LiveWell Hervey Bay looks to inform and educate

I WAS fortunate enough to be awarded a grant from the Australian Government’s Department of Social Services – Social Shift Program, which is facilitated by the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre.

The object was to create a ten-part podcast series called LiveWell Hervey Bay.

The ten-part broadcast quality video and audio series, each 40 to 45 minutes in length, will be a first for this region.

The project features experts in their respective fields, engaging in informative interview-style conversations. The video series will be posted on YouTube and each episode will be featured as a dedicated article in the Hervey Bay Advertiser, the first appearing in this issue, breaking down the content and bringing the project to the forefront

Will retail and accommodation near the site have to close due to noise and vehicle movements?

How many tradespeople will be on the site and where will they live if they are not residents in Hervey Bay?

Where will tradespeople park all day or will they be bussed in?

If there are 400 odd luxury live units and 180 odd hotel rooms, where are they going to put roughly 1000 vehicles and some trailers if the complex is fairly full?

Esplanade Development

I, like many thousands of locals am totally against the 21 storey apartment block to be built on the Esplanade.

I believe it will be the beginning of the end of Hervey

of local news.

We wanted this to be informative, engaging, and high-quality content.

The overriding goal was to position LiveWell Hervey Bay as an essential resource for the Hervey Bay community, offering valuable insights and solutions to the multifaceted challenges faced by residents.

I was very fortunate to spend time with some incredible local people, who make such a high level of positive impact on our city.

We looked at Our Aging Community with Kirsti Kee, who holds Senior positions with the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre, Rotary and Fraser Coast Anglican College. Darren Bosley, the President of Fraser Coast Mates talked about Mental Health and Maddie Pyne from the PCYC

Bay as we know it. Once the ball is rolling it will be hard to stop.

I may be selfish but I like Hervey Bay as it is and not turned into another Sunshine Coast, which is still a beautiful place but the traffic gridlock it has takes the pleasure out of visiting.

The same will happen here in 10-15 years time and the Esplanade will be a no-go zone for locals just like Main Street will be in a couple of years time once the Taj Mahal is built.

You will only go there if you had to.

Do the developers care about the houses and apartments on the eastern side of the 21 storey building whose homes will be in the shade from the early afternoon?

I hope the Councillors have thought long and hard about their decision and the consequences of it both for themselves and the people living here.

The only people who will really benefit are the developers, investors and the council.

The rest of us will have a

poorer quality lifestyle. I have never believed in change for the sake of change.

If it’s not broken don’t fix it and Hervey Bay is not broken, not yet at least.

Will all those in favour of the proposed development which one assumes that the owner[s] will expect to be full of paying customers, start a fund for increased beds in hospitals, larger emergency section, more G.P.s. a new shopping centre for the area, current one not close enough, more ‘buses servicing the area, etc.etc. etc.

Pay council for whatever will increase in area, I’m not paying that either, don’t like what my money is used for now.

I am sure that before coming to their acceptance of the proposal they will have thoroughly investigated all

elements attached, not just liking a pretty building.

We all know that, if this is passed, with minutes, there will be so many similar plans, which are sitting in office desks, just waiting, not so patiently for the signal.

I am sad for those who came here or were born here many years ago, thinking to finish their time on earth out of the ‘rat race’ from which I thought I had about 20 years ago.

We know what is out there and also sometimes why?

Feedback from the general public, your worship, and prospective councillors: the rates have been ratcheted up too high.

The fat needs to be trimmed, your remuneration, and the Taj Mahal-like new council buildings.

Local government act 2009 requires that all residents be allowed to be a part of decision-making throughout the 4-year term.

Not a license for our local government to do what it wants, when it wants, or if it

wants.

Your worship, we are not a herd of milking cows, milked for higher yield every year through top-heavy rates.

Good luck to genuine candidates with heart and will for the residents here, including the homeless middle-aged female school teacher who has lost her home and everything, now sleeping in parks and has hit the drink.

I think the intersection at Anne street and Boat Harbour drive is an absolute debacle and disgrace to our council’s decisions.

The amount of our $ they have spent on this?

Only to make the intersection worse for traffic???.

I used to be able to get out of Bruce Street in the morning with no problem, but now because of the traffic jam there could be a line of cars down Anne street and I have to wait until it’s clear or someone let me in.

What tha??

It was never ever that bad until council decided to change it, without consultation with locals???

Eight ways to get jobready in the digital age

FROM online networking to crowdfunding, there are eight key ways for university graduates to open more virtual doors to careers in 2024, according to new business research.

University of the Sunshine Coast business academics published in a paper in the journal Industry and Higher Education identified eight indicators of “readiness for employment” in an increasingly digital world.

Retha de Villiers Scheepers said that while the list appeared commonsense, the competencies could act as a checklist for new graduates entering the workforce.

“Previous studies have shown that university students may be digital natives but they don’t necessarily all know how to use digital tools to boost their employability,” Dr de Villiers Scheepers said.

“The global digital economy has accelerated since the COVID-19 pandemic, with emerging technologies, industry innovations, digitalisation and automation bringing continuous change to workplaces.

“Businesses and organisations across various industries now want digitally competent employees who are immediately productive in hybrid work environments.

Head of Campus Michelle Hay said now that so many of us are spending more time at home, it's never been more important for Fraser Coast locals to build their networks and create connections.

“Effective relationships can open doors and provide introductions to local movers and shakers.”

“Job seekers must seek

The Association was formed in 1995 with 18 members using the facilities and storage space of Australia’s Immigration & Family History Centre. This centre was owned by Janet Reakes and Eileen Johnson.

On the 22nd May 2000 the Association relocated to the Hervey Bay Library in Old Maryborough Road, Pialba.

Volunteers make themselves available to assist researchers and over the years they have created a friendly and informative group willing to assist the community.

The group has gained a reputation Australia wide and overseas for their assistance to those seeking their family history.

Resources of the Association and the Library are combined.

Volunteers of the group are available in the Hervey Bay Family History room six days a week.

They have extensive records

on Microfilm/fiche, CDs and books in the HBFHA room, to help you trace your family's genealogy. These include local newspapers on microfilm and local cemetery records.

Online research tools such as Ancestry, Find My Past, British Newspapers and many more are also available.

The Giant Easter Egg Hunt at the Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens is free and open to anyone from March 29 to April 14.

HBNC CEO Tanya Stevenson said local artists had painted the 1m high giant eggs for the hunt.

Local family takes in NRL Vegas experience

ROUND One of the 2024 NRL Telstra Premiership was taken away from Australia to Las Vegas for the very time this year and a reported 15,000 Aussie’s made the trip to see the historic sporting event.

The chance to visit Allegiant Stadium, just off the famous glitter strip, was an opportunity too good to pass up for thousands of sporting fans, including well-known Hervey Bay businessman Glen Fry and his family.

“We primarily made the decision to go, as Souths are my team and the idea of watching them play in Vegas was too good to pass up. Secondly, we hadn’t been on a decent holiday since pre-covid times so this was a no brainer,” Glen said.

“Once I knew the games were

actually locked in at the end of 2023, I started investigating all the options to make it a great family trip. I’ve been fortunate enough to have been to the United States many times over the years and planning a three-week trip isn’t actually that hard once you have a starting point.”

“We had a rental car for the entire trip so once we landed in LA, we drove to Williams AZ, went to the Grand Canyon, Vegas, San Diego, Santa Monica and then home. One of the best road trips I’ve done and I had my kids with me.”

Glen had seen a few other sports events in America on previous trips, but not with the same intent as this.

“I’ve seen a couple of NFL and Baseball games over the years but

they were purely by chance. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.”

“I honestly didn’t see much of the lead up in Australia but I can tell you there were “a lot” of Aussies on the plane and they were all going to Vegas to watch the footy.”

“I spoke to several on the plane and they all had the same plans we did. Albeit other destinations tagged on, but the catalyst was the same. Their favourite team was playing round one in Vegas and it wasn’t to be missed.”

Once the game day came along, it was an experience Glen and his family will always remember.

“We were surrounded by Aussies. We had a couple of Broncos supporters next to us, who live

“There was a guy from Sydney now living in Utah there with his daughter and they were both so excited. Everyone was so pumped it was just awesome.”

“The event itself was absolutely epic. Apart from an Origin game, I’ve never been to a game like it. The launch of round one in Vegas with about 45,000 Aussies (that’s what I’ve heard) is something I’ll never forget.”

Although the event was a big hit in Australia, Glen didn’t see that same frenzy on the ground

over there.

“Surprisingly we didn’t see much in the way of advertising at all apart from the massive LED signs on the actual stadium that you could see as you drove by.”

“I did catch a segment on FOX sports the day before and the presenter was giving a rundown on the game play.

Kick off, passing, tackles, tries, goal kicks, drop goals etc. He was winding it up as American sports presenters do and I can only assume there was a massive amount of advertising going on before we got to Vegas that we didn’t see.”

“When asked by staff in shops why we were here we

would tell them and honestly most seemed to not know anything about it which I found a little surprising.”

“The ones that did know, had no idea what our game was and thought it was soccer. Then you got into the whole conversation trying to explain the differences between Rugby League and Rugby Union and whatever they thought Rugby was.”

“Listening to my daughter Macie trying to explain who the Rabbitohs were to some random shop assistant, was pretty funny when you think about it.”

THE LIVEWELL Hervey Bay podcast recently sat down with Maddie Payne, a dedicated Youth Program Officer from our local PCYC.

The focus of the conversation was on the various youth programs and opportunities that are being offered in our community, aiming to address the needs and challenges faced by young people today.

The PCYC, or Police-Citizens Youth Clubs, is a pivotal organisation within Queensland, boasting a network of fifty-six clubs throughout the state.

It stands out as a not-forprofit entity that works in close collaboration with the police force, yet it significantly depends on the support and funding from the community to sustain its operations.

This financial backing comes from several sources, including the

proceeds from gym memberships and gymnastics programs, which are vital for the organisation’s ability to serve the youth effectively.

Maddie Payne plays a crucial role within the PCYC, focusing her efforts on tackling the various challenges that confront our young people.

By working directly with the youth, Maddie and the PCYC aim to create a supportive environment that encourages personal growth, resilience, and positive community engagement.

Through their programs, they seek to not only address immediate issues but also to lay down a foundation for a brighter future for the youth in our community.

“The Get Set for Work is targeted at youths aged between 15 to 19 year olds disengaged from school,” Maddie said.

“The program outlines some

major issues youth face including anxiety, undiagnosed conditions, challenging home environments and the lack of basic life skills knowledge.”

“We deliver training over a 10 week period to improve their employability through skills development, work placements and addressing barriers they face.”

How does Maddie keep these kids engaged if they are so disengaged from school, how does she them coming back week after week?

Tick-Tock: Tackling Heart Disease

AN AUSTRALIAN suffers a heart attack every 10 minutes.

Heart disease remains a significant health concern globally, and the Fraser Coast is no exception given our aging population.

February is the month dedicated to raising awareness for heart health and also raising funds for research.

Residents of the Fraser Coast must be proactive to prevent heart disease.

In this article, we will discuss some key aspects of preventing heart disease and maintaining cardiac health.

Many of my patients will come in asking for a heart check or asking for ways to prevent a heart attack.

Heart disease is a predictable illness with preventable risk factors.

By taking proactive measures we can prevent heart disease and hopefully limit the number of interventions required such as medications or surgery.

Diet plays a crucial role in heart disease prevention.

The Mediterranean Diet has been scientifically shown to reduce the risk cardiovascular disease. This is a diet of

fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Consider chasing down a mackerel or some whiting from our waters.

Visit our local markets and buy some in season produce.

Regular exercise is essential for preventing heart disease.

Our region offers a wealth of outdoor activities, whether it be walking along the Urangan Pier or cycling on the Rail Trail.

Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week.

Smoking is one of biggest risk factors for heart disease.

By just quitting smoking, you will halve the risk of having a

heart attack.

Limit alcohol consumption to one or two standard drinks in one sitting and ensure two alcohol free days a week.

Chronic stress can contribute to high blood pressure which is a risk factor for heart disease.

Incorporate stressmanagement techniques into your daily life. Besides exercise, other activity such as meditation, yoga, or engaging in hobbies.

This February, let’s keep our hearts beating. Just like taking your car in for a regular service.

Take this opportunity to schedule a routine appointment with your General Practitioner.

Dependent on your risk factors they will check your blood pressure, measure your weight and arrange some blood tests to assess your heart health. At the end of the day, prevention is better than cure.

PLANS for the 32nd annual Burrum Heads Amateur Fishing Club’s Easter Fishing Competition are ramping up with the competition starting on Good Friday.

Hundreds of locals and visitors converge on beautiful Burrum Heads each year for the three-day event where there’s lots of family fun, random super draw prizes and of course the chance to fish and win, in live and dead weigh-ins.

The Hervey Bay RSL has been a major supporter of the event for the past few years with a Hervey Bay RSL Club Community Grant of $2,000 in 2024, to cover the cost of the club’s liability insurance.

Fletcher, a talented musician and student from Urangan State High School, had a goal in grade 7 which was to get accepted into the school’s ACE Music Excellence class, this he achieved. Now as a senior, he is currently working towards completing his Certificate IV in music.

Franky was born in Hervey Bay and has three older brothers, two younger brothers, and a younger sister. One of his brothers is Jarrod Fletcher, a former Australian professional boxer and world middleweight title challenger who won gold at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

But music was always Franky’s passion. At a very young age, he remembers listening to and learning the music that his mum and dad were into, such as The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, and many other

artists from a wide range of genres.

Franky’s dad Dave played the guitar so taught Franky the basics. Franky also picked up a lot from watching YouTube tutorials.

Vocally he used to take singing lessons with local voice coach Gunilla Myren, but his mum Jasmin says that he has always had a voice for singing and is a natural.

On Franky’s sixteenth birthday, he was gifted a Maton guitar, an Australian brand made from Australian timbers such as bunya, blackwood, and Queensland maple. A most treasured gift. His musical influences range from the lyricism of Pearl Jam to the raw energy of Sublime and Alice In Chains. He loves pretty much anything from the 90’s Grunge/ Alternative era.

Franky began by busking for pocket

money at Pialba Place and sometimes at the Urangan Markets. Then, last year he entered the Hervey Bay Unplugged competition and made it through to the Grand Final. Although he didn’t win, he was proud of himself for getting as far as he did.

Live performances as a solo artist at some of the pubs and clubs in our region followed, and Franky is now being kept busy as a regular performer on the local music gig scene. Franky says, “I don’t get nervous before gigs and performances but look forward to the journey. I love performing and always feel great when I am on stage.”

Another passion of his is filmmaking, nurtured by a love of the soundtracks/scores of some of his favourite movies. He is a huge Quentin Tarantino fan and says that the movie Pulp Fiction stands out

for him. His other favourite directors include David Fincher, Steven Spielberg, and John Hughes. Franky’s top movie soundtrack would have to be from the film Dazed & Confused. Filmmaking has created another avenue for his creative expression. Franky spends almost every waking moment when he is not at school, perfecting his craft, and admits that he is a bit of a perfectionist. His mum Jasmin says that people always comment about his great setlist. It’s predominantly 90’s music like Nirvana, Radiohead, Powderfinger, and Oasis, with some older favourites mixed in there from the likes of Pink Floyd and Cat Stevens. She says that he has great taste in music!

Franky has had the support and mentoring of some of our best local musicians, including Shane Allsop

who has done a bit of duo work with the seventeen-year-old.

Franky is beginning to make a name for himself locally and hopes to build on that momentum by playing more gigs, more venues, and more locations, as well as lifting his social media presence. His next goal will be to complete and polish up his original tracks and record a studio album. He hopes to one day perform at large festivals and shows around the world. Franky has big dreams and with the support and encouragement of his family around him, he will achieve all that he wishes for and so much more.

Hospice Charity Gala to raise valuable funds

FRASER Coast Hospice is calling on community support for their upcoming Hospice Charity Gala on Saturday June 17th.

Held at the Hervey Bay Boat Club and including a three-course meal, raffles and live auctions, the Hospice Charity Gala will assist to raise valuable funds for their ongoing work.

Well known and love loved band Soul City will be performing, allowing guests to dance the night away.

Fraser Coast Hospice, a six-bed purpose-built inpatient facility, embodies a flexible, client and a family-centric model of care.

Established through an initial Federal Government Grant and the generous land donation from the Fraser Coast Regional Council, the hospice stands as a vital component of our local healthcare services.

In communities like Hervey Bay, Hospices fulfill a crucial role by offering compassionate

end-of-life care and support, guiding individuals and their families through one of life’s most challenging phases.

The specialised facility in Hervey Bay combines medical expertise with emotional solace, prioritising pain management, symptom relief, and emotional well-being for those facing terminal illnesses.

Our local Hospice, with its serene, home-like environment, allows patients to spend their final days surrounded by loved ones, enhancing their quality of life and preserving dignity in their passing.

Additionally, it eases the burden on families by providing respite and guidance throughout the journey.

Hervey Bay racing team set for The Mountain!

Motorsport run by local business owners Russell Greaves, Darren Goddard, and Shane Logan are gearing up for an exciting challenge.

They’re set to take on the prestigious Bathurst 6 Hour Car race over the upcoming Easter long weekend at The Mountain.

The Bathurst 6 hour is the largest production car race in the country and features both Pro drivers (V8 supercar and TCR drivers) alongside amateur racers pushing road going cars to their limits over six hours on arguably the toughest race track in the world.

Eight years ago, the team kicked off their endurance racing venture, debuting in the former 24 Hours of Lemons racing series.

Today, they have a fleet of two Audi cars, competing in 12 to 24 hour races as part of the Motor Events racing team.

“With several class and outright victories across all major Queensland tracks, the challenge of Bathurst was too much to ignore,” Shane Logan said.

“When an opportunity arose to purchase a historic race car with such a rich history in Australian production car racing and Mount Panorama in particular, we jumped at it, despite it not having an Audi badge.”

“The Toyota Camry was an unexpected but potent race car and after 26 years since its first appearance and seven years since its last appearance, the One-of-a-kind Toyota Camry will be making its way back to The Mountain.“

“We really wanted to showcase the history of the cars 25 years of racing in Australian production cars by taking it back to its original 1998 retro livery, from when it ran the Bathurst 1000 with the super tourers.”

“We’ve had such a great response to what we are doing from within the racing community, the fans and especially our local sponsors AutoPro, Synforce Lubricants, Turning Point Technology and many more.”
