Dear readers, Welcome to our May Business and Innovation Issue. David O. Adeife once said, “Innovate to change the rules of the game.” Innovation is, at its core, about solving problems— and there are as many ways to innovate as there are types of problems to solve. Every day people are finding better ways to do things. On our cover, Emil Chamie, Business Development Manager at STK at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, one of the trendiest steak houses in Las Vegas, talks about the STK brand and their latest innovative approach to utilizing a new app called LEVELS for a seamless dining experience. Chamie alongside Jonas Frey, CEO of the LEVELS App, gives us wonderful insight on how this advanced technology is taking the dining experience to the next LEVEL. Just for our readers, LEVELS App is giving a $50 Gift Voucher to dine at STK for new members. You can scan the QR code on page 35 and enjoy all the rewards and benefits that come with free membership. Elsewhere in this issue, we are further inspired by innovation as Toyota featured the Mothers of Invention (MOI) Class of 2018, celebrating pioneers who are driving positive change in the world through innovation and

May 2018

entrepreneurship. Since its inception, the Toyota Mothers of Invention program has recognized the ingenuity of 22 women with a total of more than $1 million in grants. “These women are game changers who are creating massive impact in the world around them and the team at Toyota is thrilled to support them in their mission to make a difference,” said Jacquelyn Birdsall, Senior Engineer, Toyota Motor North America. And just in time for Mother’s Day, turn to page 29 for the perfect gift ideas to put a smile on her face and help say thank you for who she is—and all that she does. I hope the stories in this issue stir creativity, inspiration, and spark growth. Thanks to innovative ideas, we can be optimistic about the world’s future–and ours. Best wishes,

May Flowers for Your Home.

We have addressed so many topics since December, of how to personalize your home.

around them. How nice to have them replace good air with bad, without needing mechanical devices to do the same thing.

This month, let’s talk gardening in and out of your beautiful tower spot. A recent design magazine was on topic with how to utilize a smaller area but achieve great looks. Let’s face it, we may like the look of some silk plants and trees, but the real thing is so much better for us, environmentally. Green plants and trees produce oxygen, while they are processing the air

There are stone pots, beautiful and timeless. Staging them in different heights and colors can add a zest to that corner you never know what to do with. Then there are planters that look like pottery, but so much lighter weight making them easier to move around, another source of artfulness.

StageThis Interior Design In the nineties I worked mainly with silk plants, because they were new, and many were very good aesthetically when I was working with those pot shelves the builders were in love with then. Why am I shifting to the real thing? Not because they are prettier than the silks, but you can get so much variety in colors and textures, so you can transform a one-dimensional space. The introduction of these plants can also be complimented with a waterfall. There are so many varieties of these in many different stores. You could find the one you like first, then place the pots and plants around it.

May 2018

Now, you transport your lovely home from winter to summer with a breath of fresh air. If you have not seen the advertisements for all the wonderful choices in these products, you owe it to yourself to go out and see what is available to you. Watch how the different heights in the greenhouses take your eye from one place to another. You can achieve greatness in a small space, all while having fun. Also, see my newest book A Rare Vintage in Kindle and Amazon. A story to read while you sit and enjoy your new waterfall.

Cliff & Darlene Miller

Written by Yelena Brezhneva & Todd Margoluis Las Vegas is home to many incredible, talented, and unique people. Over the last year, the residents of this brilliant city have truly come together as a community and supported not only strangers but each other in a most compassionate way. I recently had the honor of meeting and sitting down with a local couple who not only run a successful business but whose hearts and philanthropic efforts match the enormity and splendor that is Las Vegas. Meet Cliff and Darlene Miller― owners of MJ Christensen Diamonds. MJ Christensen Diamonds has been a known and trusted brand in Las Vegas since 1939. And from the moment Cliff and Darlene took over the business in 2000, they have continued to maintain the same core values and commitment to their guests and the community. “We take our responsibility as your Las Vegas jeweler very seriously, and as a local family-owned business in the Las Vegas valley, we believe strongly in our responsibility to serve the community at large,” comments Cliff Miller.

From the moment you enter their beautiful store in Boca Park, you are met with a comfortable grandeur and a smiling face. The ambience is warm and inviting… as though you are entering a friend’s living room complete with beautiful chairs and a magnificent glass table featuring a stunning floral arrangement. I asked Cliff about the reasoning behind this unique setting. “We believe in relationships first. We want to get to know our guests to better understand how we can serve them. I have never been a fan of the ‘sales pitch’. Simply put― we don’t sell…we serve.” I learned quickly that this is not just a job for Cliff and Darlene…this is their passion. And it shows in how they treat all their guests― whether they are dignitaries, a nervous groom-to-be or teenager looking for that perfect gift.

Darlene Miller wearing 18kt white gold 8.08ctw round brilliant cut graduated diamond 17” necklace valued at $23,990.00 Selcen Kavruklar wearing 14kt white gold 9.81ctw round brilliant cut diamond leaf collar necklace valued at $43,875.00

Next came the fun part… checking out all the jewelry! When Darlene says that MJ truly has something for everyone, she really means it. Upon walking around the store, I discovered an amazing array of fine diamond jewelry from designers such as Hearts On Fire, Michael M, Roman and Jules, Ritani, Noam Carver, Tycoon, Bright Crystal Diamonds and much more. On the other end of the spectrum, I found wonderfully affordable, fun, and creative collections from Uno de 50, Slate & Tell, Amen, Dog Fever, laBELL, Belle Etoile and more. Additionally, I found a wonderful selection of watches― both new and pre-owned. Besides all the pretty jewelry, MJ provides services that cover everything from repairing and cleaning jewelry, resizing, replacing watch batteries and appraisals. MJ also offers an exclusive warranty program provided by Preferred Jewelers International even if you bought your jewelry elsewhere. In keeping with generations of family history in the jewelry business, Cliff’s son Rusty always had a fascination with jewelry which led him to become a distinguished designer. With that, MJ offers guests the opportunity to bring in their aged jewelry and turn it into a personalized one-of-a-kind art-piece. As a woman who loves the mystique of diamonds, I just had to ask Cliff about all things diamonds. “Diamonds are the only thing we have in this lifetime that can be passed down to future generations that May 2018

will stay the same as the day they were purchased. If a select diamond is properly identified and secured then probably in the next 10 years it can go up 100%-150% in value, due to scarcity of those diamonds,” explained Cliff. “The internet has created a challenge when shopping for diamonds as many only see a price. A lot of people don't realize that carat is a weight and not a size. You could have a carat that's 5.5mm in diameter or it could be where it should be 6.5mm and properly spread out. All these factors and many others make a huge difference in price.” “You have to know what you’re doing and what to look for when buying diamonds because the subtleties in diamonds are like no other item on the planet. For diamonds more than 6ct, slight color change, slight inconsistency and mistakes in polishing can kill the value. Two human hairs difference in size can create a possible $110,000 difference.” Professionalism and enthusiasm were penetrating every word that Cliff spoke. And Cliff knows his diamonds. Cliff and Darlene have achieved the level of Graduate Gemologist with GIA (Gemological Institute of America). Cliff is a member of the GIA League of Honor which is an award program that recognizes forward thinking leaders in the industry. Cliff and Darlene's names are also on the walls of the Gemological Institute of America in Carlsbad and there’s even a classroom named after MJ Christensen Diamonds. Cliff and Darlene are also a Certified Gemologist Appraisers with the American Gem Society and Cliff is a member of the Circle of Distinction with AGS. Within the industry, he resides on the Retail Board of the Centurion Jewelry Show.

Cliff & Darlene Miller Photo courtesy MJ Christensen Diamonds “We wouldn't imagine living anywhere else but Las Vegas,” said Darlene. “Our community has gone through so many challenges and supporting non-profits has always been a priority to us.” Her husband Cliff nodded with a smile confirming his lovely wife's words. Darlene's passion for helping others truly shines as bright as diamonds. When I say it was my honor to meet Cliff and Darlene…it truly was. They are a rarity in today’s world as they lead by example in following their core mission and ethics in both their personal and professional lives. Since arriving in Las Vegas, Cliff and Darlene have enjoyed supporting a multitude of charities including Southern Highland’s Charitable Foundation of which they are Founders of the Boys & Girls Club of Southern Highlands, Best Buddies of Nevada, Dress for Success, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and many others. They are also prior Sunrise Children’s Foundation honorees. Cliff serves on the Foundation Board of Opportunity Village and is a member of the board of Nevada Blind Children’s Foundation. Darlene is on the Advisory Board of Best Buddies, the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Las Vegas Gala Committee and is a member of WLC (Women’s Leadership Council of United Way Southern Nevada. She was recognized in 2010 by the Cultural Diversity Foundation as a Golden Hand Service Award Recipient for outstanding service in the community and was recognized by Silver State Awards with the Humanitarian Award in 2016.

Before I left, I asked Cliff one more nugget about how women choose diamonds. His response?

“When women see certain diamonds there's an instant connection. Stones choose the owner. You could look at 20 diamonds, but one will look at you with puppy eyes and will ask you to take it home.” Spoken as a true aficionado and a man who loves his work.

An Appreciation Letter to All Mothers OutThere Written by Jennifer Gonzales

Once a year, we have an amazing opportunity to give back and appreciate the ones that have made everything in life possible— our moms. There are times where we love you a lot and there are times where maybe not so much. There are times, where we get along and times where we may not agree, but in the end— you are still there no matter what. UNCONDITIONAL LOVE Thank you for having unconditional love. No matter how many times we seem to fail you, your love never seems to change. All the times that we may have caused you to be angry, hurt, and worried, you still have love to give with open arms. From the minute we were born to raising us from kids, you were there. You were there to pick out our outfits, tried your best to attend every event, and made sure that there was always food on the table. No one else’s love can compare to yours, and that’s what makes you great.

rude, selfish, and said hurtful things when we didn’t have it our way, but you were forgiving and the love in your heart never changed. COMFORTER Thank you for being a comforter, when times were tough. You were always there when no one else was around. You heard our concerns, listened to our worries, and helped us with our struggles. You were there through all the bad grades, broken friendships, and heart breaks. There is no one else in the world who had our back the way our moms did.

Thank you for being forgiving, when there are times that you shouldn’t have been. Growing up, I know that we can be ungrateful with the little things, and always want what everyone else had no matter if you could have afforded it or not. There were times where we were

Thank you for believing in me even when I didn’t believe in myself. You knew that we were always meant to grow up to be something great. That’s what you worked so hard, to make sure that when older we could have doors of opportunities opened

to us that no one can shut. You believed in that one day, we could be whatever it is that we wanted, as long as we worked for it. You never gave up hope, and always wanted the best, even if we didn’t see it that way. All those times that you were being hard on us, was only to make us better. The older I get the more I see all that you’ve done for me, and all that you continue to do for me. I can’t say this more than enough, that I appreciate and value everything you do, and it is because of you that is why I am who I am today. This Mother’s Day, I want to say thank you to all the wonderful moms out there, even though you have one of the toughest jobs in this world— you still manage to be great.

Mom is the epitome of being a woman– equal parts strong and feminine, nurturing, smart, and playful. We've got just the right Mother's Day gift ideas to put a smile on her face and help say thank you for who she is—and all that she does.

Toyota Recognizes Visionary Women at 9th Annual Women in the World Summit Toyota Mothers of Invention Class of 2018 Honorees Develop Solutions to Combat Human Trafficking and Drug-facilitated Assault and Create Technology Platform to Connect Families The 9th annual Tina Brown Live Media Women in the World Summit, presented and co-hosted by Toyota, featured the Mothers of Invention (MOI) Class of 2018, celebrating pioneers who are driving positive change in the world through innovation and entrepreneurship. Three grants in the amount of $50,000 each were awarded for groundbreaking work in developing solutions to combat human trafficking, drug-facilitated sexual assault, and to create an educational technology platform that connects families. The Summit took place April 12-14.

Since its inception in 2012, Toyota has collaborated with the Tina Brown Live Media editorial team to identify three women annually who affect change throughout the world and have tremendous passion: the finalists meet a myriad of criteria, solving large-scale problems, affecting impact and growth, introducing new product categories, finding solutions to societal issues around the globe, innovating technologies and more. Since its inception, the Toyota Mothers of Invention program has recognized the ingenuity of 22 women with a total of more than $1 million in grants. www.HighRiseLife.com

"These women are game changers who are creating massive impact in the world around them and the team at Toyota is thrilled to support them in their mission to make a difference," said Jacquelyn Birdsall, Senior Engineer, Toyota Motor North America. "The Toyota Mothers of Invention network now stands at 22 brilliant women – we celebrate their success and applaud their efforts to come together to solve challenges and create lasting change among people and communities everywhere." In addition to building great cars, Toyota is committed to improving society and the lives of others, championing solutions to issues around food, water, shelter, healthcare, electricity, sanitation, safety and education. As a sponsor of the Women in the World Summit since its inception seven years ago, Toyota has cultivated the Toyota Mothers of Invention program by not only awarding MOIs with the Driving Solutions Grant, but also facilitating networking opportunities, building relevant connections, and providing access to intellectual capital to help their organizations and causes go places. "I couldn't be prouder of this year's Toyota Mothers of Invention participants whose breakthrough inventions offer incredibly smart and simple solutions to timely problems that affect us all," says Tina Brown, Founder & CEO of Tina Brown Live Media. This year, the three honorees – Maxeme Tuchman, Caribu; Emily Kennedy, Marinus Analytics; and Danya Sherman, KnoNap – will be highlighted through in-depth conversations over the course of the Summit program. More information about the Mothers of Invention Class of 2018: Maxeme Tuchman (CEO and co-founder, Caribu) Miami-based Maxeme Tuchman inspires with her story of Caribu, an education platform that helps parents, extended family and mentors to read and draw with children when they're not in the same location. Used by military parents stationed overseas to parents traveling on business trips and more, the Caribu experience is an engaging livestream shared-screen experience featuring hundreds of books in six languages. The inspiration to invent Caribu came from seeing a photograph of a deployed U.S. soldier who was struggling to read a book to his daughter through a laptop webcam. Emily Kennedy (CEO, Marinus Analytics) Emily Kennedy is the brains behind Traffic Jam, a groundbreaking technology used to apprehend sex traffickers and rescue trafficked victims that's relied upon by law enforcement in the U.S. and abroad. Traffic Jam is a suite of AI tools that turn big data into actionable intelligence for sex trafficking investigations, including the first facial recognition technology designed to find human trafficking victims online. Inspired by

having witnessed children being trafficked when she visited Europe as a 16-year-old tourist, she began working on the technology in 2011 at the Carnegie Mellon University Robotics Institute. Kennedy hails from California. Danya Sherman (Founder and CEO, KnoNap) Danya Sherman is a young entrepreneur and the founder of KnoNap, a detection device cleverly disguised as a napkin that detects the most common date rape drugs. With one in 13 college-aged individuals having suspected their drink was laced with a rape drug last year, Danya's invention is timely and important. Motivated by her own experiences as well as the shared experiences of other women, Sherman wanted to make a difference to help women feel comfortable in any social situation. Sherman resides in Washington D.C. and is a junior at George Washington University.

Q: Can you tell me about STK at The Cosmopolitan and its unique dining experience? Emil: STK is a unique concept that artfully blends the modern steakhouse and chic lounge into one. We like breaking the barriers in the restaurant industry with live DJ entertainment. Guests frequently make new friends with other tables; they will join them for shots, making this a very interactive social environment. The energy here is all about social connections so you have people mingling, dancing, and dining together. Q: How would you sum up STK’s at The Cosmopolitan approach to cuisine? Emil: We have a very modern take on cuisine, so we can cater to a high-volume while being a high-quality steakhouse; we deliver excellence and efficiency to our clientele.

We have a lot of new eye-catching dishes, especially the shellfish platter with a dry ice presentation; our goal with tables is to create a dining experience mixed with a little extravagance. Q: What’s your favorite item on the menu? Emil: The yellowtail crudo is a must-try at STK. The yellowtail sashimi is thinly sliced, drizzled with a spicy ponzu sauce, and finished with garlic crisps. It leaves you wanting more. Our prime cut Delmonico rib eye is just that; it is uniquely dry aged upwards of thirty days and the tenderness is unrivaled. The concentrated flavor and texture make it my favorite steak on the menu, without question. Q: What’s a dessert we must try? Emil: #The-Cloud— it’s a big hit at STK, masterfully created by Chef Brigette Contreras. #The-Cloud is a full-on presentation of cotton candy dessert comprised of Angel food cake topped with white chocolate cremeux, strawberry ice cream, strawberry compote, and whipped cream all hidden within a cloud of cotton candy. The cotton candy is drizzled in liquor and set on fire for a dramatic effect when served. It’s a big hit with celebrities and social media. We’re all about presentation at STK. www.HighRiseLife.com

Jonas Frey, CEO of LEVELS App, Selcen Kavruklar, Editor-in-Chief of High Rise Life Magazine & Emil Chamie, Business Development Manager at STK Las Vegas

Jonas Frey, CEO of LEVELS App & Emil Chamie, Business Development Manager at STK Las Vegas Q: What is something that people might not know about the STK at The Cosmopolitan that they should? Emil: The first thing that strikes guests is walking into a steakhouse and having a live DJ playing in the restaurant. It’s not your typical steakhouse, it’s about leaving your worries at the door to enjoy an intriguing social environment. It’s not just the food, décor, or nightly music– it’s the combination of all these things that creates a vibe you May 2018

can only find at STK. It’s a full-on social experience. Q: What are some of your personal highlights in the industry? Emil: Growing up with a Lebanese background, dining for me isn’t just about sitting down to have a meal, it is about wanting to create a unique experience full of love. I have a strong passion for this industry from traveling and working in fine

dining venues internationally. I was a big fan and a frequent guest to STK when they first opened for their unique atmosphere. I was immediately drawn to the STK culture; the team we have make this brand successful- we like to call them the STK family. Our DNA is simple- we let our character and personality shine, we respect each other, and most of all, we have fun in the process. After all, we are all about creating memorable experiences and that starts with our family. Passion and love is everything from the inside out here at STK. Q: What’s next for STK? Emil: We are about to open our San Diego location this year, located at Andaz San Diego. It is a highly anticipated opening, as every other location has been, and everyone is eager and excited for it. STK has locations in New York City, South Beach, Chicago, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Orlando,

Denver, Toronto, London, Ibiza, Milan, Dubai, and more projected openings to come. Q: We noticed STK at The Cosmopolitan is using the LEVELS App. Why does it open doors for clients? Emil: By using the app, we get to see what the App calls the “level” of the clients which translates to their spending and dining behavior. Rather than just having a guest walk in blindly, we get a good indicator on what type of person is coming. So far, we have not been disappointed. At STK, we are usually fully committed every night and this is a good way for us to offer a benefit which they call “preferred seating” to only certain level-users – by that, we know who is having seats reserved and accommodate accordingly, more often than not even last minute. A cool thing is that the App sends the client their bill after dining automatically, so we don’t have to drop a check at the end of dinner which saves time and makes the whole process much more efficient for the guest and the restaurant. It seems LEVELS has found a solution to offset the awkwardness of the check drop after a fantastic meal. Q: How does LEVELS work when making a reservation? Emil: Everything works through a messenger on the App, and guests are usually notified immediately as soon as reservation is made. They simply walk-in, get recognized by the host,- since the App shows us a picture of the client- and get seated; it’s a simple

process. I like that it gives the guest and us the opportunity to remedy possible mishaps directly, rather than the guest going to a public platform without a bidirectional interaction. I feel clients are happier if we can do something immediately for them over having to write about their encounters online. JONAS FREY, CEO OF LEVELS App Q: How long did it take you to create and launch LEVELS? How does this App change this growing market? Jonas: First, LEVELS was created by a team of people - no great thing is built by one man. The App launched on March 7th, 2018- a team of now almost 40 has been working on this project for the past 2 years. I believe that the luxury market is one of the only markets which has not been completely automated yet. There is a huge variety of excellent services in the market but also an even bigger selection of useless overpriced tourist traps; for the consumer, it is hard to distinguish by looking at common online rating platforms since many of the truly great luxury services live on a recurring client base and do not boast great websites with automated booking procedures due to the lack of volume. These sometimes complicated booking procedures and the absence of transparency hinders new clients to “try” new things. By implementing one standard, one button- what we call inflatable payment-method, which is authorized by the face of our clients- we want to make this market more transparent and accessible to create a seamless lifestyle experience worldwide.

Q: How did you get funding for LEVELS? At the beginning of 2016, I pitched the idea to Andreas Weishaupt who took the risk of the initial funding of $150,000. After completing milestone by milestone, he continued to be the sole investor with an investment which is now almost $6 million. An interesting fact about this relationship is that unlike many other investors, Mr. Weishaupt is extremely involved in the development of the business on a strategic level. I would say no matter at which location of the planet he or I are at any given day, we speak at least one hour on the phone. I believe this played a big part in our recent success since Mr. Weishaupt represents the target group of our higher levels and gives me real life advice and feedback which I could not buy at any consulting firm.   Q: Which markets are you currently in? Las Vegas was our very first market. Quality is our number one priority and since we are introducing a whole new way of paying, we needed to make sure that everything worked flawlessly- this perfection process took us almost one year. We reached this point and are now adding on new partners daily. Within the last year, we already established partnerships in Beverly Hills, Miami, New York, Munich, London, Paris, Singapore and a few more. These cities will be the focus of expanding our service in the next 12 months. Q: How is LEVELS different from other reservation apps? Jonas: LEVELS is not focused on restaurants alone but sees the luxury market as a way of life. Therefore, we cater to anyone that wants a reliable and seamless lifestyle experience for fine dining, great shopping, spas, travel,

need to sign for receipts or bills wherever you decide to bring your business, which allows for ease of lifestyle and better security. You get a copy of your receipt sent to your phone and email after it has been processed. Breaking into Spring

Beauty Tips for A New Season From L’Oréal Paris Celebrity Makeup Artist Sir John With the change of season here and warmer weather quickly approaching, there is no better time to update your beauty routine. To help get you ready, L'Oréal Paris celebrity makeup artist Sir John shares his spring-essential tips and product recommendations. AN EYE-CATCHING LOOK Spring is the perfect time to experiment with a bright eye. To add dimension to the lids and illuminate the eyes, Sir John loves a washed lavender look for spring using the Infallible Pro-Last Liner in Purple. Then, apply a lighter lavender shade of eyeshadow under the bottom lash line and around the entire upper eyelid. Sir John suggests finishing the look by applying Voluminous X Fiber Mascara to get an extreme lash look. The black primer and fiber mascara system leaves lashes lengthened and perfected.

Sir John also strongly believes in the importance of brows. He says, "Brows are key to your facial structure, therefore key to completing any look." Sir John recommends to give brows a defined, voluminous look. Complete the look with a neutral lipstick. Sir John turns to Colour Riche Shine Lipstick in Sparkling Rose because of its hydrating, comfortable formula and pretty hue.

PROTECT, PROTECT, PROTECT The most important protection to wear in the spring – be it on the last ski run of the season, or the first outdoor brunch of the year - is SPF. Sir John recommends a moisturizer with SPF to hydrate and protect skin from environmental damage. His favorite is the Revitalift Triple Power Day Moisturizer due to its lightweight formula and ability to protect against UVB and UVA rays. He likes to punch up the look by pairing a bright hydrated lip with healthy-looking skin; use True Match Lumi Glotion for a natural, glowy look. SPRING (HAIR) CLEANING Masking is the perfect way to pamper and refresh hair after the winter months. Try NEW L'Oréal Paris EverPure Sheet Masks – available in both Deep Moisture and Intense Repair. These innovative sheet masks for hair are easy-to-use and deliver exceptional results. After shampooing, simply twist and wrap hair fully into cap and massage in formula. Stay and Play at Jamaica Bay Inn Marina del Rey Written by Merilee Kern If your idea of a good vacation involves water as the prime attraction, then Marina del Rey is for you. Billed as Los Angeles’ “coastal playground,” this city boasts water activities abounding year-round. Surprisingly just a short four-mile drive from the LAX airport, Marina del Rey is central to the LA coastline. It’s a short walking distance to the famed Venice Beach and just a bike ride away from trendy Abbott Kinney Boulevard and gorgeous Santa Monica, which each have a character and charm all their own. But, for its part, Marina del Ray is a stellar waterfront destination with perennial aqua and outdoor-oriented recreation options for families, couples, friend groups and business travelers, alike. From sailing, harbor and dinner cruises, and yacht excursions to scuba, snorkeling,

parasailing, kayaking, and stand-up paddle boarding to sport fishing, whale-watching and more, Marina del Ray is rife with activity opportunities. And while the city is certainly replete with accommodation choices, one boutique property in particular Jamaica Bay Inn offers a distinctive array of features and benefits paired with warm and gracious hospitality that sets it apart from the pack. Location. Location. Location. There are only a handful of hotels in Los Angeles that actually sit right on the beach, and this is one of them. However, the particular setting for this property is quite serene, clean and decidedly family friendly. Set on Marina del Rey’s peaceful Mother’s Beach, Jamaica Bay Inn provides a quiet cul-de-sac waterfront respite without the usual noise and crowds of typical beach areas. www.HighRiseLife.com

Fab Fare Al Fresco Boasting its own on-site eatery, Beachside Restaurant & Bar—helmed by Chef Victor Morales—is a bright and fresh space offering superb waterfront views amid indoor/outdoor bar and dining options. It’s here where you really “feel” like you’re on vacation as both the view and the breeze is delightful. In the foreground there’s the clean sandy beach leading to the waterway that’s active with swimmers, kayakers, paddle boarders and such. Further beyond is a marina filled with gorgeous sailboats, which provides a stunning backdrop. Viewing the sailboat masts against the blue sky during the day and dusk in the early evening is a treat all its own. Diners also enjoy this entire vista while sitting inside the nautical-chic eatery where windows and natural light abounds. Beachside also doesn’t disappoint food-wise as the fresh California coastal cuisine here is excellent. Open for breakfast/brunch, lunch (as all day dining), happy hour and dinner, Chef Morales’ menu is casual and approachable, but her penchant for quality, flavor and presentation is readily evident. On the current iteration of the menu, dishes like to-die-for Brussels Sprouts with sambal sauce, Thai basil, mint and peanuts, Ahi Tuna Tartare, Tempura Fish Tacos, 10-ounce Kurobuta Pork Chop and Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes delight. Here you can sip, savor and settle into “vacation mode.” Notably, Beachside serves gluten-free items and organic entrees are available on the various menus throughout the day and night, including organic chicken, sustainable wild fish, and environmentally conscious farm-raised fish. Many also have private balconies with panoramic water and marina views. Other hotel amenities include a fitness center, a 24-hour business center, beach cruiser rentals and a heated (year-round) outdoor beach-side pool and Jacuzzi. Valet parking is also available, as are water taxis eager to take guests from Mother’s Beach to various stops around the Marina. With its waterfront location and as creature comforts abound, Jamaica Bay Inn truly offers everything a vacationer needs to relax and enjoy some quality fun-in-the-Southern California sun. And, given its proximity to world-class restaurants and leisure activities, not to mention the mere 15-minute driving distance from LAX, guests at the Inn have access to the best Los Angeles has to the offer while feeling worlds away. North Italia Santa Monica Founded on Food with Integrity Written by Merilee Kern Sometimes a restauranteur comes along who changes the game. Raises the bar. Ups the ante. That’s very much the case with Sam Fox—the creative visionary behind Fox Restaurant Concepts, which has taken hip and healthy hospitality to new heights. From dropping out of college and siphoning the tuition funds into his first restaurant endeavor at the age of 20, to now operating almost 50 locations and 14 unique concepts throughout the United States, Sam has cooked up one of America’s fastest growing restaurant hospitality groups.

This 11-time James Beard Award “Outstanding Restaurateur” semifinalist and New York Times best-selling cookbook author boasts a litany of delicious dining brands, including a number of notables throughout Southern California such as The Henry in West Hollywood, Blanco Tacos & Tequila in San Diego and Flower Child in Santa Monica. Also ensconced in the heart of Santa Monica’s famed 3rd Street Promenade is North Italia—a decidedly lively locale featuring scratch-made, season-driven, farm-to-table Italian fare that’s offered alongside www.HighRiseLife.com

inventive, drool-inducing, hand-shaken craft cocktails and beers. While artisanal handmade pasta and pizza reigns supreme at North Italia, the food is closely rivaled by its bar program. With concoctions like Mozzafiato (Ketel One vodka, smashed cucumber, lime, Chareau aloe vera liqueur, and green chartreuse); Quiet Italian Gentleman (Bulleit Rye, Cocchi Vermouth di Torino, Campari, Disaronno Amaretto); And Julietta (ginger-infused Smirnoff, vanilla, St. Germain, lime, and Prosecco), there’s an elixir for everyone. Locavore craft beers include options from Ballast Point, Green Flash, Stone Brewing Company and more. Given my own penchant for seasonally-oriented, detail-driven food that’s best realized with a handcrafted approach, I popped into North Italia for dinner service. It quickly became evident what all the fuss was about as, the mindfulness put toward curating top-quality ingredients and executing food with integrity is apparent. Here, details matter. My journey through North Italia commenced with a Grilled Artichoke served with sea salt, truffle, Grana Padano (a semi-aged hard Italian cheese), and lemon aioli. Unlike the usual steamed version, North Italia’s grilled variety has an earthy overtone that’s beautifully tempered with the savory garnishments. The Margherita pizza my party ordered as an appy also duly impressed, with its fresh mozzarella, red sauce, olive oil and fresh, fragrant basil that I only do wish there would have been more of. The entrée course allowed me to savor two marvelous mains. The first was Chicken Pesto, comprised of Gigli (Campanelle bellflower-shaped) pasta cooked al dente with just the right amount of bite, tossed with garlic, basil, and topped with toasted pine nuts and crispy capers. The second dish was the Diver Scallops—three well-seasoned and seared, medium rare-cooked morsels served

alongside a rich and creamy parmesan risotto, roasted butternut squash, Brussels, and topped with crispy shallot and pancetta that added both savory and texture notes. Dessert was an emotional experience all its own, as the Hazelnut Torta was dripping in Nutella cream and salted caramel gelato with buttery hazelnut toffee chunks sprinkled all about. Enough said. While not included in my recent repertoire, North Italia does have a signature dish. In an exclusive interview I conducted with Fox, he revealed that, while the eatery is best known for its pizza and pastas (with dough and pastas made by hand daily), the braised beef short rib with daily roasted root vegetables and creamy white polenta; and the Burrata Tortelloni with roasted mushroom, Swiss chard, porcini brodo, pecorino and saba are hallmark dishes for the burgeoning brand. As for Fox’s personal favorite menu item, that honor goes to the White Truffle Garlic Bread with house made ricotta, mozzarella, grana Padano, and herbs. Given its explosive growth of late, I asked Fox how North Italia can elevate its image even further. “Every restaurant should tell a story,” he said. “The vision is for North to be more than just an Italian restaurant—it’s more about creating a place, an experience that reflects life. When thinking about our guests and what is important to them in life, our team is able to deliver an authentic sense of food culture and the restaurant becomes a true part of the community.” Quite a salient perspective that clearly comes from well-honed experience. Fox’s come quite a long way from a career that started by packing a punch–literally. I’m told that, upon using his college tuition to open his first restaurant at 20 years-old, Fox was forced to learn how to cook when he got into a fight with his chef, and the chef broke his hand. An oddly fortuitous event considering Fox has since opened 80-plus restaurants throughout his career, with his Fox Restaurant Concepts currently employing nearly 4,000 people across six states—and with plans for continued significant growth in years to come.

DESIGNING THE MOOD with DJ M-Squared Written by Jennifer Gonzales Michael McPherson also known as DJ M-Squared, is raising the bar and setting new limits in the DJing industry. In 2010, he was honorably announced as America’s number one DJ by winning the Red Bull Thre3style USA Championship and was the first DJ to win the coveted title. Millions of people have seen him perform on TV hit series “Master of the Mix,” which included high-profile judges like Amber Rose, Vikter Duplaix, and Legendary DJ Kid Capri. He has performed in popular cities such as, Las Vegas, Miami, Dubai, Los Angeles, New York City, and Paris just to name a few and has traveled along-side with superstar Kelly Rowland as her official DJ. That’s not all, he is also the first and only DJ ever to headline NBC/Universal’s massive New Year’s Eve Bash “Eve” for five consecutive years in a row, from 2013-2017. His clients include, fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger, NBA Superstar Lebron James, NBC/Universal, The Grammy’s, iHeart Radio, and many more. DJ M-Squared’s live performances are breath-taking, he

is an expert at setting the mood with his turn tables and has such strong capability of connecting with the crowd through his mixes. Q: How long have you been DJing for? I have been DJing professionally now for 15 years, and what’s funny is when I first started out I use to listen to the radio and I would try and create these mixes on my own using a dual cassette deck. This was the only thing I had at the time, until I was able to afford my first turntable. Q: Where have you performed? I’ve performed all over, I’ve performed in Miami, West Palm Beach, Las Vegas, Paris, Orlando, Universal Studios, Disney World, I’ve been to Dubai, and New York. I’ve performed at events for Tommy Hilfiger, Banana Republic and Armani. I also perform at other places such as, NBA All-Star Weekend, NFL Super Bowl Weekend, and Fashion Week. www.HighRiseLife.com

Q: In Downtown Orlando, there is a mural painting of you DJing, could you give us more insight on that? In 2014, I was voted best Red Bull DJ and was awarded this mural painting of me DJing, by artist Andrew Spear. Q: It must have been an honor to be announced America’s number one DJ, how did that come about? Every year, they hold a Red Bull Thre3style Battle, there is two rounds you must win before you go to the final competition which was held in Denver. The judges of the competition were legendary DJ Jazzy Jeff and Questlove. It was then that I won USA number one DJ, which landed me in Paris to represent the USA in the world showcase. Right after that, when everything was finished, I received a call and was told that Kelly Rowland was interested in having me as her DJ while she toured. Everything was happening so fast, but it was a great experience overall. Q: After hearing about your accomplishments, did you ever see yourself being where you are today? Q: When and where was your very first big performance and how did it make you feel? My first big performance was in 2002, it was for a Greek Fraternity and Sorority event. DJ Scoobz was performing that night and he had given me an opportunity to open for him. This was huge for me considering that DJ Scoobz is one of the biggest DJs in South Florida and he even told me up front, if you suck I’m going to have to kick you off stage. So, the pressure was on, and I was nervous, there were a lot of people there, but everyone loved me, and the crowd was going crazy, so everything turned out great.

May 2018

Yes, I’ve always been the kind of person that if I set my mind to do something— I do it. No matter how hard it is, or what I had to do to get there— I do it. I also believe that it is important to remain humble and remember to give back. I make time and effort to be a guest speaker at the Boys and Girls Club, or career day at school. Q: What’s Next? Right now, I’m working on a Single called “Troll” we’re expecting it to come out within the next month or so. It’s going to be featuring Anonomis who’s performed with KRS- One, and Natural Phil who is the drummer. Together we are the mood designers, a live DJ/Drummer show.

Jason Mraz to Headline Annual INSPIRE Concert May 18th All Proceeds Benefit the Sands Cares Accelerator Program Las Vegas Sands Welcomes Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth as an Accelerator Member, Joining Inspiring Children Foundation as Concert Beneficiaries LAS VEGAS, March 19, 2018 – Las Vegas Sands Corp. (NYSE: LVS) is hosting Grammy award-winning artist Jason Mraz for a charity concert celebration at The Venetian Theatre on May 18 as part of the second annual INSPIRE event presented by Sands Cares, with all proceeds from ticket sales benefiting Sands Cares Accelerator Program Members. Las Vegas Sands also announced that Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth (NPHY) has become the second nonprofit organization invited into the Accelerator Program, joining the Inspiring Children Foundation (ICF). The two at-risk youth organizations will be beneficiaries of INSPIRE, which is being underwritten by Sands Cares to help Accelerator Program members increase their impact on the local community. Headlining the benefit concert, Mraz has quietly amassed a diverse and avid fan base throughout the world. Since getting his start in San Diego coffee houses, he’s brought his positive message and soulful, folk-pop sound

to rapt audiences through his vibrant recordings, humorous live performances, and philanthropic efforts. Along the way, Mraz has earned numerous platinum certifications and made pop history with his record-breaking classic single, “I’m Yours.” His single “I Won’t Give Up,” won two Grammy Awards, as well as the prestigious Songwriter Hall of Fame Hal David Award. A dedicated artist and gentleman farmer, Mraz is a committed global citizen through impassioned social activism and philanthropic efforts that span from environmental advocacy to ardent support for human rights. INSPIRE is the signature fund-raising event for the Sands Cares Accelerator Program, a community partnership in which Las Vegas Sands makes a longer-term investment in promising nonprofit organizations that have the potential to expand service and grow with the resources of a committed corporate catalyst. Accelerator members enter the program for three years and receive funding, in-kind www.HighRiseLife.com

services, mentoring, volunteer support and other opportunities, such as proceeds from INSPIRE. The company created the Sands Cares Accelerator Program to build on the entrepreneurial and philanthropic legacy of founder, chairman and CEO Sheldon G. Adelson. “We hope that joining ICF in the Accelerator program will have a great impact on NPHY’s ability to address Southern Nevada’s significant youth homelessness problem,” said Ron Reese, senior vice president of global communications and corporate affairs at Las Vegas Sands. “Our two Accelerator members complement each other very well, in terms of putting at-risk youth on a positive trajectory. If you care about helping our community’s most vulnerable young people, INSPIRE is the place to be on May 18.” NPHY has provided Southern Nevada’s homeless youth with help, hope and opportunities to rebuild their lives, guiding them toward a path of self-sufficiency with access to a range of services, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Through outreach, emergency shelter, independent living, and other programs to assist their transition out of homelessness, the organization meets the needs of homeless youth at various stages in their journeys. “Becoming an Accelerator member and being part of INSPIRE is a game changer for NPHY and a tremendous opportunity to raise our community’s awareness about the significant youth homelessness problem in Las Vegas and Clark County,” said Arash Ghafoori, executive director of NPHY. “As Sands is helping us catalyze a movement to end youth homelessness in Southern Nevada, we hope that through our efforts more people will realize that youth homelessness is one of our region’s biggest problems, and that our youth deserve the commitment of the collective community to find real solutions.” Las Vegas/Clark County has the nation’s third largest unaccompanied homeless youth population among major U.S. metropolitan areas, with more than 90 percent living unsheltered – the second highest rate in the nation. NPHY focuses on keeping youth in school, starting them in the workforce and working toward independent living. Like NPHY, ICF assists at-risk youth with its unique focus on building life skills and providing leadership development to help them achieve beyond their previously limited beliefs for the potential of their lives. ICF has mastered a 95-percent rate of college scholarships for youth in the organization’s full-time leadership program, with many entering prestigious universities.

Real Estate MarketTrends MORTGAGE RATES CONTINUE TO CLIMB… POPULATION IS BECOMING MORE DIVERSE… WE ARE WITNESSING HISTORICAL CHANGES Written by Yelena Brezhneva In the past 3 years we have witnessed quite steady increase in prices. Las Vegas March prices kept blooming. Home & condo prices grew faster than last year. Spring is in the air and we are finally enjoying the sun & good sales. The median price of local condominiums and townhomes sold in March was $160k, up by 30.1% compared to last year this time. We are still dealing with shortage of inventory, with only a 2-month supply. With that in mind, when you find a house that you like, make sure to put an offer right away and make sure it's a good one. Otherwise you'll regret losing that lovely home that could be yours, as multiple offers are still competing for a property in the market of $250k and less price range. We are back in the healthy real estate market and distressed sales are now a scarcity. 25% of all sales in March were cash sales and that's less than in March of last year. In February 2013 cash sales peaked to 59.5%, that's when investors played a big role in the market, but not anymore. If you are looking for short sales and foreclosures, then you need to know that only 2.9% of all home sales n March were

in this category. March of last year that number was around 10%. Here again we can see how market is become more traditional. Altogether total value of real estate transactions by end of March was $1 billion, that's 14.9% higher than last year and $126 million for condos & townhomes, that's 33.5% higher than last year.

Total Sales in March:

Homes, Condos, Townhomes – 3,886

Available Inventory by the end of March was 30.1% less than last year this time: Single Family Home - 3,835 Condos & Townhomes - 761

CALIFORNIA California prices also blossomed this Spring, jumping in March reaching an eight-month high, according to the CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® (C.A.R.) March’s statewide median home price was $564,830, up 8.1 percent from February and 8.9 percent from March 2017. In Bay Area prices increased 18.1% compare to last year. That jump was consistent in six out of nine counties where growth was more than 10%.

of nine counties posting sales increases and the median price surging by double-digits in seven of nine counties,” said C.A.R. President Steve White. “On the other hand, sales in the Southern California region have cooled for the past five months, even in the more affordable Riverside and San Bernardino areas.” South California market continues experiencing decline in sales of 6.4%., especially in San Diego by 10,4% and Los Angeles counties by 7.6%.

Alameda, Marin, San Mateo, Santa Clara, San Diego, and Orange counties all hit a new peak price at $955,000, $1,392,500, $1,615,000, $1,454,500, $625,400, and $824,450, respectively.

California is also experiencing inventory shortage especially in the market of $200k and under. However, in the luxury market of $2 million and above they have increased by 33%.

The housing market performed solidly throughout the state in March, especially in the San Francisco Bay Area, which led the way with six
