GEN ER A L IN F O R M A T IO N 0-3
KEYS A N D LOCKS Two keys are provided w ith each vehicle. The keys operate the ignition sw itch and door locks.
EMERGENCY STARTING • Never tow the vehicle to start because the surge forw ard w hen the engine starts could cause a collision w ith the tow vehicle. • Engines in vehicles w ith autom atic transm issions can n o t be started by pushing the vehicle. • T o start the vehicle w hen the Energizer (b attery ) is discharged, use a single auxiliary b attery or Energizer o f the same nominal voltage as th e discharged b attery , w ith suitable jum per cables. • Make connections as set fo rth below under “ Jum p S tarting With A uxiliary (B ooster) B attery ” to lessen the chance o f personal injury or pro p erty damage. C A U T IO N : Never expose battery to open flam e or electric spark—battery action generates hydrogen gas which is flam m able and explosive. D o n 't allow battery fluid to contact skin, eyes, fabrics, or painted surfaces—fluid is a sulfuric acid solution which could cause serious personal injury or property damage. Wear eye protection when w o rk ing w ith battery.
“ PARK ” (n eu tral for m anual transm ission). T u rn off lights, h eater an d other electrical loads. 2. Remove vent caps from b o th the b o o ster and the discharged batteries. Lay a clo th over the open vent wells o f each b attery . These tw o actions help reduce the explosion hazard always present in either b attery when connecting “live” booster batteries to “ dead” batteries. 3. A ttach one end o f one ju m p er cable to the positive term inal o f the booster battery (identified by a red color, “ +” or “ P ” on the b attery case, post o r clam p) and the o th er end o f same cable to positive term inal o f dis charged battery. Do NOT perm it vehicles to touch each other, as this could establish a ground connection and co u n teract th e benefits o f this procedure. 4. A ttach one end o f th e rem aining negative ( —) cable to th e negative term inal (black color, ” or “ N ”) o f the booster b attery, and the o th er end to the engine lift bracket on 6 cylinder m odels and the delcotron m o u n t ing b racket on V8 m odels (see Figure 4) o f your 1972 vehicle (d o n o t connect directly to negative post o f dead b a tte ry )—taking care th a t clamps from one cable do n o t inadvertently to u c h th e clamps on th e o th er cable. Do n o t lean over th e b attery w hen m aking this connection. Reverse this sequence exactly when removing the jum per cables. Re-install vent caps and th ro w cloths away as the cloths m ay have corrosive acid on them .
C A U T IO N :
Jump Starting With Auxiliary (Booster) Battery Both booster and discharged b attery should be treated carefully w hen using jum per cables. Following exactly the procedure outlined below , being careful n o t to cause sparks: 1.
Set parking brake and place autom atic transm ission in
A n y procedure other than the above
could result in: (1) personal injury caused by electrolyte squirting out the battery vents, (2) personal injury or property damage due to battery explosion, (3) damage to the charging system of the booster vehicle or o f the im m obilized vehicle. Do not attem p t to jum p start a vehicle having a frozen battery because the battery may rupture or explode. If a frozen battery is suspected, examine all fill vents on the battery. If ice can be seen, or if the electrolyte fluid cannot be seen, do n o t attem pt to start w ith jum per cables as long as the battery remains frozen.
PUSH STARTING
L-6 MODELS
If y o u r vehicle is equipped w ith a m anual transm ission, it can be started in an em ergency by pushing. When being pushed to start the engine, tu rn o ff all unnecessary electrical loads, tu rn ignition to “ ON,” depress the clutch pedal an d place the shift lever in high gear. Release the clu tch pedal w hen speed reaches 10 to 15 miles per hour. Bum pers and other parts co n tacted b y the pushing vehicle should be p ro tected from damage during pushing. Never tow th e vehicle to start.
TOWING
V -8 MODELS Fig. 4 —Booster Battery Cable Ground Connection.
N orm ally y o u r vehicle m ay be tow ed w ith all four wheels on th e ground for distances up to 50 miles at speeds o f less th an 35 MPH. The engine should be o ff and the transm ission in neutral. H owever, the rear wheels m ust be raised o ff th e ground or
