6.4 Occupant protection
General
The comprehensive occupant protection system used in the 911 Carrera models (991) includes the following main components: • Two-stage, full size airbags for the driver and passenger • Porsche Side Impact Protection System (POSIP) comprising: - Head airbags for driver and passenger integrated in the door panels - Thorax side airbags in the front seats for driver and passenger - Side impact protection in the doors • Safety steering column • 3-point automatic seat belts • Seat-belt pretensioners (front) and force limiters (front) • Roll-over sensor • ISOFIX brackets on the rear seats, top-tether anchor on the rear shelf and ISOFIX preparation on the passenger seat for securing a child seat
The driver and passenger are protected by full-size airbags, which are deployed in two stages depending on the severity and type of accident, e.g. head-on or diagonally from the front. Two sensors at the front of the vehicle detect a crash together with the sensor technology in the airbag control unit and accurately evaluate this information in just fractions of a second. In less severe accidents, the occupants are restrained by the first stage. The airbag is softer in this stage, reducing the stress on the occupants.

The standard Porsche Side Impact Protection System POSIP includes front thorax side airbags integrated in the seat, head airbags in the door panels as well as side impact protection in the doors. All 911 Carrera models also feature a standard safety steering column as well as 3-point automatic seat belts with pyrotechnic seat-belt pretensioners (front) and energy-absorbing structures in the dashboard. A roll-over sensor detects an imminent roll-over and automatically activates the head airbags and seat-belt pretensioners.

For easy and secure installation of child seats in all 911 Carrera models, an ISOFIX mounting is installed as standard on the rear seats and a top-tether anchor (additional mounting point for AUS) is installed on the rear shelf, while a preparation for ISOFIX mountings is optionally available for the passenger seat. This means that child seats with the particularly safe and standardized ISOFIX system can be used. The passenger’s airbag can be deactivated for this purpose using a key-operated switch.
Airbag components
The airbag control unit performs the following tasks: • Supplying the ignition energy • System and component monitoring • Fault detection and storage • Activation of airbag warning light in the event of an accident • Detection of vehicle deceleration • Reliable triggering of the system The airbag control unit (see arrow in Fig. 6_07_11) is secured to a holder on the center tunnel with three M6 cap nuts.
The front sensors (see arrow in Fig. 6_08_11) are used for early detection of the severity of an accident in the event of a head-on collision and are installed on the left and right front fenders, near the headlights. Body exterior 6

Danger of serious or fatal injuries for the passenger if the passenger’s airbag remains switched off after removing the child seat. The passenger’s airbag must be switched on after removing the child seat.
The side sensors (see arrow in Fig. 6_09_11) are used for detection of a side collision and are installed on the inside of the left and right door sills.
The pressure sensors (see arrow in Fig. 6_10_11) are used for detection of a side collision and are clipped onto the left and right door mounting brackets.

Switching the passenger’s airbag on and off
The passenger’s airbag can be switched off or on using the emergency key (see Fig. 6_11_11).
PASS AIR BAG OFF warning light If the airbag on the passenger’s side (seat 2) is switched off, the PASS AIR BAG OFF warning light lights up continuously on the overhead operating console when the ignition is switched on.

Child seat with ISOFIX system
The retaining eyelets (A) of the ISOFIX child seat anchorage are located on passenger’s seat on the seat surface (depending on equipment version) and on the rear seats.
When installing on the rear seats, the bottom parts of the backrests must first be removed.
The bottom parts of the backrests are pulled out at the top center (velcro fastener) and detached at the ISOFIX brackets.

The key-operated switch for switching off the passenger's airbag, the PASS AIR BAG OFF warning light and the ISOFIX mounting are not installed at the factory. These can be retrofitted by a Porsche dealer.
