Main Lift Cylinders (9600)

Removal

Perform this procedure with two or more technicians. Do not attempt this procedure without a suitable hoist or crane and a work platform. Main lift cylinders weigh up to 225 lb. (102kg) each.

1.Locate the truck in an area where the carriage can be elevated above the housing of the lift cylinder.

NOTE: You remove the lift cylinder below the carriage. You need to lift the carriage above the cylinder ho using in order to remove the cylinder. If you do not elevate the bottom of the carriage near the top of the cylinder housing, you cannot remove the cylinder assembly.

2.Remove the tractor cover.

3.Remove the cover from the lift chain/hose pulleys (if present) at the top of the telescopics on the cylinder to be removed.

4.Elevate the carriage approx. 12 in. (300mm).

5.Block and clamp between edge of carriage and baseleg. See “Blocking the Carriage” and Figure2-6 on page2-10

6.Using the emergency lowering valve, lower the carriage onto the supports so the hoses become just slack enough to remove them from the pulleys. See Figure7-87 on page7-70.

7.Close the emergency lowering valve. Turn the key switch OFF and disconnect the battery connector.

8.Remove the hoses from the pulleys.

9.Remove the bolt securing the pulleys.

10.Remove the nut and washer holding the piston to the telescopic.

11.Reinstall the pulleys and hoses.

Section 7.Component Procedures

Main Lift Cylinders (9600)

12.Reconnect the battery connector and turn the key switch ON.

13.Elevate the carriage until the crosstie of the telescopic is approx. 7 in. (180mm) above the main frame crosstie.

14.Place a 4 x 6 in. (100 x 150 mm) hardwood block between the telescopic and main frame crossties.

15. Slowly lower the carriage until the telescopic crosstie rests on the hardwood block. This prevents the carriage and telescopic from lowering.

16.Turn the key switch OFF and disconnect the battery connector.

17.Wrap a chain around the telescopic and main frame crossties, near the block inserted in step 14. Make sure the ends of the chain are secure!

18.To collapse the lift cylinder, open the emergency lowering valve. When the piston is completely down, close the emergency lowering valve. At this point the carriage and telescopic are supported by the wooden block. The chain serves as a safety backup.

19.Disconnect, then cap, the main supply hose from the bottom of the lift cylinder.

20.Using a 15/16 in. box wrench, remove the nut and washer from the bottom of the lift cylinder.

21.Wrap a lifting strap around the lift cylinder below the locating eye.

NOTE: To prevent the strap from slipping, place a hose clamp above and below the strap. Make sure the clamps are tight.

22.Attach the strap to a suitable hoist or other lifting device.

23.Carefully elevate the lift cylinder enough to release the pin that secures the cylinder housing to the main frame. This pin is located on the cylinder housing near the chain anchor.

24.Carefully swing the bottom of the lift cylinder out between the load wheels and slowly lower the lift cylinder to the floor.

25.Thread the nut on the lower cylinder stud to prevent damage to the stud threads.
