The elections are over and it’s time to move ahead together

WITH the recent conclusion of the local government elections, it is crucial for the community to come together and support those who have been elected. Local government holds a significant influence over our day-to-day lives, arguably more so than any other level of governance. From maintaining roads and parks to overseeing zoning regulation, the decisions made by local officials directly shape the quality of life within our communities.

It is imperative that we set aside any preconceived political notions and unite behind our newly elected representatives to ensure the best outcomes for our region.

The aftermath of elections often sees a divide among constituents, with some celebrating victory while others feel disheartened by the results.

Dwelling on past differences or holding onto

There were people with walking sticks, frames, crutches and carers trying to get in but having to wait 30 plus minutes to get in the door. I did get to the door at around 5.50pm where the Electoral Official told us the doors will close at 6pm on the dot to which some people at the end of the queue just left and the rest of us waiting fearful of a

fine for not voting.

I finally got in and presented my Electoral Commission card to be scanned, no it’s not working so was manually logged (no wonder it was all taking so long) finally I cast my votes and couldn’t see the ballot boxes as the room was now packed with people as the doors were closed.

Upon finding the boxes, one for Councillor, one for Mayor, I had to unfold my papers to see which paper was which as there was no colour coding on the boxes ie. yellow & white but more importantly there was no Official guarding the boxes.

outdated political idealism serves no constructive purpose. Instead, we must shift our focus towards collaboration and cooperation, recognising that the success of our region relies on a collective effort.

Rallying behind those who have been entrusted with public office is not about blind allegiance or uncritical support. It is about understanding the importance of working together towards common goals and holding our representatives accountable for their actions.

Constructive engagement, informed dialogue, and active participation in local governance are essential components of a healthy democracy.

Moreover, embracing a spirit of unity and cooperation fosters a conducive environment for progress and innovation.

There were a lot of very justified angry people at this polling booth and I suggest anyone else with the same gripe send a clear message to the Electoral Commission, just imagine if they had to manage a Federal Election!

Voting Queues

Horrendou

Dear Editor,

I live in Hervey Bay with my husband, we tried voting around the middle of the day at the high school on Old Maryborough Road, but the queue was enormous, and in

engaged and supportive community, they are better equipped to make informed decisions that reflect the diverse needs and aspirations of their residents. By fostering an atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding, we can cultivate a sense of shared responsibility for the well-being of the Fraser Coast.

In this post-election period, let us transcend partisan divides and focus on what unites us: the desire for a prosperous and thriving community. Regardless of political affiliations, we all share a common interest in building a better future for ourselves and future generations.

As we move forward, let us commit ourselves to supporting our elected officials, holding them to account, and actively contributing to the advancement of our region. Together, we can create a brighter and more inclusive future for all.

the sun and by the comments didn’t seem to be moving along.

We waited until 4pm thinking queues would have shortened, and went to the nearest voting station in Yarralee High School.

We are 80 years old and were made to wait for one whole hour in the full sun and nowhere to sit, only to find as we finally got inside the building that they had run out of voting papers!

To add insult to injury we watched Division 5 voters steadily move forward and be processed while we waited and waited.

There was only one person checking our names and issuing voting papers for our queue!

The queue was almost as long when we left at 5pm.

I am disgusted with the inability of AEC to adjust the voting staff and capabilities to accommodate the fast growing population in Hervey Bay.

Please note my disgust at my husband and I being treated in such a shabby manner.

Sincerely

Jean Bowen – Eli Waters

Has there been any thought or planning into the problem of housing these employees?

I imagine there will be workmen’s dongas during the construction but once completed where are the employees going to live?

At present, the rental opportunities are non existent and any available rentals are exorbitantly expensive.

Will the caravan parks become permanent workers’ accommodation?

Not good for the loyal family and caravan fraternity or is the focus only on high end tourism.

What is the plan for the major disruptions such as noise and dust to the whole of Torquay, the Esplanade and existing businesses/post office once the construction starts?

Has there been any soil testing done? The site is all sand so the foundations will have to be enormous especially factor in underground car parks.

Also, the area has a lot of

groundwater and springs, the street behind the Esplanade is Freshwater Street, a no brainer for why it was given this name. Indigenous Butchulla would know this.

Maybe the car park might end up being the swimming pool.

What is the timeframe for completion once started?

Given the fact that builders have huge problems with supply of materials, this could stretch out way beyond the completion date.

Library Wildlife Talk for April

It’s something we do every day yet barely ever think about when we turn on our taps - the logistics of our water supply.

Some of us know our water comes from Lenthalls Dam, located off the Bruce Highway north-west of Maryborough, but how clean, fresh water arrives at our houses, remains a mystery, shrouded in fog,

The April Library Wildlife Talk will enlighten the community on the mechanics of our urban water supply.

The Fraser Coast Branch of Wildlife Queensland has invited an expert in this field, Annie Newbery, from the Fraser Coast Regional

Council’s Water and Waste Services team to clarify each step of an involved procedure producing clean water, essential to a community’s health.

Annie is an environmental scientist with 20 years of experience in water and waste utilities and has a passion for conservation and sustainability. With increasing temperatures, our need for water will increase significantly, and this truism is what Annie is concerned with.

Her talk will be held at the Hervey Bay Library on April 19. The talk will run from 1pm to 2pm. For bookings, phone the Library on 4197 4220 or book on the Council’s website on Eventbrite.

Unwanted development

21 stories. Why are the developers advertising in newspapers and on Channel 7 such stories when Council have not disclosed when the behind doors meeting will resolve this unwanted matter?

Council have not changed height limits as far as the public is aware.

We need to be wary of unwanted developers in the Bay. Let’s hope sense prevails.

New website the ‘go-to guide’ for local events info

THE NEW Fraser Coast Events website will be the community’s go-to guide for everything that is happening across the region, providing a single source of information about local events.

Fraser Coast Regional Council Executive Manager of Economic Development and Tourism Justine Cooper said the new website –frasercoastevents.com – was a collaboration between Council and Fraser Coast Tourism and Events.

“From festivals to music gigs, art exhibitions to markets, it’s all covered on the Fraser Coast Events website,” she said.

“The new online platform combines information from a range of sources including the Our Fraser Coast website, the Australian Tourism Data Warehouse and ticketing platforms to provide the most convenient and exciting way to experience the region and find out about events.

“Residents and visitors can use the website in a way that best suits them by searching through different categories, shortlisting events and creating alerts for events they like.

“Event organisers can submit their events for listing and publishing on the website for free, providing a great new

promotional tool to get the word out about their events.”

Fraser Coast Tourism and Events General Manager Martin Simons said the goal of the joint project between FCTE and Council had been to launch “a single source of truth” to all events being staged on the Fraser Coast.

“With the rich communitydelivered events program already in place, the Fraser Coast Events website will provide a valuable marketing tool for event organisers and real-time listings keeping visitors and locals informed on what’s on and what’s coming up,” he said.

Ms Cooper said Council’s aspiration was to “enhance Fraser Coast’s reputation as an event-friendly destination”.

“There are so many fantastic events happening right throughout the Fraser Coast and this new website will bring information about them into one place, helping to maximise the economic and social benefits,” she said.

“The platform will continue to evolve with future opportunities to write and publish articles and add resources to make presenting and promoting events even easier.

Traffic lights to be installed at busy Bay intersection

WORK to install traffic lights and upgrade the roads and footpaths around one of the busiest intersections in Hervey Bay will kick off in early April.

Fraser Coast Regional Council Infrastructure Services Director Davendra Naidu said the intersection of Boundary Road, Robert Street and Hughes Road serviced three schools and three childcare centres, with give way signs on Robert Street and Hughes Road.

“The four-way intersection is particularly busy around school drop off and pick up times, with the upgrade needed to improve traffic flow and make this area safer for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists,” he said.

“Local contractors Kirbro Contracting Pty Ltd have been on site since January doing water main relocation works, which are expected to be completed in the next couple of months.

“Kirbro has also successfully tendered for the traffic signalisation and road widening works, which will be completed in early 2025.

“These works will include excavation and earthworks, road and pavement construction, new kerb and

channel, concrete footpath and stormwater drainage construction, traffic lights installation, asphalt pavement and surfacing, as well as line marking, street lighting, signage and turfing.

“The new intersection will be more than twice as wide as the existing road and will cater for the future growth of the Fraser Coast.”

Mr Naidu said Robert Street would be closed at the intersection with Boundary Road during the school holidays (from 29 March to 14 April) as part of the water main relocation works.

“There will be changed traffic conditions around the intersection over the next 12 months while the traffic signalisation and road

upgrade works occur,” he said.

“Two-way traffic will still be permitted for Boundary Road with traffic control used during certain components of the works, while Robert Street and Hughes Road will be changed to a one-way traffic arrangement near the intersection at key times during the project.

“We appreciate that these works will cause some inconvenience while underway, but the end result will be a safer intersection and improved travel times.

“Council is committed to planning for the future and investing in high-quality public infrastructure to keep pace with growth, and that’s what this project seeks to achieve.”

Bay Aquatic Centre upgrades are underway

WORK is underway on the first stage of a long-term upgrade to the Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre.

Fraser Coast Regional Council Community and Culture Executive Manager

Joyce Chorny said the initial focus would be on the 25-metre pool area, which would be closed over the next six months while the works occurred.

“The Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre opened in 1988 and the upgrades are designed to cater for our community needs and aspirations over the next 40 to 50 years,” she said.

“The initial works will include new changerooms and a new enclosure for the 25-metre pool, a refurbishment of the existing plant room and a new backwash tank and chlorine spill tank in the service yard.

“This first stage will also lay the groundwork for future stages with the construction of a new lagoon pool plant room and the laying of pipes to service this pool and a future zero depth splash pad, as well as the construction of new chemical storage, a lifeguard station and general storage.

“The upgrades are about improving the aquatic centre’s safety and reliability and

ensuring it meets modern standards.”

Member for Hervey Bay Adrian Tantari said the Miles Government was investing more than $3.5 million towards the $4.1 million project through its Local Government Grants and Subsidies program.

“This first stage will give a much-needed refresh to the 25m pool, new changerooms and some necessary works in the background that means we can enjoy it for decades to come.”

Ms Chorny said the 50-metre pool and the heated program pool would remain open during the first stage of the upgrade with the current works timed to occur in the cooler months to minimise the

disruption to swimmers.

“How and when future stages of the Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre Masterplan roll out will depend on available funding within Council’s budget and what grants are available from other levels of government,” she said.

Ms Chorny said Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre multi-entry pass holders would have the expiry date on their passes extended due to the works.

Local group connecting local businesswomen

BIZIWOMEN Connect

Fraser Coast, is a vibrant local women in business group committed to nurturing connections and offering support to businesswomen.

Established by Kylie Hunt in 2022, this initially sought to create a welcoming and supportive environment for local females, many of whom work from home or in smallscale offices.

“We identified a gap for a community where women could meet, network, and expand their enterprises. Over time, we’ve broadened our scope to include a deeper level of support, particularly focusing on mental health,” Kylie said.

“As we’ve grown, we’ve heard compelling stories from

women in business struggling with mental health challenges, emphasising the need for a supportive community.”

“In response to this BiziWomen Connect Fraser Coast has shifted its focus to actively address mental health issues faced by our members.”

“Our events are more than business networking; they also serve as a platform for open conversations about mental health, providing a safe and empathetic space for women to share their experiences.”

“We believe that tackling mental health obstacles is an integral part of empowering women in business.”

“By sharing our commitment to mental health support, we hope to inspire other women to prioritise their well-being and

seek assistance when needed.”

The group run monthly events on different topics within the health and wellbeing space to assist all women in business.

“These sessions are limited to 25 people, with majority of them being free. We have guest speakers from all different backgrounds and a different theme each month.”

“Within the group the women share insights into their business running skills, seek help for any challenges they may be facing or simply just to have someone to talk to.”

“A lot of the ladies work from home, so the group serves as a vital support system for them.”

A YOUTH festival, fishing competition, performing arts workshops, and a yoga class are among the free activities planned for Youth Week on the Fraser Coast in April.

Fraser Coast Regional Council Director of Strategy, Community and Development Gerard Carlyon said Council was teaming up with local youth services and agencies to host an exciting line-up of free events during Youth Week - Sunday 7 April to Saturday 13 April.

“Youth Week is all about celebrating 12 to 25-yearolds and the role they play in sustaining healthy, vibrant, inclusive and connected

communities,” he said.

“This year’s activities on the Fraser Coast are a combination of exciting new events as well as popular events from previous years.

“For example, the Basement Series is a collaboration with the Macabre Theatre Company offering free performing arts workshops, with those attending all five workshops given the chance to be part of a concluding performance.

“Other new events this year include a fishing competition in Burrum Heads, a science workshop and a yoga class.

“The activities have been organised through partnerships

Fraser Coast Youth Week events include:

between Council’s Community Engagement and Cultural Services teams, along with a range of community service providers.

“By co-ordinating these activities, we show our youth that they are important to us, they are valued, and they make a valuable contribution to our communities.

“The events are also an opportunity to hear what they have to say about the world around them and their aspirations to ensure that the region is the place they want to live, work and play.”

Simone sets out on epic transformational journey

LOCAL mum Simone Horne is gearing up for the ICN Bodybuilding Competition on May 4th and 5th and the Brisbane Classic Show on May 19th.

In both competitions she will compete in the Sports Model and Fitness Model categories.

Simone said, the journey is about challenging herself, pushing her limits mentally, and fostering self-discipline and structure.

“I embarked on this path for personal growth and to inspire the children I mentor to embrace challenges and activities outside their comfort zones.”

“My daily routine has undergone significant changes, starting with a preseason to dip my toes in the water before fully committing to the competition.”

“I am a full-time mum and my kids are very much a part of this journey; they train with me and sometimes eat the food I eat.”

“This not only sets a positive example for them but also ensures our family’s schedule is well-structured.”

Despite a calendar packed with endless responsibilities, her own businesses, kids and their sports activities Simone

said the absence of downtime is surprisingly fulfilling.

“My diet shifts between a build phase, where I consume plenty of clean carbohydrates, to a shred phase, characterised by the same foods but in smaller quantities.

“This regimen has been my constant, emphasising the temporary nature of competition physique.”

“I’ve been eating the same foods for over thirty-nine weeks.”

According to Simone, it’s crucial to understand that maintaining a competitionready body year-round isn’t

sustainable or healthy.

“Post-competition, it’s important to gradually increase your food intake to return to a more balanced state.”

“Victory isn’t my ultimate goal, it’s the personal development and experiences gained along the way.”

“I’m keen on instilling this growth mindset in my children, showing them the value of perseverance and selfimprovement.”

“Overall, this journey has made me healthier and more disciplined, embodying the lifestyle changes I hope to pass on to my children.”

Anglicare helping clients foster social connections

FEELING socially connected is important for older Queenslanders as it can reduce feelings of loneliness, provide independence, and create a sense of belonging and connection to the community and their peers.

The emotional benefits of being socially and physically active can have a positive effect on physical health.

Anglicare Southern Queensland offers a range of engaging activities tailored to clients’ interests and abilities that are provided at day respite centres, social activities and groups, exercise and wellbeing classes and bus outings. From live music and dancing, crafts and scenic drives; clients can connect with others and remain physically active while staying in their local area.

The services also enable carers to take a break and recharge their batteries with peace of mind; while giving clients the opportunity to spend their day in a way they enjoy, whether that is building friendships, participating activities or simply relaxing.

Anglicare Southern Queensland Group Manager Home and Community, Sue Montgomery, said it was important that carers take time out for themselves so they can continue to provide quality

care to their loved ones.

“We can provide experienced qualified Anglicare staff, nursing and care support workers who will ensure the social, emotional, cultural and spiritual needs of the person you are caring for are met, with respect for their dignity, selfworth and individuality,” Ms Montgomery said. A client’s family member said “The respite centre gives mum what we cannot give – six hours of mental stimulation, time with people similar to herself in age and health. A safe and happy environment where she feels and is, independent from us.”

“Regardless of the activity, we always have a tonne of fun and

I go home feeling great,” says Kath, an Anglicare Southern Queensland Social Group client.

Anglicare Southern Queensland’s day respite, social support and lifestyle services are available to clients through a range of government funded packages and programmes, depending on your location and circumstances. They also offer fee-for-service.

New Girls Can Ball Basketball Program

LAUNCHED in June

2023, Girls Can Ball is a program created by Wide Bay Basketball, an initiative of The Alley Oop Project Pty Ltd is a locally family owned, independent and not-forprofit organisation.

The program has been solely created to focus on the growth of girls’ youth basketball.

In 2024, they are continuing and extending their program to girls (U12yrs & 13yrs to 16yrs) and adult women. Their aim is to develop basketball skills, promote positive core values and enhance self-esteem, health and well-being, and mental health through the program.

Ashik Naidoo, Director and Co-Founder said, “Our coaches will teach players of all positions, levels and abilities to play smart basketball, be great teammates, and to become leaders on and off the court.”

“The ‘Girls Can Ball’ Program was created to empower and encourage girls to participate in organised basketball.”

“We found a gap for adult

women too and have since developed a fun and social training program where adult women can learn about the sport of basketball, develop new friendships, and improve their health and well-being, as well as their mental health.”

“Due to the lack of an all-girls and adult women basketball coaching and

training program in our local area, it is hard for girls and adult women in which they can experience an atmosphere where they can play, compete, and participate in a league or competition amongst themselves.”

“Girls and adult women can join our affiliated Crocs Basketball Club Girls Can Ball Teams and compete and participate in the local 5 on 5 competition post program.”

“We endeavour to continue to build a great culture for girls’ youth and adult women basketball in our community.”

“We created this program because we have a vision of giving all females in our community the proper platform they deserve in a sport that they can grow to love.”

“Our goal is to empower and inspire females to grow physically and mentally as we enlighten them to realise their full potential both on and off the court.”

Graduate goes back to uni as nursing lecturer

GROWING up in the Wide Bay region, Emily Nicol never anticipated that one day she would lecture at university.

Completing a university degree was “unheard of” in her extended family. Studying a university subject while still at high school was also not the norm. So she decided to do both.

Now an Associate Lecturer in Nursing Science at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Fraser Coast campus and working as a Registered Nurse in critical care, Mrs Nicol says she has come full circle since being one of the first students at Gympie High to enrol in UniSC’s Headstart program.

“At the time, having the opportunity through Headstart to complete university-level study while still at school was a new concept, but I decided to take up the challenge in Year 11 and enrolled in a first-year Nursing Science subject at UniSC’s Gympie campus,” she said.

“I come from a low socioeconomic background, most of our family did not graduate high school, let alone complete a degree.

“The Headstart program offered so many insights and showed me I could do this. It was a tough learning curve, but it was inspirational. I became the first in my family to go to university.”

“I now have the pleasure of

teaching that same first-year course I completed as a Headstart student.

Though my teaching, I also get to share with students my skills and real-world insights gained through my work in emergency nursing and previous rural nursing experience.” A lightbulb moment during a shift at a local hospital inspired Mrs Nicol to expand her career focus to include lecturing at university and to also undertake post-graduate study.

“Clinically, I get to care for vulnerable patients and educate the wider community, and academically I get to support students to do their

best – it is the best combination.”

Currently studying a Master of Nursing in Acute Care, Mrs Nicol has plans to complete a PhD that will investigate ways to support students and other registered nurses to uphold patient safety through the clinical placement journey.

UniSC Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Helen Bartlett, said Mrs Nicol’s journey from Headstart student to lecturer proved the power of self-belief – and the transformative opportunities offered by regional universities.

IN AUSTRALIA, the allure of comfort and convenience often propels us into a whirlwind of busyness.

Our days are packed with tasks and obligations, as we’re convinced that perpetual occupation is the gateway to success and fulfilment.

I understand this and I am also constantly seeking a balance in this relentless cycle.

Yet, amidst our pursuit of productivity, we often overlook the paramount aspect of our lives – our health.

Regardless of how absorbed we are in our bustling schedules, our well-being should always take precedence.

While we may feel invincible amid the chaos, the truth is our health can swiftly deteriorate without proper care.

Exercise is one area where our hectic lifestyles frequently take a toll. We convince ourselves that there’s no time to work out, prioritising deadlines and commitments over physical activity.

But what good are our achievements if we lack the health to relish them? Regular exercise isn’t just about staying fit; it’s an investment in our

long-term well-being and happiness.

Similarly, our dietary habits significantly impact our overall health. When time is scarce, it’s tempting to opt for convenience foods, but these quick fixes often compromise our health. Prioritising

nutritious, home-cooked meals allows us to nourish our bodies and fortify ourselves against illness and disease.

Furthermore, the constant rush of our lives affects our mental and emotional wellbeing. Racing from one task to another leaves little room for relaxation and self-care. While

we may believe we’re being productive, in reality, we’re merely exhausting ourselves.

It’s time for a perspective shift – recognising that our health is our most valuable asset. No level of busyness or productivity is worth jeopardising our well-being. By dedicating time to exercise, healthy eating, and carving out moments for relaxation and self-care, we can attain a healthier balance in our lives.

Let’s not forget that our priorities can swiftly realign in the face of illness or injury.

What once seemed crucial – deadlines, meetings, commitments – suddenly diminishes compared to the fundamental desire for good health.

Let’s not delay in focusing on what truly matters. Let’s prioritise our health today, making gradual changes to avoid adding to our burdens and becoming overwhelmed, so we can continue thriving tomorrow.

Rethinking Priorities: Balancing Busyness and Health

THE LIVEWELL Hervey Bay podcast recently sat down Tanya Stevenson, CEO of Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre (HBNC).

The HBNC operates across four sites with over 30 programs, 68 staff members and 381 volunteers.

They have five service streams which include multicultural, children/family/youth, aged/ inclusion, enterprise/development, and operations.

“Organisation-led programs are government funded to deliver a specific project that they’ve already set up for us to deliver, like maybe a counselling service or a transport service,” Tanya said.

“But the best outcomes come from our community-led programs and our Pitch Nights, they’re the ones where we really get great ideas from the community.”

“They’re grassroots ideas with local community members banding

together to then create some social change.”

“That’s where the neighbourhood centre and most neighbourhood centres try to sit. We always try and connect with community led initiatives before then just running off and doing something. So organisational led always has a place.”

“You need professional services, qualified people for certain roles, but a lot of the time informal support is actually a lot more impactful when you can get a group of community members to bring other people together to make change”.

“We have 127 neighbourhood centres in Queensland, so they like to say there’s more neighbourhood centres than McDonald’s in Queensland.”

“We are one of the largest neighbourhood centres in Queensland, I think that is because

we have made such a great connection with the community.”

“Everything that we do has always come from an idea from a community member and we support them to then grow that into a program.”

“This is where Social Shift is a perfect example of that, it’s the community coming and asking for money to get their idea up and running.”

“We have some really great people out there with some great ideas that we can copy. Everything that we’ve done has been from someone else.”

“It’s not really about the money. You don’t always need to wait for money to get things happening.”

“One of our best and my favourite projects is our Read Bears program, it costs us nothing.”

“We started with three pilot schools where they give each year one student a little knitted bear and

the kids then read to that bear every single night.”

“It creates a third person where the kid’s are more likely to read to the bear and the parents are also more likely to be engaged because they got to read to the bear.”

“We now have 18 schools across Queensland and its growing.”

We have a great community here but many new residents struggle to connect and leave within months.

“We have started hosting welcome dinners which helps new residents meet people and get involved with groups to build belonging.”

It is very evident we have a housing crisis her in Hervey Bay and the HBNC have played a great part in helping this.

“This is very much on our radar at the moment, It’s one of our biggest issues.”

“We have many successful outcomes in our community with

multiple people doing really simple things to help address the crisis.”

“The Comfort Kitchen, The Bless Box, The Sleepbus and not to mention the success of the Bay Biggest Sleepout, raising funds to build a van to provide laundry and shower service.”

The Comfort Kitchen feeds approximately 120 people every Wednesday.

“To see the elderly mixed with the families through to the homeless in a nice, safe, happy atmosphere is satisfying.”

“They sit at the large tables and the volunteers serve them like a restaurant. It’s a nice experience for them and those that just cannot afford to be doing that right now.”

A major win for Tanya and Councillor Jade Wellings was changing local laws to allow backyard caravans to be used as temporary accommodation at the

family home.

“Illuminate is about to kick off again. This is our second year of running. And I think it’s one of our most successful programs in engaging our business sector, sharing their knowledge with the general public.”

“Last year we did 100 Days of Innovation and Creativity, we had over 120 workshops delivered in 100 days, and over 1400 people attended those workshops.”

What does Tanya want her legacy to be in many years to come?

“To definitely be where we are at, we’re creating connected communities. We’re making sure that we are connected to the community in everything that we do.”

Vegetation vandals destroy trees along Urraween Road

TWELVE trees have been unlawfully removed along a section of the Mary to Bay Rail Trail at Urraween costing ratepayers about $10,000.

Fraser Coast Regional Council Executive Manager

Open Space and Environment

Max Corte said twelve Eumundi Quandongs have been snapped off at their bases, with the tops left lying on the ground.

“It is so disappointing to see this environmental vandalism occurring on an avenue of trees that was only planted a year ago and we encourage anyone with any information about this incident to contact Council,” he said.

“Council received a positive response from residents to the new trees as they provide shade, habitat for native animals and help beautify the area.

“The Fraser Coast has a beautiful natural environment with a range of unique ecosystems, and this project is part of Council’s Greening the Fraser Coast Strategy and our commitment to plant 100,000 trees by 2030.

“Rehabilitating unauthorised vegetation damage is not only expensive, it takes away funds that could have been used for other community services and

priorities.

“Removing the stumps, supplying replacement trees and reestablishing the trees over the next 12 months is expected to cost about $10,000.”

Mr Corte said under Council local laws, it is an offence to damage vegetation in any way on Council-controlled land without prior approval from Council.

“While we are still in the early stages of an investigation, Council is urging anyone who witnessed the vandalism to contact Council as soon as possible so we can take the appropriate action,” he said.

“Our local laws allow Council to take action by issuing fines, making the offenders replant trees at their expense and referring matters to the courts where warranted.”

If members of the public have any information about vegetation damage that is potentially illegal, they can report it confidentially to Council on 1300 79 49 29.

The Eumundi quandong is a slow growing evergreen species from Queensland and New South Wales rainforest areas that produces delicate sweet-scented cream-coloured flowers which attract birds.

Does the new Town Planning Scheme plan for AI?

AS THE Fraser Coast Regional Council gears up to unveil its town planning scheme in 2025, a pivotal opportunity looms on the horizon—an opportunity to embrace the transformative wave of artificial intelligence (AI) that is set to redefine our future. With the plan poised to chart the region’s course over the next two decades, the absence of a strategy to integrate AI into the fabric of our community could be a glaring oversight.

AI’s impact on society extends far beyond the realms of employment and electric and autonomous vehicles; it promises to revolutionise the very essence of community needs and public infrastructure. The traditional paradigms of city planning and living are on the brink of obsolescence. In less than a decade, the failure to adapt to these changes could render our current models irrelevant. Consider the potential

of AI to streamline traffic management, making our roads safer and more efficient for autonomous vehicles.

Imagine smart buildings that not only reduce energy consumption but also adapt

to the changing needs of their inhabitants. Reflect on the power of AI to enhance public services, from predictive healthcare to personalised education, thereby elevating the quality of life for all residents.

Moreover, the housing market is on the cusp of

a revolution. The future demands flexible living spaces that can accommodate home offices, virtual reality entertainment areas, and more, reflecting the shifting priorities of a digitally native population.

The Fraser Coast Regional Council stands at a crossroads. By integrating AI into the new town planning scheme, it can lead the region into a future where technology and humanity converge to create a more sustainable, efficient, and inclusive community. The time to act is now; the future waits for no one. Let’s not just plan for the next 20 years; let’s envision a future that embraces the full potential of AI, ensuring the Fraser Coast remains at the forefront of innovation and progress.

Cassy Ironside Nature nurtures the soul

CASSY Ironside loves nothing better than being outdoors, soaking up the sights and sounds of nature.

Whether it’s gardening or nurturing native plants, she takes pleasure in observing the diverse array of animals and insects that inhabit our surroundings. Cassy also finds their interactions with each other and with humans fascinating.

Cassy’s had some amazing wildlife encounters, like an Eastern bearded dragon seemingly waving at her— caught on video. Though likely coincidental, it’s happened more than once.

Cassy is the eldest of three girls and was born at Lady Musgrave Hospital in Maryborough forty-seven years ago and has lived in Hervey Bay since she was six months old.

Her parents have lived in the same house in Hervey Bay for all those

years.

Currently, Cassy is staying with them and has lots of great memories from her upbringing in that very house.

She has been busy planting lots of native plants in their garden and learning about their various uses.

During her school years, Cassy describes herself as a good student but very talkative, with a short attention span, and always had that extra bit of energy that she worked off by playing various sports, including, softball, hockey, futsal, soccer, and athletics.

Cassy has also coached most of these sports and started coaching at the age of seventeen. Her involvement in sports provided her with invaluable experiences and some lasting friendships.

When she was younger, Cassy

learned how to bow hunt and would go hunting for feral animals with her mum and dad. She became incredibly good at spotting animals and the experience gave her a whole new awareness of nature.

“Feral animals destroy vegetation and crops and kill livestock, which can have a devastating impact on the farmers,” explains Cassy.

“Feral foxes and cats hunt and kill native birds, insects, reptiles, and mammals, which endangers many species. Reducing feral animal numbers helps protect our native flora and fauna.”

From her early days at McDonald’s to roles in a bakery, dental clinic, and various pharmacy settings Cassy’s passion for nature and wildlife conservation never waned.

Currently, she has three jobs, with one of them feeding her passion.

Riverbend Nature Connections was founded by one of Cassy’s friends and is a venture aimed at fostering environmental awareness through education, native plant cultivation, nature-based workshops, and habitat restoration work.

Cassy says that the best experience of her life was quite a few years ago when she managed to secure tickets to see Sir David Attenborough in Brisbane.

Seeing him live was like meeting her idol and he inspired her to work on preserving nature.

Knowing how much Cassy loves her wildlife, a friend suggested that she join the group Turtles in Trouble.

The group collaborates with Australia Zoo, SeaWorld, marine parks, and other groups to aid sick marine turtles, a cause close to Cassy’s heart.

She also is part of Dunga Derby by Rally for a Cause thanks to her sister and brother-in-law’s encouragement. Cassy enjoys the event’s fun atmosphere and its support for the local charity Rally for a Cause, aiding families in need. This year marks their eighth participation and the event’s tenth anniversary.

Cassy also loves to cook. Desserts and cookies are her thing. She loves her choc chip macadamia cookies.

Who knows, one day soon you might find some lemon myrtle in her cookies. Cassy says, there are so many edible plants so why not use what you’ve got?

Over the next year, Cassy will be helping get Riverbend Connection off the ground and hopes to offer workshops. She wants people to love nature as much as her idol Sir David Attenborough does.

COST OF LIVING IN HERVEY BAY

GOVERNMENT SUPPORT TO LOWER EXPENSES

HOUSING CHALLENGES

IN THE BAY

HOW TO SAVE ON GROCERIES

OUR COMMUNITY Voice
ISSUE SEVEN - PROUDLY SUPPORTED BY PROGRAM SOCIAL SHIFT Making Change Together

The challenges with the cost of living in Hervey Bay

HERVEY Bay, renowned for its tranquil beauty and quality lifestyle, is also challenged by the cost of living as the nation’s population lives faces each day. Despite the attractive environment and peaceful coastline, we enjoy outside the higher populated cities, the region grapples with challenges related to affordability, impacting its residents everyday lives.

From housing to healthcare, education to groceries, Australians face a myriad of expenses that apply strain to household budgets.

Yet, Hervey Bay provides a very positive outlook of growth in a recognised area of more affordability.

This section delves into the various facets of the cost of living issues in our region and explores potential solutions our local community can turn to for support and relief.

One of the most pressing concerns for all Australians is the skyrocketing cost of housing. Major cities like Sydney and Melbourne consistently rank among the world’s most expensive places to live.

The surge in property prices has made homeownership increasingly unattainable for many, particularly younger generations. Renting, too, has become prohibitively expensive, with rental costs consuming a significant portion of household incomes.

Hervey Bay has experienced an unprecedented increase in housing prices and record low levels of rental availabilities. Yet, it is nationally recognised for its affordability and the positive outlook the sector conveys.

Factors contributing to the housing affordability crisis in Hervey Bay include increased pressure on the lack of housing supply, higher population growth rates, low wage growth relative to housing costs, and speculative investment in the property market.

Government initiatives such as first-home buyer grants and affordable housing schemes have provided some relief, but more comprehensive reforms are needed to address this systemic issue.

The Fraser Coast Property Industry Association (FCPIA) have stated it requires a multi-faceted approach to tackle the affordability of housing.

Beyond housing, Hervey Bay residents face escalating costs for essential services such as electricity, water, and telecommunications. Rising utility bills strain household budgets, particularly for low-income families and individuals on fixed incomes.

Governments continue to investigate relief options for residents to reduce their household expenses.

The Fraser Coast Regional Council has implemented initiatives to assist ratepayers that address our cost of living expenses through various support programs and free activities.

The Queensland government has regularly commented on the challenges for the state in relation to the cost of living and our local member, Adrian Tantari, has stated his commitment “to ensure household bills are lowered for Hervey Bay families.”

Access to affordable healthcare is a fundamental concern for most Australians.

While Hervey Bay experiences strong growth in local health services and is now the highest employer sector on the Fraser

Coast, out-of-pocket expenses for medications, specialist consultations, and more specific services can be significant.

Transportation costs, that includes vehicle maintenance and increasing fuel prices, add to the burden of the cost of living in Hervey Bay.

The cost of education, from early childhood through tertiary studies, is a significant financial burden for any family. Most families facing increased expenses for uniforms, textbooks, and extracurricular activities can strain household budgets.

Hervey Bay is fortunate to have a strong reputation for its educational institutions that private school fees are relatively low compared to the major cities.

One of the underrated costs for education associated with our growing young family population is the prospect of school leavers taking on university studies outside of the region.

While we are blessed with a quality tertiary institution of the University of Sunshine Coast campus, families face annual living costs of $20,000-$55,000 for school leavers in undertaking courses outside of our region.

If we add the burden of student loan debts, the cost for a tertiary education can be daunting for many families.

Addressing the cost of living issues in Hervey Bay requires a multifaceted approach involving government intervention, private sector collaboration, and community initiatives.

Policy interventions such as increasing the supply of affordable housing, regulating property speculation, and strengthening consumer protections in essential service markets can help alleviate financial pressures on households.

Additionally, targeted subsidies and welfare support can assist low-income individuals and families in meeting their basic needs.

Household groceries have come under strong scrutiny since the pandemic as we take more notice of the prices on the shelves and our options for feeding a family.

Regional Housing, who develops, manages and facilitates housing and support for people in need with a range of communities and partners, says the number one expense for households is grocery expenses.

Locally vendors, such as Fraser Coast Fresh Produce, provide advice and guidance with your fruit and vegetables bills and ways to save money.

Investments in infrastructure and public transportation are essential to improving mobility and reducing transportation costs locally. Efforts to promote energy efficiency and renewable energy sources can mitigate the impact of rising utility bills while addressing climate change concerns.

The benefits of implementing long-term economic policies that prioritise sustainable growth, and social inclusion will unite our community to address costs. This involves fostering innovation, promoting entrepreneurship, and investing in education, infrastructure, and healthcare to create opportunities for all locals to prosper.

Reforms to the healthcare system, including reducing out-ofpocket expenses and improving access to dental care and mental health services, are crucial for enhancing health outcomes and reducing financial hardship.

The cost of living issues in Hervey Bay represents a complex challenge that requires coordinated action at various levels of government and society. While our region enjoys prosperity and economic growth, many families struggle to make ends meet amid soaring expenses for housing, utilities, healthcare, transportation, and education.

By implementing targeted policies and fostering innovation in key sectors, Hervey Bay can work towards a more equitable and sustainable future where all residents can thrive.

By adopting a holistic approach that addresses the root causes of cost of living issues and prioritises the well-being of our community, Hervey Bay can build a more resilient and inclusive society where everyone has the responsibility to contribute to manageable growth.

Budget Busters

How to save on Grocery expenses

Fraser Coast Fresh Produce at Pialba has been part of the Hervey Bay community for over a decade with the mission of sourcing local quality produce at a great price and providing value for money.

They offer the following advice to save on your fruit and vegetables.

1) Buy in season produce, no point buying a mango in winter, it would cost a fortune because there is none around (and most likely imported) Buy what is readily available in big volumes, freeze it if necessary if you like to use the product all year around; for instance we have loads of people that buy extra cauliflowers in winter, buy a heap and chop it up, that’s then good for a few months in the freezer.

2) Buy in volume, spread the love with your friends, family or neighbours, purchase fruit by the box and get a better price, it might seem like a lot of produce at first but once you divide between everyone you would notice great value for money, for instance bananas loose by the kg would be $1.99, but in a box would be $24 for 15 kg ($1.60 kg) this could be a great saving.

3) Buy the specials, it sounds simple but it really is the best way to make your dollar go further, a lot of stores (including ours) will put certain lines cheap as specials to draw the people in, you would get product for as close as cost prize or even below sometimes.

Animal Desexing Rebate

Council provides an incentive to Queensland Concession Card holders to desex their cats and dogs as part of its responsible pet

ownership program.

Eligible pet owners receive a $100 rebate for dogs and a $50 rebate for cats that have recently been desexed.

The targeted program helps ease the cost of living for those who need the most help.

Queensland Concession Card holders include seniors, people with a disability, carers, sole parents, widows and students.

Cost of Living Relief for Queenslanders

OUR STATE government is acutely aware of the priority our community has for the cost of living being addressed across Queensland.

Premier Steven Miles has recently gone on record in rejecting a new $3.4 billion stadium for the Olympic Games when Queenslanders “are doing it tough”.

The recognition by the Queensland Government is supported by the local Hervey Bay Member, Adrian Tantari, that is committed to helping ease the cost of living pressures and delivering real savings in energy, health, education and employment.

“As a father of three, who raised my family during times of high unemployment, high interest rates and high price increases, I have lived experience of the struggle it takes to pay the rent or mortgage and to keep up with the relentless costs associated with school, fuel and food, and all the other bills that come in,” says Mr Tantari. The state member of parliament is also a member of the Cost of Living and Economics Committee.

He says national cost of living pressures are being felt by all Queensland households and in particular in Hervey Bay, that has one of the lowest social economic populations in the State.

to working with the Miles Government to ensure household bills are lowered for Hervey Bay families, so that they have more money in their pockets.”

An action by the Miles Government has been to increase the royalties on record multinational mining company profits, profits made from the coal from Queensland.

Some of the bill relief measures include:

• Free Kindy – for all. Started 1 January 2024, saving many thousands of dollars to families.

• Fee Free TAFE for all – the State knows the best form of cost of living relief is to have a job. By providing Fee Free TAFE – many can now retrain to set themselves up for work

• Massive energy rebates, $550 for every Hervey Bay household and $1,072 for every senior and vulnerable households – I have been told that for many in Hervey Bay this has eliminated their power bill for the year. These are just a number of the many rebates that can be access by the people of Hervey Bay and the Miles Government has launched the Queensland Savers website so Hervey Bay residents can see what they’re eligible for by visiting www. queenslandsavers.qld. gov.au

The Hervey Bay Housing Affordability Crisis: A Way Forward

IN RECENT years, Hervey Bay, has become a focal point for a significant and concerning shift within the Australian property market. This change has been most profoundly felt in the realm of housing affordability, a crisis precipitated by a perfect storm of economic and social factors that have reshaped the landscape of regional living.

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a notable migration pattern, with a significant influx of individuals and families moving to regional areas such as Hervey Bay.

This surge in demand, coupled with limited housing supply, has led to a significant rise in house prices—up to 75% over the past three years. This sharp increase has not only made home ownership less attainable for many Australians but has also severely tightened the rental market, driving vacancy rates down to below 1%.

The rental market’s strain is further exacerbated by significant rent increases, a direct result of the soaring house prices. This situation has effectively sidelined investors, particularly during the pandemic, as owneroccupiers have come to dominate the market.

Additionally, the region has faced massive delays in building and land supply, contributing to the already critical housing shortage.

President for the Fraser Coast Property Industry Association (FCPIA), Glen Winney,

says it’s a number of factors that need to be considered when reviewing the current situation.

“This confluence of factors has culminated in a dire housing affordability crisis in Hervey Bay. To navigate our way out of this predicament, a multi-faceted approach is required”, says Mr Winney.

“A key component of the solution lies in making investment in the housing market more attractive once again. This involves not only incentivising investors to return but also revisiting and potentially revising regulations surrounding housing development.”

“Exploring alternative housing products is crucial. Increasing housing density and simplifying the development process are steps in the right direction. These measures would not only expedite the provision of new homes but also offer more varied housing options to meet the diverse needs of the community.”

Addressing the housing affordability crisis in Hervey Bay requires concerted efforts from all stakeholders, including government bodies, developers, investors, and the community.

By embracing innovative solutions and fostering a more inviting investment climate, Hervey Bay can begin to alleviate the pressures of this crisis, paving the way for a more sustainable and inclusive future in housing.

Financial Support for Hervey Bay

A

Often it is the stigma or embarrassment of asking for help that hinders the application of a workable budget which leads to financial challenges which may have been avoided by

seeking advice.

Regional Housing is a not for profit organisation that manages emergency, transitional and long term social housing, as well as a range of complimentary support programs, throughout Central and Northern Queensland.

They have an office in Hervey Bay and manage over 200 properties across the Fraser Coast.

Part of the services they provide is financial counselling that helps eligible people address their financial problems through the provision of

information, advocacy and/or negotiation on behalf of the customer.

They also aim to help people build longer term budgeting capabilities, better manage their money and make informed financial decisions.

Regional Housing recognises the cost of living is having a major impact on people within the community and is continuing to rise and spread. People who may not ever have expected to encounter financial hardship are experiencing this crisis and are accessing services for support and assistance.

They have identified top three financial pressure trends within the region we are seeing are; Household bills including groceries, equal second is affordability of rent and or people being in rent arrears as well as Buy Now Pay Later products. They have example of people are paying 70% of their income to rent in the private market, amidst a housing crisis people feel there isn’t long term relief in sight.

“As the cost of living increases people are turning more to the unregulated Buy Now Pay Later products to pay for basic living essentials, this doesn’t take long to become unmanageable

for people and contributes to negatively affecting their financial wellbeing”, says a spokesperson for Regional Housing.

“Financial crisis and hardship is not a standalone issue, it has far reaching effects onto other areas of people’s lives including their physical and mental health, general wellbeing and relationships.”

As Financial Counsellors, they can help people who are experiencing financial difficulty. The organisation can provide a safe confidential space to listen, clarify people’s financial situation, provide information, options, and advocate for people with creditors where appropriate. People are able to make informed decisions about their finances.

“We have seen a surge in demand for our Financial Counselling service with an increase of 83.5% of referrals received in February compared to December for the Fraser Coast and Wide Bay region”, says the spokesperson.

To book an appointment with a Financial Counsellor, you can contact them on 1300 642 123, or email cfc@regionalhousing.org.au or visit their website www.regionalhousing.org.au

Quality, Comfort & Style

From the moment you step inside this master-built home the quality is evident. The oversized front door leads into a light filled living space with high ceilings and large windows. The kitchen is a chef’s delight with quality appliances, soft close drawers, waterfall stone benchtops and butler’s pantry. The open plan design allows the living & dining spaces to flow seamlessly onto the outdoor entertaining area through the two triple stacker doors. The home boasts three bedrooms, master with walk-in robe & large ensuite, contemporary main bathroom and study nook. Car accommodation is taken care of with a double garage. Zoned, ducted air-conditioning ensures the home is comfortable all year round and a ducted vacuum makes cleaning a breeze.

A real feature if this home is the gardens which will please any green thumb with hundreds of fruit trees and flowering plants, water feature, manicured paths and garden shed. For those with a caravan or boat there’s a second driveway and space to park behind the fence line.

Located toward the end of a quiet cul-de-sac, overlooking parkland the home is close to schools, shops, the medical precinct, sporting facilities and transport. It is rare that homes of this calibre come onto the market so arrange your inspection today.
