Visually inspect the hand pallet truck frame components and hydraulic unit for damage during shipping by the carrier. If damage is evident, notify the delivering carrier immediately and file the necessary claims. Test the hand pallet truck pump for proper operation. If the hydraulic pump does not respond to movement of the handle, an air lock may have developed during shipping. To remedy this, go to the user friendly “Troubleshooting,” guide on page 20 in this manual.

This manual covers the models RJ50-N (Nylon Wheel) and RJ50-P (Poly Wheel) with the parking brake option.

Operate this hand pallet lift truck responsibly. If you fail to follow the safety rules while using this hand pallet lift truck, you could hurt yourself or someone else, or damage equipment.

We built this hand pallet lift truck for one job — to handle and transport material. Use it for nothing else.

Any equipment can be hazardous if not used properly, including this hand pallet lift truck.

Operate this hand pallet lift truck only if you are authorized and trained to do so.

Before you use this hand pallet lift truck, read this manual completely. Make sure that you understand all of the content. If you do not understand any part of this manual, tell your supervisor.

Always operate the hand pallet lift truck with care and good judgment. Be responsible.

Do not operate the hand pallet lift truck with oily hands or oily shoes, due to the risk of slipping.

Floors should be strong enough to handle the heaviest allowed load being transported.

Use extreme care around objects that stick out from racks, shelves, or walls. These objects can cause bodily injury or damage to the hand pallet lift truck.

Never carry passengers.

Never overload your hand pallet truck. Stay within the rated capacity.

Distribute the load evenly on the forks. Do not concentrate loads at one point or load one fork more than the other.

Never allow anyone to stand on or near the hand pallet lift truck’s forks.

Do not use the hand pallet lift truck if it has been repaired, modified, or adjusted, unless it has been checked and approved by your supervisor or another authorized person.

Horseplay is dangerous to personnel and equipment, and is not permitted.

Be aware of other lift trucks in the area; operate the hand pallet lift truck cautiously.

•

Always yield the right-of-way to pedestrians.

Always make sure that the load is stable before moving to eliminate the opportunity for load shift.

Do not run while operating this hand pallet lift truck.

Do not use in cold storage, salty, or other corrosive environments.

•

Never allow anyone to stand in front of or immediately near a loaded hand pallet lift truck.

•

Do not allow your hand pallet truck to drop from one level to another. Even a drop of 1 in. (25 mm) more than doubles the effected load momentarily and results in a “shock” that can bend or break components.

Use the hand pallet lift truck only to transport loads.

Never put your feet, hands, or any other body part under the frame assembly.

Use extreme care when rounding corners.

Too fast a speed could cause a hand pallet lift truck to tip. If loaded, the load could shift and fall.

When the load impairs visibility, the hand pallet lift truck should be pulled and not pushed.

Come to a stop gently and carefully to prevent the load from slipping off of the load carriers.

Always keep a safe distance from the edges of loading bays and loading ramps. Be attentive to marked risk areas.

Stop when approaching crossing aisles, when exiting an aisle, or when visibility is obstructed.

Before operating a hand pallet lift truck over a loading ramp, make sure that the loading ramp is correctly secured and has the necessary load bearing capacity. Operate the hand pallet lift truck slowly and carefully across the ramp.

When parking a hand pallet lift truck on another vehicle, make sure that the parking brake, if equipped, has been applied and/or a parking rack, if available, is used.

Report all accidents—personal, damage to buildings or equipment—to your supervisor immediately. All unsafe conditions on the hand pallet lift truck should also be reported.

Before operating or moving a hand pallet lift truck into an elevator, make sure that the elevator is approved for total weight of the hand pallet lift truck, the load, the operator, and any other passenger in the elevator.

When entering the elevator, the load must enter first—not the operator. No other person should be in the elevator when the load or hand pallet lift truck enters or leaves.

Securely set the brakes and block the wheels of highway trucks, trailers, and railroad cars before you load or unload them. Check the highway truck/trailer/railroad car doorway clearance. Make sure floors of highway trucks, trailers, and railroad cars will support the weight of the loaded hand pallet truck. Cross railroad tracks only at approved floor grade crossings. Do not park hand pallet trucks within 8 ft. (2.4 m) of railroad tracks.

Ask local railroad authorities or your supervisor which warning devices to use.

Models RJ50-N and RJ50-P Hand Pallet Lift Trucks

When lifting a hand pallet lift truck, using lifting equipment, it is recommended to use a hand pallet lift truck equipped with a lifting eye.

Injury may occur when lifting the hydraulic end of the hand pallet lift truck. Cuts may occur when lifting the forks and end-plate.

Use extreme caution when lifting a hand pallet lift truck by hand.

The weight of the load must be within the hand pallet lift truck’s permitted lifting capacity. For load weight and lifting capacity rate, see the specification tag on the truck and Figure 1.

To lift a hand pallet lift truck either by hand or with lifting equipment, follow these warning instructions.

If any tag and/or decal becomes unreadable, it must be replaced. Contact your supervisor or local authorized Raymond Sales and Service Center for a replacement.

3. For free handle movement, place the lift/lower lever in the neutral position.

2. To lower the load, pull up on the lift/lower lever.

1. To lift the load, push down on the lift/lower lever. Pump the handle to lift the load from the floor.

For maximum operating efficiency, follow these instructions: (See Figure 2).

Your head, arms, hands, legs, or feet can be seriously injured if they strike objects while the hand pallet truck is moving.

Keep your body clear of the pallet truck and nearby objects and your hands on the control handle while walking with a hand pallet truck.

The neutral position disengages the pump from the lifting mechanism. This frees the handle, which makes pulling loads much easier. Also, the pump is not being subjected to shock pressures while the hand pallet lift truck is in motion.

To avoid the risk of tripping, care should be taken to observe the parking brake’s protruding cable.

NOTE

To avoid the risk of being injured when using a hand pallet lift truck equipped with a parking brake, use extreme care around protruding parts, especially in a confined area.

! WARNING

If your hand pallet lift truck is equipped with a parking brake, obey the following warning: (See Figure 3.)

After applying the parking brake, check to make sure that the steering mechanism is locked. This will assure you that the hand pallet lift truck has been properly parked.

• Always keep your hands on the control handle.

• Before lowering, make sure the area beneath the forks is clear.

• Make sure that there are no conditions in the hydraulic system that may cause accidental lowering.

To avoid injury, do the following: (For location of numbered callouts, see Figure 4.)

Never ride on the hand pallet lift truck.

The hand pallet lift truck is used only to transport loads.

Always wear appropriate safety apparel, such as safety shoes, safety glasses, and heavy-duty gloves when working with a hand pallet lift truck.

Handle only loads that are stable, evenly distributed on the forks, and safely arranged.

Use caution when handling long and high loads. Load support is recommended for high loads.

Loaded or unloaded, operate the hand pallet lift truck with great care. Overturning can occur, particularly when handling high loads or when operating with a hand pallet lift truck fitted with a load support or an extension frame in the raised position.

5. Slip the valve rod (5) through the hole on the axle (3).

4. Lock the axle (3) using the locking pin (4).

To assemble the control handle, follow these instructions: (See Figure 6 for a visual of the required assembly tools. See Figure 5 on page 11 for location of assembly reference numbers, and Table 2 for the legend of assembly reference numbers.)

Always assemble the control handle (1) before removing the transport pin (8).

The spring (9) may come loose and cause injuries if the transport pin (8) is removed prior to assembling the control handle (1).

8. Push down on the control handle and remove the transport pin (8) that has been fitted prior to delivery.

7. Adjust the lifting/lowering function and the neutral position using the nut (7).

6. Engage the valve rod (5) in the groove of the lowering pedal (6).

To assemble hydraulics in the body, follow these instructions: (See Table 2 and Figure 5 on page 11.)

Always clean and inspect dismantled parts before re-assembling. Always replace gaskets before re-assembling.

NOTE

Use caution when inserting locking pins (4, 15) with a hammer. The force can cause the locking pins to bounce, causing damage. Be careful when fitting the locking pins.

When fitting a circlip (16), there is a risk that the circlip can slip off the circlip bar and cause injury. Be careful when fitting the circlip. Raymond recommends using circlip pliers as shown in Figure 6 on page 12.

3. Install the circlip (16) in the groove of the top cap (11).

2. Fit the arm bolts (14) and lock them with locking pins (15).

1. With the upper section of the hydraulic assembly (10) in the top cap (11), insert the hydraulic assembly pressure plate (12) between the turning tube links (13).

Inspection

To make sure that your hand pallet lift truck is operating efficiently, economically, and safely, it is strongly recommended that a service and maintenance agreement be signed with your Raymond Sales and Service Center.

The hand pallet lift truck should be maintained on a regular basis, as set out in the service checks and lubrication diagram. (See Figure 7 on page 15.) Only authorized and trained personnel are permitted to maintain, adjust, or repair the hand pallet lift truck.

All pivot points are equipped with lubricated bushings and bearings. To prolong the life of the truck, it is recommended that all pivot points be lubricated every 6 months. The truck is equipped with grease fittings conveniently located at important pivot points. Apply grease every 6 months under normal operating conditions.

Always clean the hand pallet lift truck to ensure its reliability. After cleaning the hand pallet lift truck, it should be lubricated by trained and authorized personnel only. For lubrication points, see Figure 7.

2. Lower the truck and load with 600 lbs. (272 kg) (approximate).

1. Check for and fix and possible oil leaks.

Your hydraulic system is maintenance free. Do not add hydraulic oil unless there is, or has been, a leak. Use recommended hydraulic oil or equivalent. Other oils, fluids, or solvents can damage your hydraulic system. If you suspect additional oil is required, follow these steps:

Check with your supervisor to make sure that the correct type of hydraulic oil is used. (See Table 3 for “Types of Oil and Grease for the Hydraulic System.”)

5. Pull up on the release lever (Item 3, Figure 11) and collapse the lift piston until oil starts to ooze from the screw.

It is extremely important that Step 5 is performed. Otherwise, air in the pump can force out the wiper seal (Item 24, Figure 11). Take care when adding oil not to introduce impurities into the hydraulic system.

Always secure the hand pallet lift truck when carrying out repairs. A badly supported hand pallet lift truck could cause injury.

Before welding or grinding on painted surfaces always sandblast (remove) at least 4 to 6 in. (102 to 152 mm) of paint.

Heated paint gives off harmful gases.

Use the troubleshooting procedures shown in Table 5 as a guide only. Do not try to service this lift truck. Contact your Service Department or your local authorized Raymond Sales and Service Center listed on the back of this manual.

Turn the truck on its side to access the underside of the fork. With a wrench, tighten the eye bolt nut against the push bar end.

Check for and fix any leaks. Refer to the hydraulic system section for the procedure for adding hydraulic oil. See “Hydraulic System” on page 16.

Pull up on the lift/lower lever and hold while pumping the handle 8 to 10 times to purge the valve system.

Turn the nut on the chain anchor clockwise until the pumping action, while in neutral, does not raise the forks.

Pull up on the lift/lower lever and hold while pumping the handle 8 to 10 times to bleed air from the system.

Hand Pallet Truck Warranty

This warranty is void in the event of defects or damage caused by misuse, abuse, or accident. Any truck used under adverse conditions, such as fish, meat or poultry processing plants, tanneries, freezer applications, or any other application where the unit is operating in water or subjected to fluid or chemicals is NOT covered under any warranty.

Components found to be defective by an authorized Raymond Sales and Service Center during the warranty period will be replaced or repaired as indicated above. Replacement components installed during the defined period set forth above, are warranted for the balance of the applicable truck warranty period, or 90 days, whichever is longer. Additionally, freight charges for parts involved in the replacement or repair of a defective component will be paid by Raymond, provided that the replacement or repair is made by an authorized Raymond Sales and Service Center. Labor or miscellaneous costs involved in the replacement of any components determined to be defective are not covered. Local taxes, if any, are excluded.

Notwithstanding any other language contained herein, this warranty is expressly voided without any further notice if any modification is made to the Raymond equipment, or if additional components or devices are added to the Raymond equipment, without prior approval having been granted in writing by The Raymond Corporation.

The Raymond Corporation reserves the right to make changes and improvements in design without making changes to previously manufactured vehicles.

This warranty does not cover oil leaks, adjustments, or loose hardware.

Trainees may operate a powered industrial truck only under the direct supervision of persons who have the knowledge, training, and experience to train operators and evaluate their competence and where such operation does not endanger the trainee or other employees. (l) (2) (i) (A) (B) Training shall consist of a combination of formal instruction (e.g. lecture, discussion, interactive computer learning, videotape, written material), practical training (demonstrations performed by the trainer and practical exercises performed by the trainee), and evaluation of the operator’s performance in the workplace. Check with your local OSHA office or provincial Labor Bureau to confirm which regulations govern your workplace.

Refresher training, including an evaluation of the effectiveness of that training, shall be conducted as required by paragraph (l) (4) (ii) to ensure that the operator has the knowledge and skills needed to operate the powered industrial truck safely. (l) (4) (i)

Prior to permitting an employee to operate a powered industrial truck (except for training purposes), the employer shall ensure that each operator has successfully completed the training required by this paragraph. (l) (1) (ii)

The use of forklift trucks in the workplace is governed by various regulations. In the United States, the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has issued regulations which cover the majority of workplaces.

Note: Some or all of the following may not be applicable to your hand pallet lift truck.

The employer shall ensure that each powered industrial truck operator is competent to operate a powered industrial truck safely, as demonstrated by the successful completion of the training and evaluation specified in this paragraph. (l) (1) (i)

The user shall see that all nameplates and markings are in place and are maintained in a legible condition. (a) (6)

The employer shall certify that each operator has been trained and evaluated as required by this paragraph (l).

The certification shall include the name of the operator, the date of the training, the date of the evaluation, and the identity of the person(s) performing the training or evaluation. (l) (6)

The employer shall prohibit arms or legs from being placed between the uprights of the mast or outside the running lines of the truck. (m) (4)

Brakes shall be set and wheel blocks shall be in place to prevent movement of trucks, trailers or railroad cars while loading or unloading. Fixed jacks may be necessary to support a semitrailer when the trailer is not coupled to a tractor. The flooring of trucks, trailers, and railroad cars shall be checked for breaks and weakness before they are driven onto. (m) (7)

Only approved industrial trucks shall be used in hazardous locations. (m) (11)

All traffic regulations shall be observed, including authorized plant speed limits. A safe distance shall be maintained approximately three truck lengths from the truck ahead, and the truck shall be kept under control at all times. (n) (1)

The driver shall be required to slow down and sound the horn at cross aisles and other locations where vision is obstructed. If the load being carried obstructs forward view, the driver shall be required to travel with the load trailing. (n) (4)

An evaluation of each powered industrial truck operator’s performance shall be conducted at least once every three years. (l) (4) (iii)

Industrial trucks shall be examined before being placed in service, and shall not be placed in service if the examination shows any condition adversely affecting the safety of the truck. Such examination shall be made at least daily. Where powered industrial trucks are used on a round-the-clock basis, they shall be examined after each shift. Defects when found shall be immediately reported and corrected. (q) (7)

All parts of any such industrial truck requiring replacement shall be replaced only by parts equivalent as to safety with those used in the original design. (q) (5)

Any power-operated industrial truck not in safe operating condition shall be removed from service. All repairs shall be made by authorized personnel. (q) (1)

If at any time a powered industrial truck is found to be in need of repair, defective, or in any way unsafe, the truck shall be taken out of service until it has been restored to safe operating condition. (p) (1)
