Medicare AEP crucial time to review health plans

SAN ANTONIO – Medicare options are complex and sometimes confusing, and our licensed Medicare Agents want to help and educate you when determining the best plan for your healthcare needs.

Medicare Annual enrollment Period (AEP): What You Need to Know

The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), also known as the Annual Election Period, is a crucial time of the year for Medicare beneficiaries. The period runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7 each year, and it provides an opportunity for those enrolled in Medicare to make sure they are on the right plan when evaluating their health plan and prescription drug coverage. Here is what you need to know about AEP: What Changes can you make during AEP?

During AEP, Medicare beneficiaries have several options for adjusting their coverage:

• Switching Medicare Advantage Plans: You can switch from

one Medicare Advantage plan to another, whether it’s from a plan with drug coverage to one without, or vice versa.

• Switching from Original Medicare to a Medicare Plan: If you are on Original Medicare (Part A and Part B), you can switch to a Medicare Advantage plan which often includes dental, and prescription drug coverage.

• Switching from a Medicare Advantage Plan to Original Medicare: You can drop your Medicare Advantage Plan and return to Original Medicare. You can also join a stand-alone Medicare Part D plan if you return to Original Medicare.

• Changing Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans: You can join, switch, or drop a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan during this period.

• Updating Your Current Plan: Some plans change their costs, coverage, or provider networks every year. Reviewing your current plan during AEP ensures that it still meets your needs and budget.

Why is AEP Important?

AEP is important because it allows you to evaluate your Medicare coverage and make necessary adjustments. Health needs, medications, and financial situations can change, so it’s essential to review your coverage annually.

How to Prepare for AEP

• Review Your Annual Notice of Change: In October your current Medicare plan will mail you an Annual Notice of Change, which outlines any changes to your benefits, coverage, or costs for the coming year.

• Evaluate Your Healthcare Needs: Consider any changes in your health, the medication you take, or any new medical conditions that have developed.

• Compare Plans: Reach out to a licensed Hermann Sons Life Medicare Agent to compare

available plans in your area. Look at premiums, out-of-pocket costs, coverage options, and provider networks.

Key Dates to Remember

• Oct. 15: AEP begins.

• Dec. 7: AEP ends - changes made will take effect on Jan. 1 of the following year.

Final Thoughts

Due to the Inflation Reduction Act, there will be major changes in Medicare in 2025. The changes can bring potential disruptions and will require careful planning and review. Take advantage of the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) to make sure you have the best possible plan to fit your healthcare needs. By reviewing your current plan, comparing other options, and making necessary changes, you can ensure your Medicare coverage is aligned with your healthcare and financial goals for the year ahead. Reach out to a Hermann Sons Life Medicare Agent today by calling 210-527-9113.

See Pg. 4 for more Medicare information.

Opt-in request now required to receive newspaper

SAN ANTONIO – Many of our members have indicated they no longer want to receive the printed copy of the Hermann Sons Life Newspaper by mail. Many read it on the Hermann Sons Life website, through our Facebook page or by the email option. By the time it is received in the mail, members say it is often thrown in the trash.

To be more ecologically responsible and less wasteful, the Home Office is requiring members who want to continue to receive the mailed

copy of the newspaper to opt-in.

As of Jan. 1, 2025, the mailed newspaper request on all members’ policies will be reset.

We understand that there are many members who do enjoy reading the printed version of the newspaper and we are happy to continue mailing it to them at their request.

To continue to receive the newspaper by mail, call 210-226-9261 ext. 325 or 1-800-234-4124 ext. 325 or email:

Get to know Medicare

Choosing your Medicare coverage is a big decision - and it can be very confusing. This month, we’ll discuss the basics of Original Medicare, and next month we’ll cover some additional coverage options you have as a Medicare beneficiary. You’ll have a better understanding of the different “parts” of Medicare and the choices you have for your healthcare needs. Hermann Sons Life is available to assist you with any questions you may have and to help you find the best plan to meet your needs.

Medicare is individual health insurance offered to U.S. citizens and other eligible individuals based on age (65), disability or qualifying health condition.

Medicare was originally created with two parts: Part A and Part B. These two parts are

known as Original Medicare and are offered by the federal government to eligible individuals.

Medicare Advantage (Part C) and Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D) are offered by private insurance companies.

Medicare Supplement Plans are also offered by private insurance companies and help pay for some out-of-pocket expenses with Original Medicare. We’ll cover Parts C and D; and Medicare Supplements next month.

For a complete list of services included in Part A and Part B, go to: https://www.medicare.gov/ basics/get-started-with-medicare/medicare-basics/parts-ofmedicare

What Original Medicare does not cover:

• Most outpatient prescription drugs

• Routine Dental care - exams, cleanings, X-rays, most dental services

Here are some things covered by Original Medicare:

Part A Hospital Insurance

• Inpatient hospital stays, including special care units, like intensive care and operating room services

• Skilled nursing facility care after a qualified inpatient stay

• Hospice care

• Some home health care

How much does Original Medicare cost?

• Routine eye exams, eyeglasses or contact lenses

• Routine hearing tests or hearing aids

• Wellness benefits such as gym memberships

• Routine foot care

• Long-term care

• Cosmetic surgery

• Acupuncture

• Most care outside the U.S.

As you can see, Original Medicare doesn’t cover everything associated with your healthcare and there are out-of-pocket expenses associated with covered services.

Most Medicare beneficiaries benefit from additional coverage like a Medicare Supplement Plan and a Prescription Drug Plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan with Prescription Drug coverage.

Next month, we’ll cover your choices when it comes to additional coverage and how to choose the right option for your healthcare needs.

Part B Medical Insurance

• Covers certain doctors’ services, like Primary Care Physician and specialists visits

• Outpatient care, like outpatient surgery and ambulance

• Medical supplies, like wheelchairs and walkers

• Preventive services, like mammograms

Part A Part B

• Premium: $0 for most people if you or your spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years

• Deductible: $1,632 per benefit period* in 2024

• Hospital co-payment:

º Days 1-60: $0

º Days 61-90: $408/day in 2024

º Days 91+$816/day in 2024

• Premium: $174.70-$594 in 2024, depending on income**

• Deductible: $240 annual deductible in 2024

• Coinsurance: 20% of Medicare approved amount for Part B services

Rambunctious Beau keeps busy as an escape artist

NEW

– Howie and Beau have continued to stay busy with their antics. When Dave and I came home from a recent lodge meeting, we found our recliner sideways and both boys sound asleep. It seems they had quite the party while we were out. The boys had a temporary reprieve from being groomed (which they hate) due to the groomer needing to reschedule, but they are finally presentable again…however temporary it may be with all the messes they get into. Howie’s bunny soft fur sheds constantly and we could knit a sweater with what he leaves behind, so the grooming was a welcome relief. Beau has continued to hone his skills as an escape artist. We’ve given up on trying to keep the

doggie gate shut since there isn’t much use in that. While Howie isn’t into exerting much energy and is more of a couch potato, Beau loves to chase balls, play fetch and carry around his “babies.”

He absolutely loves toys and balls and we’ve been on the hunt for indestructible toys. Most recently, Beau has been loving his new toy, a Kong Floppy Knots Elephant, which in addition to being his favorite, has held up remarkably well considering what he puts it through.

Howie and Beau wanted to remind you about their friend, Jake. We featured Jake in a recent edition, but for some reason, this sweet boy still hasn’t been adopted. While Jake has had to endure a lot in his short life, you would never know it. Jake is a well-behaved, gentle boy that is

super snuggly and affectionate. He loves playing with toys and can’t wait to entertain his forever family with his antics and great personality.

If you’re interested in meeting Jake or any of the pups at HOTK9 or for more information, please email: hotk9rescue@yahoo.com to schedule a time to meet them. For more information and to view all of the amazing dogs available for adoption, please check out Heart of Texas SPCA / HOTK9 Rescue on Facebook or at www.heartoftexasspca.com You’ll also be able to see their adoption events where you can meet many of their precious pups.

Keep in mind that Heart of Texas SPCA/HOT K9 Rescue is a volunteer run organization, so email is best.

Beau, above, takes a break from his antics. Howie, right, loves cuddling with Mama Robin Czarnek and, below he hopes to get Dad, Dave, to share his burger

Jake is still in need of a loving home. For information, email: hotk9rescue@yahoo.com
