CHAPTER 8 LUBRICATION

General Information

ACAUTION: NEVER attempt to lubricate this unit when any part of the machine is in motion. ALWAYS BE SURE to exercise the MANDATORY SAFETY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURE (page 8) BEFORE proceeding to lubricate this equipment.

lt is well to remember that a sufficient amount of oil and grease will prevent excessive part wear and early failure.

Beater Transmission

The Beater Transmission has a capacity of 3-1 /2 lb (I .6 kg) of medium soft Grease. When adding or replacing the in the Housing, use a good grade of multipurpose Lithium base Grease.

NOTE: Beater Transmissions, which are available as complete assembly replacement parts, are delivered without Grease installed. Whenever lubricant Is removed, for Transmission service, BE SURE to replace it with the correct type and amount of Grease.

Worm Gear Transmission

The Worm Gear Transmission oil level should be checked after every 50 hours of operation. Check the fluid level by removing the Relief Plug on the side of the Transmission Housing. The Transmission fluid capacity is 2-1/2 U.S. pints (0.56 liters).

A special Worm Gear Lube (GEHL part #067855) is installed at the factory. This Worm Gear Lube has been specially formulated to meet the requirement of this Transmission and should be ordered and used to replace or replenish the oil, as necessary.

NOTE: To help maintain proper Worm Gear Transmission operation and to help extend internal component life, BE SURE to keep the Transmission filled to the proper level at all times. Do NOT however, overfill the Transmission. If, for some reason, GEHL Worm Gear Lube (067855) is NOT available, when required, SAE 140 EP Gear Lube can be temporarily substituted.

Oiling

Apply motor oil on all the Roller Chains after every 10 hours of operation. Frequently, apply lubricating oil to Beater Clutch Shaft to insure proper Clutch operation.

NOTE: Frequently lubricate the Telescoping Drive Shield to assure freedom of rotation. At the end of the working season, brush the Apron Chains with used motor oil.

Greasing

NOTE: Grease all fittings on a prescribed basis, at the intervals of operation listed, before and after storing the unit and as otherwise listed. Use a good grade of Lithium base grease.

Wipe dirt from the fittings before greasing to prevent the dirt from being forced into the Bearings or pivots. Replace any missing threaded fittings, when noted. Force the grease into the fitting until it comes out at the Bearing Seal or at the Shaft. To minimize dirt build-up, a void excessive greasing.

NOTE: In addition to the grease fittings, repack the Running Gear Wheel Bearings at least once avery season. The Telescoping Drive should also be separated and grease applied to all four square surfaces at least three times during the harvesting season.
