Beam Scooters

I’d like to publicly ask a question of our Council in a public forum (transparency and accountability etc) because I’m not confident I’d get a legitimate answer otherwise. It relates to the Beam Mobility Scooter company that operates in Hervey Bay.

The park on Buccaneer Drive Urangan once had a bike rack adjacent to the gym equipment, I and many other ratepayers used it quite regularly it was the only bike rack in the area, that was until it was REMOVED by I can only assume the Council and replaced with Beam Mobility Scooters. I use the park and the gym

Waste of time Council bashing over recent increases to land valuations

JEEPERS, the keyboard warriors have been out in force over the recent release of land valuations for Queensland and unsurprisingly, if not uneducatedly, Fraser Coast Regional Council is in the crosshairs again for something that has nothing to do with them.

Under the Land Valuation Act 2010, the ValuerGeneral values land in Queensland.

The Valuer-General is the independent head of the State Valuation Service, Department of Resources.

The Valuer-General’s land valuations are used to calculate local government rates, rents for state leasehold land and state land tax.

If you pay attention to local commentary, you will read references to Council having to pay for the new Administration Centre somehow, or

equipment daily and the number of scooters parked blocking the equipment and seating is skyrocketing. This week on average there have been a minimum of 20 scooters parked on public land every day.

Now I don’t know what their usage figures are but considering there is a carpark 20 meters away I’m guessing the public facilities have become Beam Mobility’s storage area.

I want to know, how this happened and what financial agreement is in place to favour a private business at the cost of ratepayers.

Millionaires’ playground

Thank you for publishing so many opinions for and against the proposed high rise development on the Esplanade. FCRC may approve a twin tower millionaires’ playground for Hervey Bay but hang on ... we don’t even have a conference centre here, let alone a casino or a nightclub, a multi-story carpark or Messina gelateria. Look around at what attracts big spenders to other places like Noosa and the Gold Coast.

It’s not dog-friendly beaches and fish and chips shops. It’s not Stocklands and Big W. Is there anyone in Council

Council Officers getting a big fat raise. That’s all folly. It has nothing to do with Council. We can’t have it both ways. We cannot bask in the opportunities presented by a sharply rising property market and then complain that we have to pay a little more for the privilege.

The surge in property values signifies a community on the rise, showcasing a region that has vibrant growth.

Elevated property worth not only amplifies equity but also offers leverage for borrowing, empowering individuals to invest in ventures beyond real estate. It creates jobs.

It mirrors a thriving urban landscape advancing into the future with opportunity and promise.

Hervey Bay stands out as a prime beneficiary of the property boom, surpassing many regional

And was this same project rejected by the Bundaberg Council?

Proposed Development

This proposed development is still a cause for angst among many on the Fraser Coast but more so in Hervey Bay.

The three letters in last week’s paper said what the majority are thinking. I will now add another major concern.

I recently had to take overseas visitors to Hervey Bay Hospital emergency, after a dog attack…(that’s another story!!)

We were six and a half hours there. There were “no beds” available as they were being occupied. I believe there are only 10 beds in the area off the waiting room. One side of that area was closed and in the dark. We were advised whilst in the waiting room,

that an orthopaedic surgeon would need to check the several deep holes from the bites, BUT the surgeon was in theatre, prob 2-3 hours. This at approx 7pm ish. Tetanus was administered, in a corridor, and then we were told to again wait in the waiting room.

The patient was taken onto a bed at approx 9pm. We asked when the surgeon OR a doctor could look at the wound, as he should be out of theatre by now. We were advised he’d scrubbed up already and didn’t have time to come down…maybe after this op.

Approximately 10pm a very nice young doctor came. We were advised the surgeon had gone home as he had more surgery in the morning. The wounds needed cleaning and had been bleeding now for almost 7 hours. An antibiotic infusion had been given already. We were sent home after being told they MAY be able to get our friend into surgery sometime tomorrow, but not certain.

THE NEXT DAY WAS A NIGHTMARE…no need to detail any more… it got worse.

My reason for stating the above is this. Our hospital cannot cope now with the number of residents needing help. We were advised that there was ONLY ONE THEATRE available for ER, the hospital in general and for any other urgent ops. OMG!

There were ‘helpers’ on the ER ward helping nurses, but they were unable to access medication without authority. You could tell they were all stressed.

A lady with chest pain, whose daughter had to push and jump through hoops and push hard to get tests done.,.. after waiting 7 hours was sent home…. She was absolutely ropeable….as were many others we saw and heard.

What does Council think is going to happen when we have the massive influx of residents in a high rise building, plus the amount of residents in new estates going up everywhere?

The infrastructure is not there to cope with any of this let alone the ER/hospital.

First and foremost the hospital needs a massive infusion of money together with a recruitment drive for staff. $3 million (paid $2m already) for dingo management???

That money should have gone toward medical services on the Fraser Coast. AN ABSOLUTE NECESSITY.

Council and our Government representatives need to get their acts together and prioritise the NEEDS of the area, not just see $$ signs in building unnecessary structures that achieve nothing. ANGRY. You Bet ya!!

Imagine the stories about the health system when the visitor returns home.

New local Council officially sworn in

THE MAYOR and Councillors for the Fraser Coast Regional Council have been officially sworn in, following the Electoral Commission of Queensland’s declaration of the results of the recent election.

Family and close friends watched on as the Mayor and Councillors took their declaration of office at the Swearing-In Ceremony at the Brolga Theatre and Convention Centre in Maryborough.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said it had been an honour to serve as Mayor

for the past six years, and he was looking forward to continuing to serve the community for the next four years.

“The new Council includes a mix of experience and new faces who will all bring their unique talents and traits to represent the people of the Fraser Coast,” he said.

“The new Council will have a lot of work to do, but I am confident all Councillors will work together to ensure the Fraser Coast continues to be a great place to visit and an even better place to live.”

New Director appointed to the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery

THE NEW Director of the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery, Sarah Thomson, has a passion for socially engaged projects and is motivated by art’s capacity to offer fresh perspectives.

After serving as the Acting Director at the gallery since October 2023, Sarah is thrilled to be officially appointed Director of Hervey Bay Regional Gallery.

“The Fraser Coast has a vibrant and colourful cultural life, and the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery has an essential role in promoting cultural diversity, community engagement and freedom of expression,” Sarah said.

“My top priority is building the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery’s local and national reputation as a leading regional gallery and continuing the momentum we’ve built since reopening the gallery in April 2022,” she said.

With experience working at the Institute of Modern Art in Brisbane and two Bachelor degrees from QUT, Sarah brings a wealth of expertise to the gallery.

“As Acting Director, I was particularly involved in the development of the School of Displacement project with artist Keg de Souza which

explored housing insecurity and homelessness through a giant tent installation and multi-channel audio experience,” she said.

“I have also been the Public Programs and Community Engagement Officer at the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery so I come to this new position with a great appreciation for the gallery and the Hervey Bay community.”

“The gallery team is full of energy and enthusiasm. We are dedicated to building an exceptional gallery that the community can be proud of, and visitors will be delighted to discover.”

Two exhibitions are currently

on display at the gallery, Cane and Wilhelmus Briekers’ Eat the Moon.

“I’m excited to be presenting a solo exhibition by Phoebe Paradise later this year, coinciding with the installation of a new large-scale mural in the gallery foyer,” Sarah said.

“Additionally, we’ll feature curated group exhibitions and welcome Butchulla and Burmese artist Mia Boe for the Fiona Foley Residency, followed by her significant solo exhibition to conclude the year.”

Planting for a greener future with tree planting events

FRASER Coast residents are encouraged to put on their gardening gloves and get their hands dirty planting trees at a range of special community events throughout the region from April to July.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said Council’s Natural Environment team has organised three free community planting events to bring people together and connect with nature.

“Planting trees is good for the environment and good for the community. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and provide oxygen, improve air quality, conserve water, preserve soil, provide shade and support wildlife,” he said.

“Planting trees also helps make the Fraser Coast a more attractive place to live and visit.

The Community Tree Planting events include:

• Saturday April 27 – World Arbour Day, Burton Court at Point Vernon (8am – 11am)

• Saturday June 8 – World Environment Day at Pacific Drive, Booral (8am – 11am)

“There will be a range of activities at each of the tree planting events, including kid’s activities, guided eco walks and a free BBQ breakfast.”

Cr Paul Truscott said Council had a pivotal role in preserving, protecting, and managing the Fraser Coast’s unique environment.

“Our region has a diverse natural environment with an abundance of native flora and fauna, with events like these community tree plantings helping Council achieve our goal to plant 100,000 trees by 2030,” he said.

A Dog’s Day Out: Furtastic fun for pet lovers

Council is looking for Hervey Bay’s best-dressed dog as we prepare to host another fur-tastic day out for dogs and their owners.

The popular ‘Dogs Day Out’, which has drawn thousands of attendees since its inception in 2022 is returning to Brendan Hansen Park in Maryborough on Sunday 28 April celebrating our furry friends and responsible dog ownership.

Gerard Carlyon said it’s a great opportunity to socialise our dogs, enjoy a fun day out with the whole family, and learn more about responsible pet ownership.

“There will be market stalls showcasing pet products, demonstrations, and pet care information, along with prizes for the best-dressed dog, best dog trick, and an owner lookalike competition,” he said.

Having a dog can bring great joy, but it also comes with great responsibility including desexing, vaccinations, registration, exercise, training, and more.

“Free microchipping will be available, plus our Customer Service team will be on hand to register pets free for the first time or to renew your registration,” said Mr Carlyon. In the Fraser Coast it is compulsory for dogs to be registered with Council from 12 weeks of age and within 14 days of owners moving to the region.

New website a one-stop shop for local support services info

FRASER Coast Regional Council has developed a new user-friendly website to help residents easily access up-to-date information on local welfare, mental health, employment and other community support services.

Director of Strategy, Community and Development Gerard Carlyon said The Little Library website - http://thelittlelibrary.com. au - combined various existing resources into a searchable online platform making it a one-stop-shop for community support services information.

“Council previously produced a range of ‘Little Books’ to assist different sectors of the community,” he said.

“Examples included The Little Lime Pocket Book, which is a guide to local welfare and support services; The Little Blue Book, which is a mental health resource for teenagers and young adults; and The Little Black Book, which is produced in partnership with Fraser Coast Mates to assist men.

“There is also The Little Orange Book, a guide to volunteering on the Fraser Coast.

“While the Little Books proved popular, the information was spread across different resources, couldn’t be easily searched online and could become out of date quickly.

“That’s why we’ve transformed our Little Books into a new user-friendly website.”

Karla Steen, Coordinator of the new Connecting Communities Social Prescription program at the Urangan Community Wellness Centre, said the online database would enable anyone looking for information on clubs, groups or services to access relevant and current information.

“Social isolation and loneliness affect many of our community members and having information on the opportunities to connect socially will be beneficial to local residents and visitors,” she said.

“Whether you need help to work out what to study, tips on family budgeting, mental health resources or housing support, all the information you need is now at your fingertips,” Mr Carlyon said.

Residents can explore a

comprehensive online directory of local support services and resources, with advanced search filters to help you find what you are looking for.

Mr Carlyon said Council was committed to creating connected, inclusive communities through our places, spaces, and people.

“The Lovely Bones” an enchanting tale of grief

The narrative revolves around Susie Salmon’s emotional journey as she observes her family from the afterlife.

Youngs, making her directorial debut, explained her choice, expressing her desire to tackle a play that deeply moved her and presented a challenge.

“Despite the gruesomeness of the inciting action, ‘The Lovely Bones’ is not a sad story There are incredibly joyful moments to remind us there is always a light at the end of the seemingly endless tunnel.”

She emphasised the significance of narratives like ‘The Lovely Bones’.

While casting ethnically diverse characters posed a challenge, Youngs and her team prioritised inclusivity, striving to represent the characters while fostering diversity in the production accurately.

“Through conscientious efforts, we aimed to remain faithful to the narrative and cast a BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, Person of Colour) performer in the role of Ray.”

While finding an actor with the exact heritage described in the script proved unsuccessful, Youngs expressed her enthusiasm for the remarkable performer they chose, vowing to expand opportunities for

racially diverse casting in future productions.

Youngs said that while the script remains faithful to the original novel, it takes some artistic liberties to create a perfect blend of the book and the film adaptation.

Both theatre enthusiasts and newcomers are urged not to miss this emotionally charged production.

“The Lovely Bones” will run at Z-PAC Theatre from 10-26 May, with tickets priced between $16.50 and $27.50.

The focus of this podcast was to explore the methodology about why it’s important for us to exercise and to keep moving to be able to live the best life that we want to live and stay healthy.

Ali, explained the philosophy of movement and why it’s important for us to move.

“I always say to most people, the less you do, the less you do. For example, when you wake up, pick up your phone and then you lie on the couch or you turn your TV on and you live a stagnant lifestyle, you then will continue that lifestyle for the rest of the day,” Ali said.

“It’s very hard to push yourself but, the more you move the

more you want to move as the endorphins are raised and the better you feel the more you want to do.”

“When we want to make change it’s a fear of stepping away from our comfort routine into a new routine, which is largely the contributing factor why we don’t end up doing it.”

“Being comfortable feels easy and being comfortable is easy.”

“As soon as you step outside of your comfort zone, you’re walking into a place of the unknown and so that’s not always a great feeling, it’s is scary, but that’s where you grow.”

Most people start the gym in the New Year and they go hard, then they dwindle to three days, two days, one day and then eventually we don’t see them again.

“Rather than doing everything at

a thousand percent maybe creating a program where we can routinely train and we eat well during the week. Slowly decrease alcohol so that if we’re not doing it perfectly, we don’t have to fail.”

“Moderation and sustainability are key.”

“Everyone is too busy. We’re all too busy until we don’t have the health to be busy anymore.”

“While we put everyone else first, we put our kids first, our friendships first, our work first and put all our energy into everything else, we are letting our own health subside until we can’t do that any longer.”

“Well, health is wealth and I think it’s difficult sometimes when you’re in the grind, particularly if you’re both working, you’ve got young kids and all the rest.”

Cr Paul Truscott appointed Fraser Coast Deputy Mayor

CR PAUL Truscott has been appointed Deputy Mayor for the Fraser Coast Regional Council.

Cr Truscott said he was honoured to be taking on the role again after having previously served as Deputy Mayor for a year from March 2022 to March 2023.

“The Fraser Coast is a dynamic, rapidly growing region which brings a range of challenges and opportunities for Council and the community,” he said.

“As a Council, we are committed to providing focused service delivery, maintaining financial

sustainability, effectively managing and maintaining our assets, and planning for the future.

“I am eager to contribute my skills, experience, and passion as Deputy Mayor. I look forward to working diligently alongside all Councillors and staff to foster a positive and productive work environment.

“I am ready and excited for the opportunity to serve our community once again in this capacity, and I look forward to working closely with the Mayor and all my Council colleagues to build better communities together.”

THE FRASER Coast, like many regions across the country, grapples with the silent epidemic of mental health problems.

In our region, one in four will have a mental health issue.

Symptoms can be variable, ranging from poor sleep, loss of enjoyment, fatigue, anxiety, avoidance or other nonspecific physical symptoms, however, they can significantly impact one’s quality of life.

Often, these symptoms develop gradually, with them being dismissed or overlooked until they escalate.

Regular screening promotes self-awareness and empowers individuals to seek help proactively. Early identification through screening facilitates timely access to support and treatment, potentially averting more severe outcomes.

Suicide rates among our men in the Wide Bay region are double the national average. Individuals are the best mental health screeners in our community. It might be your good friend, a sporting teammate, a work colleague or a family member. You can be one that notices

a change in behaviour and you can be the one who asks “Are you okay?”.

Integrating screening into routine doctor’s check-up appointments is paramount.

TREVOr Franklin, or Trev as he is better known, was born in Victoria in the 1940s alongside two brothers, to a working-class family and comes from a long line of brass moulders.

He never learnt the craft himself and in hindsight wishes he had.

Brass Moulders typically worked in Foundries or large engineering companies crafting moulds for molten metal.

He remembers his childhood as being good fun and he has many great memories.

Trev may not remember his first job but has no problem remembering his first car which was an FJ Holden and remains vivid right down to the number plates.

It has now been over three decades since Trev settled in Hervey Bay and at the time jobs were scarce.

Recognising a void, he ventured into environmental horticulture, evolving into a self-taught ‘greenie’, later he got the necessary qualifications.

Before long, a friend from the former Hervey Bay Tourism Bureau roped him into assisting with the coordination of local events such as the Whale and Seafood Festivals and the Yag’ubi World Music Festival, which celebrated culture, arts, and music.

Regrettably, this particular event now exists solely as a fond memory.

Trev frequently advertised upcoming events on the local community radio station, Fraser Coast FM 107.5, so, it was no surprise when he started to volunteer at the station.

Trev now sits behind the mike in the studio and presses the buttons and has been doing so for about fifteen

years starting with his own show ‘Friday Night in the Swamp’. He has interviewed many people over the years, but his top interview was with Sonny Landreth, an American blues guitarist known for his slide guitar skills.

Trev says, “I enjoyed talking to him immensely as I had just been to New Orleans and seen him perform at a festival. We shared our experiences of New Orleans, Louisiana, and its musicians, and connected over a mutual passion for music”.

Nowadays, Trev’s show, dubbed “Community Chest,” airs on Thursday mornings from 9 am to noon. During the show, he engages with various community members, politicians, and leaders to discuss regional affairs and includes a blend of new and classic tracks.

Mayor George Seymour is a regular guest on his show.

A little-known fact about Trev is that he used to love to run and entered fun runs and marathons around the region. His final event was the Hervey Bay-Maryborough Marathon, sponsored by the late Con Souvlis.

Commencing outside Souvlis’s shop in Torquay, the race culminated at the Tinana athletics track.

Trev says, “If you thought it was boring to drive the road to Maryborough and back, try running it”.

He has done about a dozen marathons in total and says it was as much mental as it was physical.

Due to poor health in recent years, Trev can no longer compete.

Over the years, music has become another avenue of expression for Trev, evident in his radio playlists and

personal endeavours like learning the mandolin and joining Mansong, a singing group that fosters camaraderie among men of many ages.

The group meet on a Monday night at the Scout Hall and new faces are always welcome.

Trev enjoys spending time with his partner and says that his perspective on life has deepened since experiencing heart failure, leading to open-heart surgery.

This was initially discovered during a hospital visit for a hip replacement, the recovery spanned about five months. Now, Trev is happily back at the station, immersing himself in what he loves most.

Through life’s trials and triumphs, Trev imparts a simple message: don’t wait to do things that you love, seize the moment, for time waits for no one.

From Plant to PlateSeed Library launched

FRASER Coast residents and community groups can now borrow seeds from their local library branch following the launch of the ‘Fraser Coast Seed Library - From Plant to Plate’ project.

Fraser Coast Regional Council Executive Manager Community and Culture Joyce Chorny said library members could take home seeds to help grow their own gardens and then donate seeds back once their plants have grown.

“Plant to Plate seeds are, where possible, organic, openpollinated, and not genetically modified,” she said.

“Borrowers will be encouraged to help us grow the Seed Library by harvesting seeds from mature plants and donating them back to the library to share with others in the community.

“The project is about encouraging community resilience and engagement at a crucial time with the increasing cost of living pressures on families.”

The ‘From Plant to Plate Seed Library project’ is funded by a $50,000 Public Libraries Strategic Priorities Grant and is proudly funded and supported by the Queensland Government and State Library of Queensland.

Ms Chorny said the Seed Library launch was a key element of the Hervey Bay Library Reopening Party, which also included performances from well-known personalities dirtgirl and scrapboy from ABC TV, and children’s author and musician Deano Yipadee.

“The Hervey Bay Library Reopening Party was a celebration of the library’s transformation and a way to express our gratitude to residents for their patience during the six months we operated out of a temporary pop-up facility while the renovations were underway,” she said.

“Along with a new roof and air conditioning system, our library now offers an improved layout, wayfinding signage, a dedicated Children’s Library,

a Toy Library, and a Digital Experience Zone complete with great spaces for study and reading.

“We greatly appreciate the support from the Queensland Government, who provided a $1.5 million Works for Queensland grant for the roof replacement works and more than $664,000 in grants through the State Library of Queensland.”

Adrian Tantari said, “It’s great to see the library restored to its former glory, thanks to a $1.5 million State Government Grant, bringing back to the people a beloved facility, it’s all part of building a better Hervey Bay.”

About us

Torbay Lifestyles and Care Limited (Torbay) is a medium sized community based, not for profit organization, that has been providing aged care services to the Hervey Bay community for over forty years.

Torbay currently manages a 134-bed residential home, 158 independent living villas, and employs more than 250 employees and volunteers from the local community. Torbay is also the proud owner of Torbay Constructions Pty Ltd, who are responsible for the on-site building program as well as successfully completing several large external projects in the local community.

The Role

Torbay invites nominations for two (2) Non-Executive Directors on our Board of Management, who will support strategic leadership, manage risk, and provide organisational oversight and governance. We are seeking nominations from suitably qualified and/or experienced individuals to fill the Director vacancies for a three-year term, with the possibility of extension. We particularly encourage people from diverse groups to apply.

The voluntary role will require attendance at 11 Board meetings per year. In addition, Board workshops may be scheduled from time to time as required and Board members also serve on at least one Board Committee.

Our Board is highly valued for their contribution to ensuring the vision, mission, and strategic direction of the organisation are aligned and that all governance standards are met. A position on our board provides a genuine opportunity to contribute to the wider community and genuinely make a difference for the better in the lives of older people.

Eligible applications will be required to undertake a satisfactory National Police Check, and hold a current Directors ID.

Directors are paid a small monthly honorarium to cover the costs of undertaking this position.

SELECT A BUILDER

Once you have chosen your new home, your builder will prepare the contract.

SUPPLY VARIATIONS TO THE BUILD CONTRACT

Let us know if there are any variations to the contract as it can impact the valuation, loan approval and funds required. Any variations not included in the loan approval will likely need to be paid by you.

SETTLEMENT AND PAYMENT

If land is included, the funds will be released for the land to settle. You will need to pay any shortfall prior to the lender releasing funds. Your contribution is always requested upfront to ensure the funds are processed.

Builders permit pack - We coordinate with the builder to get the required permit pack for the lender prior to construction starting.

HAVE YOUR DEPOSIT HANDY

Any variations along the way that were not included in the loan or are agreed to post loan approval will need to be covered by you and paid directly to the builder. Construction can be a long process, but your settlement coordinator will guide you through each stage, help with any discrepancies and liaise with the lender for progress payments to be made.

LODGE APPLICATION

We gather all your lending documents and lodge your application. We will also advise if you may be eligible for a First Home Owners Grant and talk you through applying for it.

PROGRESS PAYMENT

When construction begins you will receive an invoice from the builder, these are also referred to as “progress payments”. You forward this to your settlements coordinator straight away to arrange payment for the builder.

Some lenders have their own progress payment forms and others allow you to just sign the builders invoice. A valuation/ inspection is always required at the base and final stage, and in some cases, at other stages depending on the price of the build.

FINAL PROGRESS PAYMENT

When nearing the end of construction, allow time for the final payment as it can take longer to process while the lender organises a final valuation. You will also need to provide a copy of the Certificate of Occupancy and Building Insurance.

We will work with you and the builder to set a handover date.
