Fraser Coast Show leading the way

Fraser Coast Agriculture Show president Melinda Wright FRASER Coast Agriculture Show took out a major award at the annual Queensland Shows Awards recently. The annual awards, in their sixth year, were held in Roma. The awards, run by the Next Generation committee of Queensland Ag Shows, recognise excellence in the agricultural show movement. The judges announced a tie for the Emerging Leader of the Year with Fraser Coast Show’s president Melinda Wright sharing the win with Pittsworth’s Show Society’s Bec Skene. Ms Wright could not attend the award ceremony in Roma but said she watched the awards live from her home, “When they said my name, I dropped my phone in shock!

Then my phone began to ring; from utter shock I accidentally hung up on the Queensland Ag Show Organisers! They then called me later in the night; to my surprise, I was live again!” “Receiving a nomination was such an honour and honestly didn’t feel I was deserving of the nomination up against so many talented people who have been a positive influence on our ever-growing show movement,” said Ms Wright. “It was a feeling of encouragement and reminder of why we give so much to a NFT Society to present our region with our Annual Fraser Coast Agriculture Show!” “Every leader is determined by the team that surrounds them. I have some amazing people surrounding me throughout these difficult times. As a team, we do the best that we can.” “Each day we all have a choice, I choose to wake up with a positive can-do attitude. Just do it!” Ms Wright urged people in the community to get involved with the show, “Think you can’t? Think again! Together we can do this! Come join our family orientated society where everyone is welcome.” She said they need volunteers and sponsorship now, more than ever. The Fraser Coast show attracts 20,000 through the

gates on show day and was recognised for its community focused initiatives. Positive new initiatives include a discount book supporting local businesses for show members, a schools outreach program to bolster next generation entries in the agricultural competition, the First Little Farmers Club for children and a ten year strategic plan for the showgrounds. Next Generation President Kait Shultz said, “Agricultural shows have played a leading role in the development of agriculture and communities since the first show was conducted in 1822 in Hobart. “They are one of the oldest continuous events in postcolonial Australian society and are still popular in every state and territory with around 587 shows run annually in Australia.” “In Queensland there are 127 Agricultural Show Societies run by more than 13,500 volunteers attracting more than 1.3 million visitors every year,” said Ms Shultz. She said the winners were the epitome of what makes the show movement enduringly successful, “They are tireless volunteers, determined and dedicated community members whose skills ensure their local show grows and thrives.”
