Too large an amount of grease causes overheating of bearing! excessive churning and rapid breakdown of the grease, rupture of the seal and leakage of the lubricant past the seal. If a bearing shoJld run excessively warm because of over filling! it is advisable to remove the pressure fitting and allow the excess lubricant to escape. The bearing should be allowed to operate and purge itself of excess lubricant for 10 to 15 minutes before replacing the' fitting.
ENCLOSED GEAR CASES
-
The lubricant in all gear cases must be kept at the recommended level. Check the lubricant at regular intervals at the dip stick or check plug. When making seasonal change of gear case lubricant, the used oil can be pumped out into a drum or container, for final disposal. Drain all remaining oil from the case through the drain plug opening. After draining, the gear cases should be flushed clean with fuel oil or a light petroleum oil, before re-filling. Oil from the swing gear cases, can be removed by using the circulating pump.
OPEN GEARS
Gears and pinions, which are not enclosed! should be kept coated with a good grade of open gear lubricant (OGL), as recommended in Lubricantion Charts.
