Hope Gathering gives widows comfort, purpose
BRENHAM – Approximately one million women are widowed each year in the United States and 75% of these women will lose their support/ friendship network within the first year.
One third of widows are younger than 60 and half are widowed by age 65. The average age of a widow in the U.S. is 59. Widows are of every age and at every stage of life and the needs are great.
Hope Gathering is a 501(c)3 non-profit Christian organization that provides hurting
widows comfort, encouragement, community, hope and purpose.
“We are a community of widows finding hope and healing in Christ, encouraging one another in the journey and seeking God’s purpose for our lives
in this season.”
Founders are Tami Glasco, Vicki Bruce and Kelly Bevers. On the Hope Gathering website, Tami shares how it all began:
“…. I was not in the season of old age when I became a widow. I was 18 days shy of my 51st birthday when my husband died in an unexpected, freak accident. We were enjoying the season of an empty nest, beginning to celebrate the joys of becoming grandparents and looking toward retirement. We were in the season of dreaming

“I found myself isolated. I didn’t fit into the circles of older widows. I also no longer fit with my friends who were still couples. I felt alone.
“As I struggled with my new reality and the need I desperately had to connect with another woman who understood the pain of what I was walking through, I realized there was no structure in place to find those women.
“I began to connect with a couple of other women similar in age who had lost their husbands; we were more acquaintances at that point than close friends, but the bond of loss quickly put down deep relational roots. We saw the need around us to connect others who were traveling the same journey.
“In the fall of 2015 my friends Vicki, Kelly and I met, and we shared the vision the Lord had birthed in our hearts: A community of widows finding hope and healing in Christ, encouraging one another in the journey and seeking God’s purpose for our lives in this season.
“We planned our first meeting – An Evening of Hope. We printed and mailed invitations to about 25 women in our small community, that we knew either personally or through others. Most of these women didn’t know another woman that was invited, and we were unsure if anyone would show up at my house that first December evening. To our astonishment 17 women walked through the door of my home most wondering why they had been willing to come and many in tears.

Medicare changes: What you need to know
By PAM HARRISON Spark Advisors
Medicare Trainer and Compliance Lead
Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Program Changes for 2025 What You Need to Know
Medicare Part D is the outpatient prescription drug benefit for people with Medicare.
The benefit is administered through Plans (insurance carriers) that contract with the federal government. People with Medicare can choose to enroll either in a stand-alone prescription drug plan (PDP) or a Medicare Advantage Plan with Prescription Drug coverage (MAPD) to help pay for prescription drugs.
While there have been changes to the program over the years, the changes for Plans in 2025 are significant due to provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 that go into effect for 2025. These changes affect both Part D Prescription Drug Plans (PDPs) and Medicare Advantage Plans with Prescription Drug Coverage (MAPDs). Here are a few of the changes you need to be aware of:
1. $2,000 cap on enrollees’ out-of-pocket costs for outpatient prescriptions covered by the Plan in 2025. This should lower the out-of-pocket costs for covered prescriptions for many beneficiaries.
2. Elimination of the Coverage Gap Phase (also called the Donut Hole). Instead of four phases, there will be three phases for Part D prescription drug coverage beginning in 2025. This should also lower the outof-pocket costs Medicare beneficiaries are responsible for paying.
a. Deductible Phase - the annual deductible for 2025 is $590. No Medicare drug plan may have a deductible of more than $590 in 2025; but deductibles can vary by Plan. Some Plans don’t have a deductible; and some Plans have a deduct-
ible on the higher tiers only.
b. Initial Coverage PhaseOnce the deductible is met, beneficiaries enter the initial coverage phase and pay a copay or coinsurance for covered drugs (up to 25% of the cost of covered prescription drugs) in this phase until reaching the $2,000 cap. The actual dollar amounts of copays and coinsurance vary in this phase, so be sure to compare these costs when choosing a Part D Plan.
c. Catastrophic Phase - in 2025, once a beneficiary reaches the $2,000 out-of-pocket cap, they will pay nothing for covered Part D drugs for the rest of the calendar year.
3. Introduction of the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan. Another provision in the Inflation Reduction Act requires all Medicare prescription drug plans offer enrollees the option to pay out-of-pocket prescription drug costs in the form of capped monthly installment payments instead of all at once at the pharmacy. The Plans (Carriers) will be sending out more information on this Payment Plan.
4. Premiums for Part D Plans will likely change. While we won’t know the actual premiums until they are released by the insurance carriers just before the Annual Enrollment Period, we do expect the premiums to go up slightly over 2024 premiums.
To see the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) information on the Inflation Reduction Act and Medicare, go to: https://www.cms.gov/inflation-reduction-act-and-medicare
What should you do to learn about these changes and how they will affect your Medicare prescription drug coverage in 2025?
The best thing you can do is schedule a review during AEP (Annual Enrollment Period) with the licensed agent that handles your Medicare Plan in-
surance.
a. The AEP (Annual Enrollment Period) runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7 each year. During AEP you can make a change to your Plan for 2025.
b. A licensed Insurance agent that represents multiple carri-
ers is trained to help you compare Medicare plans and help you find the plan that will best meet your needs for 2025.
c. Even if you have not had any prescription drug changes this year, there may be changes to your Plan’s formulary (the
September is
list of drugs it covers), copays, coinsurance and premiums, so make sure you do a Plan review with a licensed agent to ensure you know about all the changes and make an informed decision about your Prescription Drug Plan for 2025.

Howie’s Happenings
Rescue pup Peaches wants a ‘furever’ home
By ROBIN CZARNEK President and CEO
NEW BRAUNFELS – It’s been a whirlwind summer for Howie and Beau. They’ve had lots of visitors this summer as we’ve been granddog sitting Tig, Krypto and Oakley. The boys have been playing non-stop with their buddies and have been loving it. With all the playing, they crash hard at night, and we don’t hear a peep out of them until morning.
We have discovered that our doggie gates are a lost cause. Beau has figured out how to open them and can now get them open in seconds, so they’re pretty much useless at this point. We are trying to figure out another way to keep them out of trouble, but they’re pretty great at figuring a way around it. We have found that the boys and the granddogs all love ice. Dave and I can’t open the freezer without the whole crew running over to get ice. Treats are always first, but ice seems to be a close second.
Howie and Beau wanted to introduce you to their new friend, Peaches. She is an absolute darling retriever/terrier mix girl who’s about seven months old. Peaches is an energetic girl who loves to play, enjoys snuggling, is great with other dogs, smart and adapts to routines easily.

She would make an amazing companion and is looking for her forever family.
Peaches was rescued from a high kill shelter and though she’s has had a rough start to life, she hasn’t let that get her down. Did I mention those ears? One look at Miss Peaches’ irresistible doe eyes and the cutest, floppy ears, and it’s hard not to instantly fall in love. For some reason, despite how amazing she is, she hasn’t received any interest. If you’re looking for an adorable best friend, Peaches would be perfect for you!
If you’re interested in meeting
Peaches or any of the amazing pups at HOTK9 or for more information, please email: hotk9rescue@yahoo.com to schedule a time to meet them. For more information and to view all the amazing dogs available for adoption, please check out Heart of Texas SPCA / HOTK9 Rescue on Facebook or at www.heartoftexasspca.com. You’ll also be able to see their adoption events where you can meet many of their precious pups. Keep in mind that Heart of Texas SPCA/HOT K9 Rescue is a volunteer run organization, so email is best.

Hermann Sons Life Statewide Bowling Tournament
OFFICIAL - Final Results/Payouts
Fort Worth hosts 59th Statewide Bowling Tourney
By SANDRA JONES Tournament Secretary
FORT WORTH – The 59th Annual Hermann Sons Life Statewide Bowling Tournament in Fort Worth came to an end on July 28. Thank you to everyone who came out and bowled, those who traveled, and those who joined teams with strangers – it all made for another great tournament.
On Saturday, Vice President of Member Benefits Cecily Kelly said a few words and presented a check from the Home Office to Tournament President Janice Dueitt. These funds are added to the prize fund and we are always so glad to receive them. Thank you!
Opening ceremonies included the throwing out of the first ball. This year we honored three supporters of this tournament. Janice threw out a ball in honor of her father, the late Roy Dueitt, who was the last of the tournament founding fathers. Cynthia Galbreath threw out a ball in
Vice President of Member Benefits Cecily Kelly, left, presented a check from the Home Office to Janice Dueitt, tournament president. The donation goes toward the prize fund.
The first balls thrown out at the Statewide Bowling Tournament were in memory of three avid supporters. Scott Jones threw out a ball in honor of Ernest “Red” Kelly. Janice Dueitt threw out a ball in honor of her father Roy Dueitt and Cynthia Galbreath threw out a ball in honor of Janice Howk.
honor of her very dear friend, the late Janice Howk. Janice and her late husband Carl served on the board, always participated in the tournament and worked to recruit bowlers. Janice even came when she could not bowl to cheer us on. Scott Jones, a mem-
ber of Fort Worth Lodge, threw out a ball in honor of the late Ernest “Red” Kelly, another bowler who supported the tournament and was always there to bowl and make people laugh. These three impacted the tournament in so many ways and they will be
missed.
This year we had bowlers from Ada, Athens, Comfort, Dallas, Fort Worth, San Angelo, San Antonio, Fredericksburg, San Marcos, Rockdale, Houston and La Grange. The tournament had 23 teams participate, which was down from last year. Remember you can have two non-members bowl with two members or just get those two non-members to join.
San Antonio will host the 60th tournament in 2025 at Thousand Oaks Lanes. Make plans now to get a team or two together and join us for this milestone celebration. Let’s make it bigger and better than ever.
The tournament may have come to an end, but not before we had some tremendous bowling. Women high scorers: Trisha Burns, 213 – 605; Shannon Jones, 227-646; Kim Illhardt, 225-524; Bernadette Friesenhanh, 201461; Sharon Teal-Stockburger, 212-560; and Darlene Hampton, 236-557.
Men high scorers: Ronnie Burns, 45-659; John Gates, 290-771; Terry McFarland, 236-634; Dorian Villegas, 245-604; George Eilert, 224-567; George Galbreath, 222604; Brent Lewis, 226–571, Bart Wells, 228-666; Brandon Harden, 224-578; Cody Iverson, 237-647; Bryan Beauchamp, 239-676; Ken Bishop, 215-611; James Smith, 254-536; Jesse Hasty, 222-595; Dale Potter, 224-637; Trey Castor, 254-713; Scott Jones, 258-664; Keith Houston, 225-608; Garland Banta, 233-556; Stuard Marshall, 246-641; James Hill, 244-700; Allan Werner, 256-579; Rodney Ottmers, 268-608; and Jesse Castor, 257-602.
There was some great bowling, and I know there were some other high scorers. Congratulations to all the high scorers. I expect even higher scores next year! Thank you again to everyone that participated and a special thanks to those that came to cheer us on.
See you next year in San Antonio!

HSL mourns loss of former agent, committee member
VICTORIA – Lillie Mae “Lil” Schroeder Hosek, 83, a former agent and Grand Lodge Youth Activity Committee member died on May 24, 2024.
Lil was born on Nov. 18, 1940, in Victoria to Lillia Anna (Vogt) and Monroe Otto Schroeder. In her youth, Lil was the first junior member (life insurance policy holder) for Da Costa Lodge in 1948.
Lil married Henry Hosek Jr. on Sept. 15, 1959, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Victoria. They were blessed with three children, Sabra, Henry III and Amber.
In 1973, Lil became an insurance agent for Hermann Sons representing Da Costa Lodge. She was the first woman agent
to sell a million dollars’ worth of insurance. In 1976, the Schroeder family was recognized as a 100 Percent Hermann Sons
Family including Lil and Monroe, their four children, their children’s spouses and all of their grandchildren, a total of 18 individuals.
In 1977, she served as the first woman president of Da Costa Lodge. She worked with area lodges as a general agent and served on the Grand Lodge Youth Activity Committee in public relations.
Around 1966, she helped form the Da Costa Lodge School of Dance and in 1979, created the Da Costa Hermann Sons Junior Chapter organizing activities and excursions for the youth. Henry became an agent in 1983. He worked with the Da Costa Junior Chapter and served

Hope Gathering’s mission to help widows find healing
Cont’d from Pg. 3
“God began that evening what we call Hope Gatherings. … Our goal is to help each woman find healing, to see that she has purpose and to walk in obedience where God is calling her to walk that purpose out. We desire for women to see that we are forever marked by our loss, but we are not defined by it.”
Gathering Hope mission
Helping widows find hope and healing in Christ-centered communities.
Hope Gathering does this through local community in-
volvement, monthly Hope and Grace group gatherings, annual Luncheons of Hope, a Weekend of Hope retreat, online private Facebook groups and through the distribution of Hope Boxes.
Gathering Hope vision
For every widow to have a Christ-centered life full of hope, purpose and joy.
Hope Boxes are tangible reminders that someone cares and that there is Hope. Each box includes items helpful to a widow and is lovingly assembled by a woman in our Hope Gathering community. Through donations from ministry supporters, these Hope Boxes are available to hurt-
ing widows at no cost.
Each box is filled with helpful, grief related resources as well as items to encourage and meet a new widow amid her pain with understanding and love.
Hope Groups are monthly gatherings of those new to loss and those still working through the journey of grief. During a gathering the group shares a meal, a program and a devotional. Groups ideally meet in homes to create a more relaxed atmosphere. Monthly programs vary between grief related topics, practical help on issues like finances, health, personal safety, etc. and some months are geared
to something fun and creative.
A Grace Group is structured the same as a Hope Group but designed for senior widows. Grace groups typically meet during the day for those who prefer not to drive at night.
Give Hope – Hope Gathering accepts gifts that are used to help widows find hope and healing in Christ-centered communities.
“Every dollar you donate matters, whether it’s a one-time donation or a recurring gift.” What began as a local ministry has now become a ministry to widows nationwide. There are currently 50 Hope Gathering Communities throughout
seven states and widows have been reached in all 50 states with Hope Boxes. Hope Gathering continues to grow and multiply because they believe that no widow should have to travel this journey alone.

Executive director reviews 2024 Camp season
By IAN BRASSETT
Executive Camp Director
Another great season has come to an end and it’s time to look back at the summer and see how we did. Did we meet the expectations of both the campers and parents? I believe we did only as well as the individual camper’s experience.
At the end of the camper session, each camper takes a survey without the counselors present. Often these scores match the surveys we take from the parents which are sent through Survey Monkey the day the camper leaves camp. While I have begun calling the parents who requested a call in their surveys, I will not have finished by the time this article goes to print. All parents will be called by the end of September. Thank you for your patience.
The majority of the campers had a blast! But what specifically did they like and not like? There’s some interesting reading here. We are certainly dealing with two very different camps. At Riverside, the girls’ site, campers value the social aspect of camp most, while at Hilltop, the boys’ site, campers value the activities.
The least favorite thing on the survey is rest period, but kids need a rest period. While every decision is based on what is in the best interests of the camper, the rest period is invaluable for our staff as well. I’d love any suggestions on this.
To ensure an amicable atmosphere prevails in the dorms and during activities, we created on a new Camper Code of Conduct and worked with our staff before and during staff development on active supervision.
Food service
Food is the most complex of all. It is extremely difficult to please all the campers. We’re working on food production for many people all with varying tastes.
As always, all kitchen staff members are food handler cer-
tified. The kitchen was inspected by the State and passed with flying colors with no point deductions.
This year we changed food vendors. Many, if not most of the food items purchased were the same or similar to previous camp seasons.
We experimented with some changes in menu items. We added biscuits and gravy for breakfast which did not seem to move the radar at all. Grilled cheese and tomato soup were added and had mixed responses. It made the most popular and least popular food list for 2024.
We provided an evening snack every night along with the three main meals. At all meals there were always seconds, and in most cases, thirds available. Along with a complete salad bar offered at lunch and dinner, we provided peanut butter and jelly sandwiches along with whole fruit and cereal at every meal.
The menu provides a balanced offering. I’m open to having a Zoom discussion in the fall to gather ideas and suggestions if any parents or other stakeholders are willing to spend a couple of hours to help generate ideas for improving the food service. As an ACA visitor, I went to two other camps this summer and had lunch. I came back very pleased with our offerings.
Please contact me if you are interested in attending or being part of the discussion.
Counselors
Counselor survey scores this summer are very much in line with previous summers despite the many weather-related challenges we faced.
As a fraternal organization, we rely heavily on our CIT program for most of our staff. This summer, I was blown away by the CIT campers and the program and the leadership shown by our counselor named “Panic!” The CIT-2s that returned for a few weeks as JJCs show a lot

Parental experience
We are looking at ways to improve the process for submitting and tracking required camper forms. A new website and new platforms should make it easier for parents next year.
We posted over 13,000 photos this summer on the app (yes – I double checked the number). We do make every effort to photograph every camper! I’m sure if you ask my staff, they will say I never stop pushing them to take more and more photos. The drop-off and pick-up changes implemented due to COVID have remained in place. We saw many benefits in not prolonging the good-byes at drop off – it’s much better for the campers and streamlines the entire process.

Columbia Lodge to host Oktoberfest on Oct. 12
DALLAS – Columbia Lodge will host Oktoberfest at the Dallas Sons of Hermann Hall on Saturday, Oct. 12. Tickets are $20 at the door (HSL members will get a discount). Tickets include a traditional German dinner including sausage, potato salad, sauerkraut and more plus live music. Doors open at 5 p.m. and dinner is at 6:15 p.m. The all-important beverage of choice (aka beer) for such an event will be stocked in the coolers and available for purchase. Music by the Frohsinn Kapelle will start at about 6:30 p.m. A bit of history about the “Frohsinns”, as we commonly call them – the Dallas Frohsinn Singing Society German Choir, established in 1877, predates the Dallas Symphony by 23 years. In the 1950’s, a small band called the Frohsinn Schrammelkapelle (kapelle is ‘band’ in German) was created to perform with the choir. Many of these musicians were choir members, too. As the band grew, it became its own entity in the 1980’s as the Frohsinn Kapelle. They are continuing their journey to preserve German songs, language and culture (as does the choir) and have toured Germany and Austria. Members are glad to have them!
