Your latest results: “Was false information to blame for the summer riots?”

I wanted to thank each of the 23,291 young people for taking part in last week’s vote! Your votes and comments are really interesting and help the police to understand what you feel about what happened this summer.

Looking at the results from last week, it’s interesting to see that over half you of you believe that false information is to blame for the summer riots - I agree. However, what makes me happy is that the majority of you are proud of your communities, we need this attitude to build safer and stronger communities that can combat the hatred that we felt and saw this summer. The police are continuing to work hard to build trust in communities, come forward to report hate crimes and worrying behaviour.

Should autoplay be switched off?

1 Why are we talking about this?

This week, you are going to be exploring the power of autoplay.

It’s likely most of us haven’t ever really given autoplay a second thought . That in itself might be part of the issue…

1 Why are we talking about this?

For many, it is a useful feature of streaming services like YouTube, iPlayer, and Netflix because it literally means we don’t have to lift a finger. However, as well as making us more likely to binge on shows and videos, there are some concerns that autoplay might be contributing to some of the harmful things we see online.

1 Why are we talking about this?

This month, YouTube has announced it will make changes to limit recommendations of certain health and fitness videos to teenagers. It is hoped this will reduce harms, by reducing repeated watching of videos which “idealise” certain body types.

There are concerns some recommended content could be harmful for mental health, so “Should autoplay be switched off?” You’ll be voting Yes or No to this VoteTopic question at the end of the lesson.

2 Stream of consciousness

So, what’s happening with YouTube and this change to their algorithm?

Adjustments are being made to their systems to change what is up next for teenagers watching videos.

Algorithm:

A set of mathematical instructions or rules that, especially if given to a computer, will help to calculate an answer to a problem.

2 Stream of consciousness

Challenge (30 sec)

Take a moment to reflect on the types of videos you could you imagine being autoplayed after this short news report?

2 Stream of consciousness

You likely have a lot of experience with this topic. You have seen the types of content that start playing after watching a video. You might already have an idea about how to vote today on “Should autoplay be switched off?”

Pair activity (4-6 mins)

Take a read of some example Yes or No comments for today’s VoteTopic. Work with your partner to argue against their point with your own Yes or No comment.

When you vote, you have the opportunity to leave a comment to support your voting choice. Let’s fast-forward and think about some Yes and No comments now.

2 Stream of consciousness

Yes

You get similar things to what you’ve already watched. If you’ve been watching something you probably shouldn’t, you're going to get shown more of it.

Create a No comment to argue against this point about this week’s VoteTopic: “Should autoplay be switched off?”

2 Stream of consciousness

The recommendations really uncover some great content you wouldn’t watch otherwise.

No

Create a Yes comment to argue against this point about this week’s VoteTopic: “Should autoplay be switched off?”

2 Stream of consciousness

Yes

The key here is about these unrealistic beauty ideals and fitness goals that can get unhealthy. If you see this stuff on repeat it can begin to seem normal, when it really isn’t.

Create a No comment to argue against this point about this week’s VoteTopic: “Should autoplay be switched off?”

2 Stream of consciousness

You can already choose to turn off autoplay if you want to. Turning it off for everyone is too extreme.

No

Create a Yes comment to argue against this point about this week’s VoteTopic: “Should autoplay be switched off?”

3 Down the rabbit hole

YouTube is changing some of its autoplay settings so that teenagers do not see repeated content about fitness and videos that "idealise" certain body types.

Whole class activity (4-6

mins)

Take a read of some scenarios involving streaming content and the autoplay function. Is autoplay working for the people involved? Give a thumbs up or down for your choice. Then, if you feel comfortable, share your thoughts with the class.

3 Down the rabbit hole

I was pretty happy after finishing my exercise video. Why am I now being shown a video about dieting?

3 Down the rabbit hole

I logged on for a guided meditation. I can’t believe how good this autoplayed stretching class was though.

3 Down the rabbit hole

I will hit a personal best with every video.

3 Down the rabbit hole

I’m not seeing the results these transformational videos say I should be.

4 You don’t need to lift a finger

TikTok has been testing a new feature called autoscroll since 2023, which is now set to be rolled out to all users. It provides handsfree scrolling, so you don’t have to flick through videos yourself.

Using your thumbs is so last year…

4 You don’t need to lift a finger

Class activity (30 secs)

Take a quick poll: who is already using this TikTok autoscroll feature?

4 You don’t need to lift a finger

You are about to vote on this week’s VoteTopic question: “Should autoplay be switched off?”

Individual

reflection (1-2 mins)

Think about the platforms you have an option to use an autoplay feature, for example, YouTube, BBC iPlayer, Netflix and now TikTok. If all autoplay features were removed, would you watch more or less content? Would this be a good or a bad thing?

Now’s your chance to vote on: “Should autoplay be switched off?”

Yes

You get similar things to what you’ve already watched. If you’ve been watching something you shouldn’t, you’ll likely get more of it.

Autoplay keeps you stuck watching more and more things you’re interested in. Before you know it, you’ve sunk hours into it.

If you see unrealistic beauty ideals and fitness goals on repeat it can begin to seem normal, when it really isn’t.

The recommendations really uncover some great content you wouldn’t watch otherwise.

You can already choose to turn off autoplay if you want to. Turning it off for everyone is too extreme.

I enjoy sitting down and having new content thrown at me. Don’t take this away from me! I don’t want to click and pick the next thing.

No
