WOTW: Infer
TPS: Why do we do Word of the Week?
Having a large vocabulary is not just a skill in reading, writing, listening and speaking, but also in a general knowledge of science, history and the arts. It makes you a more interesting human!
WOTW: Infer
Using your MWBs: What do you think this word means?
3…2…1… Show me.
1. Deduce or conclude (something) from evidence and reasoning rather than from explicit statements.
Using your MWBs: What type of word is it? Noun/verb/adjective/adverbetc.
3…2…1… Show me.
2. Verb
WOTW: Infer
TPS: Synonyms and antonyms (what are these?):
Synonyms – words with a similar meaning
Antonyms – words with the opposite meaning
Using your MWBs: What synonyms can you think of?
3…2…1… Show me.
Deduce, reason, scrutinise, work out
Using your MWBs: What antonyms can you think of?
3…2…1… Show me.
Mistrust, doubt, disbelieve
But what is inference?
Simply put, it’s reading between
the lines
Most texts are made of what’s happening on the surface And what’s going on underneath the surface
The underneath is often called the
subtext
Think about what you know about the prefix sub
submarine subway submerge
Sub means under or beneath
So, inference is reading between the lines, looking at what going on below the surface of the text
And as readers when we do this we infer (the verb)
However, writer’s don’t infer, they imply (also a verb)
I’m inferring I’m implying
So, our job as readers is to work out what a writer is saying beneath what they are telling us on the surface of their texts.
Read the sentence below, what can you infer from it?
He walked slowly through the cold grey rain wearing his grey raincoat.
A man is walking slowly. It’s raining. He’s wearing a grey coat.
The adverb slowly, the weather and the colour grey all suggest he’s miserable
What about this sentence?
He walked briskly through the summer sunshine wearing his yellow shirt.
How has the subtext (what we infer) changed?
The adverb briskly, the sunny weather and the colour yellow all make this man much happier!
WOTW: Infer
TPS 1: Why is increasing our vocabulary important?
Speaking frame: Increasing our vocabulary is important because…
TPS 2: Where might we see the word infer in life?
Speaking frame: We might see the word infer…

Could a year of culture improve where you live?
1 Why are we talking about this?
Bradford is now the UK’s City of Culture. This gives a great chance to appreciate Bradford, its people and the types of artistic expression that are linked to the city. Culture can be defined in different ways:
Culture:
The way of life, especially the general customs and beliefs, of a particular group of people at a particular time.
Culture:
Music, art, theatre, literature, etc.
1 Why are we talking about this?
Bradford’s time as the UK City of Culture will feature performances, exhibitions, events and activities inspired by the city’s historic centre and the countryside that surrounds it.
It is a celebration of, and for, the people who call Bradford home.
Did you know?
Musician Zayn Malik and artist David Hockney are from Bradford.
1 Why are we talking about this?
Let’s hear a little more about Bradford’s year ahead and consider whether a year of culture could improve where you live .
Class activity (4-5 mins)
Let’s take a look at some of the events taking place in Bradford throughout 2025. If you would like to get involved, do a dance. If you wouldn’t like to get involved, strike a pose and stand still!

3 Artistic expression
Individual activity (4-5 mins)
Over the next few slides, you will read about some ways that research has found art to affect our health and wellbeing. Show a thumbs up if art does have this effect on you. Show a thumbs down if art doesn’t have this effect on you. Make a quick decision for each idea, trust your instincts!

4 Art and culture in your community
Today, we have been looking at Bradford and considering some of the good that can come from having more art and culture in our communities. Soon you will be linking this to your life, and voting Yes or No to: “Could a year of culture improve where you live?”
Pair discussion (2-4 mins)
Take a read of some opinions based on this VoteTopic. Discuss with your partner whether you agree or disagree with the opinions.
4 Art and culture in your community
Having new art and culture to experience is a great thing. People can learn a lot from the diversity art has to offer. Wouldn’t it be great if everyone has watched an opera or experienced a flash dance mob!
Not everyone is interested in arts and culture. Even if you get interested, you might not be able to get involved or visit more because of the cost. Things like dance lessons can be very expensive.
Places holding arts and cultural events get investment to improve the facilities and buildings. Visitors come to see these events and spend money in the local economy in shops and restaurants. It’s a win for the area and for jobs.
Arts funding is being cut because of the cost-of-living crisis. The NHS and schools need the money more.

Now’s your chance to vote on: “Could a year of culture improve where you live?”
Yes
Having new art and culture to experience is a great thing. People can learn a lot from the diversity.
Investment is made to hold these events and people bring in money when they come to visit. It’s good news.
A year of culture would shine a spotlight on the great things that are already in our community.
It’s got to make a change for the longer term or it’s not worth it for one sparkly year.
Not everyone is interested in arts and culture. Even if you get interested, the hobbies might be too expensive for you.
Arts funding is being cut because of the cost of living crisis. The NHS and schools need the money more.
No
