Adjusting the backlash Measuring the backlash This adjustment is made using the shim(s) (38). – Block the drive pinion. – Place the comparator tip onto a tooth of the crown gear at mid-height and at the tip of the tooth (Fig. 31). – Measure the backlash. – Perform this operation on four points opposite to the diameter of the crown wheel. – Calculate the average over the 4 values. – This value must be between 0,15 and 0,45 mm. – Two possible cases can occur, excessive or insufficient backlash.

Excessive backlash If the measured backlash is excessive, the ring gear must be moved closer to the pinion. This therefore requires the thickness of the shim (38) to be increased and that of the deflector (20) to be decreased by an equal amount in order not to alter the preload on the differential bearing blocks.

Insufficient backlash If the measured backlash is insufficient, the ring gear must be moved further away from the pinion. This therefore requires the thickness of the shim (38) to be decreased and that of the deflector (20) to be increased by an equal amount in order not to alter the preload on the differential bearing blocks.
