Bromance is blooming for the bromeliad monster plant sale YOU better beleaf, it the annual monster bromeliad plant sale is happening on 31 October and 1 November! President of the Bromeliad Society, John Casey said the sale was an excellent opportunity for people to come along and talk to the sellers about growing these diverse beauties. “There will be growers from Hervey Bay, Maryborough and Bundaberg who live on properties with different growing conditions on their properties. These people have learned from years of experience what works best to help these plants thrive and are happy to talk to buyers about their plants,” said Mr Casey. “This year we will have 18 sellers, which is the most amount we’ve ever had, so it’s going to be a great sale!” The Bromeliad Society will be handing out leaflets on how to grow bromeliads. Mr Casey said bromeliads are easy to grow as they can survive on little water and are low maintenance. He said the main thing to remember is they prefer watering in the centre cup, not so much on the roots. Mr Casey’s love of bromeliad’s started about six years ago when he bought his first bromeliad from Sue and Godfrey Loughlan, members of the Bromeliad Society. “They taught me a lot about how to grow them and all the different genera available.” Mr Casey said he was so impressed with the Loughlan’s extensive collection at their home and knowledge they possessed.

He developed a love for the plants from then and was invited to join the Bromeliad Society. “Joining the society was the best and worst thing that happened to me!” “My plant collecting became a bit crazy. It is a good addiction though as there is nothing better than being outside and spending time in the garden if you’re ever feeling down.” The Bromeliad Society meets once a month and features informative guest speakers from as far as the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast to talk about the different bromeliads and how to grow them. “We encourage the members to give a brief talk and to bring a plant to the meetings

they would like to discuss or identify.” He said the meetings were a social get together and a great way to learn about the plants and start your own collection. The Bromeliad Society currently has about 70 members and welcomes newcomers to join. For more information about joining contact John Casey on 4125 5809. The annual bromeliad plant sale will take place on Saturday 31 October from 8am to 4pm and Sunday 1 November from 8am to 1pm at the Hervey Bay Senior Citizens Centre, 28 Totness St, Torquay. Entry is free with plant prices starting at $1.50, up to $150 for collector plants.
