TO THE OWNER This manual contains information concerning the adjustment and maintenance of your New Holland Model BR740A, BR750A, BR770A and BR780A Round Balers. You have purchased a dependable machine, but only by proper care and operation can you expect to receive the performance and long service built into this round baler. Please have all operators read this manual carefully and keep it available for ready reference.

Your New Holland dealer will instruct you in the general operation of your round baler. (Refer to the “Delivery Report” at the back of this manual.) Your dealer’s staff of factory-trained service technicians will be glad to answer any questions that may arise regarding the operation of your round baler.

These parts are manufactured and carefully inspected to insure high quality and accurate fitting of any necessary replacement parts. Be prepared to give your dealer the model and product identification number (PIN) of the round baler, when ordering parts. Locate these numbers now and record them below. Refer to the “General Information” section of this manual for the location of the model and PIN numbers of your round baler.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONARY STATEMENTS A careful operator is the best operator. Most accidents can be avoided by observing certain precautions. To help prevent accidents, read the following precautions before operating this equipment. Equipment should be operated only by those who are responsible and instructed to do so.

Carefully review the procedures given in this manual with all operators. It is important that all operators be familiar with and follow safety precautions.

The Round Baler

4. Do not permit anyone to ride on the round baler.

2. Replace all damaged, missing or illegible safety decals.

5. Do not engage the PTO before you are sure everyone is clear of the round baler.

3. Install all shields before operating the round baler.

6. Do not work around the round baler in loose clothing that might catch in moving parts.

4. Keep the round baler free of dust, chaff and hay.

Always have a fire extinguisher handy.

7. Do not attempt to pull crop from the round baler without turning off the PTO.

5. Never operate the round baler without the PTO shield in place. Make sure the PTO shield rotates freely. On a BR780A and a BR740A with rotor make sure the shield chain is attached.

8. Keep hands away from the twine knife. Be sure all persons are clear of the baler before operating the twine tubes.

1. Keep safety decals free of dirt and grime.

9. If the twine does not start, stop the round baler before correcting the problem.

Towing the Round Baler on Public Road 1. Do not tow with a vehicle other than Ag tractor.

10. Keep hands away from the net knife.

2. Do not exceed 32 KPH (20 MPH) when towing the round baler. Do not tow the baler with a bale in the bale chamber.

11. Do not operate above the rated PTO speed.

12. Do not back over windrows, the hay may wedge between the floor roll and pickup.

13. Do not make overweight bales. The round baler may be damaged.

4. Refer to local, state or provincial laws and regulations for restrictions on public roads.

14. Do not exceed the full bale size. An oversize bale will put excessive stress on the round baler components.

3. Make sure the SMV, reflective tape and lights are clean and clearly visible.

5. Make sure the taillights are operating properly.

15. Be sure all persons are clear of the round baler before starting the round baler, activating the wrapper or opening the tailgate.

6. Raise and secure the pickup in its highest position.

16. Do not adjust the pickup lower than necessary.

Operating the Round Baler 1. Read the Operator’s Manual before operating the round baler.

17. When operating on slopes, the bale must be ejected on the side of the slope to prevent the bale from rolling into the baler or down the hill.

2. Only allow properly trained persons to operate the round baler.

18. Avoid contact with electric power lines. Be especially careful when opening the tailgate.

3. Allow only one operator on the tractor.

Servicing the Round Baler 1. Do not service the round baler with the tailgate in the raised position unless the valve safety lock is in the locked position.

7. Escaping hydraulic fluid under pressure can penetrate the skin causing serious injury.

Do not use your hand to check for leaks. Use a piece of cardboard or paper.

• Stop the engine and relieve the pressure before connecting or disconnecting hydraulic lines.

• Tighten all connections before starting the engine or pressurizing the hydraulic lines.

• If hydraulic fluid penetrates the skin, obtain medical attention immediately.

• Continuous long term contact with hydraulic fluid may cause skin cancer. Avoid long term contact and wash the skin promptly with soap and water.

8. To protect the alternator and battery of the tractor, always detach the tractor from the baler before welding or working on the baler electrical components.

•

2. Make sure the PTO drive is disengaged, the tractor engine is shut off and the electric power supply to the baler is disconnected before doing any lubrication, maintenance, or service work on the baler.

3. Park on level ground and block the wheels to prevent the round baler from rolling.

4. Do not adjust the belts with the round baler running.

5. Do not oil the chains with the baler running.

6. Do not modify or allow anyone else to modify the round baler without consulting the dealer.

10. Hydraulic flexible hose assemblies must be inspected periodically for signs of abrasive rubbing of the cover, leakage, or impending failure and appropriate corrective action taken to help prevent unexpected assembly failures.

BALER SAFETY FEATURES SHIELDS – All shields must be closed and latched before operating the baler Side Shields -- There is a large shield, 1 and 2, on each side of the baler that covers the chain drives.

The shield should be down when the baler is operating. To open either shield, (un-hook rubber latch in area 9, rotor units only), move the latch lever, 3, and lift the shield up and out from the handle, 4. Air cylinders will keep the door open.

Front Shield -- The front cover, 5, is opened the same as the side shields. Move the latch lever, 6, and pull forward at the bottom of the door. Open the door far enough to latch. To close the door, lift it slightly and move the latch to the side.

Stuffer Drive Shield – This shield, 1, covers the drive to the stuffer on wide pickups with a stuffer. To open the shield, flip the latch, 6, grab the handle, 3, and pull outward and free the shield from the pin, 4.

Rotate the shield up until the bolt, 2, is over the large end of the key hole slot. Pull the shield out over the bolt head. Rotate the shield toward the rear about the pivot, 5.

Top step with latch The top step, 7, acts as a shield for the driveline protection.

Rotor Drive Shield – This shield, 1, covers the drive to the rotor on wide pickups with a rotor. To open the shield, grab the handle, 2. Turn quarter turn latch, 3.

Rotate the shield, 1, towards the rear about pivot, 4.

LATCHES – All latches must be fastened before operating the baler.

Side Twine Box Latches – All balers have a twine box, 1, on each side of the baler, under the side shield. The twine box can be rotated away from the baler to access the drives behind the boxes. The rubber latch, 2, holds the twine box in position.

Spare Net Box Latches – The rubber latch, 1, holds the cover down on the spare net box, 2. There is a latch on each side.

Net Roll Latch – The spring loaded latch, 1, holds the roll of net in the operating position. Make sure the pipe, 2, is seated in the notch, 3.

Gearbox Access Door with Latch – This door, 1, is at the back of the optional center twine box on twine only units. It provides access to the gearbox. During operation, keep the door latched to keep crop out of the twine box.

RETAINERS – The retainers hold components of the baler in position during operation or transport.

Net Roll Rotation Lock – The lock, 1, is located on the right end of the net roll support. It is used when removing the empty cardboard tube that the net is wrapped on. To remove the tube, first engage the lock. Rotate the latch on the left end down and pull the net mounting pipe out. The cardboard tube must be rotated to remove it. After installation of a new roll of net the lock must be disengaged.

When wrapping with twine and there is a partial roll of net installed, use the net roll rotation lock. This will keep the roll of net in position to be used again.

PTO Securement Strap – The strap, 1, holds the front of the PTO when the baler is parked or towed.

Make sure the PTO is fully closed. Use the rubber strap, 1, to keep the PTO in place. Secure strap around tongue when PTO is attached to a tractor.

Hose and Harness Support – The step, 1, will hold four hydraulic hoses, 2, and two wire harnesses, 3.

It is used when the baler is parked or in transport. The hoses and harnesses may have to be supported up toward the hitch to keep them from dragging during transport.

LATCHES -- SAFETY

CAUTION The safety latches must be used or serious injury could result.

Tailgate Hydraulic Lockout – whenever work is to be done on the baler with the tailgate raised, put the tailgate hydraulic lockout, 1, in the locked position, 2.

It is dangerous to work under or near the tailgate, even if only partially raised, without the lockout on.

PTO Shield Chain – The chain is only on the BR780A and balers with a rotor cutter. The chain prevents the PTO shield from rotating. The chain, 1, is permanently fastened to the PTO shield on one end, 2. The other end has a clip, 3, to fasten it to the tongue at the ring, 4. The only time the chain should be unfastened is when the PTO is removed or for lubrication.

The top of the net wrapper or twine box has been designed strong enough to stand on. To get there from the top step, kneel on the top surface, 1, and pull yourself up using the hand rail, 2. The pipe, 3, across the top can also be used as a handrail.
