TPS: What does the article suggest about the importance of understanding what you need to do?
Do you have a big project you’re afraid of completing? What’s the process of fully understanding the task at hand?
Immediate Action by Thibaut Meurisse says we tend to procrastinate when we don’t fully understand the task we need to complete. The best solution to this problem is to take time to understand every detail of the task.
Make Sure You Fully Understand the Task at Hand
When we’re undecided as to how we should approach a task, unsure of what the final outcome should be, or unclear about the ultimate purpose of the task, we find it difficult to make progress. Even a lack of urgency about the project can undermine our ability to get to work.
How else can you check your understanding of a task or topic?
One solution to inadequately understanding the task on your to-do list is to take the time to examine the specifics of the task. Meurisse writes that when you don’t fully understand what you need to do, why the task is important, or how you can best approach it, it’s worthwhile to sit down and figure out the answers to those questions. You might make your goal more specific and measurable, ask yourself why it’s important to complete the task, or even ask someone else how they would tackle the task.

Is ghosting easier for everyone?
1 Why are we talking about this?
Pair discussion (1-2 mins)
What does ghosting mean to you?
1 Why are we talking about this?
Have you experienced being ghosted?
Have you been a “ghoster”?
Ghosting has become a well-known part of our lives and its effects on young people are being examined.
Let’s explore this phenomenon as we work towards our vote on: “Is ghosting easier for everyone?”
Ghosting:
A way of ending a relationship with someone suddenly by stopping all communication with them.
2 Dampening spirits
Recently, researchers from the University of Brighton and the University of Coimbra in Portugal have revealed the impact ghosting behaviour has been having on young people.
The researchers identified two spoo-key reasons that someone may choose to ghost.
Pair activity (4-6 mins)
Consider the two upcoming reasons people may decide to ghost. With your partner, describe a scenario where this reason may be responsible for the ghosting.
2 Dampening spirits
With your partner, describe a scenario where someone hoping to avoid conflict has decided to ghost. (2-3 mins)
2 Dampening spirits
With your partner, describe a scenario where someone ghosts to give themselves a sense of self-protection. (2-3 mins)
3 What ghost around, comes around
Today you will be voting Yes or No to: “Is ghosting easier for everyone?”
There are painful feelings involved for those who are ghosted. A study has found that those who ghost others also suffer from the experience.
So is everyone worse off from ghosting? Or, does ghosting save us from having to say things we would rather not? Let’s think a little more about how ghosting affects people differently.
3 What ghost around, comes around
Class discussion (4-6 mins)
Take a look at some examples where someone is being ghosted. As we prepare to vote, share your thoughts with the class about whether you think everyone in the example is better off for the ghosting.
3 What ghost around, comes around
I’ve been blocked from the Discord. I’ll never be able to game with the group again. Why was I removed? I don’t get it.
Is everyone here better off for the ghosting?
They were holding us back. They would never have accepted that they were just not good enough. None of us wanted to say it either.
3 What ghost around, comes around
I’m still waiting to hear about the apprenticeship. I spent ages on the presentation, met the team in person… I thought it went well.
Is everyone here better off for the ghosting?
Yeah, I’m not spending my time doing that.
They’ll work it out.
So many people applied for the role! I’m sure we’ve picked the right person. I’ll call and give the good news. What about the unsuccessful ones…?
3 What ghost around, comes around
We’ve been talking for months, things were going really well. The blue messages went green, so I know I’ve been blocked.
Is everyone here better off for the ghosting?
It feels harsh, but I didn’t know how to say I’m just not that into you. At least this way I don’t need to tell her why.
Yes
Now’s your chance to vote on: “Is ghosting easier for everyone?”
Talk through some hard truths, or just let a relationship go?
Ghosting is easier all round and saves everyone’s feelings.
Ghosting might be the best way to get out of difficult situationships. Some people do not want to hear no.
Sometimes people drop into your DMs, best not to waste anyone’s time by engaging in chat.
It’s obvious that the person being ghosted is worse off. They feel bad and don’t know if there’s something wrong with them.
People who ghost end up feeling bad about themselves too. It doesn’t feel great all round.
Short of blocking someone, ghosting is all you can do sometimes. Ghosting is a less than ideal choice.
No
