Newsletter Message from the head Y11 and 13 assessments appear to be going well. As you may know, senior leaders aim to tour the school at least once a day to ensure that classroom staff are being supported in their work. On many of my ‘sweeps’ at the moment I find myself coming across classes who are hunched over assessments, carefully trying to demonstrate the skills and knowledge that will enable their teacher to reflect an appropriate grade for them. We’ve had a range of meetings with heads of department about these assessments. Mainly we’ve discussed the format and propriety of arrangements, but we’ve also touched along the way on the enormous breadth of the curriculum that our students undertake.

This breadth is what excites me. A couple of sixth formers found me peering the other day into a sixth form classroom (I don’t always like to disturb the lesson so will sometimes observe through the door window). The students asked me if I was alright (I suppose I must have been frowning) and I asked them, ‘what do you suppose a beach profile is?’. As luck would have it, they were geographers and explained to me that beach profiles allow coastal scientists to predict how wave conditions etc will affect coastlines. This made me think of the publican in Devon whose business literally fell off the edge of a cliff thanks to the relentless action of the waves over time.

Presumably the pub was built in the days before beach profiling could prevent it.

As you may know, my own area of the curriculum is the arts and on Wednesday evening I stayed late to sit in on some Y11 drama assessments. Like so much Y11 assessment work going on at the moment, the students had clearly invested very heavily in the process. I wrote to the students later that night.

“Dear Year 11 Performers, I want you to know how moved I was by the experience of seeing your performances last night. I was quite surprised by my own emotions on seeing live theatre for the first time in a while. Somebody like me really relies on the arts to make them feel human. A wise person once said, ‘we read to know we are not alone’ and this is how I feel about the arts.

Your work last night reminded me that I am not alone in coming to terms with all that life has to throw at us. I loved the way you delved so skilfully into narratives and brought them to life. I loved the way that you committed to character and had me connect with the character you were playing. I felt so sad for the character in Tissue and then, moments later, I felt a kind of thrilling revulsion of the woman in Two. For me, examinations such as GCSE and A level have always been an added detail. They are tests to allow you to demonstrate what you know to new establishments such as sixth forms, colleges, universities or work . But learning in schools is about far more than examinations. In the performing arts, for example, you are communicating with lonely souls like me and you are reassuring us that with, all our quirks and foibles, we are not alone. You remind us that there is a world of human experience out there, some of it even more strange and various than our own.

Thanks again for making me laugh and cry and ‘feel’ again as we begin to work our way out of this pandemic.

I will never forget your year group, your drama group and your performances last night.

Exams are a necessary part of life. But young people learning about the world around them and their fellow inhabitants… that’s what school is really about.

Newsletter Parents/Carers Update Stakeholder survey Parents/carers should be in receipt of our short electronic survey that has been emailed out today, 30 April. Your views are important to us and we would be very grateful if you could take a few minutes to complete this survey and give your feedback on how you think Highfields is doing. Your responses will help inform our main improvement plan (‘Big 3’) priorities for 2021-22.

A separate student survey will also be produced and emailed all students next week via their Highfields email address.

The surveys are anonymous, but there is the option to leave contact details if you would like a response. Surveys are open until midnight on Sunday 16 May.

Y11 & Y13 update on processes for awarding TAGs in Summer 2021 Year 11 and 13 families and students have been sent a Weduc communication providing full details of the processes for awarding Teacher Assessed Grades in the summer.

Students are currently working hard during this period of additional class-based assessments and taking this opportunity to show their teachers what they know, understand and can do in each of their courses. These assessments will play a very substantial role in helping teachers determine objective, fair and reasonable final grades, so we are delighted with the excellent approach that most students are taking towards them.

Each subject will be providing students with a written summary of the evidence they will be using to make final grade judgements. Students will be asked to check the evidence base documents carefully and sign to confirm they have seen, understand and know what evidence will be used to inform grade judgements. If a student believes there were mitigating circumstances that should be taken into consideration for a piece of assessed evidence they should contact school, providing full details, via exams@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk. The evidence bases and examples of special circumstances have been explained in the communication.

As you are aware we cannot discuss our judgements with any student or parent/carer and to do so could constitute malpractice. We have taken the decision not to share marks from the current assessments either; as with exams in any normal year students need to keep focused on what is ahead. We remain very grateful to students, parents and carers for not asking us for such information.

As ever, the crucial challenge for all of our students is to stick at their learning, and to take the current opportunities to show us what they know, understand and can do. They are nearly there!

Newsletter Reduced canteen service for students at Lumsdale - 6 May Polling Day The Government has confirmed that local elections will go ahead on Thursday 6 May. This means that the Wheeldon Hall at Lumsdale will be out of use for school as it will be used as a Polling Station.

Catering arrangements for students at upper site are affected and food options will be limited.

Students are asked to bring a snack at break as the canteen is unable to offer food during morning break. A reduced menu of hot/cold take away foods will be offered at lunch for years 9-11. Catering arrangements for sixth form students and students in Y7-8 at Starkholmes will be unaffected.

Students will be reminded of the food options available to purchase on 6 May or advised to bring a packed lunch if they prefer. Y9 and Y11 will be served from the coffee bar as per their current staggered lunch times and Y10 will be served from outside Mr O’Reilly’s office.

Free period products in school You may be aware that the government introduced the period product scheme in January 2020 to provide free period products for all learners who need them, as they are a necessity and not a luxury. The scheme was set up to prevent periods being a barrier to education for learners and help reduce the stigma around menstruation.

Highfields School holds a supply of a variety of branded period products available for students. All learners in school are able to access period products if they need them, for example, where students have forgotten their products, cannot afford products or in the case of needing products in an emergency. If a student needs free period products they can access these discretely from either school site reception or via their year team. Alternatively, parents/carers on low income or who are struggling owing to the loss of income due to Coronavirus can contact year managers, in confidence, to obtain a bulk supply.

Newsletter Performing Arts Clubs Performing arts clubs are running during lunchtime and after school from 3.30-4.30pm as we are working towards a summer performance – we need you!

Lower site club will be in the performing arts mobile and upper site club will be in P1. All lunchtime clubs require students to bring lunch or have canteen food at break to allow time in the shortened lunch break.

Sports Clubs The PE department are trialling extra-curricular sports activities in the form of ‘sports pods’ taking place on the following days after school:

Students participating should get changed in the changing rooms at the end of the school day ready to start the session at 3.30pm. Sessions will be a mix for all abilities/genders and run for an hour, finishing at 4.30pm. Activities will be decided on the evening.

Gardening donations If anyone is able to donate any tools, seeds, plants or anything the student gardening club can put to good use it would be much appreciated.

Parents/carers of current year 6 students Welcome to Highfields School!

If you are reading this, then you must already be interested in our school and what we are doing.

All we wanted to say here is don't worry. Over the coming weeks, we are working on how we can best help you smoothly make the move to being a Highfields student. We are thinking through all the issues and concerns you might have - what is the school like? How will I find my way around?

How do I buy the uniform? What will happen with the buses?

We are planning ahead so that we can provide a transition process that is most likely to succeed in an academic year that may continue with year bubbles, limited contact and school cross-over opportunities.

To reassure you, the current year 7 have settled in very well, many coped better with our virtual transition than our normal one. We also want to keep you all as involved as possible to ensure you are fully informed across the whole process.

We are hopeful of inviting students and one parent/carer in to visit us on Friday 2 July for a short length of time at designated times during the day. However, this will be confirmed nearer the time when further announcements are made by the government.

We will keep updating everyone through the school website, but really specific messages will come from Mrs Green. She is the 'Year Manager' for year 7 and your first point of contact. Mrs Green has already emailed some information to parents/carers of our year 6 students via our WEDUC communication system.

If your family haven't received an email from Mrs Green, please email with your name and primary school so she can add you to our communication list (tgreen@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk).

From September, the transition programme will continue with some very focused ‘year 7’ time and activities. The first day of school is a dedicated to year 7 students only - this is Wednesday 1 September.

We will keep in touch to make sure students have the best possible transition experience in this climate. Our priority remains that students feel part of our community and to allay as many worries as possible whilst beginning to outline our expectations. In this way, together we will be able to ensure that every student begins their Highfields journey as smoothly as possible.

Newsletter Y6 Welcome Magazine Our current year 7 students collated information in PHSE lessons on how to welcome year 6 students to Highfields. Our students produced a magazine in their form classes and we have taken relevant sections from them all to pass to your child. Please access via the link below: https://www.highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk/parents/year-six-information/year-6-magazine/ We hope this will give your child a little insight into what it is like at Highfields, from a current year 7 perspective, in advance with them starting with us in September.

Reminder of information previously issued: Year 6 cashless catering system – online form completion by 30 April In order to help us plan effectively for your child starting with us on Wednesday 1 September, we issued the first of several electronic forms that we will be asking year 6 parents/carers to complete and return to us over the coming weeks.

You should be in receipt of the cashless catering system information emailed from Mrs Green – thank you to the parents/carers who have already completed this by the 30 April deadline, for any outstanding please complete and return as soon as possible.

We run the cashless catering system to minimise the amount of money in school. The system allows student accounts to be topped up online through ParentPay or by cheque or cash. The system recognises each individual student and can provide full details of their individual cash balances, records cash spent / received, shows where money is spent, ie on what food and on any specific date and time of day. The system works the same for all students whether they pay or have a free school meal.

Please ensure the cashless catering information is completed and returned as soon as possible. If you have not received an email in connection with this, please contact Mrs Green at Highfields School (tgreen@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk)

Year 6 induction sessions – Friday 2 July 2021 We would like to remind you to keep Friday 2 July free for our induction sessions – we will confirm full details as soon as possible in June after government guidance has been released.

The year 7 Youth Sport Trust ‘Boys Move’ project research has been presented to Youth Sport Trust.

Step into Sport

Our year 9 sports leaders attended their second session of ‘step into sport’ with Mrs Allen and Mrs Turner.

Sports mentoring with Jade Windley

Jade Windley, our athlete mentor, led a Zoom session for a group of year 10 sports leaders on Thursday afternoon with Mrs Allen. Our year 7 ‘active in mind’ group were also included for a one hour session with their tutor Mr Mollyneux.

Girls Leadership project

The FA /Barclays sponsored ‘Girls Leadership’ project webinar for staff took place ready for the live launch of the national project next week.

Voice of Sport group

The April voice of sport meeting took place via Zoom today, 30 April. Thank you to everyone who attended and discussed ideas.

Sport development

Mrs Allen has attended a number of webinars this week to keep up to date with developments – the Sports Leaders UK ‘transition project’ webinar for year 6 students to support students with their transition from primary to secondary school; the Youth Sport Trust ‘summer school’ webinar and the YST webinar on ‘embedding personal development in the PE offer’.

Newsletter Sports Leaders assessments

Sports Leaders internal assessments for years 11 and 12 took place last week.

All students were brilliant in their delivery and Mrs Turner and Mrs Allen were thrilled with the adaptation of students during this Covid challenging year.

Advanced notice: Wednesday 5 May – year 9 girls will have a day of cricket with England Coach, Lydia Greenway, at Darley Dale Cricket Club – students involved have been informed. Full details are available from Mrs Allen.

Careers inspiration and advice from BBC Bitesize Explore BBC Bitesize’s brand new collection of free, online careers resources offering a wealth of inspiration and advice for students.

This new resources offer a rich collection of case studies across a wide range of sectors, linking curriculum subjects and the world of work: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/careers

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential.

The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation.

There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile.

Students can access the programme at home via the website (www.startprofile.com) with the student code they have been issued with – contact Mrs Turner for further details.

Y11 students – Decisionz Magazine Spring 2021 Please follow the link below to the latest Decisionz magazine. This is a free online publication that provides a wealth of advice and guidance for students who will be looking to take on the next step in their lives post year 11. It provides advice about colleges in Derbyshire, how to make applications to college and sixth forms and information about careers.

Newsletter Learn Live - & Free resources Learn Live have a virtual pod within www.myfuture.org.uk (located within the careers and transitions zone). Within their pod there is a live streaming TV screen – they will be streaming careers linked videos from over 300 organisations continually through the platform, as an example the Royal Navy are streaming currently.

Linked to that within the ‘Welcome to the Careers and Transitions zone’ you will see a ‘more videos’ hotspot with over 150 pre-recorded videos that have been recently added from organisations such as KPMG, Barclays, Mental Health charities etc.

Newsletter Live Virtual NHS work experience for allied health careers The Virtual NHS work experience day on 6 June is for students interested in allied health careers such as nursing, midwifery, paramedicine, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, dietetics, radiography, prosthetics and orthotics, speech and language therapy, osteopathy, pharmacy and podiatry. This work experience programme is available to support all aspiring healthcare students as an alternative to in-person NHS work experience during the pandemic.

During the work experience day, students will follow two patients from their initial presentation to recovery. Students will observe the healthcare professionals as they interact with the patients and each other. Students will have an opportunity to ask questions and gain knowledge through teaching.

This will help students to make an informed career decision as well as learn about how healthcare professionals work together as part of a multidisciplinary team. Each work experience day is completely different, and students will be able to build on their knowledge of NHS careers as they see different patient cases and their healthcare professionals work in a variety of settings, such as hospital and community.

Places are £10 a day to cover administrative costs and run the tech on the day. Students will receive certificates as evidence of having participated in the work experience programme. Newsletter Health & Social Care virtual work experience programme Applications are now open for the joined up careers virtual work experience programme ‘Future Talent, Future Heroes’. The health and social care careers programme will include live employer engagement from across partner organisations, shining a spotlight on social care, nursing and allied health professionals.

Year 10 & 11 students - Medicine & Healthcare Summer School The University of Leicester will be hosting a digital two day healthcare summer school for students in years 10 and 11 (14-16 year olds).

The summer school will take place online from Monday 26 July to Tuesday 27 July 2021. Students will need to be available for live sessions taking place on both days with an online optional social event on the Monday evening. This is a free event.

Call out for talented students 16-19 years Renaissance Arts is an Independent Conservatoire, based in Central Leeds, offering three year courses in Dance & Musical Theatre. They accept students from the age of 16 to train with a faculty who have global experience as performers, directors, choreographers, and in casting.

Online Course for Medicine This coming Saturday, 1 May, from 12pm-4pm there's a unique course for all students with an interest in medical careers. The Post Mortem is an interactive recreated Post-Mortem course where students join anatomist to try to establish the cause of death of an individual using a semi-synthetic cadaver. All the medical techniques and tests used to establish cause of death will be explained.

Students can join the live session at 2pm and everything they have seen will be covered in more detail along with a chance to ask any questions about anatomy or applying to medical school. The whole day is designed to provide some great online work experience that all students can use in their applications and interviews to healthcare careers and is suitable to all students from 14-19 with an interest in biology or medical careers.

The event is aimed at years 13, 12, 11, and 10 as well as parents/carers. It will provide your child with all the information they need to make informed decisions about their post-18 options. Autism telephone support helpline A national support telephone helpline has been set up for parents/carers of children with autism.

Daisy Chain offer a telephone service to enable families to access advice, support and resources. The service is open to young people, adults and families of those affected by neurodevelopmental disorders.

The aim is to provide support and services for those who display traits associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), sensory processing differences, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The service is for those pre, during and post diagnosis.

Hurst Farm Heritage Project The Hurst Farm Heritage Project is linked to an estate regeneration project started in September 2017 (financed by the MHCLG funding) culminating in a vision for Hurst Farm being launched in November 2020. Derbyshire Dales District Council, the Hurst Farm community and partners are working together on the project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

In November 2020 their first survey was launched with a great response from local residents and people from the surrounding areas stating they would use the proposed Heritage Trail. Following this feedback, a follow-up second survey has been launched. Newsletter Weduc guide Weduc home / school communication tool Weduc is designed to improve communication between parents/carers and school. The platform allows notifications to be sent directly to mobiles of parents/carers with all messages and communication from school and where parents’ evening appointments can be made. It also allows access to information on your child(ren), eg details of behaviour, student timetables, reports and teachers to name a few, all in one easily accessible, user friendly place.

If you have not yet had the chance to enrol with Weduc, please do so as soon as possible to avoid missing important messages from school. We have sent out email notifications with individual enrolment codes to all parents/carers with details on how to download the Weduc app onto your phone/tablet and how to access the site through the internet. Please contact your child’s year manager if you require a new enrolment message to be sent.

We will be moving to Weduc from 1 April 2021. All communication will then be sent via Weduc and our existing communication system will no longer be operational.

When we need to send you an important alert, the Weduc app will flash up a notice on your phone screen - particularly useful when we have to notify you of emergency school closures, detentions and absences. We strongly recommend that you use this app and enable the notification system to ensure you do not miss any important information communicated home.

If you are unable to operate the Weduc app or access links from the notifications, you will need to log in to the Weduc website to check for messages and click into links.

Making parents’ evening bookings via Weduc If you haven’t already downloaded the Weduc App, you’ll need to do that for making parents’ evening bookings and accessing the parent consultation evening itself. The instructions for downloading the App are given below.

The Weduc App should be intuitive to use.

Once you’ve downloaded the App go to the home page and select "Access resources in the Hub". From there you will see the option for "Parents Evening Login" that will take you to the login page to fill in any details required to then book appointments for parents evening.

It might be that a teacher has already made an appointment for you, in which case you just need to make a note of the time.

On an evening in the sports hall, we are often able to grab a word with you on pastoral basis if you want that. Through the digital platform Heads of Year will be available on the evening, if you’d like to discuss something more broadly with them. You can make a booking with your child’s Head of Year in the normal way.

Weduc FAQs I can’t find my email enrolment how do I access Weduc?

Contact the school office and they will organise for an enrolment email to be sent to you directly.

How can I access Weduc?

You can access Weduc by:  downloading the app onto your smart phone or tablet. You can download it from the App Store or Google Play.  logging in via the Weduc website at: https://app.weduc.co.uk/ It is easy to use the new Weduc tool once you have downloaded it: Weduc via the App  Step 1 - Once downloaded, open the app and click the enrol link at the bottom of the login screen.  Step 2 - You will have been sent a unique enrolment code by letter and message from the school office - please keep this safe as you will need it to set up your account. If you have not received a code, please contact the school office .  Step 3 - Enter your unique enrolment code and follow the in-app, step by step instructions to complete your registration.

Weduc via the website If you don't have access to a smart phone you have the option to use Weduc via their website, please follow the instructions below:  Step 1- On an internet-enabled device type the following enrolment link https://app.weduc.co.uk in your web browser. Click onto ENROL  Step 2 - Enter your unique enrolment code which will have been sent to you by letter and message from the school office. Then click onto NO. I AM A NEW USER  Step 3 - Enter your email address and mobile phone number, then click CONFIRM  Step 4 - On completion of step 3 an activation email will be sent to your registered email address.

Follow the instructions in this email to activate your account and set your password.  Step 5 - Log on to Weduc using your newly created login details.

What do I do if I forget my Weduc password?

There is a link on the log in page (https://app.weduc.co.uk/) that will take you through to a page where you can reset your password.

Why can’t I reply to the emails from Weduc?

If you only get emails from Weduc then you will not be able to reply to them. They are notifications of a message that is waiting for you within Weduc, and you would only be able to reply to it there.

The 'sysadmin@weduc.co.uk' is a Weduc system address and is not monitored.

If you choose to use the Weduc app then you will be able to reply to messages within it.

Newsletter Coronavirus guidance Advice if students/staff display symptoms of coronavirus (Covid-19) If your child develops symptoms of Covid-19, they must not come to school and should remain at home for 10 days from the date when their symptoms appeared. Anyone with symptoms will be eligible for testing and this can be arranged via https://www.nhs.uk/ask-for-a-coronavirus-test or by calling 119.

All other household members who remain well, must stay at home and not leave the house for 10 days. This includes anyone in your ‘Support Bubble’.

Household members should not go to work, school or public areas and exercise should be taken within the home.

If you require help with buying groceries, other shopping or picking up medication, or walking a dog, you should ask friends or family. Alternatively, you can order your shopping online and medication by phone or online.

Household members staying at home for 10 days will greatly reduce the overall amount of infection the household could pass on to others in the community. If you are able, move any vulnerable individuals (such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions) out of your home, to stay with friends or family for the duration of the home isolation period.

Symptoms The most common symptoms of coronavirus (Covid-19) are recent onset of:  a new continuous cough(this is defined as coughing a lot for more than an hour, or have three or more coughing episodes in 24 hours),  a high temperature (above 37.8C),  a loss of, or change in, your normal sense of taste or smell (anosmia) For most people, coronavirus (Covid-19) will be a mild illness.

If you are concerned about your child’s symptoms, or they are worsening you can seek advice from NHS 111 at https://111.nhs.uk/ or by phoning 111.

How to stop Covid-19 spreading There are things you can do to help reduce the risk of you and anyone you live with getting ill with Covid-19 – Do:  wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds  use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available  wash your hands as soon as you get home  cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze  put used tissues in the bin immediately and wash your hands afterwards.

Notifying school of a positive Covid-19 case We required the following key information from parents/carers when notifying school of a positive Covid-19 test:  the date symptoms started  the date the test was taken  the date the result was received  the names of ‘close contacts’ of the student during social times at school and any students they have spent time with as close contacts after school  the number of the bus if the student caught a bus to/from school.

A close contact is:  a person who has had face to face contact within one metre of the individual testing positive  contact within one metre for one minute or longer without face to face contact  someone who has been within 2 metres for more than 15 minutes  a person who has travelled in a small vehicle with the individual testing positive, or near them on a large vehicle or plane.

School then checks lesson seating plans to work out how many close contacts there are from lessons, identifying any students who have sat within 2m of the individual testing positive in any lessons during their contagious time prior to developing symptoms. Individual classrooms are then checked manually to see where the desks are and how much room there is.

Once this information is obtained school contacts Public Health England school helpline who take the details. If there is only one case in a year group and if school are confident we have identified all close contacts we only need to ask those students to stay off school and to self-isolate for 10 days.

School informs the Local Education Authority and the school nursing team.

If there is more than one case in a year group, or there is uncertainty around close contacts, then school receives a call back from East Midlands Public Health. They go through all of the information, contact parents/carers where there are positive cases and review the school’s risk assessment. East Midlands Public Health then give school advice on what steps to take next.

Important points:    

It is really important that parents/carers keep children in their home if they test positive or are asked to self-isolate.

It is key that parents/carers know where their children are and who they are with so close contacts can easily be traced.

Unless there is a really urgent situation (such as urgent first aid) staff need to keep 2m away from students and other staff so they are not classed as close contacts.

It is key to understand that if you are a close contact and take a test, even if the result is negative, you have to self-isolate for the full 10 days.

Public Health provide school with a template latter to send home to all parents/carers and a different letter for parents/carers of close contacts. We take on board all advice that Public Health give us.

Newsletter Work set for students who are self-isolating Whilst isolating, students will be provided with work which we aim to align as closely as possible to our planned curriculum. Lesson resources and a summary of lesson content and instructions will be placed on Show My Homework. So long as they are well, students are expected to access this work and encouraged to follow their usual timetable as closely as possible. However, they should allow for the fact that lesson content might not be on Show My Homework until later in the day, as teachers may amend resources and instructions so that they line up with the lesson taught in school. Work should be submitted as instructed on Show my Homework.

We are aware that students will be deeply upset at missing school. Please contact your child’s year manager if your child is having difficulty accessing work due to lack of suitable technology or is struggling during this time of self-isolation and we will endeavour to help.

A guide is given below as a reminder for students on how to access their school email account, VLE (virtual learning environment) and SMHW (Show My Homework) from the school website. Covid-19 home testing kit result reporting For students who have received home testing kits, please remember to test twice a week (ideally Sundays and Wednesdays), and report the outcome of all tests to NHS Test and Trace and to school through the links provided via recent Weduc email communications.

If a student has a positive test result, they will need to stay home and self-isolate. If the result of the test is unclear (void) they will need to do another test.

Newsletter From 31 March 2021, NHS Test and Trace reintroduced confirmatory PCR testing for positive LFD tests conducted at all assisted testing sites, including schools. This means that all staff and students who get a positive LFD test, whether at home or supervised at school, should get a confirmatory PCR. The PCR test should be booked immediately either online or by calling 119 and should be undertaken within 2 days.

Staff and students who had a positive LFD test result, and their close contacts and other members of their household, should self-isolate immediately in line with NHS Test and Trace guidance and while awaiting the PCR result. If the PCR test is negative, it overrides the LFD test and the staff member or student can return to school, and their close contacts can end their self-isolation.

In January, when the prevalence of the virus in England increased, NHS Test and Trace temporarily paused the requirement to do confirmatory PCR tests for positive LFD tests that were conducted at an assisted testing site. This followed advice from PHE that, when coronavirus (COVID-19) prevalence rates are high, the performance of LFD tests and PCRs are broadly comparable and expected to be indistinguishable when used at test sites, significantly reducing the need for routine confirmatory testing.

PHE and NHS Test and Trace have kept this pause under review. As prevalence of the virus in England is now low, confirmatory PCR testing will also help to minimise the chances of false positives.

Asymptomatic testing information for parents/carers with children at school Undertaking regular, rapid coronavirus (COVID-19) testing helps reduce transmission of the virus.

Parents/carers and other adults in households with children at school or college, who do not have symptoms, can now access regular, rapid coronavirus (COVID-19) testing. This includes childcare and support bubbles.

Tests are fast, easy and completely free. There are different ways for a household, childcare or support bubble to collect their test to take at home, twice-weekly (see link below):  through your employer, if they offer testing to employees  by collecting a home test kit from a local test site – anyone aged 18 or over can collect 2 packs of 7 tests – school cannot supply kits for parents/carers  By ordering a home test kit online – please do not order online if you can access testing through other routes, this frees up home delivery for those who need it most https://www.gov.uk/guidance/rapid-lateral-flow-testing-for-households-and-bubbles-of-schoolpupils-and-staff If you have any queries about the tests, please call 119 (free from mobiles and landlines).
