1 Why are we talking about this?
Whether the word “astrology” makes you want to roll your eyes or makes you starry-eyed, its influence is growing, especially amongst younger people.
Class activity (30 secs)
Take a quick poll: How many of you in the class believe in astrology? Challenge (30 secs) If you have time, why not revisit this question at the end?
Defined as “the practice of observing the movements of celestial bodies and believing their positions can have an influence on human lives”, astrology has been around for over 5,000 years.
Of or from the sky or outside this world. An example of a celestial body is the Moon.
And its influence has far from faded. Recent research shows that in the USA, 80% of young Americans believe in astrology.
On TikTok, the astrology hashtag has millions of videos, with new content added all the time.
Here in the UK, the Astrological Association has a digital magazine specifically aimed at younger readers.
Given its growing popularity and usage for guidance, your vote this week is on:
“Should astrology be used to help us make decisions?”
Perhaps the most mainstream aspect of astrology is horoscopes.
Horoscopes are a description of what is going to happen to you based on the position of the stars and planets when you were born (your star sign). They describe how you might feel, what kind of day you might have, or things to look out for.
Not familiar with your star sign?
Head to the next slide and look for the star sign that corresponds to your birthday. Keep it in mind for the next activity.

Fun is your main focus. You might be full of creative inspiration and have the courage to start that TikTok account or share some of your personal hobbies and talents with the world... Your manifestation abilities also get a boost, so take a risk and go after who and what you desire!
Manifestation:
The act of using methods such as picturing something in your mind and repeating positive phrases to help you imagine achieving something you want, in the belief that doing this will make it more likely to happen.

A good opportunity may arrive this month, pushing you to be a leader or at least responsible for something important. It’s a wonderful opportunity, and you’re going to appreciate it. However, leaders make decisions and stick to them, so embrace that. Good luck, you’ve got this!

The last activity was a bit of fun, but there is a more serious side to astrology too.
In some cases, people use it to inform important life decisions. This is despite the fact that if you ask most scientists, they will say that the conclusions we draw from astrology have no scientific basis.
Before we vote on, “Should astrology be used to help us make decisions?”, let’s take a look at some of the choices astrology is helping young people to make.
Stand in a line. As you see each example appear, move around the room to show how much astrology should be used to make this decision.
How aligned are you as a class?

Which of the opinions do you align with? Quietly reflect before you vote. We need to take more ownership of our decisions, not less.
Most people probably don’t use it for lifechanging decisions. Day-to-day choices are fine.
The world is a challenging place right now. It makes sense we’d look elsewhere for guidance.

There is not much difference between using astrology or faith to make decisions. I don’t see the difference.
Astrology can be used as a free pass to not give someone or something a chance. That seems a shame.
It is a mistake to base important choices on something that is pretty random.
