Course Descriptions: Business Administration

“Once students enter the Phillips School of Business, they begin the journey from business student to business professional. As the Director and Professor of Business Communications, I have the privilege of working with sophomore business students to develop professional writing and presentation skills and explore future career options. Students leave this course with a professional resume, cover letter, LinkedIn profile, and a plan for further development of hard and soft skills. Nothing is more satisfying than watching a student gain the tools and confidence they need to search for and succeed in that dream internship or job!”

BUA 1050. Practical Excel for Business. This is an introductory Excel course that focuses on foundational Excel functions and processes to prepare business majors for upcoming courses. Students will get an opportunity to earn the Excel Associate Certification. For B.S.B.A. majors only. Course is graded Pass/Fail. One credit.

BUA 1100. Introduction to Excel. This is an introductory Excel course that focuses on foundational Excel functions and processes. Pass/fail. Two credits.

BUA 1300. Business Fellows Colloquium. This course provides Business Fellows with an introduction to the

program, the University and their community. Through exercises, guest speakers, and experiential activities, Business Fellows will identify and develop personal, professional, and academic goals, connect with mentors and on-campus organizations, and develop a better understanding of the broader High Point community. Business Fellows will practice skills that will aid them in distinguishing themselves on the job market, and in admissions to graduate/professional programs. Course is graded Pass/Fail. One credit.

BUA 2000. Business Career Boot Camp. This is an intensive eight-week course designed to introduce students to the foundations of business while providing the tools needed for career exploration. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing or permission of instructor. For B.S.B.A. majors only. One credit.

BUA 2100. Excel-Based Business Analysis. This is an Excel course that focuses on business analysis. Introductory and advanced Excel functions are utilized. Presentation of data and use of data to solve business problems is emphasized. Prerequisites: BUA 1100 or permission of instructor. Two credits.

BUA 2990. Business Communications and Professional Development. Emphasizes the fundamentals of communication and professionalism that are essential for success in business. Classroom instruction and practice will include written, oral, and interpersonal/group communication with an emphasis on professionalism and presentation skills. For B.S.B.A. majors only.

Prerequisite: Sophomore standing, BUA 2000. Four credits.

BUA 2991. International Business Communication. A course designed to enhance skills in international business communication. Students will be introduced to a theoretical model for analysis of cultural variables which affect international business/professional interaction. Prerequisites: Sophomore standing and declared international business major; or sophomore standing and permission of instructor. One credit.

“HPU business students will be competing in a global job market. My goal is to inspire them to reach for incredible opportunities and to teach how to acquire them. I enjoy seeing students’ confidence and abilities grow as I help develop strong written and verbal communication skills while coaching how to deliver an engaging presentation.

With experience in sales and marketing, as well as serving as a Career Advisor at HPU, I know the importance of communicating clearly and concisely to make an impact with correct grammar, word choice, and tone. I emphasize developing the soft skills in business essential for success. My mission is to empower students with skills and tools to achieve their goals."

BUA 3000. Developing Your Business Career Plan. This is an intensive eight-week course designed to prepare juniors or seniors to conduct a successful internship or job search. Prerequisite: Junior standing. For B.S.B.A. majors only. Pass/Fail. One credit.

BUA 3050. Business Law. This course is a study of U.S. law regarding business. The course will cover topics such as the American legal and regulatory system, contracts, torts, product liability, forms of business ownership, international commercial dispute resolutions process, EEOC, affirmative action, performance appraisal, and discrimination in the workplace. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing or permission of the instructor. Four credits.

“The world of work is changing rapidly. My goal is to arm HPU business students with the tools needed to find meaningful careers. Technology, the “gig” economy, and new hiring processes all demand business communication and career savvy. In my career courses, students learn to express their career interests and unique value propositions to networking contacts and prospective employers. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential in this process. I emphasize “personal best” and improvement at all times, empowering students and building confidence.

My background in career services includes eight years working with undergraduate and graduate students at two universities. Six of those years were spent at HPU, four serving as Director of Career and Professional Development. I encourage impeccable grammar, punctuation, and etiquette in writing, even in the simplest of correspondence. These habits can be huge differentiating factors for employers in hiring decisions.”

BUA/GBS 3100. Global Business. This study-abroad course is an introduction to globalization and its effects on business operations around the world focusing on the varied economic, political, and legal environments in different countries. Emphasis is on identifying the unique business risks, challenges, and opportunities that companies face while competing in a global marketplace. Four credits. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing, or permission from instructor. Four credits. [EXPLN]

BUA/GBS 3110. Global Luxury Management. This study-abroad course explores key theories, developments, and tensions in the global luxury market. This course takes a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the strategies and operations of global luxury brands. Students will develop an understanding of the various ways luxury goods and services create value for consumers in multiple cultural contexts and the challenges faced by luxury brands in the current dynamic global environment.
