Branding initiatives launched SAN ANTONIO – Through the years, this organization has been known by many names – Hermann Sons, Sons of Hermann, Hermann Sons Life Insurance, Hermann Sons Fraternal Insurance, the Order of the Sons of Hermann in the State of Texas, and the list goes on. “Being known by so many names makes it hard to market the organization,” Grand President/CEO Buddy Preuss explained. “And without good marketing, it is even harder to increase membership and improve our position in the life insurance industry.” To address this issue, Grand President Preuss put together a working group and tasked that group with rebranding the organization. Rebrand-
ing is a process that involves looking at all aspects of the organization – the name, the visual identity, who we are and what we do and how we explain that to members and non-members. One of the first steps was to decide on a single name. “We wanted a name that would honor our roots, identify that we sell life insurance and that our organization is about the whole life,” Communications Director Kathie Ninneman said. Consumer research on Hermann Sons Life was positive, so after much discussion and consultation with people inside and outside the organization, the group decided that Hermann Sons Life would be the name by which we will be known.

Another key step in the process was to create a new visual identity – a new logo. A San Antonio design firm was hired to create the new logo. The new logo appears at the top of this page and will be featured prominently in future marketing initiatives. The Grand Committee has approved both the name Hermann Sons Life and the new logo. The new logo is bold and simple with the intention of showing strength, endurance and longevity. President’s Message
Change brings new opportunities When I was camp director one of my responsibilities was selecting the counseling staff. Choosing the best people to care for our children was of the utmost importance. A turning point in that process was when we wondered what would happen if we changed the way we looked at past campers. When we did, something wonderful happened – the Counselor-in-Training program was born and would forever change the way we recruit staff. Profound improvement through change is happening in our organization today that will bring about new opportunities well into the future. Our choice of one name, the introduction of a new visual identity and explaining who we are in a clearer way helps communicate our unique message to members and the public. These deliberate and tested improvements are needed so that we may attract new members and strengthen community in even greater ways. I am excited about the way we’re defining our brand and thank the Branding Working Group, Home Office staff, agents and members who were influential in honoring who we are as an organization through the definition of our brand. But even more is happening within the governance of the organization. The Grand Com-
mittee (our Board of Directors) and Laws Committee are recommending changes that will modernize the way we do business and allow us to be current in our decision making while remaining proud and respectful of history and dedicated to member voice. It’s not just about making improvements; it’s about doing what is necessary and in the best interest of our organization. These changes will be considered by delegates to the Grand Lodge Convention in May. Three years ago an internal task force was appointed to investigate ways to modernize how we do business. One of the immediate needs identified was an increase in the base of qualified candidates for the Board of Directors since the base has been declining through the years. When you increase the base of qualified candidates, you have the opportunity for more diverse perspectives which can in turn stimulate growth. With this in

mind, it is proposed that candidates for consideration to the Board can be delegates or non-delegates to the convention. In short, any member who meets minimum qualifications can run for the Board of Directors. We are seeking candidates who have: A commitment to and understanding of Hermann Sons Life, its members and the fraternal system, preferably based on experience, Personal qualities of integrity, credibility and a passion for improving the lives of members, Extensive professional experience with significant executive leadership accomplishments in business, government or the nonprofit sector, and The desire and energy to actively participate in and contribute to meetings and other assignments. To learn more about Board candidacy check out the call for candidates on Page 4 of this issue or on our website. I also am excited about our focused service cause. Grief support is a perfect fit for our organization and is something our lodges and members already do naturally. By focusing on this cause, we will have the opportunity to do even greater good. I thank the lodges and members who have already
supported this cause through donations of time and money and hope all members will join in support of future grief support endeavors. The other officers are just as excited as I am about these improvements and opportunities. We’ve been sharing the information about brand definition, stimulating lodge engagement through local lodge governance improvements, our focused service cause and Grand Lodge governance at leadership summits across the state. When asked about these improvements, one ambassador said that she “thought it was all good and necessary.” Another ambassador said, “Change is good! This is exciting!” And there were numerous additional comments made in the same vein. The overwhelmingly positive response makes me proud to be leading an organization comprised of people who see the importance of embracing the improvements that will lead us into a successful future. I, along with the Grand Committee, believe we must make the necessary improvements to keep our beloved organization strong and relevant for our members today and tomorrow. It’s time to elect Convention delegates and officers Cooler weather always invigorates and offers us better incentives to do something different. Some great lodge events are being planned for the next few months from Oktoberfest celebrations to holiday gatherings and special community outreach programs. Join your fellow lodge members and become involved. eLecTIoN oF LoDGe DeLeGATeS The 47th Grand Lodge Convention will be held May 1-3, 2017, at the Embassy Suites in San Marcos. In accordance with Grand Lodge Laws, the Organization Board, which is composed of Executive Committee members, met on Oct. 4 to determine the number of delegates each lodge is entitled to elect and send to the Convention. Local lodge secretaries have been mailed the detailed information and a form on which to record the names of lodge delegates and alternate delegates elected. This election, by law, should be held at the November or December lodge meeting. The delegate information form should be completed and returned to the Home Office as soon as the lodge delegate election has been held.
LocAL LoDGe oFFIcer eLecTIoNS Local lodge elections for 2017 also are held in the months of November and December as prescribed by the local lodge bylaws. Please note the form for reporting the names of those elected and appointed to office was included in the packet lodge officers received at the Leadership Summits. The form will be mailed to those lodges that were not represented at one of the summits. The form for reporting the 2016 meeting dates can be found in the November section of the lodge planner. These forms need to be forwarded to the Home Office as soon as completed. reTIremeNT Home cHrISTmAS FUND The letter advising of the Retirement Home Christmas Fund can be found in the September section of the lodge planner. Several lodges have already made donations to the 2016 Retirement Home Christmas Fund. These donations are appreciated. Lodges that have donated will be given recognition in the next issue of the newspaper. The money received will be used for a special gift that can be used by all resident members.
LeADerSHIP SUmmITS All four of the Leadership Summits have now been held. Lodge representatives, committee members and agents attended to learn new ways to engage with members and future members and reinforce the belief that we are better together. Moving forward in one direction will result in positive results for Hermann Sons Life. THANKFUL Yes, it was quite the surprise to be honored for my 50 years of service with our great organization. The officers and staff did an amazing job in pulling off this surprise party! I am very fortunate to be able to say, there is no place I would rather be or have been in these 50 years than right here. It has been an incredible experience. Thanks to all of you. SAN ANTONIO – Applications are now being accepted for candidates for the Hermann Sons Life Board of Directors . Directors support Hermann Sons Life by providing missionbased leadership, strategic governance and organizational and fiduciary oversight . If approved by Convention delegates, six directors will be elected to a four-year term at the 47th Grand Lodge Convention, May 1-3, 2017, in San Marcos . The board will traditionally meet four times annually for two full weekdays and perform other assigned duties requiring travel . The minimum requirements
for nomination are: • Hermann Sons membership for at least three years as of May 1, 2017 • In good standing with premiums and local lodge dues paid current • Possess and prove at least three of the following core competencies - Business Judgement - Vision - Strategic insight - Management skills - Leadership - Industry knowledge - Financial literacy - Financial accounting skills - Professional communication skills

Agents receive CE training in Comfort By TIM KOLBE Vice President-Marketing Fifty-eight agents met at Hermann Sons Life-Camp Oct. 6-8 for the annual Agents’ Continuing Education Weekend. Agents started arriving on Thursday afternoon. Dinner that evening was barbecue brisket and sausage and all the fixings. After dinner, the agents were joined by screen share by Roger Gertz, owner of Viscalc, the illustration software provider. Roger visited with the agents about general sales topics and how the added agent’s software tools can assist them in being more effective and efficient with record keeping. Friday morning’s instruction began with Special Representative Gary Falkenberg presenting “Ethics for the Insurance Industry.” This was followed by a presentation by myself about the features and functions of the single and modal premium interest-sensitive whole life plans. After lunch the agents got
“down in the weeds,” discussing policy contract provisions found in all life insurance contracts. The six special representatives served as primary presenters. Good discussion was had from the exchange and hypothetical situations assisted with student learning. At the end of the instruction day, Grand President/CEO Buddy Preuss spoke about the vital role agents play in providing Texas families with financial protection. After some socializing, the agents and their guests were served a dinner of steak, choice of potato and all the trimmings. The next day broke bright and crisp, as a cool front moved through during the night, dropping the temps into the 50s. There’s nothing like a sunrise in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. After a hearty breakfast, the agents were off and running with a class on annuities taught by Grand Vice President-Investments Harry Werland. He spoke about the different

I followed up with a session on the new Department of Labor Fiduciary Rule and how it will affect the financial invest-
ment sector, providers and producers. The weekend training ended earlier this year, as the Texas Department of Insurance has reduced the number of mandated continuing education hours from 30 every two years, to 24.
We broke at lunch with a sandwich offering, and everyone departed for home. I took my time packing the vehicle to enjoy the peace of the Camp, and since it was a beautiful day, took a scenic route home See CAMPAIGN, Pg. 7

Marketing Carol Krauss retires as special rep Quarterly Sales Leaders SAN ANTONIO – Special Representative Carol Krauss has retired as a special representative for Hermann Sons Life. But she is still on the job serving as a part-time field agent. Family and Home Office staff honored her with a retirement party in late July. Sister Krauss started her sales career with Hermann Sons Life as a field agent in 1994. She was appointed a special representative in 2003. She qualified for the Grand President’s Club 13 years and has already qualified for 2016 and the Executive Club two years. Grand President/CEO Buddy Preuss commented, “No one did it better than Carol when it came to sales.” Grand Vice President-Marketing Tim Kolbe echoed
SAN ANTONIO – The Marketing Department has announced the names of the top producing agents for the third quarter of 2016. Agents must meet minimum requirements for number of applications written (6) and amount of premium income generated ($3,000) to qualify for quarterly bonuses.
Special Representative Carol Krauss was honored with a retirement party in late July. She is pictured with family members who attended the party including daughter Carol Sue Forrest, daughter-in-law Shelley Krauss, sister Shirley Griffin, granddaughters Katie Krauss and Holly Forrest and grandson Kasey Krauss. Brother Preuss’ remarks and added, “she taught me so much during our years of working together.”

I want to thank our Marketing staff for putting on a great educational weekend and Camp Executive Director Katie Klohn and her staff for their hospitality and for keeping us well fed and sustained during the breaks. Delegate count for 47th Grand Lodge Convention The Organization Board met on Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016, in accordance with Grand Lodge Laws, Article 24. Present were Executive Committee members, Grand President/CEO Allan Preuss, Grand Vice President-Secretary/Treasurer Mary Beam, Grand Vice President-Investments Harry Werland, Grand Vice President-Marketing Tim Kolbe and Grand Vice President-Fraternal Kim Krueger. The purpose of this meeting was to verify compliance with Grand Lodge Laws, Article 25, which requires publication in the Hermann Sons Life newspaper of the number of adult certificate members in good standing of each lodge and the number of Grand Lodge delegates to which each lodge is entitled. The lodges in good standing as of Oct. 1, 2016, are listed below by name with the adult certificate membership including junior certificate holders who have reached adult status (18) years, less those adult members whose certificates are being carried under the Automatic Premium Loan clause. Election of local lodge delegates should be held at a regular lodge meeting in either the months of November or December of this year. The secretary of each local lodge is notified by the Organization Board, in writing, of the certificate membership in good standing and the number of delegates and alternates to which the lodge is entitled. Other important requirements are given in this letter, which must be strictly adhered to in order that a member may qualify as a delegate or an alternate to the 47th Grand Lodge Convention. Grand Lodge Laws governing the procedure, which must be followed in the election of delegates and alternates, are provided here and are as follows:

Grand Lodge Laws provide rules for electing delegates Cont'd. from Pg. 8 Article 19. Delegate Election by Local Lodges – Duties. Each Local Lodge, which is in accordance with Grand Lodge Laws and in good standing with the Grand Lodge on the first day of October of the year preceding a regular convention of the Grand Lodge, shall be entitled to at least one (1) delegate and shall elect such delegate at a regular meeting in the month of November or December of said year. The delegate shall be elected from the adult certificate members in good standing who have attended at least one-half of the Local Lodge meetings since the Grand Lodge Convention, such delegate to serve as the representative of said Local Lodge to the next regular Grand Lodge Convention, there to attend said Grand Lodge Convention meeting in accordance with Grand Lodge Laws and report back to said Local Lodge the Proceedings of said Grand Lodge Convention. Unless and until a new and different Grand Lodge delegate is elected, as herein provided, said Grand Lodge delegate so elected in accordance with this said law shall serve at all Grand Lodge Conventions that may be called in accordance with the Grand Lodge Laws. In addition to Grand Lodge delegate therein provided for, all Local Lodges with a membership in excess of two hundred adult certificate members in good standing on the first day of October of the year preceding a Grand Lodge Convention shall be entitled to additional Grand Lodge delegates in accordance with the provisions set out in Article 20. A Local Lodge member, as of the first day of October of the year immediately preceding a regular Grand Lodge Convention, who is not in default in the payment of such member’s Local Lodge dues or whose premiums and dues are not being advanced by the Grand Lodge under the automatic premium loan provisions of the member’s Benefit Certificate, is in good standing. Article 20. Additional Delegates from Local Lodges – Number – Election – Duties. Each Local Lodge with an adult certificate membership in excess of two hundred members, that has met all the requirements of Article 19, above, in addition to said Grand
Lodge delegate elected under the terms of Article 19, shall be entitled to and shall elect one additional Grand Lodge delegate for each additional complete two hundred adult certificate members. The election of additional Grand Lodge delegates and their duties shall meet all requirements of Article 19. Article 21. Certificate of Election of Delegates to Grand Lodge. The Secretary of the Local Lodge shall certify to the Grand Lodge, in writing, the names of all duly elected Grand Lodge delegates, within ten (10) days after such election.

Children’s Grief Awareness Day to be observed Nov. 17 National Children’s Grief Awareness Day is observed each year on the third Thursday in November, which is also the Thursday before Thanksgiving. This year it will be celebrated on Nov. 17. The holidays are a time when many children need support if they are grieving the loss of a loved one, so Children’s Grief Awareness Day takes place at a fitting time. According to childrensgriefawarenessday.org, “Before they graduate from high school, one out of every 20 children will have a parent die - and that number doesn’t include those who experience the death of a brother or sister, a close grandparent, an aunt or uncle, or friend.” Children experiencing grief look normal to the people around them but are experiencing significant difficulties in living with the loss of someone important to them. The purpose of this national awareness day
is to help people learn how to help grieving children and to remind them that grief is a process that is different for everyone. Each child experiencing grief needs compassion and caring because only they understand how they’re feeling. Grief Support Camp to benefit from S.A. Rampage hockey game SAN ANTONIO – Nov. 18 has been designated as Hermann Sons Life Family Fun Night at the San Antonio Rampage hockey game at the AT&T Center in San Antonio. When Hermann Sons Life members (or non-members) buy their tickets through this special promotion, a portion of the cost of each ticket will benefit the Grief Support Session at Hermann Sons Life-Camp. Twenty members will be selected to high five the
players as they take the ice. And, if at least 100 tickets are sold, Hermann Sons Life members will be able to free skate on the ice after the
game. The Rampage will provide the skates. The discount prices for this special promotion are $25 and $17. The $25 tickets are the charter level seats nearest the ice. the festive mood of the season does not mean people with diabetes can throw dietary caution to the wind. With the holiday season soon upon us, diabetics can heed the following tips from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help them stay on a healthy track.
• Stick to your normal routine. While the holiday season can be unpredictable, the CDC advises diabetics to stick to their normal routines as closely as possible. Because holiday guests cannot control food served to them at family gatherings or parties, the CDC recommends

• Be extra careful with alcohol. Alcohol is served or readily available at many holiday gatherings, and many people overindulge because of the festive mood of the season. Overindulging in alcohol is dangerous for anyone, but diabetics must be especially mindful of their alcohol consumption. Alcohol can lower blood sugar and interact with diabetes medicines. Diabetics who want to enjoy a holiday libation should keep their alcohol consumption to a minimum. • Eat slowly. Eating slowly can benefit anyone during the holiday season. Eating at a leisurely pace gives diners’ brains ample time to signal that their bodies are full. By eating quickly, diners may be eating more calories than they hoped to eat, and that can lead to uncomfortable feelings of fullness after a meal. Diabetics who can slow down their eating are less likely to overindulge in less healthy holiday foods that can affect their blood sugar levels. • Remain active. The holiday season can be hectic, as adults often must juggle extraordinarily busy social schedules with the responsibilities of everyday life. Many people sacrifice time at the gym to ease the burden of hectic holiday schedules, but diabetics must resist that temptation. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases notes that routine physical activity helps diabetics keep their blood glucose levels in their target range. Physical activity also helps the hormone insulin absorb glucose into all of the body’s cells for energy. That extra energy boost can help diabetics fend off holiday-related fatigue. Diabetics face a lot of temptation during the holiday season. But with the right plan of action in place, men and women with diabetes can enjoy a healthy holiday season.

Members mourn recent passing of David Spaeth YOAKUM – David Spaeth, a member of the Youth Activities Committee and a member of Hochheim-Prairie Lodge since 1967, passed away Sept. 23 at the age of 62. Brother Spaeth was born in Yoakum in 1953. He lived there his entire life except for the four years his family spent in New Braunfels when he was a young child. He loved living in Yoakum and being involved in the community. Besides his involvement in Hermann Sons Life, he was an active member of the Yoakum Jaycees, Lions Club, Yoakum Chamber
of Commerce and the Yoakum Knights of Columbus. A member of St. Joseph’s Church, he served as a Eucharistic minister and usher. He was a member of the St. Joseph’s School Advisory Council, serving as president and chairing numerous fund-raising events. One of his proudest moments was receiving the Mother Seton Service Award recognizing his service to St. Joseph’s School. He was also a Bluebonnet Mentor and a member of the ACTS community both as a retreatant and team member. He had been employed for the past 39 years with AT&T
David Spaeth and was extremely proud to be a “telephone man.” David met his wife, Sherri, at Wurstfest in New Braunfels.
They married in 1983. They have three daughters who were the joy of their father’s life – Davi, age 22; Claire, age 20; and Caroline, age 19. Because Brother Spaeth had a deep faith in God, it was a priority to him that his girls receive an education where they could learn daily about God and Christianity. All three daughters attended St. Joseph’s School in Yoakum and St. Paul’s High School in Shiner. Brother Spaeth dearly loved spending his evenings and weekends sitting on sidelines and bleachers cheering them on and visiting with other parents.
Because of his recent hospitalization, he was unable to attend Caroline’s graduation in May but still enjoyed viewing it (and sharing it with many hospital employees) via Facetime on his iPhone. Services were held Sept. 27 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Yoakum. Burial followed in the St. Joseph Catholic Mausoleum. Memorials may be given to the Spaeth Girls Education Fund, First State Bank, P.O. Box 778, Yoakum, Texas, 77995. It was Brother Spaeth’s desire that his daughters be able to complete their college degrees.

Siblings work at Camp Siblings Vicky “Tricky” and Russell “Superstar” Chavez worked together at Camp this summer for the second year in a row. When they are not at Camp, “Tricky” studies at Texas A&M University and “Superstar” is a senior at Judson High School. Resident Vonnie Clubb reports, “This last September was like no other I’ve experienced. My sister, Lora, her husband, Scott, and I traveled to Oregon where I was united with my five half-sisters. Lora’s Aunt Betty and Uncle Meg opened their home to us and invited all five sisters to lunch. Bessie, Grace, Norene, Peggy and Flora arrived with flowers and hugs. It was a wonderful afternoon that I still can’t
believe happened. Dreams can come true! I arrived Sept. 10 and left the 24th. During my visit, I got to see the Pacific Ocean and went to two casinos. The trees and scenery were fabulous and what I call mountains in Texas are hills in Oregon. The weather was great (no humidity). Of course, I had to have some of their clam chowder and fresh salmon. When I flew back to Texas, here came the rain. I’m
hoping to visit again in the future and keep in contact with my sisters.” Chapel service was conducted on Sept. 26 by Anglican Priest David Guthrie. Residents Kathy Bender and Al Schroeder assisted. Cake and ice cream was served at the noon meal on Sept. 30 in honor of those celebrating birthdays that month. – Helen Widner

Hondo lodges present pins at joint Family Night HONDO – Hondo Lodge and Hondo Victory Lodge held their annual joint Family Night Social on Sept. 13 at the lodge hall. After the Pledge of Allegiance, Hondo Lodge President Bobby Tschirhart asked everyone to join him in a moment of silence in honor of the victims of the 9-11 tragedy in 2001. Thompson of Granbury, who all joined Sept. 19, 1966. Members were notified that Mary K. Hatzenbuehler of Arlington passed away July 10 at the age of 94. Peggy E. Martin of Mabank passed away July 12 at the age of 88. The
lodge will make a donation to the Retirement Home in their memory. The Consolidation Committee met Sept. 11. Columbia will elect officers, serve turkey dinner Nov. 6 DALLAS – October is here, the heat has finally dissipated somewhat and Oktoberfest has come and gone. Columbia Lodge celebrated with much help and support from Dallas Lodge, the Dallas Frohsinn, and later Savoy Swing. Jean Ernst handled the kitchen chores and food preparation. Thanks go to her and to all of those who volunteered and helped make the evening a success. Thanks also to those who came and supported the event. Columbia Lodge is busy as ever, with the food drive com-
ing up and perhaps another installment of the book drive. Input is needed from members to keep the lodge and hall active. The lodge will elect officers and Home Association representatives for 2017 at the Sunday, Nov. 6, meeting. It begins at 3 p.m. Everyone’s vote and participation is encouraged. Remember that Nov. 6 is also when Daylight Savings ends so don’t forget to fall back with your clock before the meeting. A turkey dinner will be served afterwards. The lodge will provide the turkey, dressing and
mashed potatoes. Everyone is asked to bring a side dish and dessert. Discussion continues about the consolidation of the lodges. A committee is being established to coordinate the annual Christmas party. The Home Association has been busy with upkeep and maintenance issues at the Hall. There is currently work being done on the downstairs floor so be careful when you are in the hallway and note the recently restored front meeting room. All the sanding has been completed and soon the walls will be finished. Thanks go out to those who participated and helped in the restoration of the Hall. Soon, the bar room will undergo the same restoration efforts to eliminate the paint that has covered up the walls for much too long. Your vol-

Deanville to present donations DEANVILLE – Deanville Lodge will make donations of money and food to the Burleson County Manor Christian Care store and Elizabeth Lutheran Church in observance of Make a Difference Day. On Oct. 9, the lodge participated in the annual Deanville Volunteer Fire Department fund-raiser by providing cold drinks. The recent fund-raiser for Brazos Valley Hospice was a success.

The 2017 calendar will be ready and the 2017 officers will be elected. The Christmas party will be held Sunday, Dec. 11, at 3 p.m. at the Zorn Bowling Club. An adult gift exchange will be held (price range $7-$8). If you bring a child, bring a gift for them. Games will be played with poinsettias and gold/silver coins for the winners. The cost of the turkey meal will be $5 for adults and $2.50 for children.

Janice Kuhen and Agnes Dreibrodt reported on changes to the Grand Lodge Laws and Charter that will be voted on at the May 2017 Grand Lodge Convention to be held in San Marcos. Mary Lou Preuss won the attendance prize.
The Sept. 12 meeting was also held at La Vista Retirement Home. Celebrating a birthday was Marshall McQuaig. Celebrating an anniversary were Marshall and Florence McQuaig, 46 years. Welcomed as new members were Adrian Colin, James Ray Schermerhorn and Braydon Schermerhorn. The Cheer Committee reported visiting William Braune and Burnice Noble at the nursing homes where they live. Members agreed to monetary donations for Meals on Wheels for Thanksgiving and the Women’s Shelter. And a donation will be sent to the Retirement Home Christmas Fund. Fort Worth Lodge welcomes three new members FORT WORTH – Fort Worth Lodge has welcomed three new members. Trey and Ryan Schaule are the grandchildren of Kim and Ronnie Burns. The third new member is their cousin, Sawyer Rhodes. The lodge has not met its 2016 new member goal but this is a good start. Kudos go to Bradley Whitley. Bradley plays Iron Manstyle football playing both offense and defense. He is starting middle back on defense and tackle on offense. He plays for the H.F. Vineta plans November social, holiday dinner SAN ANTONIO – Vineta Lodge will start its holiday celebrations with a ham dinner on Dec 1. Call Ruth Bailey at 210-602-5147 for reservations. There are currently 52 girls
enrolled in dance classes held Tuesdays at the Yoakum Intermediate School Auditorium. In observance of Make A Difference Day, the lodge will make a donation to the local food pantry. Bob Jungman, Wilburn Pargmann, Janet Zabransky and Carolyn Hoepfl were scheduled to represent the lodge at the Leadership Summit in DaCosta on Oct. 15.

Kirby Lodge collecting Christmas gifts for Boysville KIRBY – Kirby Lodge will meet Monday, Nov. 7, with members providing the potluck meal. Members are asked to start bringing unwrapped gifts for donation to Boysville at Christmas. The staff at Boysville will match the donations to the items the children have on their wish lists (socks, clothes, toys, games, books, etc.) and volunteers will wrap each gift. The children range in age from newborn to 18 years and older. The lodge Christmas party will be held Sunday, Dec. 4, with a catered meal of pork

A moment of silence was observed in memory of Hugo Schaarschmidt who passed away Sept. 1 at the age of 88. He had been a member since 1947. Brielle Dziadik-Willingham reported that a new dance instructor, Callie Schmidbauer, is teaching on Tuesdays this year in Luling.

Austin to serve fajitas at November meeting AUSTIN – Austin Lodge will meet Sunday, Nov. 6, at 2 p.m. The lodge will furnish the fajitas. Members are asked to bring side dishes and desserts. At the Oct. 2 meeting, President Ed Kurtz discussed important governance changes and branding initiatives he had learned about during the San Antonio Leadership Summit. President Kurtz, Recording Secretary Pat Spradling and Financial Secretary Billie Harris attended this summit. More information on these changes will be shared at a later date. In observance of Make a Difference Day, members agreed to sponsor one child to attend the new Hermann Sons Life Grief Support Camp that will be held for the first time next summer. camp food but not so much the dance with the girl campers. He enjoyed riflery so much he plans to continue the sport by participating in 4-H competition. Bernice Basward reported sending sympathy cards to Shirley Orts and family, Glen and Pat Orts, Betty Tadlock, Wilford and Janice Koslan, Gary and Linda Orts and Cornell and Ethel Kunkel on the passing of Allen Orts. Cibolo members enjoy Halloween spooktacular CIBOLO – Cibolo Lodge held its Halloween spooktacular meeting on Thursday Oct. 6 at Christ the King Lutheran Church. Members came dressed in some awesome costumes this year making the selection of the winners pretty hard. The junior member winners were Javion Campos as a Grandpa and Maezey Bierstedt as Sheriff Callie. The adult winner was Joy Brown as a Deviled Egg. The rummage sale was a success. A total of $620 was raised during the Matching Funds event. The money will be presented to the Cibolo Volunteer Fire Department at the Dec. 11 Christmas party. This year the Christmas party will showcase the dancers starting at 3:30 p.m. when they will perform. The menu will be bacon wrapped chicken, green beans, potatoes and salad for those that request one. Everyone is asked to bring a dessert to share. Houston to elect officers, make party plans Nov. 14 HOUSTON – Houston Lodge has a busy schedule for its Nov. 14 meeting. It will start at 6 p.m. with a social hour, followed by the potluck meal at 7 p.m. and the meeting at 7:45 p.m. The location is Sokol Hall, 1314 W. Patton, Houston. Members are asked to bring desserts. Lodge members are seeking a caterer to provide a traditional Thanksgiving meal. After the meal the 2017 officers will be elected. Fredericksburg will elect officers at Nov. 1 meeting SAN ANTONIO – Fredericksburg Lodge will meet Tuesday, Nov. 1. A covered dish meal will be served. Giddings Lodge presents membership pins GIDDINGS – Giddings Lodge recognized its 50-year, 60-year and 70-year membership pin recipients at the September meeting. Present to receive their pins were 50-year members Anna Marie Joyce, a member since June 3, 1966, and daughter Sharon Kurio, a member since May 7, 1966, Gladys Amador, a member since Nov. 12, 1966, and Raymond Lehmann. Brother Lehmann also accepted his wife Ruby’s 50year pin. She resides in a nursing home. They both have been members since July 22, 1966. Tootsie Tomanetz accepted a 50-year pin on behalf of her recently deceased son, Hershel Tomanetz. He had been a member since March 8, 1966. Grand Vice President-Marketing Tim Kolbe made the presentations. The names of the other 16 recipients were read. Brother Kolbe commented on the great job the lodge is doing of keeping up the hall with continued improvements. He announced that Richard Symons, Loretta Chilek’s 20-year-old nephew, has been appointed as an agent and will be serving the Bryan area as he is currently a student at Texas A&M. SAN ANTONIO – Harmonia Lodge will meet Thursday, Nov. 10, in the Home Association Ballroom. Snoga’s will cater the traditional turkey dinner. Members are asked to make reservations and to bring a dessert. The lodge will support the Blue Santa program this year. Members are asked to bring unwrapped gifts or cash donations to the November and/or December meetings. Brad Dietrich explained that the Blue Santa Program was created to help families during the holiday season. Police officers are frequently witnesses to the problems encountered by families during the year so the San Antonio Police Officer’s Association began helping local companies and volunteers to collect needed items and monetary donations to aid those in need. Rutersville holds annual barbecue, will meet Nov. 9 RUTERSVILLE – Rutersville Lodge will meet Nov. 9. The lodge will furnish the fried chicken and members are asked to bring a side dish and dessert. A meal featuring barbecued chicken and sausage was served at the Oct. 5 meeting. Members brought a variety of side dishes and desserts. Get well cards were sent to Marilyn Wagner and Ricky Dippel. A sympathy card was sent to the Margaret Harris family. A card was sent to Mary Mewis who recently celebrated her 100th birthday. President Sherry Noak thanked Weldon Hartmann for spreading the gravel in the driveway area. She also reported that a
new freezer had been purchased. A thank-you was received from the Home Office for the donation made to the Youth Camp in honor of Aurleen Kaspar. President Noak reported that she and Delores Bayer had presented the lodge’s donation to the La Grange Cub Scouts. A group of La Vernia Lodge members worked at the lodge hall on Saturday, Sept. 17. Marlin Tanneberger brought his backhoe to remove several old tree stumps that had proved difficult to remove before. Others removed branches and shrubbery and loaded them on a trailer. After about five hours of work, the group gathered at Witte’s Restaurant for lunch. Maxwell to election officers Nov. 6
MAXWELL – Maxwell Lodge will elect officers at the Nov. 6 meeting. Chips and sandwiches will be served. The Luling School of Dance will perform for the Christmas party on Sunday, Dec. 11, at the Maxwell Social Club. Friends and family are asked to bring non-perishable food to be donated to the Luling-Caldwell County Food Bank. Last year, a total of 150 pounds was donated. Refreshments will be served and door prizes awarded. On Tuesday, Oct. 4, the lodge presented the 2016 Humanitarian of the Year Award to Fire Chief Donald LeClerk and the first responders of the Maxwell Volunteer Fire Department. These people went above and beyond the call of duty as the first responders at the scene of the hot air balloon crash between Maxwell and Lockhart in July. Vice

Pershing to serve turkey Nov. 2 SAN ANTONIO – Pershing Lodge will meet Wednesday, Nov 2, at 7 p.m. To celebrate Thanksgiving, a traditional turkey dinner will be served. Members are asked to bring a dessert. The 2017 officers will be elected along with the lodge’s delegates to the 2017 Grand Lodge Convention to be held in May in San Marcos. Members are encouraged to attend and cast their votes. Prayers are still needed for Morrie Nordland and any other members who are ill. Condolences go out to the
families of Jack L. McHaney, Rudolph O. Santos and Michael R. Sergent. The lodge welcomed four new members at the October meeting. Cameron schedules 2017 election CAMERON – Cameron Lodge will hold a special called meeting on Nov. 15 to elect the 2017 officers under the new guidelines adopted by the Home Office. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at Bea’s Kitchen. Grand President/CEO Buddy Preuss attended the Sept. 20 meeting and talked about the changes proposed for the way Hermann Sons elects its officers. The lodge welcomed Andrew Sandoval IV as a new member. Donations will be made in memory of two deceased members.
