Today’s VoteTopic:

Do we view the term “refugee” positively?

UNCRC Article 22: Refugee children UN SDG 10: Reduced inequalities

VfS Key Theme 1: Global issues & politics

1 Why are we talking about this?

Refugee Week is celebrated between 16th-22nd June. The movements of people around the globe is always a talking point. The public, the politicians and the press all have something to say. The language used in these discussions is very important. Today, we will be checking our own understanding so we can be more informed about this topic.

This week you’ll be voting Yes or No to: “Do we view the term ‘refugee’ positively?”

2 Finding the right words

Around the world, people may need to flee their homes. People may flee due to persecution, conflict or human rights abuses. Different terms are used to describe people who are on the move or have left their countries.

Pair discussion (5-8 mins)

Let’s consider the definitions of different terms for people who have needed to flee. With your partner, discuss whether you feel the public is aware of these definitions.

2 Finding the right words

An asylum-seeker is someone who is seeking international protection. Their request for refugee status has yet to be processed.

Do you feel the public is aware of the meaning of the term asylum-seeker?

2 Finding the right words

Refugees are people forced to leave their own country and seek safety somewhere else. This might be because of who they are, what they believe, or because there is a risk of war or violence.

Do you feel the public is aware of the meaning of the term refugee?

2 Finding the right words

Internally displaced people have been forced to flee their homes by conflict, violence, persecution or disasters. These people are still within the borders of their own country.

Do you feel the public is aware of the meaning of the term internally displaced people?

2 Finding the right words

Migrants are people staying outside of their country of origin, they are not asylum-seekers or refugees. Some migrants leave their country because they want to work, study, join family or live abroad. Others feel they must leave because of poverty, political unrest, gang violence, natural disasters or other reasons.

Do you feel the public is aware of the meaning of the term migrant?

2 Finding the right words

Individual reflection (1 min) How important is it for people to know the differences between these terms?

Pair discussion (4-5 mins)

We started today’s lesson saying that the words people use to describe other people matters. The public, the politicians and the press are all having conversations. But, are people having accurate conversations, or is it all talk?

On the following slides, consider the conversations being held. With your partner, discuss whether the term refugee is being used positively.

There are too many refugees coming to Britain.

Do you mean too many refugees? Asylum-seekers? Or too many migrants?

Is the term refugee being used positively here?

The public seem to be okay with refugees being welcomed to the UK. They are not so sure about migrants.

We often celebrate the contributions of refugees coming to Britain. Many celebrities were refugees.

Is the term refugee being used positively here?

Refugees must leave their lives behind to find safety. Not many of us can understand what that is like.

People in need should be able to apply to live here, but I don’t agree with the small boats.

Is the term refugee being used positively here?

Now’s your chance to vote on: “Do we view the term ‘refugee’ positively?”

Yes

You have to overcome a lot of pain when you are a refugee. Every refugee deserves respect.

Refugees are in need of help, they have been forced to flee their homes. It’s important to help them.

Refugees around the world have used their experiences to help others.

Refugees have gone through horrific ordeals. I feel sadness when I hear the word refugee.

Too often people are talking discriminatorily about “refugees”. It’s rare to hear positive messaging on this.

Refugees and migrants get mixed up in people’s minds. This is clouding people’s judgement.

No

We will be sharing your thoughts on this topic with Refugee Council, UNICEF UK, Save the Children, British Red Cross and British Futures.
