Honouring Academic Excellence
Lifetime Achievement Award for our Founder Chancellor from the Rotary Club of Chennai Madam Founder Chancellor, Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Verghese, received the Lifetime Achievement Award for being a visionary leader whose contributions have left an indelible mark on the professional landscape. The Founder Chancellor holds 35 years of experience in various capacities in the Highways Department, Government of Tamil Nadu. In addition to this, she is the pioneer among women Chancellors in private-sector education in India.
Dr. Ashok George Verghese, Pro-Chancellor, was bestowed with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the District Rotaract Council 2023-24, Rotary International District 3232. He received the award during the Rotaract Conference "Changing Gears" held at Ethiraj College, Chennai, on 25 February 2024 for his unparalleled contribution towards the Rotaract Movement.

Dr. Ashok George Verghese, Vice President - HGI and Pro Chancellor - HITS received his Doctoral Degree in Business Management from Swiss School of Business and Management (SSBM Geneva). He successfully defended his thesis titled: "Transcending Boundaries and Redefining Learning Experiences in Higher Education using the Triad of Innovation, Digital Learning and Inclusivity" on 11 March 2024. This accomplishment of the Pro Chancellor is an inspiration to the Hindustan fraternity. HITS wishes him all success in his upcoming endeavours.

A total of 8 students from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering were awarded the Global Scholarship by the ISACA Foundation, USA (Information Systems Audit and Control Association). As an academic partner of the Foundation, HITS is the first Institution in India to receive the One in Tech Global Scholarship worth $4,000. The beneficiaries will explore more opportunities to apply for internship employment at NTT Data Services. The funds may be used for full-time enrolment, part-time enrolment, credit courses, purchase of books, and any school supplies and technologies.

A four-member delegation, led by Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese, Chancellor of Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science (HITS), actively participated in the QS Higher Education Summit (QSHES)Asia Pacific 2023 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, hosted by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) from 7-9 November. HITS established partnerships with institutions such as Swinburne University of Technology, INTI International University, and Diliman College. Memoranda of understanding were signed, and a Letter of Intent with Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) was endorsed. HITS achieved notable rankings in the QS World University Rankings: Asia 2024, reinforcing its standing in government and private institutions across the region.
HITS participated in the 75 NAFSA Annual Conference in Washington, DC, USA, connecting with international education leaders and professionals. The programme aimed to strengthen academic ties and promote an inclusive future. Representatives from HITS, including Dr. N. Manoharan and Dr. M. Jaikumar, engaged in discussions with various international partners and experts:
• Dr. Akhlesh Lakhtakia, a Jefferson Science Fellow at the U.S. Department of State, explored new collaborations in higher education between the U.S. and India.
• Ms. Yumi Takahashi from Western Michigan University discussed potential future collaborations between HITS and WMU.
• Mr. Francisco Donoso Garcia from TUAS, Spain, was greeted by HITS representatives during a visit to the Trier University of Applied Sciences, Germany.
• Dr. Yng Zeng, Director of Asian Initiatives, Light Centre for Chinese Studies, and Soga Japan Centre discussed signing an MoU scheduled for June 1, 2023.
• Mr. Mubeen Saleem, Director of Strategy at UNIVISER, explored collaboration opportunities for a peer-to-peer advisory platform, with a meeting scheduled for June 1, 2023.
The final year students of Biotechnology – Ms. Renuka R and Ms. Sanskrithi M V, are pursuing a Semester Exchange Programme at Dongguk University, Seoul, South Korea. With its inception dating back to 1906, Dongguk University stands as one of the premier private institutions in the region, holding a notable position at #671-680 in the QS World University Rankings 2024. The course duration of the programme is between 13 August 2023 - 15 March 2024.
The staff and students from the Department of Automobile Engineering visited the Trier University of Applied Sciences under the DAAD German Academic Exchange 2023. The visit aimed to promote Research Exchange Programme and a Study Tour.

The “Bay Range Hangar” is an additional facility added to the Department of Aeronautical Engineering and serves to provide the aircraft maintenance and training with a versatile fleet of aircraft and helicopter. The newly inducted Piper Seneca Twin-Engine Aircraft is parked here.
The Centre of Excellence aims to offer an elevated level of practical exposure in the realms of troubleshooting and debugging, software development testing, and reverse engineering.
The initiative receives a backing from the Wockhardt Foundation, a non-governmental organization from the state of Maharashtra, India and is spearheaded by PHPL (Perfect House Private Ltd.), from Maharashtra, a renowned manufacturer specializing in electrical generators. The on-grid solar power generation system is mostly identified as a photoelectric system generating electric power which will reduce the electricity bill expenses and have an alternative form of power generation, a clean and renewable energy source.
The Laboratory was inaugurated on 19 February 2024 by Dr. Y. Srineevas Rao Distinguished Scientist and Director General (Naval Systems and Materials) with an objective to execute hail ice studies based on project - “Experimental and numerical investigations on the failures of metallic and composite structures to simulated hail ice impact” sanctioned by ARDB Structures panel. Along with the 100KW which is in use since 2014, this 450KW of solar power has enabled the University to save up to Rs. 7.5lakhs of power consumption.

The 14 Convocation was held on 16 September 2023 at the Bay Range Campus. A total of 1457 students received their degrees. The Ceremony honoured 62 rank holders with medals and cash prizes for their meritorious performance. The Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) was conferred on Mr. Sudhanshu Mani, Retd. General Manager, Integral Coach Factory (ICF). Mr. Pablo Gándara, Team Leader, International Urban Regional Cooperation (IURC) Project of Europe and Asia / Australasia received the Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa). The Chief Guest for the event was (Dr.) Vijay Kumar Singh (Retd) Hon'ble Union Minister of State Civil Aviation and Road Transport & Highways and the Guest of Honour was Dr. Peter Koenig Professor and Head, Automotive Technology Trier University, Germany.
Addressing the graduands, the Chief Guest encouraged them to harness their innovative potential, experiment, and capitalize on India's data-rich environment. He also stressed the importance of hard work and continuous learning, urging the graduates to remain open-minded and receptive to new experiences, knowledge, and even their own mistakes.
In his acceptance speech, Mr. Pablo Gandara recorded his gratitude towards HITS for the conferment of the Honoris Causa. He then pointed out to the significance of research and its role as a crucial raw material for the progress of societies where an institution like HITS plays a vital role in nurturing and chiseling talents and future leaders. Mr. Sudhanshu Mani, (Retd.) General Manager of the Integral Coach Factory thanked HITS for conferring on him the Honoris Causa. He congratulated the graduands and encouraged them to give their best efforts, pour in their passion, commitment, and hard work into their endeavours so that even in the face of failure, each setback serves as a stepping stone towards eventual success.
This annual symposium of SPADE was conducted on 27 October 2023 and was based on the theme XEVIRO: Synthesizing Sustainability and Digital Futures. As the contemporary digital era encompasses both indoor and outdoor spaces, the Symposium addressed the interconnectedness between sustainability and technology. More than 350 architect enthusiasts deliberated on the theme through expert talks and hands-on training workshops delivered by renowned architects.
This mega event witnessed the presence of some renowned architectural experts across the globe such as Ar. Sushant Verma (co-founder rat[LAB]), Dr. Andre Brown, Associate Dean International, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand; Ar. Hena Damodharan, Senior Associate Director, CBRE Chennai and SPADE Alumni.

The Hindustan Group of Institutions commemorated the 18... Founder’s Memorial Day on 14 February 2024 at the Bay Range Campus. The event was presided over by Hon’ble Chancellor Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese. The event was graced by Madam Founder Chancellor Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Verghese; Mr. Ashok Verghese, Pro Chancellor; Dr. S. N. Sridhara, Vice Chancellor; Dr. R. W. Jesudasan, Pro Vice Chancellor; Dr. Muthukumar Subramanian, Registrar, Heads of the Institutions, academic and admin heads, staff, and students of HGI.
The HITSMUN 2023 was organised by the Department of Languages on 8-10 September 2023. The Conference garnered a total of 290 student delegates who represented schools and colleges across the country. It hosted 6 distinct committees that offered unique perspectives on global issues. From UN Women and UNSC to UNGA DISEC, CFR, ECOSOC, and IP, the student delegates had a diverse range of options to explore. HITS Model United Nations was a platform that brought together talented MUNers who debated and discussed assigned issues. The winners were awarded prizes worth Rs. 1.5 lakhs.
The Chief Guest for the day was Dr. P. Wilson, Principal and Secretary, Madras Christian College. As part of the Memorial Day commemoration, the NSS and Unnat Bharat Abhiyan cell of HITS, through the Dr. K. C. G. Verghese Charitable Foundation donated 10 tricycles to the beneficiaries of the Uthavum Karam –Trust for the Physically Challenged. In addition to this, ten sewing machines were donated to the women’s self-help groups of Padur, Kelambakkam, Kayar, Pudupakkam and Thandalam – the villages adopted by HITS. In addition to this a Blood Donation Camp was also held on the same day.

The contingent comprised of Mr. Nadesan, Maheswaran N, Senior Manager, Tech Solutions; Mr. Pariath, Venkata Babu S, Senior Manager, Tech Data Engineering; Ms. Kaur, Harmeet, Senior Manager, Manufacturing Engineering; Mr. Srinivasan, Ramanathan, Senior Manager, Tech Data Engineering; Mr. Ekambaram, Senior Engineer; Mr. Srinivasan KB, Payloads & Structures Engineer, BGS Engineering; Ms. Geetha Priya, University Recruiting Lead Global Talent Acquisition; Mr. Balakumar Sankar R, Engineering Manager Support Data Engineering; Mr. Rajan D, Engineering Manager Support Data Engineering. The programme included tech talks delivered by the experts from Boeing on topics that focussed on the various avenues and technologies of Boeing India Engineering. The students had an opportunity to interact with the delegates who answered all their queries feverishly. The event also hosted a Panel Discussion on “Future Technologies in Knowledge Management for Aerospace Industry.” The discussion dwelled on key areas like AI/ML in the aerospace industry and university, regulatory management, digital twining concept in aircraft maintenance and design and the role of educational institutions on innovations in the aircraft industry. In addition to this, the company has recruited a total of forty-two students this year with an annual salary package of Rs. 10.50 lakhs. Also, eight students of the 2025 graduating batch are undergoing internships with Boeing.

The Fresher’s Day is a momentous occasion for every freshman to seize the opportunities that lie before them, dare to dream big, and never underestimate the power of their own potential. This year the fresher’s day was celebrated under three banners that provided the platform for the first years of various Schools to exhibit their talents in music, dance, singing, and compering.
Fiesta ’23 – a day for the freshmen of the School of Engineering and Technology was celebrated on 14 October 2023. The Chief Guest was Dr. Thirumagan, Principal, Hindustan College of Arts and Science.
Vibrance ’23 – the fresher’s day for the students of the School of Liberal Arts and Applied Sciences and the School of Allied Health Sciences was held on 28 October 2023. Mr. Anant Melathur, Regional Director, Boeing India and also an Alumnus of HITS presided over the programme as Chief Guest.
Emergence ’23 – the freshmen of the Schools of Law and Management participated in the event held on 4 November 2023. The Chief Guest was Dr. Ravi Margasahayam, Space Great Will Ambassador, NASA.
The volunteers of the National Service Scheme (NSS) and Cadets of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) participated in the Cancer Awareness Programme organised by the Gleneagles Global Health City, Chennai on 4 February 2024. A total of 200 students participated in the Walkathon. The objective of the programme was to create awareness and educate the masses on hope of fighting the life-threatening menace of cancer. This initiative by the students was widely appreciated by the HITS fraternity.
The NSS Cell of HITS in association with the Rotary Club of Chennai Capital organized a Blood Donation Camp on 14 February 2024 at the Bay Range Campus as a commemoration of the 18th Founder's Memorial Day. The Camp was inaugurated by Rtn. Prasanth Gireesh, Community Service Director, RCCC along with Dr. S. N. Sridhara, Vice Chancellor. A total of 787 units of blood were collected from 1237 registered blood donors. The collected units were donated to various Government Blood Banks in Chennai.
The Institution contributed generously by aiding those affected by the flood due to Cyclone Michaung. In collaboration with KCG Fashion Bank, the NSS and NCC Cells of HITS distributed pre-used clothes to the flood-affected areas around Pallikaranai on 8 December 2023. On 9 December 2023 the NSS Cell, along with Y's Men's Club of Chennai OMR and Y's Men's Club of Hindustan Youth, provided essential relief materials, including food supplies and clothing. This collective effort aimed to bring comfort to the resilient community of Pallikaranai, showcasing the power of kindness and solidarity during challenging times.
The Camp was held for seven days between 12 – 18 August 2023 at Sembaakkam Village, situated near Thirupporur. The student volunteers orchestrated various range of activities, solidifying its commitment to excellence in education and social welfare. The Camp conducted competitions for school and college students in the village. The volunteers participated in the beach cleaning drive at Mahabalipuram. The highlight of the camp was the dental check-up by Ragas Dental College and Hospital and eye check-up by Shankara Nethralaya. The volunteers organised a road safety drive in association with Thiruporur Traffic Police. These initiatives stand as a testament to the dedication of HITS to academic excellence and its enduring commitment to social well-being and sustainable development. The University’s proactive role within the community serves as a compelling model of how educational institutions can serve as catalysts for positive change.
The initiative distributed back to school kits to the students of the Panchayat Union Primary School, Padur. The students who lost their books and all school items during the Michaung Cyclone received the kits. The programme was organised by the NSS Cell and sponsored by SSS KAR Sevai Trust. It was graced by the presence of KAS Thara Sudhakar, President, Padur Panchayat; Dr. Pon. Ramalingam, Director, IQAC; Dr. K. S. Shaji, Dean, Office of Student Affairs; NSS volunteers, and the staff and students of the School.
The University was honoured for mobilizing the highest number of blood donors during the tenure 2020 – 2022 among engineering colleges. The award was presented at the 45 Annual Award Function organised by Madras Volunteer Blood Bureau and the Association of Voluntary Blood Donors (Tamil Nadu) on 12 October 2023. It was received from Dr. G. Bhaskararan, a Civil Surgeon (Rtd) and the Founder of B.D.C., M.M.C - Madurai, alongside Dr. Fr. Ferry S.J, the Founder of the Dhanam Movement. This achievement is a testament for the Institution’s unwavering commitment to promoting voluntary blood donation and its consistent efforts in the noble cause.

RYLA, the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards was hosted by the Rotaract Clubs of Hindustan University along with Hindustan College of Arts and Science, KCG College of Technology, Chennai Capital, and HIET. The event was held at HITS Campus on 2 - 4 February 2024. The event was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Chennai Capital. The event was graced by some notable Rotarians such as: Rtn. Mahaveer Bothara, District Governor Elect of RI District 3233; Rtn. Satya Rao (President RCCC); Rtn. Alan Bartley Youth Service Director (RCCC); Rtn. Suresh Andrews (Rotaract Chairman of RCCC), and Rtn. Pranav Linali (Secretary RCCC); Rtr. PP. Essaki Sekar (DRR), Rtr. PP. Sasi Kumar (DRRE). It was attended by more than 100 Rotarians. The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards intensive leadership experience to improve leadership qualities and skills through fun and team activities along with amazing sessions by expert speakers. Team and fun activities like Management Games and Fire Camp were conducted to develop strong team bonds, learn leadership skills and establish fellowship. The three-days camp was an eye-opener for the young budding leaders.
The Inter-Departmental Cultural Fest, Yarona ’24 was held on 23 March 2024 at the Bay Range Campus. It hosted a total of forty-five events conducted at ten venues and online. Students represented their respective departments and contested with fervour and enthusiasm. The overall trophy was won by the Department of Science and Humanities and the Runner-up was clinched by the School of Liberal Arts and Applied Sciences.
Later in the evening, the audience witnessed and were enthralled by the Staccato Music Band. Then, the venue pulsated with energy and came together for the electrifying DJ Show. The infectious energy of DJ Madhan was mirrored by the audience as they danced to their heart’s fulfilment.
Hindustan Group of Institutions celebrated Christmas 2023 on 19 December 2023 at the Bay Range Campus. The celebration was presided over by Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese, Chancellor, HITS and Chairman, Hindustan Group of Institutions. Rt. Rev. Dr. Gregorios Mar Stephanos Episcopa, Bishop of Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church and Mr. Chang-nyun Kim, Consul General of the Republic of Korea were the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour respectively. The representatives from the KEB Hana Bank, India – Mr. Dae Ki Hong, Managing Director and Mr. Jaeyeol Lee, Chief Operating Officer, were the special guests.

The Fest was held on 20 January 2024 at the Bay Range Campus and was graced by a total of 200 alumni members. The event hosted Sport-X which conducted games like Box Cricket, Volleyball, and Table Tennis for the alumni. The Alumni members, through various sponsorship, contributed to the welfare of their alma mater. In addition to this, the Alumni Excellence Award was presented to the impeccable contribution of the alumni to the society.

Mr. Utkarsh Singhania, Director, The Standard Chemical Company addressed a forum of two hundred-second year students from the Departments of Computer Science and Electrical and Electronics Engineering. His speech focussed on developing startup ideas and the ways to prepare and face challenges during the process of becoming an entrepreneur.
Mr. Sharva Rasanayakam,, US State Department of Foreign Service, Vice Chairman, American Embassy Employee Association, Dhaka and Distinguished alumnus of HGI (HIET – ’82) spoke on the topic " Economic Development of South Asia: Challenges & Opportunities ". It was a great learning session for the students and faculty on 19 March 2024. This International Guest Lecture was organised by the School of Management and HITS Alumni Association in collaboration with the Office of International Affairs.
Ms. Afshan Fathima from the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (Batch 2021) received the Sports Excellence Award from the Rotary Club Chennai Capital for her outstanding performance as an Indian Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter who has won laurels for the country.
Mr. Greesh Pranav J. B. of Machatronics (Batch 2021) has been selected in the Indian Army as Lieutenant. During his stint as a student, he was a Cadet Warrant Officer in the NCC Wing.
Mr. M. S. Mohammed Salihil Salman, a former Post Graduate Student of Automobile Engineering (Batch 2022) and a National Basketball Player has been posted as the Sub-Inspector of Police at the Thalambur Police Station, Chengalpattu District, Tamil Nadu.
The Meet was held between 2-23 March 2024. The staff and students participated with true sportsmanship spirit and showcased their sporting talents. They represented their respective departments both in track and field events. The valedictory function was on 27 March 2024 in the presence of Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese, Chancellor and other University officials. The Chief Guest for the event was Mr. M. Ukkara Pandian, Former Indian Volleyball Team Captain and Senior Manager –Indian Overseas Bank. The overall championship trophy was clinched by the Department of Computer Science Engineering and the Runners-up Trophy was won by the School of Management.
Ms. M. Shanmugapriya, a Commerce Student of Batch 2017 and a National Level Volleyball Player has been posted as the Sub-Inspector of Police in Kadavasal Police Station, Thiruvarur District, TN.
The Women’s Team of HITS participated in the tournament held between 25-28 December 2023 at Jain Global Campus, Bangalore. They won the Bronze Medal and thereby qualified for the Khelo India University Games
The Women’s Basketball team won the Bronze Medal at the Tournament held between 18-21 February 2024. The contested against 16 basketball teams form across the nation.
The 33 Dr. KCG Verghese Memorial Inter-Institutional Basketball Tournament for Men and Women was held between 9-11 March 2024 at the Bay Range Campus. The Inter-Institutional Basketball Tournament is instituted in the memory of the Founder Chairman Dr. KCG Verghese,. A total of 18 Top University teams from Chennai, comprising of the 12 Men’s teams and 6 Women’s, teams battled out on the court, vying for the coveted championship trophy.
The Men’s Cricket Team won the Runner-up position at the Tournament conducted under the aegis of Association of Indian Universities between 7-16 January 2024. The tournament was inaugurated at Hindustan Institute and Technology by Mr. David Johnson, Former Indian Cricketer, in the presence of the University Officials of HITS. A total of sixty-three Universities participated and the matches were held at five different grounds of HITS. The final match was held between Anna University and Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science on 16 January 2024. The team representing Anna University clenched the Championship trophy.

Silver Medal at the All India Inter University Kickboxing Championship
Ms. S. Subashini, B. Sc. Physical Education won the Silver Medal at the All India Inter University Kickboxing Championship 2023- 2024 under the 55kg in the Kick Light The Championship was organised by Swamy Vivekanand Subharthi University, Meerut UP on 5 to 9 March 2024.
Mr. Mohammed Saam Anwar, B. Tech (EEE) South India Sub Junior, Junior & Senior Power Lifting Championship organised by Andhra Pradesh Power Lifting Championship Got Gold Medal in 120 Kg Senior (Squat - 300 Kg, Bench Press 145 Kg, Dead Lift 280 Kg- Total 735 Kg) on 19 to 21 January 2024.
Mr. P Thiruselvam B. Sc. Physical Education participated in the South West Zone Inter-University Boxing Men Championship 2023-24 organised by Chandigarh University, Punjab between 24-27 December 2023 and qualified for the All-India Inter-University Boxing Men Championship 2023-24.

Mr. Prakadeswaran S of I Year B. Sc. Physical Education was part of the Tamil Nadu Football team at the Khelo India Youth Games.
The World Technology University Network’s (WTUN) Hackathon for Climate Action was conducted from 28-30 November 2023. During this intense 48-hour challenge, international teams from 15 countries were formed, each comprising 4 to 7 participants. Students from HITS played integral roles and attained global fame in all THREE winning categories at this year's WTUN Hackathon for Climate Action. The winners won a cash prize worth Rs. 1 lakh.

The first-year student of B. A. Psychology won the first prize in the Open Mic Contest at Sahitya 2024 held at SRM Institute of Technology and Science. She contested with 200 participants and staged a Stand-up comedy act on "Struggles of Being a Psychology Student."
Senior Under Officer (SUO) G Sai Rohan was selected for the RDC (PM Rally). He was the Parade Commander of the Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Andaman and Nicobar (TN, P & AN). His journey began with his participation in Pre-IGC RDC selection where he competed against the best in the business. During the Inter-Group Competition (IGC), SUO Rohan emerged as the most prominent commander. The IGC camp witnessed the participation of 600 cadets from various directorates. Impressing with his leadership skills, SUO Rohan earned his place in the subsequent training camp.
