THIS WEEK’S BIG READ: GOING THROUGH A PHASE
In the UK, most people use the solar calendar, which is based on the time it takes the Earth to orbit the Sunabout 365 days. This year is divided into 12 months, each with 28 to 31 days, which can get a bit confusing In contrast, a lunar calendar works differently...
Lunar calendars (used in Islam) track time by following the Moon’s phases. A lunar month is the time it takes the Moon to go from new moon to full moon and back again, which is about 29.5 days. As a result, a lunar year is shorter than a solar year, so lunar months gradually shift through the seasons over time.

COMPREHENSION CHALLENGE
Which kind of calendar is commonly used in the UK? What is a solar calendar based on? Which religion uses a lunar calendar? How does a lunar calendar track time? How is a lunar year different from a solar year?
