community and bring out the best qualities of the students.
The academic year 2021-22 has been a successful year for HITS. NBA has accredited / re-accredited 10 engineering programmes and it’s a milestone in the annals of our institution. The various academic reforms and the sustained efforts of Team Hindustan, have resulted in HITS achieving national and global recognitions, and regions across the globe in this rigorous international evaluation platform. HITS participated in Times Higher Education Impact rankings 2022 and out of 1406 institutions from 94 countries HITS achieved an overall rank of 400-600 in Sustainable Development Goals.
I firmly believe that the prestige of a nation relies largely on the calibre of its educational and research institutions and the graduates it produces year after year. Hindustan, a pioneer in Aviation, is now a symbol of aspiration for the youth of many nations. The institution follows the vision of the Late Founder Chairman Dr. KCG Verghese, “To Make Everyman a Success and No Man a Failure.” It is with great pride to realise that the founder of the citadel of learning and the architect of the Hindustan Group of Institutions, Dr. KCG Verghese – a great philanthropist, an academician and a fine humanist, was posthumously awarded the Second Marwan Sabore Iso Award by His Holiness Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma Mathews III the Catholicos of the East & Malankara Metropolitan and the Supreme Head of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church in recognition for his service to the society throughout his lifetime.
An important milestone this year at HITS was the inauguration of Centre for Open and Digital Education (CODE) by Thiru. Dr. K. Ponmudi, Hon’ble Minister of Higher Education, Govt. of Tamil Nadu. CODE has been established idealizing the principle: for anyone, anywhere, at any age. The objective of CODE, through blended learning is expected to benefit students and working professionals at a large scale. My perception is that the pandemic has forced us to look at new light; and education is no exception and HITS has made huge strides reaching out to students who aspire to be educated.
Achievements of students and staff this academic year has proved again that HITS continues to reach greater heights in the field of education. To mention a few of the achievements, a Chemical Engineering student has obtained fully paid AICTE – MITACS Research Internship at University of Alberta, Edmonton. One of our Aerospace Engineering students received the runner up title in the prestigious Indian Space Science Olympiad. The Institute of Management and Accountants has awarded CMA Program Scholarship worth Rs. 3.5 Lakhs to an Automobile Engineering student for his outstanding performance.
This academic year witnessed the launch of new programmes, inauguration of newgen laboratories and facilities. The MoU’s with foreign universities such as Deakin University, Australia; Swinburne University, Australia; Western Sydney University, Australia paves the way for twinning programmes, student exchange for research and other developmental activities. Several important events were conducted throughout the year like Engineers’ Day University Day, Convocation and Success Day were held to celebrate the successful placements of our students.
The concerted and committed efforts of the entire Hindustan fraternity have enabled this institution to scale greater and newer heights and achieve laurels in all spheres of its activities. I personally welcome all the aspirants who would like to join HITS for their new academic pursuits. I congratulate the editorial team for compiling the HCELLENCE, the University Magazine 2022 in a meticulous manner.

Critical thinking, creativity, problem solving, teamwork, leadership, etc. are more important aspects than the current knowledge. You can play an important role in building a new world, a new and better India. I am confident that you can and that’s my wish for each one of you.
H.E. Dr. Grace Akello Ambassador of Uganda to India
I feel doubly honoured to be in Hindustan Institute of Science and Technology. First, this institute has conferred upon me the prestigious academic award of Honoris Causa. Secondly, I attach great value to this honorary award because it has been given to me at the most auspicious of all times of the year. This is the time of year when the world honours the mothers of its people. It has taken many years for the world to place equal value on the female part of humanity. Females, over thousands of years of the evolution of the human species, have been gentle, silent strength and inspiration that propelled humanity to achievement. When I looked at the number of Indian women as professors, heads of departments, engineers, and technicians, I said, "Hail the spirit of India because India has recognised that its humanity is made of women and men.” Thank you for making India grow and grow and grow. As for my Honoris Causa from this prestigious university, I dedicate this degree to all women everywhere on planet earth.
Mr. Priyadarshan Indian Filmmaker.
Happy to be at Hindustan for the Convocation occasion! After my school days, when my dad asked me what my next plan was, I said I would like to go to the Pune Film Institute. With a huge frown, he asked me, "What are you going to learn there?" What do they teach? I said, "Cinema." The frown became bigger and he asked me if it was a profession. My dreams of becoming a filmmaker were shattered. But I always knew where I belonged, and even though I graduated in Psychology and Philosophy, I moved forward to achieve my dream. I'm so proud of that. The journey was filled with many hurdles, but it became smooth later. This is what I would like to tell the graduates who graduate today. You can stand and understand the world around you because of your education. Always remember where you belong and take your path towards that. I am very sure none of you will ever fail, so I take this opportunity to thank the Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science for giving me this great opportunity and this honour.
Dr. G. A. Ramadass Director, National Institute of Ocean Technology, Government of India.
Despite the pandemic, I applaud HITS for a stellar academic year 2021–22. By starting with such a prominent institution, I am strongly invoking the exceptional example of the University's Founding Father, Late Dr. K.C.G Verghese. We must focus on the critical question of what to do with one's life throughout our careers? And, the basic response is that there is only one way to be successful in life—do what you enjoy. ‘You should flourish at what you do and put your heart and soul into it,’ says the modern adage; but, ‘You must also work on your character if you want to achieve your aim.’ Opportunities for today's youth are as open and wide as the ocean. Students can choose from a wide variety of options and move ahead in life. The only requirement is vibrancy among the youth community. HITS dedication to training students with long-term goals has always impressed me, and I wish each student the best of luck in their chosen career.
Dr. Peter Koenig
Professor & Head, Institute for Automotive Technology, Trier University of Applied Sciences, Germany.
I beseech everyone to take responsibility for your life, and be an example for others by showing values and constantly strive to find real values in life. There are three types of responsibilities that I would like each one of you to develop upon:
1. Reflect on what you hear and read; and not to accept the statement of others.
2. Need to speak up if something is wrong. Try to change the world a little around with your charm, character, potential, positivity, and good wealth.
3. Develop and guide others irrespective of nationality, gender, race, religion to be better—make this world a little bit better every day.
I have been associated with Hindustan for over 3 years and working on the DAAD Project with the Department of Automobile Engineering. I take this opportunity to welcome young learners to visit Germany as we share a good partnership with India and I would be honoured to offer my support in any possible way. Wishing all success to Hindustan!
Dr. Saravanan
President & Chief Technology Officer, Ashok Leyland Ltd.
I'm honoured to be at Hindustan Institute of Technology & Science. If you need to have one reason to commemorate this day, then let this be the day that divides the two stages in your life: one that is the power that you are and one that is the power that you can be. You are the future. Your life will be powered by hopes, dreams, and hard work, which comes along with immense possibilities and the choices that you make for life.
Keep your eyes on the future and build it. Don't live in the present. That is how you can mould the future. The future is not given to you, you create it.
It is not written somewhere that you will be able to achieve up to this level. Only your efforts can build and mould it better. This great institution has provided you with good education - a launch pad from which you can go out into the world and demonstrate to them the capabilities that have allowed you to be not subservient to history. Go out into the world and do something that makes you and the people around you to feel proud. Write your own story.

When I visited Hindustan for the first time, the most impressive thing was the very active researches in Automobile Engineering. We exchanged MoU, and the most impressive thing was the discussion time with many of those engine researchers. It was my first experience in Hindustan, and that was so exciting and interesting. We had a usual ceremony to exchange MoU with many of the executives, and I mentioned our possible hope to cooperate with us to improve our English-speaking abilities for not only students but also faculty members. I have visited Hindustan many times together with another Indian university of Chitkara in Chandigar. During my visits, I was sometimes accompanied by my wife and a girl student. They must have enjoyed their very exciting Indian culture and student life. I retired Gunma University and believe our friendship and mutual understanding must favour our fruitful future cooperation for a long time

Padma Bhushan, Dr. A. Sivathanu Pillai, Chief Controller R&D, DRDO, & Founder CEO & MD BrahMos Aerospace.
Having completed Bachelors in Electrical Engineering, what inspired you to take up Aerospace, which might have seemed a little different from your field of studies?
There was no Aerospace in those times. When I was studying in my 4th year of Electrical Engineering in Thyagarajarar College, there was an exhibition which attracted many visionaries—we made a multi-applicable/purpose switch project which automatically runs different appliances in different times. Dr. Sasiraman came for the exhibition and was
Indian Scientist & the father of BRAHMOS very amused to see that made for the first time. Gradually everyone became curious about the “new” project. Dr. Vikram Sarbhai also visited, and he talked to me for about 15 minutes about the design and how we made it. He then put his hand around my shoulder and said, “You have a very bright future.” This man came and I got triggered, he electrified me to think that I should go to ISRO. I applied in my final year. I completed my degree and joined ISRO in 1969, and the motivation was Vikram Sarabhai.
A renowned Nuclear Physicist, Rocket Scientist, the Father of BrahMos Aerospace, whose glorious career is blossomed with various prestigious awards like Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and many more. For a career so great, what were some of the untold challenges you faced during the course? Rocket Science was a not common branch then. After studying a regular engineering course, getting into a Rocket technology was really a challenge. I had the opportunity to work in the SLV-III, with 4 stages and 44 subsystems. I was given the job of progressing, as a Project Engineer on the 4 rocket motors. The real challenge was to make the design, development, testing, qualifying the rocket motors for meeting the requirements of SLV-III. So, that was the first challenge I faced. Next was to develop the industries itself at different places like Bombay, Nasik, etc. All these places were far off and we had to go there and do the work to make a case, followed by propellant casting and other parts at Trivandrum and Sriharikota, followed by standing test at Sriharikota. The whole process is a challenging task, especially to complete within the time and also successfully.
Being the Special Secretary from India for the India-Russia inter-governmental communications on Military Technical Cooperation, and through various other global experiences, what were some aspects that blew your mind, and made you improvise or adopt the ideas in our country too?
We are not first in technology. We always look at USA, Europe or other countries and try to follow. So, naturally, our country goes to fifth or sixth position, but not the first. So, the whole idea which was driving me was, ‘How do we become No.1?’. The possibility of becoming No.1 is how you lead in technology, through some collaborations with a very advanced country, where we can absorb the technology and jump. If we develop ourselves, it will take time. That’s what drove me when I was in the India-Russian cooperation. So, working with them, I went for the Brahmos program which made India the No.1 country. When we launched SLV-III, we were 7th in the world, and when we launched Agni missile, we were 6th in the world. But Brahmos has made us 1st in the world.
We learn that you were a close friend and colleague of the Missile Man of India, Late Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and have worked with many distinguished Scientists like Late. Dr. Vikram Sarabhai and Late. Dr. Sathish Dhawan. Could you share any interesting/amusing experiences while working with them? Dr. Vikram Sarabhai is a man of vision. His vision was to overcome problems of communication, lack of education, poverty, illiteracy, lack of electricity, etc. and update India using space technology. He was confident that space technology will make a revolutionary change; and we see that now. He introduced satellite, borrowed from NASA, and established communication in 2000-4000 villages where there was no electric power, but they were watching TV. This program was called SITE (Satellite Instructional Television Experiment). Similarly, he did another collaboration with other people, by bringing a front-row German Satellite to enable communication. So, he mainly focused on the people and the problems of the country and how to use space technology. Working with him, we get a vision, an idea. When we talk about Dr. Sathish Dhawan, he is a man of action. He outlined how ISRO should progress, and laid down a 15-year program, organizing ISRO very systematically. Today, ISRO is a successful organization, because of Sathish Dhawan. So, his mission focused on building an institution. Thirdly, Dr. Abdul Kalam, a task master and a hard worker. His main focus was to channelize all the resources and facilities available in a country to his vision. Suppose a vision is difficult to achieve, it can still be achieved if you bring all the forces together. SLV-III, Nuclear test, Agni, etc. happened due to his management of forces in a focused manner towards the goal. I observed all the 3 people and each one has got unique qualities. Now, I can say that I have got all the 3 qualities of the 3 people.
Four decades of experience in two of the most looked-up-to organizations for every Aerospace aspirants organizations: ISRO and DRDO. From your experience, what do you think are the best facilities that ISRO and DRDO offers any passionate student?
ISRO has started the Space Technology University for the 12th grade passed students, who are taken in through an interview. Every year, they take in about 150 students. They train them and give Masters degree in Space Technology and they absorb them. So, if anybody is interested in space, they can get into this program. There are consortium of industries, other than ISRO, that undertake space technology activities and thus creating more opportunities. DRDO has a university but they don’t recruit from this university. Anyone can join DRDO depending on his qualification. There are variety of opportunities in DRDO, not just in Aerospace but every field has got a work there. But as things go, students mostly look to get into ISRO and DRDO. Instead, they can get into the industries, from where they can work for ISRO.
As you step into, I believe, a new leaf in the book of your life, as the Professor – Emeritus (Research), to inspire our young minds, what message would you like to give to our students? World as I see it, is enterprising. Future is for entrepreneurs and start-ups. The development of the Aerospace technology is very interesting as space technology has reached a stage of colonization of moon! So, various countries will travel to moon, to extract materials like Helium-III, which is a great source for future energies. Secondly, having a launch pad for small launch vehicle on moon would be very interesting, considering its gravity 1/6th of earth, accessibility to other planets and to be able to acquire asteroids which contains enormous minerals like gold, platinum, etc. As we enter into Hypersonic travel, we focus in raising our potential, to even reach Mars in 3 days instead of 9 months! With all the resources and technologies available, the students have a big task to do, and the world is progressing. Only technology can make this happen. So, this opportunity must be utilized innovatively. Only this will take over the future.

Revitalization of Abandoned Quarry-Tourist Hub
Revitalization of Abandoned Quarry-Tourist Hub
Dark blue stagnant water in vast stone quarry pits, deep enough for a leap, is alluring for children and youth. But beneath the water lurk protruding stone surfaces, slush and crevices. When people with little or no-swimming skills plunge in, the danger is even more. The state has seen enough more of the hazard posed by abandoned stone quarries. There are vast amount of youth and young people reported dead in many abandoned stone quarries across Chennai. There were many activist and protesters been petitioned for the closing of the quarry, but there were no actions that are taken over the period of time. The main reasons to revitalize the quarry is its space which has a lot of potential towards improving tourism in Tamil Nadu. And, this project helps to revitalize the abandoned quarry and make it a tourist hub in Chennai.

Katha's Fashion is a collection inspired from Madhubani painting and its types because of the wonderful stories and its vibrant, beautiful colour. Birds of Feathers is a collection inspired by seeing the hard working lives of birds. It also propagates a social message of letting them live their lives in glorious colours in their natural habitat rather than confining them between bars and handles. It also throws light on how exotic and migratory birds are affected by settlement expansions like cell phone towers and wave signals.
Mahendra Sai, B.Sc Fashion Design.
Memories of Mom is a collection of bridalwear which features bold silhouettes, a unique colour palette and a touch of grunge designed for the new-age bride who is unapologetically herself. This collection was conceived taking inspiration from my fondest memories of my mother. Growing up, my mother often spent time with me at the beach where she taught me quite a lot of life lessons by sharing her own experiences. Since then I’ve come to celebrate and confess to the mother ocean as I identify with it as my “safe place”

I joined HITS as a French lecturer in August 2018. I was 25 years old, freshly graduated and in search for my first teaching experience. I can say that from the moment I stepped into campus I felt right at home. Working at HITS is a privilege, not all college campuses are as green, safe and peaceful as ours. HITS proposes a variety of extracurricular activities and functions that make the campus life super fun and enjoyable throughout the years. As a foreigner it always amazes me to celebrate festivals. Students and staff gather and celebrate each other’s religious beliefs and cultural differences.
Dr. Samuel Ayofemi Olalekan Adeyeye Associate Professor, Department of Food Technology, School of Liberal Arts and Applied Sciences.
My resumption as a faculty member in the Department of Food Technology at HITS on 13 July 2021 was historic because it was my first time to India and my first teaching experience in an Indian University. I was warmly received and welcomed by the Chancellor, Pro Chancellor, Director, Vice Chancellor, Pro Vice Chancellor and the staff and students. Hindustan has become my second home and I have received unprecedented support and love from both Academic and non-academic staff of the university. The university has made my stay enjoyable and gratifying. The University provides me all my basic needs and needed assistance. I am very grateful for this.

In the rapidly changing business environment today, it has become perilous for organizations to continuously change and evolve for success. The industry expectations have gone higher and only those who have the right attitude & skills to accept challenges endure and upsurge the performance ladder each day.

TESTIMONIALS
“The value of college education is not the learning of many facts but the training of the mind to think” -Albert Einstein Hindustan has been a place where I have done repetitive learning and unlearning. There were around 100+ companies coming to our college in different domains. I got offers in Mphasis and Cognizant; and I chose Cognizant. The training provided by the college was very helpful to brush up the concepts learnt throughout 4 years of engineering. I am really happy to be a part of Hindustan!”

How do you reflect on your association with the then Hindustan College of Engineering (HCE) and now, Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science (HITS)?
It is awesome to see the growth of my alma mater. The Management has built a solid foundation under the leadership of late Dr. KCG Verghese through exemplary planning and foresightedness right from moving the premises from St. Thomas Mount to Padur and introducing several programmes. Could you highlight some of the notable corporate projects you were involved with?
I worked in the semiconductor industry for the past 20+ years with the global giant AMD and had the opportunity of handling products using technologies ranging from 130nm to 7nm. I have, i) Led Teams on the successful Launch of Athlon and Ryzen series microprocessors & Radeon series graphics processors. ii) Instituted T-TEC, a Technical Training Excellence Centre, nurturing the spirit of knowledge sharing and continuous learning. iii) Spearheaded the Master Data Management, which not only benefits specific products but impacts all the products manufactured and shipped from the company.
What are your success habits?
I believe in transformational leadership and in applying its principles. I develop and communicate a strategic vision to my team, as Sa vision is a positive image or model of the future that energizes and unifies employees; then I model the vision, encourage the team to experiment, and build their commitment to the vision by involving them in the process of shaping the organization’s vision.
What is your message to the youngsters brimming with life and energy as they will be entering into the corporate world soon?
Youth is the phase in every person’s life that is filled with enthusiasm, energy and opportunities. Use it to the fullest to explore and soar high by observing, learning and growing and holding on to a positive attitude. Above all build your EQ (Emotional Quotient) & AQ (Adversity Quotient) as well besides IQ, for they are the key prerequisites for growing in your career and start leading teams.
Would you elaborate on the Community Support Services Initiative that you have recently launched?
Rendering services to the community is not an option but a responsibility of every human. The experiences as a member of the KCC Community Center Singapore, OLPS Church L&C Committee, and AMD CSC Committee led me to institute a community services program in HEAAC with 2 targets - to serve the underprivileged, and to instill the spirit of service in our alumni members. We successfully launched this program on 29 May 2022 with ‘Willing Hearts’ a charity organization that provides food for 11,000 people daily to over 70 locations island-wide. HEAAC plans to share its time in various organizations on a quarterly/ monthly basis and grow this initiative to benefit the needy.
The 2-day celebration saw a huge contingent of cultural troupes of about 4500+ registrations with 720 teams for 49 events. The veteran experts and senior level professors adjudged the events. DJ Night Featuring DJ Sam (Indian Music), and DJ Priyanka (International Music) on 5 April 2022 elevated the evening’s energy. The live Music Concert of the Non-Violinist Project comprising of Super Singer famed Anand Aravindakshan, Rakshita Suresh, Diwakar, Srinisha Jayaseelan on the evening of 6 April 2022 filled the music on air with vibrant notes letting the crowd gently groove.
