Could pre-loved clothes become more popular than buying new?

1 Why are we talking about this?

Fashion has taken centre stage at the 40th London Fashion Week. It was held between Friday 13 th and Tuesday 17th September.

1 Why are we talking about this?

This year’s event opened with the eBay Endless Runway, where iconic pre-loved styles were shown off on the catwalk.

Pre-loved fashion also took centre stage as Vinted collaborated with Oxfam for the Style for Change Runway event. This comes after Vinted made a profit for the first time as pre-loved becomes more popular.

1

Why are we talking about this?

So, could pre-loved clothes become more popular than buying new?

You’ll be voting Yes or No on this VoteTopic question at the end of the lesson. And yet, Britain throws away more clothes than any other country in Europe. On average, each person sends around 35 items per year to general waste, rather than selling or donating to charity.

2 Back in fashion

Whether it’s through an online platform, a charity shop or a high street vintage store, more of us are buying pre-loved fashion.

2 Back in fashion

Pair discussion (4-5 mins)

Let’s explore some of our feelings around pre-loved fashion. You are about to read a series of choices. Share with your partner which of the two options you would rather do. One minute on each.

2 Back in fashion

Get some new trainers with that boxfresh smell.

Get some trainers still in the box but with a scuff mark on the toe for half the price.

2 Back in fashion

Buy a new outfit for a fancy dress party that you'll give to the charity shop straight after.

Buy an outfit for a fancy dress party from the charity shop.

Head to the

high

street and buy something from the latest season.

“Borrow” something from your older sibling’s or parent’s cupboard.

Get out and buy some new denim that has been ripped just right. Buy some vintage denim with legit wear and tear.

3 Pre-loved Island

Headlines were made back in 2022 as Love Island ditched fast fashion sponsors and instead coupled up with eBay. Contestants have been wearing some pre-loved items on the show since.

Love Island and eBay have renewed their deal as there has been a boost in preloved clothing sales.

3 Pre-loved Island

Whole class activity (4-6 mins) Voters, take a read of some headlines that are linked to eBay’s sponsorship of Love Island. Respond with a gesture for your feelings on the news.

3 Pre-loved Island

You’ll shortly be voting on today’s VoteTopic question: “Could preloved clothes become more popular than buying new?”

Let’s focus on a particular word here: popular. Popular: Liked, enjoyed, or supported by many people.

Now’s

your

chance to vote on: “Could pre-loved clothes become more popular than buying new?”

Yes

If you want to show off your eco credentials, you’ll be into pre-loved.

You can get some really expensive pieces in vintage and charity shops that you wouldn’t be able to afford otherwise.

If skinny jeans are the next big thing, adults have been donating them to charity shops for years.

The power of fast fashion is that it's cheap. It’s bad for lots of people, but good for our wallets.

I just feel funny about it, it’s a personal choice. I want to be wearing new.

Once we’re all trying to get those hidden gems, there will not be enough to go around.

No

We will be sharing your thoughts on this topic with Shein, Friends of the Earth, Oxfam, Vinted and The Climate Coalition.
