TOTAL FILTRATION INTRODUCES

TOTALFLO FB DUST COLLECTOR

Total Filtration is a Division of The Westbury Group of Filtration Companies and is your one stop shop for the manufacture and supply of liquid and dust filters and associated housings.

Total Filtration’s new TOTALFLO FB baghouse industrial dust collector is a Tubular bag dust collector which comes equipped with a reverse jet cleaning system. This system utilizes needlefelt filter bags to capture abrasive and heavy dust.

The client who is a packaging manufacturer approached us as they were looking to increase their production output with the installation of an additional production line, however their incumbent cartridge dust collector was already at capacity and just about handling the current processes. To introduce an additional production

line would overwhelm the system, resulting in stoppages which would have a knock-on effect on production output at the briqueter.

We sent our technical expert to visit their site to see their current processes in action and understand their production output volumes and future production requirements. A larger cartridge system would not have fit in the available space and height restrictions, so it was agreed that a replacement multi-sock dust collector would be the best solution to handle the additional workload giving them the required throughput. This type of system also has the advantage of the tubular bag dust collector being equipped with a reverse jet cleaning system. This system utilises needlefelt filter socks and internal cages to filter dust and particulate. Fabric filters have the advantage of handling large quantities of dust as well as hot and fibrous dusts where cartridges may not suitable.

There were also a number of additional factors to be taken into consideration. Firstly, the space that would be required to fit the new dust collector in was very restricted and the main body could not be visible over the roof line, all ductwork layouts had to comply with the latest regulations.

With our expertise we designed a bespoke system to fit in the tight space available whilst remaining compliant to the regulations, but still tall enough to allow dust product to spill down the hopper into the offload whilst being large enough to handle the processes.

The logistics of removing the old system and installing the new one had to be considered, due to the location and site layout both systems would need to be lifted by crane over the factory. The ductwork also had little room for manoeuvre, so this was designed to fit around the existing equipment and ensure we had the required lengths of heavy-duty ducting for the back draft damper.

Once the unit was in place the duct was connected to the existing ductwork in the workplace and commissioned prior to going into full production.

Institute of Materials Finishing

Greetings from seat 19D on Emirates flight 040 to Dubai and on to Singapore. Yes, once again I’m off on my travels! This was planned in late 2023 and seemed a long way off but it’s come round so quickly! Yet again it leaves me wondering where time goes. At least on this trip I have the enjoyment of 4 days at the Singapore Airshow, and catching up with old friends I haven’t seen since before Covid. I stop off in Dubai on the way home to run some training so not back in the UK until mid-March.

At least on this trip I have the enjoyment of 4 days at the Singapore Airshow, and catching up with old friends I haven ’t seen since before Covid. I stop off in Dubai on the way home to run some training so not back in the UK until mid -March.

The first 6 weeks of 2024 have seen some amazing business involvement and I hope Indestructible are not the exception to the rule by being so busy. Surely all of us involved in material finishing must be seeing an upturn in business as I’m sure all the world is becoming dynamically active.

results of their investigation into the re-authorisation analysis on Chromium Trioxide. It will be remembered that two requests for reauthorisation of CrO3 had been submitted, both to the UK HSE for UK REACH, but also ECHA for EU REACH. Whilst ECHA seem to enjoy prevarication, the HSE have got down to business, with the outcome that they are recommending a 12-year re-authorisation for use in slurry coatings, for both flight and industrial applications. This now has to be signed off by the Secretary of state, but this is expected to be a formality, and will mean that chrome-based slurry coatings can continue to be manufactured in the UK and applied both in the UK and throughout the world (except Europe!!) until 2036.

I have to say I’m pleased to hear the good news from the UK HSE on the

As yet it’s unclear what will happen in the EU with EU REACH. I understand ECHA have consultation out onto whether Chromium Trioxide should be moved from Annex XIV (continued authorisation) to Annex XVII (restriction), but I also understand that their workload is so high it is unlikely that any investigation will be possible before the sunset date of September 2024. At least BREXIT has had even a slight benefit!

E&TC are continuing activity to ensure the IMF is correctly recognised by OFQUAL as a provider of education; this will help to widen the appeal and benefits of these excellent courses within the Materials Finishing industries.

We have a new sub-group with Membership and Marketing, initially described as the business development group, with a role to actively sell sustaining membership of the Institute. Being handled by Barry Gay, Ken Griffiths and myself we are looking to actively engage with potential material finishing companies to extoll the benefits of Institute membership. Within the very short time we have been looking at this, I think we have engaged with four new member companies.

My ever-demanding role within indestructible has meant I have been lax in my involvement with the Institute, but I do keep up to date with activities within the committees and groups. I am happy to hear that

I hope the weather continues to be as placid as it has been for the start of 2024, and we can get into Spring without any major issues.

IFO HOSTS QUALICOAT MEETING

The first meeting of 2024 of the licensed members of the UK & Ireland Association is to take place at the headquarters of IFO in Germany in early April. IFO offer independent third party inspection services for all licensed members in the UK and Ireland. To understand the importance of third party accreditation we need to look at what is provided by ‘national standards’.

British Standards are known and often used across the globe to recognise a ‘standard’ for manufacture or service. By specification of a standard you are asking for a product or service that will fulfil its duty in use in any industry. However, as a specifier you rely on the credibility of the supplier to ensure they maintain the standard by checking and testing processes. The same can be said for many other global standards.

If a supplier fails to meet the level of specification within a given standard, often products can be replaced, but what happens when this cannot be achieved? Usually lengthy legal challenges take place. Citing architectural powder coating as an example, it is not always possible

simply to remove product and replace. Often the final position for such installations is somewhat of a compromise. As we all know, it is better to get it right to start with, which is the holy grail for any specifier.

Turning to third party accreditation, a process that protects both the specifier and the client, should this be something that we should be insisting on?

Simply put, third party accreditation invites an independent person or company the responsibility to undertake process and product checking to ensure the product or service meets the quoted standard. The result gives the client confidence that the product will fulfil their specified needs whilst the supplier is also qualified as a supplier of a quality product.

The Association QUALICOAT has placed third party accreditation at the heart of their architectural powder coating specification. A global specification, in the UK & Ireland the standard is managed by ‘QUALICOAT UK & Ireland’ with the Association based in the West Midlands.

So what is the QUALICOAT specification and how does it differ from the BS EN 12206 standard for powder coating? First of all it is fair to say that the much smaller standard is largely covered by

the much larger and more up to date QUALICOAT specification, which explains in more detail how to powder coat architectural profiles to a consistent specification. The difference is that the QUALICOAT standard is far more precise in giving details of process and process control offering a far better consistency in quality output.

Who writes this more detailed specification? surprisingly the very members themselves acting in working groups consisting of members across the globe. Why? In order to offer the best possible quality of architectural powder coating for a long sustainable life expectancy. All updates to the specifications are a result of detailed research by dedicated working groups.

All Members of QUALICOAT, which include powder coaters, pretreatment suppliers and powder manufacturers agree to allow IFO who are monitored for performance and nominated by QUALICOAT, to undertake unannounced inspections of members plant and processes. The intention of these inspections is to ensure that the most up to date Specification is being followed. Only once compliance can be demonstrated, the Member continues to be licensed to supply QUALICOAT approved products and coatings.

WORLD COATINGS COUNCIL

RE-ELECTS TOM BOWTELL FOR SECOND TERM AS PRESIDENT AND RECOGNISES OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS OF ANDY DOYLE

At the World Coatings Council’s annual meeting in March 2024, Tom Bowtell, Chief Executive of the British Coatings Federation, was re-elected as President for a second two-year term of office. The event was hosted by the China National Coatings Industry Association (CNCIA) in Shanghai, China.

The Council, which provides a forum for exchange and cooperation on major issues and priorities facing the industry, has established itself as a global voice with the United Nations, Governments and NGOs for over 30 years.

Tom Bowtell said of his re-election: “The World Coatings Council plays an important role to represent the global coatings industry to help create a successful and sustainable future for the sector. We will continue to lead on

the themes of sustainability and essentiality in our work in the coming years. I’m incredibly honoured to have the trust of my industry colleagues from across the world to serve a second term as President on behalf of the global coatings industry”.

The meeting also re-elected Monica Alcala-Saavedra of the Mexican Paint and Printing Ink Manufacturers’ Association as Vice President of the Council.

This year’s event was also the last for Andy Doyle, former President and founder of the World Coatings Council in 1992, who is retiring from the American Coatings Association later this year. Andy was recognised for his significant contributions to the global coatings industry with gifts and speeches from his World Coatings Council colleagues.

Commenting on Andy’s contribution, Tom Bowtell said: “Andy was the driving force behind setting up the World Coatings Council over thirty years ago, with founder members Japan, Europe and the USA. It is through his ability to bring people together, and to create an environment of trust and cooperation that has led to the World Coatings Council becoming such a vibrant, proactive and successful global organisation it is today, now with over 15 countries in membership.

The Council owes a huge debt to Andy Doyle, who can be hugely proud of what he has achieved”.

Andy Doyle, former President of the World Coatings Council and President and CEO of the American Coatings Association, commented: “In my time with the World Coatings Council, formerly IPPIC, I’ve made so many friends around the world who collaborated to tackle some major challenges on behalf of our wonderful industry. I’m so proud of how the Council has developed over the years, and while I will of course miss it, I feel confident that I’m leaving it in good hands. I’d like to thank all my colleagues for making my time in the paint industry so fulfilling and rewarding”.

The World Coatings Council is made up of members representing associations from the United States, China, European Union, Brazil, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Malaysia, Canada, South Africa, Turkey, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

THE VELLA GROUP BECOMES

FIRST UK BODYSHOP TO BE CERTIFIED TO AKZONOBEL’S NEW SUSTAINABLE REPAIR NETWORK

The Vella Group, one of the UK’s leading independent collision repair organisations, has become the first UK business to achieve Level 1 Certification and become an official partner within AkzoNobel’s Sustainable Repair Network, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.

AkzoNobel’s Vehicle Refinishes business launched the Sustainable Repair Network to support customers on their journey to becoming more sustainable and efficient. The three-level certification framework supports them by first measuring CO2e emissions, then undertaking ongoing monitoring to identify opportunities to reduce energy consumption and cost as well as CO2e emissions, before implementing improvements.

These improvements will include changes in equipment, processes, and choice of products, which in turn results in reduced waste, energy usage, and cost, and increased efficiencies.

Marc Holding, Managing Director of The Vella Group, says that the organisation is delighted to become a partner of AkzoNobel’s Sustainable Repair Network: “As a business we are forward thinking when it comes to sustainability and go beyond the standard or legal requirements placed upon us,” he explains.

“We are looking forward to working closely with AkzoNobel in continuing to develop our sustainability targets which will include identifying additional opportunities to further enhance our operational processes and procedures. This will lead to significant improvements in managing our carbon emissions and enhancing efficiency.”

The Vella Group has an established reputation for its commitment to

sustainability. In 2021 it became one of the first repair groups to become PAS2060 accredited, it has joined The Climate Pledge and has successfully reduced its CO2e emissions by 20%. Last year the group joined AkzoNobel’s Paint the Future project where various stakeholders across the supply chain collaborate to identify CO2e reduction possibilities. The Vella Group’s Trafford Park site is also currently the pilot site for the revised LV= Green Heart standard.

In collaboration with AkzoNobel, The Vella Group has reviewed the energy efficiency of the coatings it uses, and AkzoNobel’s CO2eRepairCalculator identified products with ambient and UV curing to reduce CO2e emissions. With the Carbon Pulse application an assessment was then undertaken to benchmark and monitor savings from the alternative coatings, with encouraging results. A full Bodyshop Energy Scan was conducted to map all energy

consumption on site and give advice where improvements can be made, regardless of whether it was coatings related, followed by the Sustainable Repair Audit. The audit focused on the four key areas of repair, recycle, re-use, and reduce to create a meaningful action plan for the organization to make further improvements across its operations.

Paul James, Strategic Accounts Manager

Vehicle Refinishes UK & Ireland, AkzoNobel, is looking forward to the partnership with Marc and his team: “Together we will collectively look at all the steps of their repair process and their entire bodyshop operation to see where emissions are being created and how we can help to reduce them. We will give them the tools, knowledge, support, and experience to make a tangible long-term difference to their business.”

LEADING GALVANIZING BUSINESS RECOGNISED IN THEIR COMMITMENT TO THE COMMUNITY

Thanks to their investment into restoring a formerly derelict building that sits within the heart of the Willenhall community, a leading galvanizing business has been recognised by The Victorian Society.

Wedge Group Galvanizing Ltd has been presented with the 2020 Conservation Award from The Victorian Society Birmingham & West Midlands. Campaigning for Victorian and Edwardian architecture, The Victorian Society awarded them with this accolade due to the refurbishment of the former Willenhall school, which was carefully and considerately transformed into Wedge Group Galvanizing’s headquarters back in 2018.

Chris Woolridge, Managing Director at Wedge Group Galvanizing, said: “Almost six years ago, we opened our brand-new headquarters, which was formerly Little London School which closed back in 2007. Our investment saw this historic site – which had been derelict for more than a decade – given a new lease of life and

the opportunity to, once again, be a revered landmark in the local community.

“It’s fantastic that this has been recognised by The Victorian Societyas not only was it important for our community in restoring a much-loved location and protecting its precious historical architecture, but our roots are firmly embedded in Willenhall. Records show that our founder, John Wedge, was galvanizing in the town as early as 1869, and our first galvanizing plant; B.E. Wedge Ltd was established on its present site in 1876 which is on the very street our new headquarters is located. It’s a real honour to stay where it all started, and to continue the legacy for years to come.”

The multi-million-pound development saw the building and its iconic clock tower completely renovated and restored to full working order.

Due to its rich history, all work was protected and completed under the considerate building scheme, which saw contractors working to minimise the impact, disruption, and disturbance on the local community.

Stephen Hartland, Chairman of The Victorian Society Birmingham and West Midlands, added: “Wedge Group Galvanizing was hand-picked by our committee to receive this award. They truly deserve this recognition due to the exemplary restorative works that they completed on Little London School (which originally opened in 1883), allowing its heritage to live on whilst new history can be made.

“We’re delighted to finally present Wedge Group Galvanizing with their accolade, which was unfortunately temporarily delayed due to Covid-19 restrictions.”

Following a tour of the refurbished headquarters, a bronze plaque and scroll were presented to Jeremy Woolridge, Executive Chairman of Wedge Group Galvanizing, and Chris Woolridge, by Professor Sir David Cannadine, Vice President of The Victorian Society.

Several members of The Victorian Society were also present, along with Mike Bates, Architect at Architettura, Devinder Matharu, Conservation Officer, and Adrian Andrews, Deputy Leader from Walsall Council.

Wedge Group Galvanizing Ltd is the largest hot-dip galvanizing organisation in the UK with a history dating back over 150 years. With 14 plants strategically placed across the country, the firm offers a truly national galvanizing service.

BEP SURFACE TECHNOLOGIES ACCELERATES DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION AND NET ZERO JOURNEY

Ground-breaking control and automation system enables real-time visibility and analytics

A two-year data-driven project boosts operational efficiency and cuts energy use by 20%

BEP Surface Technologies, a leading electroplating and surface finishing specialist, has accelerated its digital transformation and decarbonisation journey after investing in control and automation technologies.

The bespoke solution has transformed the Radcliffe-based manufacturer’s chrome plating process by enabling real-time visibility of critical operational parameters, enabling enhanced monitoring and data analysis.

The two-year project has cut energy use by 20 per cent, material use by 10 per cent, and labour use by 15 per cent.

The scalable solution is now being rolled out to copper and nickel-plating operations. It integrates with BEP’s grinding machinery to introduce predictive maintenance strategies and monitor hazardous materials to enhance safety.

The digitalisation programme has also facilitated a cultural shift within the 54-year-old company. Reducing manual operation and monitoring is empowering engineers to drive continuous improvement initiatives.

Andrew McClusky, Managing Director of BEP Surface Technologies, said: “The successful implementation of our control and automation system has revolutionised our chrome plating process, fast-tracked our digital transformation and accelerated our net zero journey.

“Like many heritage industries, electroplating and surface engineering has previously relied on operator skills and experience. Capturing that vital data from our processes enables groundbreaking control and automation, allowing our engineers to monitor and analyse comprehensive data sets and providing invaluable insights into process optimisation and energy efficiency.

“This project epitomises BEP’s commitment to innovation and excellence in manufacturing practices that have underpinned our work over the last half-century.”

The chrome plating project was launched in 2022 as part of BEP’s digital strategy. It was supported by Made Smarter, a government-backed programme helping SMEs adopt technology and skills, which funded a six-month digital internship to work with BEP.

Hassan Bin Mazhar, then an MSc student in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Salford, was tasked with addressing the challenge of excessive chrome deposition during the plating process.

The project’s first phase applied sensors to the plating tanks to enable real-time acquisition of operational data such as temperature, volts, amps, solution levels, solution composition, timings, and extraction efficiencies at each boiler. This was collated by a PLC and displayed in real-time via Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs) to engineers who can precisely monitor and control parameters. A SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) software system was then deployed to centralise those readings and analyse them to offer new insights and enable engineers to optimise the process.

Such was the project’s success; BEP took on Hassan as an Automation Engineer, spending the last 18 months developing and scaling the solution.

Hassan said: “This project has been a dream start to my career. I gained hands-on experience in control and automation and was able to make a real-life impact on a challenge that had been niggling BEP for a long time.

“For BEP, it demonstrated what could be achieved through a small investment in technology and bringing in some new digital skills. It has also proved that kick-starting the digital transformation journey need not be elaborate or expensive.”

This transformative shift has enabled BEP to transition towards a model that prioritises technical expertise over manual operation, upskilling the roles within the business and paving the way for growing the engineering workforce.

BEP provides an extensive range of chrome, nickel and copper plating

services and surface finishing, dealing with turbines and large rotors for the energy sector through to small shafts and all types of rotating equipment.

The business holds Fit for Nuclear (F4N) and ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 accreditations.

VERTIK-AL CELEBRATES 25 YEARS AS QUALICOAT APPROVED COATING APPLICATOR

Vertik-Al, the UK’s market leading independent powder coater, is celebrating 25 years as a QUALICOAT approved coating applicator after successfully passing its latest third-party inspection.

The Birmingham-based business was awarded the quality label in January proving conformity with QUALICOAT 2024 specifications. It is also one of a handful of approved members to offer QUALICOAT Seaside class powder coating, suitable for exposed sites.

The first licensed applicator

As the first QUALICOAT UK and Ireland licensed applicator in 1999, Vertik-Al has helped set the standard for other coating applicators and has raised awareness of the quality label amongst specifiers operating in a wide range of industries.

The QUALICOAT specification is regularly updated following evidence-based research and generally exceeds the BS

EN 12206 specification for powder coating. Therefore, specifiers and clients are assured of powder coating best practice when they opt to work with an approved applicator.

Committed to quality

John Park-Davies, group managing director at Vertik-Al says: “This is a tremendous achievement for Vertik-Al and is testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team and our unerring commitment to quality, over many years.

“In a challenging market such as now, this differentiates us from competing businesses. It assures our existing customers that they are receiving the very best possible product and service and proves to new potential customers that we are a trusted and consistent supplier.”

In recent years, Vertik-Al has invested significantly in plant, equipment, and training to further enhance its service and coating performance. This year, the company’s six-figure investment will include a new dry-off oven and upgraded pre-treatment tanks for its three horizontal lines.

Integral to development

Commenting on the 25-year anniversary, Chris Mansfield, vice chair of QUALICOAT

UK & Ireland, says: “We wish to congratulate Vertik-Al on reaching this incredible milestone. Their contribution over the past 25 years has been integral to the development of the QUALICOAT quality label in the UK & Ireland.

“As an organisation we are committed to standardising and improving the quality of powder coating for architectural aluminium and its alloys. With the support of member companies like Vertik-Al we can ensure consistent and unwavering high standards along the supply chain resulting in highperformance, durable finishes which can be enjoyed for many years.”

Further Affiliations

To further underpin its unrivalled commitment to quality, Vertik-Al is the only architectural aluminium applicator in the UK and Ireland to hold the GSB International Master Seal for Approved Coater Aluminium. The company is also a proud member of ALFED (Aluminium Federation) and CAB (Council for Aluminium in Building).

ADAPTA PREPARES THE ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCT DECLARATION 2024-2029 FOR ITS VIVENDI SDS (SUPER DURABLE SYSTEM) COLLECTIONS

Adapta colour is staying true to its commitment to provide proper environmental information about our products, as outlined in our management policy. There is a clear and transparent policy to disclose the environmental profile of our operations, and thus the environmental product declarations have been drafted regarding the new line of products ADAPTA VIVENDI SDS.

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are a means of transparently disclosing information in a way that is independently verified by a third party regarding the environmental characteristic of the product on the basis of a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA). The information is split into several impact categories (global warming, depletion of the ozone layer,

acidification, etc.), as well as additional information, such as emissions generated, waste generated, etc.

The EPD allows the environmental information of different products and services to be compared against other similar options. Our environmental product declaration has been verified according to ISO 14025 and EN 15804:2012+A2:2020, in accordance

with the Product Category Rules (PCR) RCP 100 (version 3 – 27/05/202 General construction products). When comparing EPDs of similar products, it is very important to check the reference PCR followed. The PCRs define the rules that must be followed by the LCS studies, as well as what information must appear in the EPD, which means that it is possible to see the operational parameters followed to calculate the various indicators.

The Carbon Footprint, which is a contemporary indicator that provides information about the impact on climate change, is one of the indicators calculated during the preparation of the EPD and measures the amount of greenhouse gases associated with that product or activity. In reality, the carbon footprint is a simplified version of the Life Cycle Analysis (LCV), which takes into account a single category of environmental impact, that of global warming.

In addition, these collections have been tested according to the ISO standard 16000-9:2006 regarding the determination of the emission of volatile organic compounds from building and furnishing products. In light of the results the company has received the distinction of an A+ (very low emissions) for its wall, ceiling, window, and door panels.

DO YOU HAVE A SPECIFICATION FOR CLEANLINESS WITHIN YOUR PROCESS?

No? But, clean is clean…..right?

Fraser Technologies Managing Director, Graham Fraser, would disagree.

“There is no such concept as completely clean! So, we need to determine, what is clean enough?”

At Fraser Technologies we regularly encounter customers who are unaware of the level of cleanliness they require. While this may seem a simple and obvious question, truly understanding the answer is critical. The implications of getting the answer wrong can have a lasting impact on your business, from a financial perspective and most importantly, the quality of your final products.

The cost of cleaningA fine balance:

As mentioned in the introduction to this article, we believe that ‘completely clean’ is a fanciful concept. The art to a good cleaning process is knowing the level of cleanliness required to meet the needs of the end user. This varies greatly by application, industry, and material. Fraser Technologies offer a comprehensive evaluation service that not only identifies the most suitable cleaning process for you; we also keep your wallet in mind. Underspecified cleaning processes can

be detrimental to a business’s production capabilities, impacting their bottom line. Consistency and repeatability are key when determining a cleaning process, and this can only be achieved once a cleanliness specification is in place.

Reject rates are a telling KPI linked to cleaning, and an underspecified process will result in high levels of rejected parts. One of Fraser Technologies long standing customers, specialising in imaging equipment, are only able to determine if a part has been sufficiently cleaned during its acceptance testing phase. At this stage, all the component parts have been assembled, meaning a quality failure results in a very costly rejection of the entire unit. Time, money, and materials are wasted because of contamination in one of the component parts. This is easily avoided by determining a robust cleanliness specification and designing a process to meet the required standards.

In a recent case study, by implementing a specification and delivering a bespoke solution converting from aqueous cleaning to solvent cleaning using OpteonTM SF79®, Fraser Technologies were able to reduce the reject rate of a pioneering, well known UK aerospace engine manufacturer by 90%.

48 PRETREATMENT, SURFACE PREPARATION, DEGREASING & CLEANING
Neat Oils from a turned parts process. Post clean photo, solvent cleaning. Rivets comparison dirty (left) to clean (right). Solvent cleaning

Conversely, over-specified cleaning processes can weigh heavily on the wallet also.

Whether it be high costs of capital equipment, high- rates of chemical consumption, or energy hungry processes; there can be significant financial impact on cleaning ‘too much’. This highlights the need for a diligent evaluation service prior to committing to a process.

But how?

Firstly, a process audit is needed to identify the materials of construction, as well as the contamination levels and types. Additionally, a deep understanding of the end-product and how it is used is needed, this helps to develop a foundation of knowledge which informs the analytical methods required.

Each application has a different cleanliness standard, and therefore a different method for analysis. In some applications, there is no need for complicated and costly methods as the ‘eye-test’ will suffice. Given we work in the field of precision cleaning, a more common technique for the ‘eye-test’ would be under a microscope of a strength suitable for detecting particulate residue or markings. This requires a strong quality management system and operator training to ensure reliability and repeatability in the assessment.

At our disposal are a range of more sophisticated analysis techniques that return quantifiable data. For example, contact angle shear testing gives a qualitative way to evaluate surfaces characteristics by observing the intermolecular interactions between the surface and a water droplet. Additionally, we can determine organic particulate concentrations by conducting a solvent extraction test.

While this is not an exhaustive list, it shows a range of analytical tools available and illustrates the importance of matching applications with the correct complexity of cleaning process.

Once a clearly defined and agreed cleanliness specification is in place, an assessment of all available cleaning technologies can be conducted.

Tailored approach:

Fraser Technologies defines its core values through three fundamental elements – Evaluate, Supply, and Support. This encapsulates a full-service commitment, that extends beyond product offerings.

This support begins during the evaluation phase and each application requires a

bespoke solution. Through completion of the process audits, analytical tools, and cleaning trials, we are able to offer customers a complete cleaning package suitable for their needs.

Any process offered should be compatible with all materials, meet the customers budget and environmental goals, but most of all exceed the cleaning requirements as determined by the cleanliness specification.

Fraser Technologies stand out by providing a range of evaluation services, including analytical tests, process audits, and cleaning trials. These services aim to optimise cleaning processes, ensure quality, and minimise costs. Discuss your cleanliness analysis with us today.

THE WONDER WIPE

In the good old days solvent hand cleaning was in common use. Then came along Vapor Degreasing, single stage alkali washing plants and on the larger installations multi stage pretreatment plants.

In the present day there has been a return to hand wiping products. This change has been brought about by legislation on vapour cleaning solvents, heating costs and space limitations. However, instead of the highly flammable solvent on a rag application this has become more sophisticated in the form of panel wipes,

PRETREATMENT, SURFACE PREPARATION, DEGREASING & CLEANING

STOWLIN CAN HELP MAXIMISE THE POTENTIAL OF YOUR PRE-TREATMENT SYSTEM

If you are in the metal finishing industry, then you have many different options when it comes to preparing your products prior to painting. One of those many possibilities for you is to chemically pre-treat your components. The most common types of chemical pre-treatments are applied in immersion or spray systems similar to those in the image.

The reasons for pre-treating components are essentially to increase adhesion, and corrosion protection of the substrate or paint system being utilised. Phosphates and chromates have been the go to products for many years, but with Health & Safety, and environmental sustainability at the forefront of people’s minds and design concepts, it may well now be the time to consider changing to one of BONDERITE© new generation coatings.

Some of the benefits of using these new generation coatings are;

They create less sludge.

They contain less harmful chemicals

They can operate at lower temperatures.

They are easy to control,

They can process multiple metal through the same stage

Both cleaner and conversion coating can sometimes be combined in the same stage.

With traditional pre-treatment chemicals, regular removal of sludge from treatment

baths is required. Theses maintenance days are not only expensive, they are time consuming, often performed on a weekend with the necessary overtime rates paid to staff. Specialist contractors may have to be employed for waste removal or disposal, and your staff are often in very close proximity to what on times can be hazardous chemicals. So it would be nice then for pretreatment chemicals to have the ability of extending the life of the bath. With the new generation coatings, bath life can be extended, and this saves you money. Due to the reduced amount of sludge being created with BONDERITE NGC’s, it has the added H&S and financial benefits of extending time between bath maintenance, thus reducing the proximity and contact time of operators with the chemicals. A win, win situation then.

Customers with traditional set ups often utilise two stages, one for the for the cleaner and one for the conversion

coating. Also with traditional products operating anywhere between 35 – 65 degrees, and in the two stages, switching to one cleaner / conversion coating bath at ambient temperature can massively reduce the gas or electric costs of running the process. But the savings do not end there, as BONDERITES new generation coatings operate at lower temperatures which again helps to reduce those bills. Coupled to the fact that the reduction in stages can offer the side benefit of allowing you to process quicker through pre-treatment, creating the potential of greater throughput. So as you can see, the NGC’s are great for your green credentials too!

So, in summary, these NGC’s can be easier to operate, easier to control, cheaper to run, have Environmental and H&S benefits. Stowlin can assist you in maximising the potential of your pre- treatment system, and for further information contact the Stowlin Sales team on 0116 278 5373.

EMBRACING NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN SURFACE TREATMENT

at Airedale Group

Our world is ever-changing, as are the processes and products in industry. The chemical world has needed to be agile in its response, creating new products and more efficient processes which use less energy and are more ecologically acceptable or that comply with the latest regulations and legislations.

Manufacturers can now choose from pre-treatment, surface cleaning and de-greasing products that bring the latest technologies to each stage of

surface treatment processes.

At Airedale Group, we have partnered with surface treatment specialists, Haug Chemie, to bring some of the latest

innovations in German engineering into the surface treatment world in the UK.

For example, in the pre-treatment of metals we know it is essential that thorough cleaning of components is carried out to allow the effective application of high-quality coatings. Historically, this has been achieved with the use of iron phosphating. Now, nanoceramic passivation technology, including Haug Chemie’s eskaphor, has been introduced to the process in which tiny ceramic particles are applied to the surface to create an effective coating to protect against damage. The nanoceramic passivation also provides a high-quality coating which is effective in corrosion protection.

However, this new process is also cost-saving as it creates less sludge and is effective at lower temperatures which reduces energy costs.

Cleaners have also been re-invigorated to meet growing expectations for more sustainable industrial products. Renewable raw materials are being used to create greener cleaners that adhere to restrictions aimed at protecting the environment, reducing climate change and creating safer conditions for workers.

eskaclean-nature is a versatile cleaner range which can be used in immersion, chamber spraying, high pressure jets

56 PRETREATMENT, SURFACE PREPARATION, DEGREASING & CLEANING

and automated or manual application as a powerful cleaner able to remove organic or inorganic material.

Renewable raw materials are used to make it a more environmentally-friendly option than traditional cleaners and have been developed with experts at the Central Innovation Programme for Small and Medium Enterprises in Germany.

The range is made with sustainable and natural materials which do not contain any synthetic or hazardous materials and only biodegradable surfactants. They also

have excellent wetting properties and are still highly effective at low temperatures.

Innovations can also be found in the de-greasing stage with the ability to save time and resources with a single product that combines both the degreasing and phosphating processes into one agent.

The quality of coatings on any surface depends on the integrity of the pretreatment stage which removes all impurities such as oil and grease and provides a surface that can maintain the

applied coating, and iron phosphating chemicals are ideal for this function.

Through Haug Chemie’s eskaphor range, we are able to offer alkaliphosphates, additives and alkalis to be applied in one operation to de-grease and phosphatise in a single operation. The liquid agents can be easily measured with pH controlled pumps which provide greater consistency and quality and eliminates the need to do this manually which can be time-comsuming and inaccurate.

Although many of the products and process traditionally used in surface treatment have been efficient for many years, there is a new wave of ultraeffective products which embrace new innovations and align with the changing landscape of industry which is more eco-aware and always looking for smarter solutions to reduce energy, costs and time.

Dürr adds the EcoGun AS MAN DC/EC to its range of manual spray guns

LESS PAINT CONSUMPTION: NEW ELECTROSTATIC SPRAY GUN FOR A MORE EFFICIENT PAINTING PROCESS

Dürr is adding an electrostatic air spray gun (ESTA Gun) to its range of manual spray guns. The new EcoGun AS MAN DC/ EC is a more sustainable way of painting, reducing overspray by about 40 percent. The spray gun comes in two versions, with direct or external charging. It is equally suitable for applying solvent and water-based paints, and its ergonomic handle and low weight make for comfortable work, even for extended periods.

The electrostatic air spray gun comes in two versions, with direct or external charging.

The new spray gun is ideal for applications where workpieces, such as tubes, rims, two-wheelers or train parts, are painted manually. The advantage here is the electrostatic charging of the paint and components. Dürr offers the spray gun in two versions: The EcoGun AS MAN DC (direct charging) has an electrode on the spray gun needle, which charges the paint and then applies it to a grounded component. The EcoGun AS MAN EC (external charging) positively charges the paint particles by passing them through an electrostatic field. A negatively charged workpiece then attracts these paint particles.

Low paint consumption and reduced work time

Electrostatics reduce paint consumption because the attraction between the particles and the workpiece results in less overspray during the painting process. As a result, the EcoGun AS MAN DC/ EC consumes up to 40 percent less paint than conventional air spray guns, significantly reducing paint consumption costs.

Simultaneously, the electrostatic charge accelerates the painting process by creating a so-called wrap-around effect. “The charged paint particles follow the electric field lines. As a result, it even reaches surfaces on the back of the workpiece,” explains Tom Reiner, a Dürr product engineer.

The maximum charging voltage for Dürr’s new spray gun is -60 kV for the direct charging version and -30 kV for the external charging version, delivering a high level of transfer efficiency. An integrated high-voltage LED indicates the electrostatic voltage state during painting. However, the manual air spray gun can also be used without high voltage and achieves fine atomization and the same precise application in this state.

GIVE YOUR OVEN MONITORING

THE PHOENIX FACTOR

Monitoring what is happening inside your cure oven is critical to understand how your paint or powder coating operation is working. PhoenixTM understands the challenges you face running your operation, to not only get the coating cure quality you need but keep your oven technology up and running as economically as physically possible. With energy costs and ever increasing labour costs you need to make your operation run efficiently and make those costs savings wherever possible. To help you get the best out of your oven PhoenixTM offer a monitoring toolbox to suit your specific needs.

The PhoenixTM Thru-process temperature profiling systems provide you with an accurate record of what temperature your product experienced in the cure oven. Thermal View Finishing software provided with the system converts the raw temperature profile data into meaningful information. The software is designed with all the analysis and process documentation tools to fully interpret and communicate paint cure performance.

Historically paint cure confirmation has often been restricted to calculating the time at temperature of the product and comparing the measured data to the recommended cure schedule of the coating supplier. This approach although simple, can give misleading information, as it does not use the entire temperature profile data. The chemical cure reaction rate is temperature dependent so temperatures above and even below the target cure temperature can contribute significantly to the total cure.

To provide an accurate method to quantify cure PhoenixTM have developed its own mathematical index of cure calculation referred to as the Phoenix Factor. The Phoenix Factor gives the paint technician a perfect numerical tool to easily and accurately confirm that the cure process is working to the coating supplier specification, guaranteeing quality of cure and eliminating rejects or need for rework and corresponding cost. Irrespective of the profile shape, as all profile data is utilised, it’s as simple checking for a correct consistent Phoenix Factor.

Based on the time temperature relationship of the coating cure reaction the level of cure (degree of cross linking), so coating cure performance, can be accessed.

Inputting the coating suppliers cure schedule information, the software automatically creates a best fit ISO cure line to

the target data with a choice of line fitting algorithm. Appling the ISO cure curve time temperature relationship the combined raw temperature profile data is converted into a single equivalent cure time at a single target temperature. The equivalent cure time is then compared to the original coating supplier specification to generate an easy to interpret single cure index value.

A Phoenix Factor value of 1.00 is a perfect match between profile temperature trace data and target coating supplier specification. Less than 1.00 is under cure and greater than 1.00 over cure. Applying the Phoenix Factor calculation, the

success of the oven cure operation can be quantified accurately and instantly allowing reporting both numerically and graphically against predetermined pass fail QA tolerances.

Phoenix Factor parameters stored in a Coating library for easy access and use with different coatings.

Employing the Coating Library feature, for each coating a library file can be generated. All necessary parameters for the application of Phoenix Factor analysis are stored in the coating file, removing the need for tedious parameter entry each run. Backed up with efficient local service and technical support, the PhoenixTM Finishing systems are a valuable and important addition to any paint process engineers coating QA tool kit.

AUTOMATION IN COATINGS –WHAT’S THE BIGGER PICTURE?

Automation is advancing the production processes across many industries –and the inks and coatings space is certainly no exception. When it comes to improvements around testing, automation allows for increased accuracy and repeatability, better resource management, a more efficient working space, huge cost reductions, and so much more.

But as the space continues to innovate, what does the bigger picture look like when it comes to testing?

Global test and measurement partner

Industrial Physics – home to specialist testing brands such as TQC Sheen and C&W Equipment – explored the prospect of automation under the guise of testing.

Access exclusive insights here!

New solutions supporting tried and tested methods

When it comes to testing tools, there’s no doubt that automation is causing disruption by bringing new solutions to the market. But first things first – that doesn’t mean that tried and tested solutions become redundant.

Solutions like the Testing Machines Inc. Digital Ink Rub Tester 10-20 for example. This is an instrument that’s been designed to measure scuffing or ink rub resistance across a wealth of materials – allowing several tests to be conducted using the machine, such as dry rub, wet rub, wet smear, and functional rub/wet rub. And the tool conforms

to trusted ASTM standards, giving the user confidence when carrying out the test.

Innovation and automation can often feel like frightening words to those who may have been working in the industry for a long time. But instead of replacing trusted instruments, automated tools are enhancing the proven methods that are already in existence.

Automated accessories enhancing testing

Take the TQC Sheen LinQ for example. The LinQ is a communication component that connects testing systems to independent software. Whether you’re conducting washability testing, viscosity testing, or film application, it doesn’t matter –the tool can be used across a variety of applications.

The smart piece of equipment essentially enables you to control the settings of your larger testing system and automatically make adjustments according to more precise specifications – allowing you to achieve more accurate results than ever before. The tool allows you to eliminate hours of time waiting for results and means you can re-focus resources on more useful analysis.

SMOOTHER, SHINIER AND FASTER!

A real-world experience of a rectifier upgrade

When a UK metal finishing company started experiencing quality and repetition issues, they knew that it was time to upgrade their rectifiers. What they didn’t know was how much of a difference choosing a KraftPowercon solution would make to their business.

“The change in how the chrome plate was applied became evident with the very first job we plated. It was a pair of one of the largest items that we do (almost 5,000kg) with a complex conforming anode construction attached. We normally have to chrome plate these over two nights for 32 hours in total, checking after the first session for concentricity.

When we processed the first rotor using our new FlexKraft™ rectifier, we found that we had already achieved the full required deposition by the end of the first 16 hour-session! The chrome plate thickness was also significantly more consistent: the low-current density areas had more chrome than we’d been seeing before, and the high current density areas had less over-plate. It was an unmitigated success.”

Of course, you can’t tell from just one example, but when the customer plated the second rotor the same way, they got exactly the same results. What used to be four nights of chrome plating was achieving higher standards in just two nights. This programme is now used for all the rotors that the client chrome plates, and they are consistently achieving the same results, again and again: surfaces were coming out from

the plating bath with a better surface finish, and a smoother deposition with high lustre.

The success story doesn’t end there. As well as saving time and improving quality, our client noticed something else.

“One of the most significant things that we noticed was the vast drop in our energy bill. The new rectifier, albeit 4000 amps larger than the previous one, was using less electricity than its predecessor. The promise of greater efficiency was totally founded.”

“We have gone from manual control, poor efficiency and fluctuating quality to automated control, and excellent efficiency, resulting in vast energy savings and a greatly improved quality. “

Low ripple is the main reason for more efficient plating into low current density areas and controlling over-plate on high current density areas. With the extremely linear DC voltage, you can achieve a much more even coating on components. If a heavier deposit is required, you can simply automatically ramp up the current, gradually reducing plating times.

“The energy savings alone are enough of a deciding factor to switch to these state-of-the-art KraftPowercon rectifiers. And with the added automation, we now have 100% control of the process. That means that we now control when the process starts and ends – saving more

energy, chemicals and post-chrome processing. This also cuts labour and consumables, which means we can offer our customers more competitive pricing structures.”

Here’s the final word from our valued client, who we’d like to thank for such in-depth positive feedback.

“I did get other quotations from alternative manufacturers, but they didn’t come close to these in quality, functionality or price of FlexKraft. Most didn’t even offer the built-in polarity switching. We made the sensible decision. I’m sure many others will.”

WHAT’S THAT COMING OUT OF THE BATH - IS IT A MONSTER?

Last year, SA Fabrications was commissioned to create a bespoke dragon sculpture, designed to stand pride of place during a National Open Gardens event in June. Due to being permanently located outside and exposed to the elements, Humber Galvanizing Ltd was called upon to protect it against rust and corrosion.

Steve Albinger, Founder at SA Fabrications, said: “Often I’m approached by customers to make some weird and wonderful items – with this being no exception. It was an absolute pleasure to create the dragon, and we wanted to ensure that this magnificent creature would be protected to the very best of our abilities against weathering or rusting, able to be enjoyed by many at both this Open Gardens event, as well as any planned in the future.”

Fabricated mainly from sheet metal, the dragon stands at almost two metres by two metres, and weighs an incredible 500kg.

“After much planning and preparation, we sent the dragon to our friends at Humber Galvanizing where it was hot-dipped in molten zinc at 450C, which ensures that it will be able to withstand the elements for up to 70 years,” Steve added. “Afterwards, it was powder coated in antique silver to enhance the intricate details of the monster.”

During the galvanizing process, the molten zinc metallurgically bonds to the steel, which provides a unique and sustainable finish that has the greatest resistance to damage, and long-term protection against corrosion.

Tony Linsley, Sales Manager at Humber Galvanizing, added: “Yet again, it’s been an absolute pleasure to work with Steve at SA Fabrications - this time in futureproofing this incredible sculpture. We’re always very excited to see what he will bring to the plant, and he certainly didn’t disappoint. Seeing the dragon emerge from the galvanizing bath was a true spectacle, and it’s a real joy to know that this now stands proudly in an equally exquisite garden, and will be admired by many for years to come.”

Humber Galvanizing is part of Wedge Group Galvanizing Ltd, the largest hot-dip galvanizing organisation in the UK with a history dating back over 150 years. With 14 plants strategically placed across the country, the firm offers a truly national galvanizing service.
